It is not often you here children say: “We love Math’s so much, we want to learn more during the school holidays!” Well, this is exactly what 30 Crags Primary Gr 6 and Gr 7 pupils asked for and got it in the form of the BIA Math Challenge. This event was held over a two day period and jam packed with a variety of mathematical hurdles to take on! Fractions, Times tables, Rounding, Weights & measures, Transformations we just a few of the topics studied during the two days. Isabelle and her team of motivated facilitators shared this knowledge with the youngsters by means of fun games and treasure hunts which seem to be the solution, after attending a rotating system of 30 minute classes. The challenge was organized as a holiday follow up of our Crags Homework Centre which is doing very well at the school and we are very pleased to announce at the same time that once we completed out math challenge in Crags, we held one at Kranshoek Primary school for 45 learners. Well done to all who attended and assisted.

The Born In Africa Math Challenge takes Crags by

storm!

Fluffy tails and fuzzy ears were the order of the day, and that was how the stall for Tenikwa was manned (excuse the pun) by Chelee Brown and Grace Marais. The weather could not have been better compared to the rain that we have had until now. With a twitch in our tails we were given the opportunity to let people who came to the stall to learn about the different animals that are being protected and helped at Tenikwa. This includes such animals as the African Penguins, the bushbuck, polecats and even a little bushpig. A raffle was held for a free cheetah walk, with the funds going towards the Kurland Animal Clinic that happens every month. People were very interested in our porcupine display and many didn’t realize that there is a commercial trade in porcupine quills which is encouraged by the jewellery and tourism trade, and results in hundreds of porcupines being killed so we can look pretty. It was interesting to see the different faces and the different personalities that shone from the kaleidoscope of stalls present. The children were happily riding the buggy train being pulled around, and the adults all took a stroll through the crafts that were on display. The band had a rocky start but was soon rolling out the tunes with the best from the 60’s to the 80’s! The support was incredible and the cheetah girls from the Tenikwa tent will be ready for the interested and the knowledge hungry once more.

TENIKWA—CHEETAH GIRLS

KURLAND ANIMAL CLINIC

The Kurland clinic of July 2011 was a huge success. The turnout from the Kurland residents was far more this month than it was last month. It is apparent that people of Kurland care for their pets, as many of them have been bringing their animals every month, and there were even questions as to when the next one is going to be. Remember, the clinic is the first Wednesday of every month and is free for the residents of Kurland Village. Rex the local Chow Chow cross was also there to oversee the dogs coming in, and the children of Kurland were more than eager to help us with the animals and a big thanks goes to Jackie for helping with crowd control, and for helping a distraught woman to fetch her dog that needed our vet’s attention. Another big thank you to Dr Mark Shortreed Tenikwa’s attending Vet for his willingness to help out the animals that need professional veterinary expertise. The clinic offers basic care for Kurland Village pets with deworming as well as tick and flea control. This happens from 14:30 to 16:00. From 16:00 – 16:30, Dr Shortreed, will attend at pets that are sick or hurt. We can unfortunately not organise a sterilisation clinic until the weather warms up, but we hope to offer this before the end of the year. There are many new ideas for the clinic that we hope to introduce in the months to come, so watch this space. When we see the community caring for their animals, it encourages us to offer this service to your pets.

DOLLARS FOR CHANGE YOUTH

DAY PARADE

This year on Youth Day, the Dollars for Change after-school program (The Social Club) organized a march around Kurland Village in honor of those who fought for education equality on 16 June, 1976. Every member of The Social Club made their own Youth Day t-shirt with a message that they thought the community should see. The t-shirt messages reflect the issues that are important to the youth of Kurland. Some of the T-shirts had messages such as “drugs make me sad”, “stop abusing our women”, “take care of your future”, and “finish school before making babies”. The group marched around Kurland for about two hours and many other children followed along singing songs and dancing along the way. It was a wonderful event and every child who participated should be proud of themselves for taking a stand and helping to bring positive change to their community! A big thanks to Cindy-Lee from Nature’s Valley Trust and Tarryn Maynhardt for all your help!!!

DOLLARS FOR CHANGE AFTER

SCHOOL GROUP -VILLAGE SURVEY

By: Shaneen Malatji, Angelique Barnardo Shue-Raye Cloete, Genino Davids Maydene Miggels, Jacques Jantjies

Amonique Lourens, Franciska Christians In the month of June, our after-school group decided to get information about our community involving the parents and role models. We, as a group (“The Social Club), decided tat the only way we can get this information is by making questions and doing interviews. We interviewed about fifty people and their answers where anonymous. We asked five questions and this is what we found out: Question 1: What is the most important thing about being an adult? 59% of people said that responsibility is the most important thing about being an adult. 27% said respect is most important. Other answers we got were love, understanding, being a good example, and being faithful. Question 2: What is the most important thing about being a parent? 39% of people said caring is the most important thing about being a parent. 37% said responsibility is the most important thing. Other answers we got were communication, being a good example, and respect. Question 3: Do you think there are enough good role models in Kurland? 62% of people said no, there are not enough good role models in Kurland. Only 33% of people said yes, there are enough good role models, and 5% said they weren’t sure. Question 4: Do you think that MOST parents in Kurland take good care of their children? 46% of people said yes, and 46% of people said no. 8% of people weren’t sure. Question 5: Can you name a person under 21 years old that is a good role model? The most common answer to this question was Norman Malatji. Questions 3 and 4 of our survey show that Kurland is not where it should be. We need more positive role models for the youth of Kurland. This shows that people in Kurland need to start taking better care of each other and change needs to come to our community. Many parents need to take better care of their kids so that children can grow up to be responsible adults and parents. People feel sad, angry and frustrated about the problems in Kurland. But, change is possible if we work together.

Why are candles dangerous? • Every candle is a potential fire hazard if care is not used when lighting, burning or extinguishing the flame. When used improperly, a candle can cause significant loss of life, injury and loss of property. When do candle fires occur? • According to the National Fire Protections Association (NFPA), December is the peak time of year for candle-related house fires. The top five days for candle fire incidents are Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Halloween. Where do candle fires start? • Candle fire incidents occur most often in the bedroom, followed by the family room, bathroom, and kitchen (see Figure 2). The materials most often ignited by candles are cabinetry, bedding (blankets, sheets, comforters, etc.), curtains and drapery, and mattresses and pillows. What are the main causes of candle fires?

Nearly 85% of candle fire incidents are started because of consumer misuse of the product. The following are some of the categories of ignition factors cited by NFPA. What other factors can start candles fires? Candle burned down Holder broke Candle knocked or tipped over Candle flared Falling asleep Wick was blown off candle Child held candle Inadequate control of open fire Child playing How can you prevent candle fires? A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed 3 basic safety rules: NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED NEVER PLACE A BURNING CANDLE NEAR SOMETHING THAT CAN CATCH FIRE KEEP BURNING CANDLES OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN OR PETS Introducing the New Look In Candle Fire Safety These graphic safety symbols will soon be seen on more and more candle labels worldwide. Learn to recognize these important visual reminders of the candle fire-safety rules. Burn within sight. Keep away from combustibles. Keep away from children. Some additional tips that will help you use and enjoy candles safely are:

Use sturdy, safe candleholders Trim wicks to ¼ inch prior to each

use Be careful not to splatter wax when

extinguishing a candle Avoid using candles in bedrooms and

sleeping areas Always use a flashlight, not a candle,

for emergency lighting Consider using battery-operated

flameless candles What are some alternatives to candles?

Battery operated flameless candles can provide the home décor, fragrance, and glow/flicker of real candlelight, without the risk of fire. In addition to protecting your home, flameless candles are more economical, last forever, and can run up to 250 hours on batteries.

USE BATTERY OPERATED FLAMELESS CANDLES. FLAMELESS CANDLES ARE SAFE.

AGTERGRONDINLIGTING Die prostaat is ‘n klein or-gan of klier wat slegs by

‘n man se saad of sperma wat tydens ejakulasie of uitstorting vrygestel word.

Familiegeskiedenis/Oorerflike fak-tore. As ‘n man se pa of broer prostaatkanker gehad het, is daar ’n verhoogde kans dat hy dit ook sal kry.

Ongesonde dieet.

MOONTLIKE TEKENS EN SIMPTOME VAN PROSTAATKANKER Urinering is moeilik. Moet kort-kort urineer.

‘n Pynlike of brandende gevoel

As jy bekommerd is oor jou gesondheid, praat asseblief met ‘n gesondheidsprakti-syn by jou naaste kliniek of hospitaal.

O m t e v e r s ek er d a t a l l e

An 87 year-old man went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw the man walking down the street with a gorgeous young

lady on his arm. A couple of days later, when the old man had an appointment with the doctor again, the doctor said, "You're really doing great, aren't you?" The man replied, "Just doing what you said doctor, "Get a hot mama and be cheerful." The doctor said, "I didn't say that!...I said you have got a heart murmur. Be careful!" An old lady was posting a Bible to her brother. “Is there anything breakable in here?” asked the postal worker. “Only the 10 commandments!” answered the lady.

Dear Agony Aunt, now that the elections are over I’m really hoping that changes for the

better will take place, but of course we are always disappointed. Now I find friends and family around me have big expectations but when will we see a difference? Zola There was once a little girl who realised that her entire family and village were talking about how things were going to change for the better once certain people were in power. They thought that only then could they be truly happy. She was a wise young girl and knew deep in her heart that their true happiness would not come from people who lived on the out-side of her village and so she decided to take things under her own control…. One night before anyone woke up she baked six loaves of bread and before the sun rose she placed them on the door-steps of all her neighbours. The next day she spent the night tidying peoples gar-dens, another night she got her brother to help fix the leaks in peoples roofs and another made curtains for her home and even groomed the family dog! The little girl’s family and the people in the village were very happy to see that for no apparent reason, they had been given gifts…..but not from any outside forces, just a neighbour who wanted to bring hap-piness to everyone there. The day ‘we start to see a difference’ is the day we all pull together to help each other out and stop expecting others to provide and oth-ers to change first. We have to show courage and face our weaknesses head on and take responsibilities. When we shift blame to others, you are basically saying that you have no ability to control the problem and no choice in the matter and so end up giving away your own power. Don’t expect others to change in order for your circumstances to get better – YOU must change, as Ghandi said ‘be the change you most wish to see in your life’. IMAGINE…..IF everyone helped each other out, gave to each other and got to-gether to discuss how to solve issues – we would no longer be reliant on the gov-ernment for anything – so we would not have to ever be disappointed! Only with our own lack of doing and giving. Inside all of us is true peace, happiness and fulfilment – how do we access that?.... There is a saying that ‘if you want some-thing - give it’, so if you want more love you need to dish it out first, if you want compassion you also need to give it, if you want people to be kind you need to be kind to them. If you want to be happy

LIEWE AGONY AUNTIE! and healthy within yourself you need to give yourself what it takes to be healthy and happy, such as the exercise, diet and the peace of mind your body requires in order to truly be happy. ‘Most important in life is not what you get from it but what you give to it – Life is about helping others’ - ANATUKE FRANCE In our current series of How to be Happy, this month we look at ‘stillness’ with the knowledge that sci-entific research has proven that happi-ness levels are not fixed. Neurological activity in our brains can be shifted by repeatedly using techniques which make us feel happier. Last month we used an eye movement technique to change the brain activity to make you feel happier. This month just by allowing your mind to be still opens up space to make positive changes in your life. It also gives you a break from being pushed and pulled by your emotions giv-ing you a freedom to choose where to direct your attention and what you wish to change:

· Sit somewhere peaceful where you will not be disturbed – no tv or music - sit upright with your hands on your lap and feet flat on the floor

· Focus on your breathing – let it become easier and more regular

· Focus on how you feel – start at the area below your ribs and above your bellybutton

· In a calm gentle voice describe your feelings and then go back to focusing on your breath

· Do this for 2 minutes and then take a break

‘Simply using and repeating these ex-ercises will improve your mood, and that helps you take the next step to-wards changing your whole life for the better’ Paul Mckenna from ‘I can make you happy’ book. SPORT NUUS / NEWS
