Hip hop from Western Sydney via India and a businessman who likes to boogie?

It can only be Wagga Wagga’s multicultural street festival, Fusion15.

The Civic Centre Precinct will burst to life on Saturday 17 October with a diverse line up of performers ready to entertain the Wagga community and visitors alike.

Headlining Fusion15 are Sikh-inspired rapper L-FRESH The LION, the eclectic Mojo Juju, world music collective Reflejos Musique

and one-man flash mob The Dancing Accountant.

Fusion15 will form part of national tours for both Mojo Juju and L-FRESH The LION, who will be kicking off his 11-show tour at the Wagga festival.

“I’m excited to be performing at Fusion15 this year,” L-FRESH said.

“It’s my first time playing in Wagga and it will be a great way to kick off my national tour and play some new music live for the very first time.”

Having grown up in regional NSW, Mojo Juju knows the value of bringing national acts

to country areas.“For me there is something particularly

special about being able to stop and play music in smaller cities and towns, instead of just passing through,” Mojo Juju said.

“I get really excited about reconnecting with those parts of the country.”

The Dancing Accountant first appeared on So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2009 and despite being told to stick to accountancy, has been bringing his contagious moves to festivals around the country.

“I will be looking over Wagga Wagga City Council’s accounts for them in October and I’m looking forward to getting out of the office and getting down to the sounds of L-FRESH The LION, Mojo Juju and Reflejos Musique at Fusion15,” he said.

“It will be the perfect fusion of awesome (their music) and awkward (my dancing).”

Fusion15 will be held on Saturday, 17 October from 4pm to 9pm in the Civic Centre Precinct.

More than 10,000 people from across the region attended last year’s Fusion festival and Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said the 2015 event is shaping up to be the biggest yet.

“Fusion is about celebrating the food, music, art and cultures that mix together to make our community unique and liveable,” she said.

“Along with this impressive line-up of acts from around the country, Fusion15 will again showcase our local talent.”

Expressions of interest for community performers and food stalls closed on 24 August, with a broad range of residents and businesses making submissions.

This year’s festival will again feature eclectic performances, mouth-watering food and pop-up shops. There will also be roving performers and free interactive creative art activities for the young and young at heart.

Fusion15 is proudly funded and presented by Wagga Wagga City Council and Multicultural NSW in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Riverina Community College and St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.

Forget winter and get into the pool at Oasis

More than $119,000 in funding was presented to 16 community groups recently as part of the 2015 ClubGRANTS program.

The state-wide initiative provides the framework for registered clubs to directly fund local priority projects and services.

Wagga Wagga City Council coordinates the local ClubGRANTS committee made up of representatives from the RSL and Rules clubs, Family and Community Services and a non-government representative.

“The funding provided by this scheme assists groups that may not have been able to secure financial assistance through other means, and helps to ensure valued services and projects continue to be delivered,” Director Environment and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said.

Clubs that earn more than $1 million annually in gaming machine revenue provide funding for community projects and services, and in turn receive dollar-for-dollar gaming tax deductions.

This year’s presentation took place at Mount Austin High School, whose Clontarf Academy program was one of the worthy recipients.

The water rollers will be back in the pool for the Oasis Family Fun Day on Sunday 30 August, along with

plenty of other activities to keep the family entertained.

Since they were first inflated in July, the giant bubbles have proven a hit with the community and Oasis visitors can get inside one for $3 from 11am to 3pm.

There will also be a My

Little Dragon inflatable available all day and a large inflatable challenge held from noon to 4pm, which are both free activities.

If you don’t want to get in the water, there will be a free jumping castle from 11am to 3pm and a sausage sizzle from

noon to 2pm, as well as coffee, slushies and popcorn for sale.

Normal entry fees apply for the Oasis Family Fun Day, which will be held from 11am to 4pm.

Weekly mowing reportThe spring mowing

program will get under way on Tuesday, 1 September.

All parks and open spaces receive one grass cut approximately once every six weeks. However, the current wet

CBD, the east team is mowing in Forest Hill and the west team have been in Mount Austin.

The Civic Theatre is casting the final two roles for this year’s community musical, Legally Blonde and your pooch may be paw-fect for the job.

The roles of Bruiser and Rufus are pivotal, and even though these cast members will not get their own dressing room they are guaranteed to receive star treatment.

Bruiser Woods is Elle’s dog and more of a trusty sidekick than a pet. Elle likes to dress Bruiser up in different outfits and put him in her purse.

The Legally Blonde team are looking for a handsome, short-haired Chihuahua or Chihuahua cross to play Bruiser, while Rufus is Paulette’s English bulldog who has a sweet

disposition.The actual role of the dogs on stage

will not be difficult – it’s knowing what to do with lights and other distractions that may prove a challenge.

Ideally the dogs will be well trained and will be comfortable coming out on stage.

They will be working with a dog trainer and also working closely with a couple of cast members.

As the dog’s owner you’ll need to spend a considerable amount of time backstage keeping your dog company.

Council’s proposed 12-month smoking ban trial for the CBD (Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets) has generated much debate.

Smokers in particular are outraged, with some demanding their right to smoke when and where they want to with no regard for anyone else.

This proposal is not about the rights of smokers, nor an attempt to stop them from smoking.

It’s about the rights of non-smokers and their right to breathe clean air.

The footpaths of Wagga’s

CBD are confined spaces. People who walk past smokers have no choice but to breathe in their secondhand smoke.

This secondhand smoke is a complex mixture of thousands of chemical compounds, including at least 250 chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic. These include substances known to affect the central nervous system, the immune

system, the heart and the liver, and cause eye, skin and respiratory problems.

The chief executive of the Hearth Foundation, Kerry Doyle, in supporting Wagga’s proposed ban, wrote:

“There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and even brief periods of outdoor exposure can be harmful.

“Evidence shows that a non-smoker’s contact with

second hand smoke can result in up to a 30 per cent increase in risk of heart disease.”

Smokers know the health risks associated with their own smoking and should know about the dangers their secondhand smoke can cause to others. Most avoid smoking around non-smokers; in particular children, pregnant women and asthmatics.

Unfortunately there are many smokers who are not considerate or respectful and are only focused on their own self interests.

Thanks to information provided by the community, Council Rangers have identified two dogs allegedly involved in a serious attack on a Kooringal Road property last week.

Council called on residents for information after the dogs were seen exiting the area through a water retention basin about

6.30am last Tuesday 18 August.A pony had to be euthanized as

a result of the injuries sustained in the attack.

Council’s Manager Regulatory Services Greg Minehan praised the community for their help.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many

members of the public who contacted Council Rangers providing detailed information, which has directly resulted in the location of these dogs,” Mr Minehan said.

Legislative proceeding has commenced against the owner of the dogs as a result of this very serious incident.

Rain overflows lakeLake Albert is more than full – it’s overflowing.Even more winter rain has meant the lake is now past its

maximum capacity of 191.5m above sea level, with recent downpours flowing straight through to the popular recreation spot as the ground is already saturated.

Council staff have been regularly monitoring the lake and at 8am on Wednesday, 26 August declared the lake full.

Earlier this month, Council News reported the lake’s water level had risen by 1.56m since May.

Take care when disposing of sharpsWagga Wagga City Council is working closely with local

pharmacies and the community to ensure needles and syringes are disposed of safely.

As part of Council’s Community Sharps Management Program, sharps bins are located at pharmacies around the city and are kept in a secure location for customer use.

Community sharps are needles and syringes from either self-administered health care, such as insulin treatment for diabetics, or drug use.

“Sharps pose a health risk and cause penetrating injuries if inappropriately disposed of,” Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said.

“It’s vital that all sharps, whether loose or in a sharps container, are never disposed of in recycling or normal

waste bins because of the high risk of needle stick injury to workers.”

Needles and syringes should be placed into an appropriate sharps container prior to disposal to a community sharps disposal facility, unless placed in single syringe disposal units.

OPERATION OF BOARDING HOUSESWithin the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area there is a range of accommodation types. Included in these accommodation types are premises that Council considers to be boarding houses. Boarding houses are buildings, including dwellings, where lodgings are let out on a per room basis (as opposed to a single lease over a dwelling) for periods of 3 or more months. Development consent is required to operate a boarding house.In recent times Council has received complaints that there are boarding houses in the city operating in dwellings without consent. As people may not have been aware for the need for consent, Council is currently holding an amnesty period, where people can self-report their unapproved boarding houses and lodge a Development Application to seek consent. During this amnesty period Council will waive all Development Application fees associated with an application for a boarding house.The amnesty period is for 12 months commencing February 2015 and will end on 29th February 2016. a smart idea.The Smart Homes seminar series is halfway

through after two successful workshops hosted by local experts.

The free talks have been well attended by residents, whether they’re building a new home or wanting to save money on their existing house.

The two remaining seminars on 3 and 10 September are The Body: Building for healthy living, and The Great Outdoors: Grow and save.
