Weekly information from us to you

There has been a robust discussion around Council’s proposal to fund its one-third share of the levee upgrade.

Pending the outcome of applications for State and Federal Government funding to cover the other two-thirds of the $23.3M project, Council intends to fund its $7.75M share with a temporary increase in rates.

Council is currently having a conversation with residents at a series of pop-up stalls and online.

Residents and ratepayers are also being encouraged to contact

Council to find out more or come to the community forum scheduled for Wednesday 18 November.

Council’s General Manager Alan Eldridge said it is important for people to contact Council if they have any questions or comments about the proposal.

“Some key questions from the community have been around how this rate increase would differ from previous special rate variations, whether or not it will drop off at the end of the five-year period and why all ratepayers have to pay even if they don’t live in a floodplain,” Mr Eldridge said.

You can find answers to all of these questions at wagga.nsw.gov.au/srv or call 1300 292 442.

From front page“Not only is it good for the planet, it’s good for your

wellbeing.”“You’ll also be turning trash into treasure – recycling

creates 9.2 jobs for every 2.8 jobs in landfill and is an $11 billion industry for Australia.”

Miss Kent said with so many benefits, it’s important to make sure recycling is sorted correctly and free of any contaminates.

“A survey of 115 Councils found the number one recycling mistake was soft plastics such as shopping bags, bread bags and cling film being put in kerbside recycling bins,” she said.

“These types of plastics can’t be recycled through the normal kerbside service as the can clog conveyor belts during processing.

“It’s also important not to put your recycling in a plastic bag as your bagful of recycling will end up in landfill.

“A quarter of the Councils also reported that excess food residue prevented some items being recycled. For example, pizza boxes are recyclable, but pizza isn’t.”

If you have any questions about what you can and can’t recycle, contact Miss Kent on 1300 292 442.

Recycling makes us happy: research

The Tipping Point consultation is continuing with a series of information sessions being held in selected villages this week to discuss the potential to introduce a Council-managed kerbside waste collection service.

More than 4500 residents completed Tipping Point surveys, which were returned in August, providing valuable information on current practices and expectations for a variety of Council-managed waste services.

As a part of this survey, rural areas that don’t currently receive a Council-managed kerbside waste collection service were asked if they would like to receive this service under a new contract.

Manager Waste and Stormwater Services Geoff Veneris said Collingullie, Uranquinty, Currawarna and Cartwrights Hill/Bomen have all being identified for further consultation on this issue.

“The results of the survey show that there is a significant increase

in support in these areas for the introduction of a Council-managed kerbside waste collection service compared with the previous 2007 consultation process,” he said.

“While not all these villages had the majority support for a Council service, this opportunity will not be available for another 10 years once the new contract is resolved in September 2016.”

Meetings will be held in Collingullie, Currawarna and Uranquinty to update these communities on the

survey results and the process from here.

Following the meetings, residents in all four localities will be given the opportunity to undertake formal written submissions to Council to raise concerns or support for the new service by 27 November.

A final decision on which villages will be included in the new contract is scheduled to be made next September.

SPECIAL VISITOR: Korean Consul General Mr Whie Jin Lee (left) visited Wagga Wagga this week and presented Korean War veteran Harold “Bob” Menzies (middle) with the Korean Peace Medal. Mayor Rod Kendall (right) welcomed Whie Jin Lee and wife Kyung Hee Lee to the city at a function held at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The couple were invited to the city by Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire.

If you’re renovating at home this month make sure you’re prepared to encounter asbestos and know how dispose of it properly.

This November is National Asbestos Awareness Month, which aims to educate Australians about the dangers of working with asbestos during home renovations and maintenance and educate them about where asbestos might be found in and around homes and on properties.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said many wrongly believe that only fibro homes contain asbestos.

“Asbestos products can most likely be found in any Australian home built or renovated before 1987 even brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes,” he said.

“Asbestos can be found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and under floor

coverings, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, garages, ceilings and ceiling space (insulation), eaves, fences, extensions to homes and backyard sheds – it could be anywhere.”

You can currently dispose of your asbestos waste for free if you sign up to Wagga Wagga City Council’s Householders Asbestos Disposal Trial Scheme, part of the NSW Government’s $465 million dollar Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

You must register first and provided all conditions are met, householders will then be eligible for free disposal. Contact Council on 1300 292 442 for more information and to register.

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

I would like to acknowledge everyone who has made the past few months in Wagga such a great time with the many community events that have

occurred throughout spring.

These events kicked off with the sporting finals and the Spring Street Festival, which corresponded with the Henty Field Days closely followed by Gears and Beers and then moved into the school holiday period with the Wagga Show and Little Big Day Out.

Taste Riverina has then been held throughout the

month of October with events throughout the region, which in Wagga included Fusion15 and the popular Cork and Fork each Friday at Wagga Beach.

The Twilight by the Lagoon 2015/16 season kicked off on 30 October with almost 100 young instrumentalists from Wagga public schools taking part, assisted by the Riverina Conservatorium.

These events only happen with the support of our community’s volunteers, Council staff, service clubs and private companies. The attendance at these events and the many others held around Wagga was outstanding and I have received a large number of positive comments from people who have attended.

Thank you to all involved.

• • • •In relation to the State

Government’s reform of local government, it was great to receive confirmation from IPART that Wagga is deemed “fit”.

The IPART assessment of many councils deemed not fit is somewhat puzzling

and that assessment is causing considerable angst in those communities.

Being fit is no guarantee Wagga will not be subject to a forced amalgamation with an adjoining council. We will need to continue to work with neighbouring councils to ensure the eventual outcomes result in stronger local government.

• • • •I would like to thank all

of those who have given me positive messages and encouragement for my fourth term as Mayor.

I look forward to the challenges that the next 12 months will bring knowing I have that support in the community and Council.
