Let’s start with the BIG NEWS—WE MADE OUR GOAL!

The 27th Annual Used Book Sale was held this past weekend–February 28 & March 1–at the South Plains Mall and in true fashion the local PTAs through volunteers, books and shoppers we made our goal. With sales and donations gathered at the sale, we will be funding five $1,000 scholarships for future teachers! Scholarship applications are now being accepted at all the schools, see your counselors for more information and page 2 of this newsletter for additional details.

Thank you to the South Plains Mall for the continued support by providing us space in a high-traffic area. Thank you to the Friends of the Library for their generosity in sharing their wealth of books–especially the hard backs! Thank you to the local PTAs that gathered and donated books and to the Middle School and High School volunteers. It truly takes ALL of us to make this event a success.

Local Elections Time!by Mary Jo Burgess,Texas PTA Director of Member Services

It’s that time of year again, time for

nominating committees and officer

elections. All members are invited and

encouraged to get involved in this important process.

Nominating committees are not formed or appointed, they are

elected by the PTA’s membership. The nominating committee is tasked

with slating nominees for your PTA’s elected positions for the

upcoming year. But it is every member’s right to identify and recruit

new leadership for your PTA. Do you know someone who would make

an excellent leader for your PTA? Have you encouraged them to

consider an officer or chair position or committee membership? Have

you considered serving in any of these positions yourself?

Your PTA’s bylaws identify the officer positions for your PTA, the

composition of your PTA’s executive board, and some of the

responsibilities. The bylaws also stipulate the month the nominating

committee is elected and the month that elections are held.

Once elected, the nominating committee does more than just

contact current board members. The opportunity for everyone is there:

board members, classroom or workroom volunteers, parents, faculty,

all members, community members, and you! The nominating

committee should use all the PTA’s publicity resources and connections

to invite members to become involved in the leadership of your PTA.

It’s always helpful if information is provided describing the different

positions and available opportunities, from officers, to chairs, to

committee membership. The nominating committee can also seek

individuals they feel would be good for the elected positions such as

individuals with specific talents, skills, knowledge, and experience.

The committee will select the candidate that they feel is most

qualified for each position. This “slate” is then presented to the

members for their consideration.

At the election meeting, the Nominating Committee Chair will

present the slate to the membership. Additional candidates may be

nominated from the floor at that time and elections conducted.

All elected officers must be current members of the PTA prior to

assuming their positions at the end of the school year. As a

member, there are multiple ways you can get involved! Exercise your

membership rights…nominate, vote! Bringing new leadership into

your PTA provides new ideas, new insight, and renewal. And it’s crucial

to the sustainability of your PTA. So get informed, get involved, and

contact your nominating committee today!
