MEETING MATTERS WATER AND SEWER NOTICES

Wanting to apply for a job with Council, but not sure where to start or what is required? Applying for a Council job can be different to other industries, but that doesn’t mean it is a difficult thing to do. This is a short overview of how to put together your application.

When applying for a job with Council, it is important that you include the following:

• Position Application Form • Verification of Academic Qualifications form, if

required • Covering letter • Your response to each of the selection criteria:

This is an important part of your application. Every position at Council has certain requirements (selection criteria) which are necessary to perform the job. Your application needs to clearly show how your skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience match these selection criteria, and why you are the best person for the job. The selection criteria are listed in the Position Description.

Create a new document, make a separate heading for each selection criteria, and describe how your skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience apply to it. Use examples wherever possible. For example, if one of the selection criteria was, “Demonstrated customer service skills”, your application could say something like, “My job at (company name) required me to deal with a diverse range of people.

I handled front counter enquiries, complaints and requests. While working at (company name), I was responsible for telephone reception, word-processing, data entry, updating the visitors register and greeting people in a friendly manner”

• Your resume • Contact details of at least two work related (or

school) referees Make sure you ask their permission beforehand. Include your referee’s full name, their contact phone number and relationship to you (for example, Manager)

• Copies of all licences and qualifications relating to the job you are applying for

It might seem that Council needs a lot of information in your application, but people are selected for Council jobs on the basis of merit. This means that Council looks for evidence of your skills, abilities and experience and how well you fit the job requirements, compared with the other applicants. This helps us to make sure that the best applicant is selected for the job.

Need more information? Council has a Positions Vacant section on the website which contains information and the forms you will need to complete your application. Otherwise, please give HR a call on 6965 1900.
