Story on page 2.

The effects of the Black Summer bushfires in North East Victoria will be the focus of a Senate inquiry next week, with a full day hearing with witnesses from the Corryong, Walwa and Alpine communities attending.

Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines, secured a dedicated hearing for the North East to ensure the voices of affected communities are heard.

“This means the

experiences of individuals from the Upper Murray and Alpine region will be listened to,” Dr Haines said.

“Witnesses from Wodonga and Wangaratta, larger towns that played such important roles in supporting bushfire-affected areas will also give evidence.”

The Senate Inquiry into Lessons to be Learned in Relation to the Australian Bushfire Season 2019-20

had originally scheduled a hearing in Wodonga but due to Covid-19 travel restrictions the virtual hearing will be held on Wednesday September 29.

The health impacts of the bushfires will be a focus of the hearing, as well as the recovery efforts led by local communities.

Tourism and the effect on the region will be addressed by witnesses from the business sector.

committee will also hear about the impact on the wine and timber industries and local councils.

Dr Haines said giving evidence to the committee would help improve the ongoing recovery efforts for these areas, as well as ensure better responses for future disasters.

“It is important for this committee to hear about the unique experiences in Corryong and Walwa and how the Covid-19

pandemic had made the recovery projects that much more difficult,” Dr Haines said.

“Canberra must listen and act on what the voices in those towns say. We have come a long way in bushfire recovery but there is more work to be done.”

Securing the dedicated hearing for the North East builds on the work Dr Haines has already done for towns in Indi impacted by the Black Summer bushfires.

Annie Hore kept a firm grip on her Bulldogs’ football or it could have ended up over the fence!

Friends become footy foesThere has been plenty

of verbal sparring between local identities and footy fanatics, Annie Hore and Bob Salter, in the lead up to Saturday’s AFL grand final between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons.

Annie experienced every fan’s dream when her beloved Bulldogs won the flag in 2016, their first since defeating Melbourne in 1954.

“Don’t forget we won three in a row after that!” Bob chimed in.

Annie has always followed the Dogs and recalls one of her aunts had a shop in Footscray when she was young.

“Ted Whitten used to visit us and his brother Don coached my brothers at Casterton,” she added.

Bob has been a lifelong fan of the Dees since seeing the great Ron Barassi in action (and he is still dark that Barassi transferred to Carlton!).

One of his earliest memories is of the Demons losing to the arch enemy Collingwood in the 1958 decider.

“I was listening to it on the wireless radio and for some reason I had a pair of scissors which I was digging into the table.

“My Mum was a Pies fan and when she saw what I’d done she gave me a whack - I was knocked out twice in the one day!

“For the record the

Dees won the next two grand finals after that,” he added.

Bob also has an equal passion for the Corryong Demons’ football club and was a great believer in junior development, coaching the Dees’ under age teams for 17 years and winning nine flags along the way.

He is confident “but not over confident” that Melbourne can break its long premiership drought

on Saturday and says the key to success will be ruck star, Max Gawn, controlling the game.

“It’s also time we broke the Norm Smith curse,” Bob said, referring to the Demons’ shock decision to temporarily sack the six-time premiership coach a year after the 1964 flag victory.

“It was stupid, it stuffed us,” he said.

Annie is convinced her Bulldogs will triumph

after winning three tough finals and travelling back and forth across the country during lockdown.

“They’ve just handled everything quietly and calmly,” she said.

“They’ll be the quiet achievers.”

Annie did admit she wouldn’t be heartbroken if the Demons won, having gone through a similar flag famine as a Dogs’ supporter.

Surprisingly, Bob

and Annie are both keen punters but don’t have a wager on this week’s outcome.

“I just hope it’s a good game,” Annie said.

A Melbourne win would give Bob a lift after going through some health problems this year but no matter what the result, both he and Annie will be hoping young Demon, James Jordon, gets a game as they have known him since the day he was born.

BUSHFIRE RECOVERY

BULLETINThis bulletin provides regular updates and stories about bushfire recovery both in our local community and across Victoria’s fire-affected areas.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria proudly works in partnership with council and the local community to support bushfire recovery.

SUPPORT FOR REBUILDING AFTER BUSHFIRES The Rebuild Support Service (RSS) is a free one-stop-shop that provides support to people who are rebuilding.

Delivered by Towong Shire Council, the RSS has been designed for you to access at any stage of your rebuild.

Access:

• Dedicated planning and permit information, support, and legal advice.

• Advice from building experts.

• Information on financial assistance options.

• Information about other services you may be eligible for.

How the Rebuild Support Service (RSS) works

1. Register with the RSS. Simply contact your

local RSS, either through the details provided below or by visiting your local Recovery Hub and you will be registered.

2. The RSS provides you with relevant support and advice from experts in their field to assist progression of your planning permit application.

3. Being registered with the RSS means you will also get to access other relevant and available supports you might not know about but may be eligible for, such as types of financial support.

4. The RSS will keep in regular contact with you through the rebuild process. The RSS is here to support you throughout your entire rebuild journey.

The RSS is here to help and is continuing to operate under current COVID-19 restrictions.

PLANNING AND BUILDING PERMITSPermits are an essential part of rebuilding. They help to build successfully and safely. To build you will usually need a planning permit and will always need a building permit.

A planning permit is a legal document that gives permission to use or develop land in a particular way and is issued by your local council.

A building permit is a written approval which allows building work to go ahead and provides you with protection relating to the safety, health, amenity and sustainability of your build.

Your building permit will be issued by a private building surveyor.

The RSS can help step you through exactly what you need and how to go about it.

You can read more at www.brv.vic.gov.au/rebuild or call your local RSS directly.

REGISTER FOR SHORT-TERM MODULAR HOUSING BEFORE THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBERShort Term Modular Housing units are an option available for those who lost their primary place of residence in the 2019-20 Eastern Victorian Bushfires.

The program is flexible and aims to get those who need it back on their land and in their communities.

THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2021 is the cut-off date for new registrations for the program.

After having lost their homes in the bushfires, both Susan Peterson and her parents, Dianne and Thomas Webb, decided to live together in one temporary home while rebuilding. They had some specific needs for Susan’s father.

Short-Term Modular Homes are standard designs, but they can be customised for people with specific needs.

“It was actually one of the easiest things of all the dramas I had to deal with. I just told our support worker what I needed for Dad and that’s what they came up with.”

If you need to discuss your temporary housing options or are unsure whether you meet the criteria, BRV can consider your circumstances.

Please call 1800 560 760 to speak to a Bushfire Recovery Support Worker by Thursday 30 September 2021.

If you’re residing in a Short-Term Modular Housing unit, the registration cut-off date doesn’t affect you. If you’ve registered for Short-Term Modular Housing and are waiting for it to be processed, the registration cut-off date doesn’t affect you and your application will continue to be processed.

If you would like to talk to someone about this, Recovery Support Workers are here to listen and link you to experts who can help.

Call 1800 560 760 to talk to someone today or visit your local recovery Hub.

Towong Shire Council has announced that it has secured a $500,000 grant from Bushfire Recovery Victoria’s Local Government Authorities and Community Service Organisations Program to support the redevelopment of the Playle’s Hill precinct in Corryong.

In the wake of 2019/20 bushfires, a group of passionate community members came together to develop the idea of a botanical garden at Playle’s Hill, as a place for locals and visitors to reflect and reconnect.

Community members have since formed the Playle’s Hill Project Group which includes members of the Man from Snowy River Tourist Association, Corryong Neighbourhood Centre, Corryong Community Recovery Committee and other interested locals.

The tourist association has also secured a $10,000 grant from the Border Trust’s Bushfire Relief Fund, as well as a $25,000 grant from the NewsCorp Australia’s Bushfire Fund.

The working group has been busy over the

last year, workshopping ideas and holding working bees to tidy up the site and begin landscaping.

Council staff have also been working with the group to develop a masterplan for the site which includes provision for carparking, walking tracks, informative signage and a viewing platform.

The work will also include an upgrade of visitor facilities including shade structures, barbecue area, park furniture and re-development of the toilet block.

The plans will be further developed and finalised over the coming months, with construction set to begin in 2022.

Towong mayor,

Cr David Wortmann, congratulated community groups and interested people for getting the project off the ground.

“They have done an amazing job in bringing interested members together to workshop ideas and drive the project forward.

“Council is proud to support such a great

community-led initiative and we can’t wait to see the end result.”

If you’d like to be involved in the Playles Hill Project Group, contact the Corryong Neighbourhood Centre on 02 6076 2176 or visit the community-run Playles Hill Project Facebook page at facebook.com/PlaylesHillProject.

Parks Victoria will continue to connect people with nature and create a more inclusive environment by developing a new Disability Action Plan.

Now open for community engagement, Parks Victoria is seeking ideas and feedback on the first stage of the plan to help guide priorities and actions needed to welcome all people to Victoria’s precious landscapes.

“Parks Victoria is committed to enabling visitors living with a disability to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits from being in nature with their families and friends,” said Accessibility and Inclusion Co-ordinator John Kenwright.

Encompassing park access and experiences, volunteering and employment opportunities with Parks Victoria, the plan will also align with the priorities of the Victorian government’s new State Disability Plan when released.

Once final, the plan will set priorities and actions for the next four years and continue the work already being done to provide parks for everyone, including improving and

Help wanted to shape parks plan

creating more accessible environments for visitors with a disability.

In the past few years Parks Victoria has launched or expanded a range of initiatives for disabled people, including online resources for children with autism, the TrailRider program to enable better access for wheelchair users and a developing partnership with Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria to

deliver the ‘walk in the park program’ for blind or vision impaired people.

“Victoria’s parks are places for connecting with nature and each other. Parks Victoria plays an integral role in enabling everyone to connect with our wonderful natural environment to ensure they gain many health and wellbeing benefits,” Mr Kenwright said.

“Parks Victoria has engaged with people of all

abilities to provide more inclusive opportunities for them to explore and enjoy Victoria’s precious natural and cultural landscapes.”

Parks Victoria will be running a series of online focus groups and a survey for community feedback. Supports are available for all participants throughout the consultation process, including Auslan interpreters and live closed captioning.

Since the previous

Disability Action Plan 2017-20, Parks Victoria has enhanced consultation with communities, improved access to parks and provided more volunteering and educational opportunities for all Victorians.

One of the largest citizen scientist projects in the world, The Great Australian Platypus Search, has been launched.

Earlier this year, this unique and iconic species was listed as threatened in Victoria for the first time. Collecting important environmental DNA (eDNA) data will be the first step to reversing this platypus population decline.

The Victorian government, World Wide Fund for Nature- Australia and many generous philanthropists including The Ross Trust, Capricorn Foundation, Fouerss Foundation and PMF Foundation have provided

The platypus hunt has begunsupport and funding for the project, enabling it to launch in Victoria this year.

Samples will be gathered by citizen scientists during the 2021 platypus breeding season (August- October) to be analysed in the lab by key project partner, EnviroDNA. With this data, scientists will be able to map platypus populations across the state, highlighting platypus refuge areas that can be immediately supported.

This project will be utilising innovative eDNA technology, which can detect the DNA of animals over large spatial areas.

EnviroDNA has developed a comprehensive sampling methodology that citizen scientists, including school students, children and community groups and businesses can easily have fun doing.

Using sampling kits, water samples from more than 1500 sites across Victoria are being collected by citizen scientists. Data of this quality and consistency has never been gathered on this scale before in Australia, and potentially the world, making this one of the most significant citizen- science and biodiversity research projects in history.

Odonata has received

an overwhelming response to the project already and is calling on all Victorians to take part in this world first project.

The Great Australian Platypus Search app (available for iOS and Android) will be used for in- field data collection. Once you have selected your sampling sites, make sure to download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Tracking platypus will help stop a decline in numbers.

At the latest meeting of Snowy Valleys Council (SVC) Councillors James Hayes and John Later were re-elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.

They will hold those positions for the period up to the Local Government Elections on December 4.

Council stays a steady courseAll nine councillors

were in attendance at a virtual meeting which was also livestreamed on council’s YouTube channel.

The mayor and deputy mayor were also authorised as SVC voting delegates for the LGNSW 2021 Board Elections

and the LGNSW Annual Conference

Council approved two motions for submission to the conference - one calling on the NSW government to address the challenges of financial sustainability for local government; and the other calling for clarification

and expediting of matters relating to the Boundaries Commission independent statutory review announced in July 2021.

Councillors welcomed an update on ongoing community bushfire recovery efforts across the region. The report provided a summary of

progress made against key deliverables set up by Resilience NSW and managed by council’s Community Recovery Officer.

It noted that while Covid-19 restrictions have curtailed certain social recovery initiatives such as community engagement

and much face-to-face contact, council’s recovery support is continually adapting to meet the current needs of the community and is focused on a whole-of-community approach to support all towns and villages in the Snowy Valleys.

The meeting documents, live recording

and minutes can be viewed on council’s website at www.svc.nsw.gov.au/16-Sept-2021.

An Extraordinary Meeting of council will be held at 2pm on Thursday October 7, 2021 and the next Ordinary Meeting of council will be held on Thursday October 21, 2021, starting at 2pm.

“A photo competition also allows us to support local businesses by offering shopping vouchers as prizes.”

To enter the competition children (with the help of their parents or guardians) just need to

An up and coming swimmer who had her first lessons in Corryong as a baby, is eyeing off a berth in the Australian team for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Molly Walker started swimming lessons at six months of age at the Corryong pool and then joined the Corryong Crocs swim club at around six years old.

She moved to Maslin Beach, a southern coastal suburb of Adelaide, in 2016 with her parents Sallyanne and Jason and brothers and the talented 15-year-old hasn’t looked back since.

Molly announced herself as a top flight competitor at the Australian Olympic trials in June when she won her heats of the 400m and 800m freestyle events.

Although the Year 10 student at Tarachilla College missed out on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, she is treating the experience as part of the learning curve, having competed at state and national level for the past five years.

Cerys Evans from SA newspaper The Wine Coast Whippet spoke to Molly about competing at the Olympic trials and asked her what is what like mixing it in the pool with swim stars Ariarne Titmus and Kaylee McKeown.

“I’ve always looked up to them because they just do everything and execute everything to a tee,” she replied.

“Ariarne swims the same races as I do and always looks so confident, calm, cool and collected.”

Molly said that resilience under pressure is a quality she sees in them and is something she

Water baby aims for the topcontinually works on.

Her dedication to her sport started at a young age. The Corryong pool was only open for four months of the year so outside the season she traine din the local doctor’s pool - four strokes per lap, turn and repeat.

During the pandemic lockdowns she has been running around the streets of Maslin Beach, ramping up her weights sessions and taking regular dips in the ocean.

Her strict training regimen and regular competitions means Molly sometimes misses out on a regular teenage life but she considers herself a swimmer, first and foremost.

Even on those days when she doesn’t feel like getting out of bed her coach, Scott Beringen, has a way of motivating her.

“He changes my mindset as soon as I step in the pool,” she said.

It also helps that Molly treats swimming and the necessary training as a de-stressor.

“As soon as I’m in the pool, for me everything else goes away,” she said.

During her down time Molly loves spending time with her family who are her greatest support.

“They have shown they are willing to come with me the whole way,” she said.

However, before entertaining too many thoughts of the next Olympics, Molly’s focus is on making the top echelon at the next national titles and meeting qualifying times for major swim meets.

Anyone with an interest in swimming is invited to join the Corryong Crocs

for the upcoming season. The club’s annual

Following the easing of lockdown restrictions last week, ladies social golf resumed with much excitement on Wednesday which soon escalated after Maree Irving scored an elusive hole-in-one from the 10th tee with her first hit of the day!As per playing restrictions, her colleagues were more than 50 metres away but certainly heard the accolades coming from the other fairways. This was the first hole-in-one in ladies golf since Maree’s sister, Cheryl Smedley, recorded an ace, also on the 10th, in January 2014.

Golfer scores ace on return

Following a disastrous two years as a result of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the Upper Murray Football Netball League (UMFNL) has begun ‘thinking outside the square’ with an audacious move to recruit another club to the competition.

League vice-president, Mont Waters, confirmed to the Border Mail that officials had recently contacted two clubs - one each from the Tallangatta and Hume leagues - about joining the Upper Murray competition in 2022.

“We had a league meeting earlier this month and want t get on the front foot and expand our competition,” Waters said.

He did not name the two clubs that have been in discussions with the league but said they were taking a proactive approach to ensure its long term future.

Waters indicated that

League is keen to expandone of the clubs had been reasonably positive about the proposal.

The introduction of a new club would make the UMFNL a six-team competition again and eliminate the bye, after the Border-Walwa club went into recess at the end of 2019.

Waters said the Pies are not expected to reform in the foreseeable future.

Although he would not disclose which clubs had been approached, Wodonga Saints president, Adrian Barry, confirmed that contact had been made but the club had no intention of leaving the Tallangatta league.

“I won’t say that people haven’t approached me with the idea of moving leagues but it’s not on our radar at all,” he said.

The Upper Murray league had preliminary discussions with the then Bethanga Saints club in

the 1990s about moving from the Tallangatta league but they remained in the league, before becoming the Wodonga Saints in 2001.

That same year former Tallangatta club Bullioh reformed after a hiatus of 24 years and joined the UMFNL.

Clubs have struggled for numbers in recent years, particularly at junior level, which has had the most impact on the Corryong and Federal clubs.

The league had commissioned a report in 2020 on how a merged club model and move to the Tallangatta league would work but it was rejected by the clubs.

Given the plight of the Demons and Swans, could the unthinkable be considered - a merger of the two arch enemies?

At least it would get rid of the bye!

Work has started on installing a synthetic green at the Corryong Bowls Club, which will slightly delay the start of the new season. The club opening day is now scheduled for Sunday October 24th, depending on the progress of the works and pandemic restrictions.
