ELECTION COMMENT: Following the issuing of election writs for the Local Government Elections 2021, all advertisements must contain an authorisation and a valid street address. Letters to the Editor containing election comment must bear a name and valid street address for publication. Responsibility for all other election comment in this publication is accepted by Tash Adams, Editor, Tennant and District Times.
I HAVE had phone calls and requests by people to stand for Mayor in the upcom-ing council elections. I greatly appreciate the calls and requests,
but I will not be standing for election. I was on the Tennant Creek Town Council
for two terms in the 1990s, almost six years. It is time other people take up the challenge
with eyes open, not for their own egos or power plays, but contributing with vision and lateral thinking towards positive outcomes supported by an efficient and responsive council administration. Council needs to regularly engage in a
meaningful way with all town based Aborig-inal organisations at the table, non-govern-ment service providers, government bodies and police to put together effective strate-gies responding to alcohol related anti-social behaviour and other criminal activity. Support by government could be better
rather than down grading or piecemeal removal of services. The streetscape project by government is
taking too long to implement that council should be pushing the responsible depart-ment to activate and complete. The entrance to our town is an embar-
rassment. The north end entrance has many dead
trees and a dilapidated tin fence that greet people coming into town. In the south end entrance to town people
are greeted by a skeletal frame work re-mains of a huge shed and associated rubble. Our graffiti-ridden town is looking tired and
we have had in recent weeks, thousands of tourists pass through our town with we would at least hope, a favourable impression of the town, although establishments on Paterson Street the main street, or otherwise the Stuart Highway, could do with a lick of paint
that hopefully, the street scape project may help to achieve. There needs to be removal of dead car
bodies off our streets and removal of tree stumps from foot paths in some streets. Building footpaths should be employment
creating projects for locals. The Australian Government announced in
the 2021-22 Budget, a commitment to de-velop a new indigenous skills, engagement, and employment Program (ISEP). The Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs
is seeking input into its development. An incoming Regional Council should be
switched on to these developments by the Australian Government to have input. At their request, I met with Peter Wood and
Fran Kilgariff from the Singleton Horticulture Project. I believe the water allocation for the project
is excessive, as was the scale of the project considering climate change effects and inconsistent rainfall patterns of late, along with continuing rise in temperature. These would have a detrimental effect to
the recharge rate of the aquifer as well as to the environment and places of cultural significance. It seems likely though, the project will go
ahead beginning with a downscaled version. It was suggested to Mr. Wood that in that
event, the Horticulture Project should estab-lish a shop front recruiting office in Tennant Creek to enable people of this region and town to apply for jobs on the project at its thousand people accommodation facility and other sites of the project. This is a project the Barkly Regional Coun-
cil should be right onto. – David Curtis Snr, 13 Wolseley Street,
Tennant Creek.

Former councillor has big vision for incoming Regional Council
RESOURCE companies are seeing some very prom-ising results in Tennant Creek and the broader Barkly region, supported by new geoscience data and explo-ration grants from the Territory Government.Under the multimillion dollar Resourcing the Territory ini-
tiative, the Territory Government is supporting mineral and petroleum exploration and development across the region. The initiative provides high quality geoscience data to
attract companies into the area and offers grants to support innovative exploration activities. Now it is seeing some really promising results in the Barkly region.Emmerson Resources Limited has been searching for gold
at its exploration sites near Tennant Creek and their recent gold intercept results are very encouraging. The WA based company has announced a joint venture
with the Tennant Consolidated Mining Group (TCMG) and has announced high-grade gold deposits have been dis-covered during recent exploration. These encouraging exploration results will help support the
case for development of a gold processing hub in Tennant Creek, which is currently the subject of a feasibility study by TCMG.Strategic Energy Resources Ltd has also acknowledged
the key role that geoscience data and grant funding from the Territory Government has played in attracting them to explore the Barkly and supporting their exploration efforts.Numerous other companies are currently exploring for
gold and copper in the Tennant Creek and Barkly region, including Newcrest Mining, Rio Tinto, Castile Resources, Encounter Resources, Inca Minerals, Greenvale Mining, King River Resources and more.Minister for Mining and Industry, Nicole Manison said
the Territory Labor Government is focused on securing
investment opportunities for the Territory and creating more local jobs.“We are serious about getting on with the job of growing
our economy to $40 billion by 2030, with 20 mining projects currently working towards a Final Investment Decision (FID) in the Territory with a combined value of $6.2 billion and potential to create 5700 construction jobs and 3400 ongoing jobs,” she said.“We know our resources sector is playing a huge role in
our economic come back, which is why we announced record funding of $9.5m for more mineral exploration - to drive more mining and create more jobs across the Territory, with the funding to be on going.
“Our message is clear, if you are looking for the next re-source or mining investment, come to the Territory.”Emmerson Resources Limited CEO and Managing Direc-
tor, Rob Bills aid Tennant Creek is one of Australia’s highest grade gold districts and with the recent influx of exploration companies on the back of new geological data from the Northern Territory Geological Survey, a new and exciting exploration hotspot! “Exploration and the discovery of new gold and copper
deposits is the key to revitalising Tennant Creek as an ex-ploration and mining hub. Emmerson has been exploring the Tennant Creek Mineral Field for over a decade and has a track record of new discoveries through applying new technology and geological concepts,” he said.“Our Mauretania discovery is a great example, where
recent drilling has intersected gold beneath the known high grade gold mineralisation that will likely become the first new open pit deposit in the area. Emmerson has part-nered with Tennant Consolidated Mining Group where they are establishing a central mill, the key to monetising and unlocking these stranded gold and copper deposits within the Tennant Creek district.“In addition, Emmerson has partnered with the Traditional
Owners in striking a landmark Joint Venture over the Jasper Hills area, whereby the Traditional owners have a direct equity, plus employment and training opportunities. “Emmerson regard this agreement as an important mile-
stone that builds on a strong partnership with the TOs, and hopefully is the first of many such agreements that will share the benefits of an exciting future of exploration, mining and processing in Tennant Creek district.”To find out more visit: https://resourcingtheterritory.nt.gov.

THE very first editor of the Tennant Times returned to Tennant Creek last week and was amazed the publication was still going strong.Dennis Mann was the editor for a year in
1975.The former teacher at the area school was
approached by the Apex Club to take on the role.Mr Mann and his wife Maureen (pictured
left) are on holiday and stopped by to revisit the town for the first time since they left at the end of 1975.They took time out to view the hospital,
where his daughter was born, and the Uniting Church and Old Telegraph Station.“I loved the Telegraph Station,” he said.“We will spend the next few days mooching
around and reminiscing.”

IN a change from their usual Members BBQ, the Memorial Club offered members a pig on a spit last Saturday.Delightful smells wafted
through the air as members waited for the emergence of the end product, which end-ed up being so well cooked and tender that it collapsed off the spit. Needless to say there were
plenty of people willing to volunteer to taste test what was served up and proclaim it well done – they even remembered to have apple sauce on hand just for the right finishing touch.

NAIDOC WEEK 2021
IT may have been two weeks late, but our local NAIDOC Committee was determined that the events they had planned would go ahead as soon as it was safe to do so, so Monday morning marchers gathered outside the NLC office for the walk to Nyinkka Nyunyu to celebrate NAIDOC Week. The weather was kind to the marchers with little wind and beautiful sunshine as they made their way down Paterson Street, even the police vehicle that led the march was carrying Aboriginal flags on the bonnet, in keeping with the day.Once everyone had arrived at Nyinkka Nyunyu, the very important task of giving out the Awards to First Nations people who have shown Outstanding commitment to the com-munity of Tennant Creek over the last year.Among the winners were Linda Turner and David Curtis Snr who were both honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards, and Zac O’Donnell who was given the Youth Achievement award. Ronald Plummer was named Male Elder of the Year and Annie Morrison was named Female Elder of the Year. Jurnkkurakurr Volunteers were also recognised for all their hard work trying to minimise the night time social problems with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Congratulations go to all award winners for their work in the community to make Tennant Creek the wonderful place it is.
