LetterMarch 1, 2016Dear Employee, In Alabama a patient is diagnosed with colorectal cancer every 3.5 hours and someone dies of the disease every 9 hours. Thesediagnoses and deaths could largely be prevented through adequate screening. Alabama has an estimated 392,100 people who need to be screened. Based on data from our insurance carriers, it is estimated that UAB and UAB Medicine have more than 1,800 employees who need to be screened. As president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, CEO of the UAB Health System, and director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, we recognize the imperative need to fight colorectal cancer and save lives. As the largest employer and a major academic medical center in Alabama we not only have the responsibility to change these numbers, but also an opportunity to be an example to our community and state. But we need your help.UAB supports and encourages preventative screenings to help identify health issues before they become serious. As part of this effort, UAB and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have joined forces with an initiative called “80 by 18” that encourages you to take action.Although this is a national ACS effort, we are committed to reaching 80 percent of all UAB employees aged 50 and older to get screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.Colorectal cancer screening is important because it can prevent cancer or find it early when it is easier to treat. There areseveral acceptable methods for colorectal cancer screening. It is important that you educate yourself about the options that are available. Someof the screening tests may seem daunting but are generally simple, safe and widely used. We encourage you to take small steps that will make a big difference in your life:Educate yourself about colorectal cancer today. Click here for detailed information.Speak to your physician about your history and ask for colorectal cancer screening. Your physician can speak with you about the different types of screenings and assist with scheduling.
