USING THE FUEL ECONOMY GUIDE

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S.Department of Energy (DOE) produce the Fuel EconomyGuide to help car buyers choose the most fuel-efficient vehiclethat meets their needs. EPA compiles the fuel economy dataand DOE publishes them in print and on the web atwww.fueleconomy.gov (see p. 2).

FUEL ECONOMY ESTIMATES

Each vehicle in this guide has two fuel economy estimates.

City represents urban driving, in which a vehicle isstarted in the morning (after being parked all night) anddriven in stop-and-go rush hour traffic.

Highway represents a mixture of rural and interstatehighway driving in warmed-up vehicles, typical of longertrips in free-flowing traffic.

EPA miles-per-gallon (MPG) estimates are based on labtesting and are adjusted to reflect real-world driving condi-tions for an average U.S. motorist. WHY YOUR FUEL ECONOMY CAN VARY

A vehicle’s fuel economy is not a constant or fixed number; itvaries among vehicles of the same make and model, and it willvary over time for an individual vehicle. Many factors affect avehicle’s fuel economy:

When, where, and how the vehicle is driven: Frequentacceleration and braking necessary in stop-and-go traffic andon hilly terrain hurt fuel economy, and aggressive driving (hardaccelerating and braking) reduces it even more. Cold weathercan also reduce MPG, since your engine doesn’t run effi-ciently until it is warmed up.

Vehicle maintenance: A poorly tuned engine burns more fuel,so fuel economy will suffer if your engine is not in tune.Keeping tires at the correct pressure and changing the air filteron a regular basis can improve fuel economy. Also, newenergy-saving motor oils can improve MPG.

Inherent variations in vehicles: Small variations in the wayvehicles are manufactured and assembled can cause MPGvariations among vehicles of the same make and model.Usually, differences are small, but a few drivers will see amarked deviation from the EPA estimates.

ANNUAL FUEL COST ESTIMATES

This guide provides annual fuel cost estimates for eachvehicle. This estimate is based on the assumptions that youtravel 15,000 miles per year (55% under city driving conditionsand 45% under highway conditions) and that fuel costs $1.55/gallon for regular unleaded gasoline and $1.65/gallon forpremium. Cost-per-gallon assumptions for vehicles that useother fuel types are discussed at the beginning of thosevehicle sections.

GAS GUZZLER TAX

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 requires auto companies to pay a gasguzzler tax on the sale of passenger cars with exceptionally lowfuel economy. Such vehicles are identified in this guide by theword “Tax.” In the dealer showroom, the words “Gas Guzzler”and the amount of the tax are listed on the vehicle’s fuel economylabel. The tax does not apply to light trucks.

� Vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs)weighing more than 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weightare classified as heavy-duty vehicles. Fuel economyregulations do not apply to these vehicles, so they arenot tested and fuel economy labels are not posted intheir windows.

� Some manufacturers may not submit a vehicle’s fuel economyinformation to EPA in time to be included in the guide. How-ever, you can usually find this information atwww.fueleconomy.gov, which is updated regularly.

� The availability of some vehicles is restricted.

You could save $300-$500 in fuel costseach year by choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle in a particular class. Thiscan add up to thousands of dollars over avehicle’s lifetime. Fuel-efficient models comein all shapes and sizes, so you need notsacrifice utility or size.

Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides fuel costinformation (described on the inside front cover). The fueleconomy web site, www.fueleconomy.gov, features an annual fuelcost calculator, which allows you to insert your local gasolineprices and consider your driving preference to achieve the mostaccurate fuel cost information for your vehicle.

STRENGTHEN NATIONAL ENERGY SECURITY

Buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle can help strengthen ournational energy security by reducing our dependence onforeign oil. Half of the oil used to produce the gasoline you putin your tank is imported. The United States uses about 20 millionbarrels of oil per day, two-thirds of which is used for transporta-tion. Petroleum imports cost us about $2 billion a week—that’smoney that could be used to fuel our own economy.

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel adds greenhousegases, including carbon dioxide, to the earth’s atmosphere.Greenhouse gases trap heat and thuswarm the earth because they prevent asignificant proportion of infrared radiationfrom escaping into space.

Vehicles with lower fuel economy burnmore fuel, creating more carbon dioxide.Every gallon of gasoline your vehicle burnsputs 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into theatmosphere. You can reduce your contribu-tion to global warming by choosing a vehicle with higher fueleconomy.

By choosing a vehicle that achieves 25 miles per gallonrather than 20 miles per gallon, you can prevent the releaseof about 15 tons of greenhouse gas pollution over thelifetime of your vehicle.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY

� Aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration andbraking) can lower your gas mileage by as much as 33%at highway speeds and 5% around town (costing you asmuch as 49¢/gallon!).

� Observe the speed limit—each 5 miles per hour (mph) youdrive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 10¢/gallon.

� Avoid idling—idling gets 0 miles per gallon.

KEEP YOUR CAR IN SHAPE

� Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune can improve gasmileage by about 4%—repairing a faulty oxygen sensorcan improve fuel economy by as much as 40%!

� Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage byas much as 10% (and protect your engine).

� Keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressureand using the recommended grade of motor oil can saveas much as 3–5¢/gallon. The manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure can be found on the tire informationplacard and/or vehicle certification label located on thevehicle door edge, doorpost, or glove-box door, or insidethe trunk lid.

PLAN AND COMBINE TRIPS

� A warmed-up engine is more fuel-efficient than a cold one.Many short trips taken from a cold start can use twice asmuch fuel as one multipurpose trip covering the samedistance when the engine is warmed up and efficient. Tripplanning not only saves fuel, but also reduces wear andtear on your car.

COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS VEHICLESThis section supplies the driving range and fuel economy values for vehicles designed to be operated on compressed natural gas(CNG). For bi-fuel vehicles, the values for both gasoline and CNG are shown. Bi-fuel vehicles are designed to be operated on eitherof two fuels, in separate tanks, and can switch between the two.

CNG fuel is normally dispensed in “equivalent gallons,” where one equivalent gallon is equal to 121.5 cubic feet of CNG. Therefore, thefuel economy values are shown in miles per gallon-equivalent. Annual fuel cost estimates are based on an average fuel price of $1.30per gallon of CNG and $1.55 per gallon of gasoline.

The driving range is shown in miles and represents the distance the vehicle can travel on a full tank (or tanks) of fuel during combinedcity and highway driving (55% city and 45% highway).

LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (PROPANE) VEHICLESThis section contains the estimated city and highway fuel economy values and the driving range for passenger cars and light trucksdesigned to be operated on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is commonly known as propane. For bi-fuel vehicles, both thegasoline and the LPG mpg values and driving ranges are listed, if available. Bi-fuel LPG vehicles have two fuel tanks. Annual fuel costestimates are based on an average fuel price of $1.30 per gallon of LPG and $1.55 per gallon of gasoline.

ELECTRIC VEHICLESThis section contains the driving range and fuel economy values for fully electric-powered passenger vehicles. The fuel economyvalues for electric vehicles are shown in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, instead of miles per gallon. A lower number of kilowatt-hoursmeans a more efficient vehicle.

The driving range is shown in miles and represents the maximum distance the vehicle can travel under optimum conditions before thebattery needs recharging. The actual energy consumption and range of the vehicle will vary depending on driving conditions, batterycondition, and accessory usage, and is strongly affected by outside temperature and the use of heating and air conditioning. Fuel costswill vary considerably because of the differences in electricity costs across the United States.

You can calculate the fuel cost (in dollars) of driving your electric vehicle for a year by multiplying the energy consumption for thevehicle as listed below (in kilowatt-hours/100 miles) by your local electricity rate (in dollars per kilowatt-hour), multiplying that by theannual miles the vehicle will be driven, and dividing by 100.

Check with your dealer for availability, as some electric vehicles may be offered for sale or lease only in certain parts of the country.

DIESEL VEHICLESThis section contains fuel economy values for diesel-fueled vehicles. Diesel fuel contains approximately 10% more energy per gallonthan gasoline. In addition, diesel engines have higher compression ratios, run “lean,” and are unthrottled, giving them a substantial fueleconomy advantage over gasoline engines. Annual fuel cost is estimated assuming 15,000 miles of travel each year (55% city and45% highway) and a diesel fuel cost of $1.40 per gallon.

ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY

Although fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are not expected to reach themass market before 2010, a limited number will be available forsale or lease to demonstration fleets in 2003-4. Vehicleavailability will be restricted to drivers in certain parts of thecountry with a readily accessible hydrogen supply. The vehiclelisted below is the first FCV to be emission-certified by EPA.

FCVs represent a radical departure from conventional vehicleswith internal combustion engines. They use emerging technol-ogy with the potential to substantially reduce harmful emissions,as well as energy use and our dependence on foreign oil. Likebattery-electric vehicles, FCVs are propelled by electric motors.The important difference, however, is that rather than storingelectricity by recharging batteries, fuel cells produce electricitydirectly from the chemical energy of hydrogen fuel.

FCVs are more efficient than vehicles with internal combustionengines, and the only by-product of a hydrogen fuel cell is water.Like hybrid-electric and battery-electric vehicles, FCVs may alsoincorporate other advanced automotive technologies to increaseefficiency.

THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

Much work remains before FCVs can be mass-marketed and soldat local dealerships. Significant research and development isrequired to reduce costs and improve performance in areas suchas driving range, cold-weather operation, and durability. A newrefueling infrastructure will be required to make hydrogen fuelwidely available to consumers.

Automakers, fuel cell developers, component suppliers, govern-ment agencies, and others are working hard to accelerate theintroduction of FCVs. In fact, partnerships such as the DOE-ledFreedomCAR Initiative and the California Fuel Cell Partnershiphave been formed to encourage private companies and govern-ment agencies to work together to prove this technology’s viabilityand move FCVs toward widespread commercialization. FCVs can store hydrogen on-board or can be equipped toproduce hydrogen on-board from a liquid fuel like gasoline oralcohol; if hydrogen is stored on-board.
