At the same time the sheer size and number of passengers and crew create challenges for the designers and regulators. That is why MSC Cruises and their chosen shipyard, STX France, are relying on Bureau Veritas as their classification and certification partner for the new 5,700-passenger Vista class vessels. Building of the first ship is already underway. The Vista class will be 315 m long and 43 m wide and will be able to accommodate 7,200 persons on board, including 5,700 passengers in 2,250 passenger staterooms. The first vessel is due to start operating during summer 2017, followed by a sister ship two years later. Destined for the Maltese flag they will be the largest cruise ships ever registered in Europe. The 167,600 gt vessels will be powered by two propulsion pods of 20 MW and will meet the highest standards and regulations including Safe Return to Port. The hotel offer will include staterooms that can be combined into small flats for family guests. The traditional Yacht Club exclusive area will be maintained with a large solarium, a private lounge and restaurant, and several large duplex cabins located at the front of the ship. Behind the scenes this new class of ships will be cleaner and benefit from more efficient technology with respect to reduced water emissions, enhanced energy efficiency thanks to hull and propulsion optimization, and installation of new generation scrubbers for compliance with the latest MARPOL regulations. Where size creates challenges is in the oversize vertical zones and the need to evacuate large numbers of people. These challenges will be met by using the Alternative Design solutions permitted under SOLAS regulations. These are based on complex risk assessment involving the use of sophisticated simulation software which can model smoke and heat propagation as well as evacuation analysis. These studies will be managed by Bureau Veritas’ Tecnitas subsidiary. The alternative design studies will allow the use of lifeboats of about 300- person capacity each, roughly twice the normal maximum prescriptive size, to provide speedy and orderly abandonment if required. BUREAU VERITAS WINS INNOVATIVE CANADIAN GAS FUEL CONTRACTS

The first block for the Seven Seas Explorer, the newest luxurious shipfor Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ fleet, was lowered into the buildingdock during a special ceremony at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyardin Genoa, Italy, in January this year. The 56,000 gt, 750-passenger ship will have one of the highest spaceratios in the cruise industry as well as one of the highest staff-to-guestratios. It is scheduled to be delivered in June 2016.During this ceremony, a box containing three coins, one 1921 US Peacedollar, one 1959 Italian Lire, for the year Fincantieri was formed, anda special coin minted for the event, was welded into the keel. This event is an important milestone in the construction process ofthis vessel presented by Regent Cruises as the most luxurious shipever built. Bureau Veritas is very proud to be the society chosen by theowners and the yard for the classification and certification of thisoutstanding cruise [email protected]

Dutch engineers are famous for being careful with cash. They want things done right, but at the right price. SoHuib van Leeuwen, Vice-President Technical Operationsand Compliance, Windstar Cruises, is the right man forrunning a fleet of small upmarket cruise ships. “Thechallenge of smaller ships is that you don’t have theeconomies of scale,” he explains. “You have to keep avigilant eye on costs, you haven’t got the scale and returnon investment that big cruise vessels have.” Huib started his career as a seagoing engineer andcame to Windstar Cruises as a superintendent with HALin 1999, which is when he first worked with BureauVeritas. Since then Windstar has changed hands twiceand moved sharply upmarket. “Today we are the CondeNast No 1 in the world small cruise line and we areproud of that,” he says. “And that is another challenge,to make and keep that position. To do so we all have towork together: our staff here in Seattle, our people onboard the ships and of course our service partners likeclass.”Windstar operates a fleet of small luxury cruise shipsknown for their intimate yacht style experience andunique voyages to the world’s best small ports. “Weoperate three luxury sailing yachts and an all-suitepower yacht, and we have two more joining the fleet

soon. First they will have a major refurbishment in Italy,”explains Huib. “Then the two vessels will move to join the rest of our fleet under BV class. We haverecently also moved our ISM/ISPS/MLC and ISO 14000certification all to BV.”A special challenge for Windstar is that they are almostunique in operating large sailing vessels. “You needspecial knowledge for the masts and rigging,” explainsHuib. “And as there are no set criteria for masts andrigging and sails you need a class surveyor who knowsthe ships, who knows you and who you can work within an atmosphere of trust to make sure everything iskept in good shape and with a mutual understanding ofeach other’s needs. I get that from BV, and I appreciatethat.”Looking ahead Huib has a vision. “We are very proudwith the new vessels joining the fleet. They will allowus to grow our product and also extend our cruisingrange,” he says. “But we don’t want to stop there. Wesee a real market for our high-end product and we hopeto acquire more vessels and bring them up to ourstandards in the future. A dream would be to build anew Windstar vessel from the keel up with a new sailsystem making it the most efficient vessel afloat.”www.windstarcruises.com

IMO’s revised International Code for the Construction andEquipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code)will enter into force on 1st July 2016.The IGC Code was first adopted in 1983 to provide aninternational standard for the safe carriage by sea of liquefiedgases and this new IGC Code is the first major revision. As the class leader in gas carriers Bureau Veritas has carriedout a gap analysis and developed a guidance document intendedto give an overview of the main changes included in the new IGC

Code. As an example Chapter 4 regarding containment systemshas been completely rewritten. All the main new requirementsare presented in the BV document, in particular the location ofcargo tanks, personnel protection, fire protection, turretcompartment and use of cargo as fuel.Equivalences between the old and new IGC are also listed. Twin dual-fuel W9L 34DF generatorswill be able to burn LNG from one single 200 cbm Type C tank below themain deck and there will be a hybrid battery pack power supply for

generating zero emissions energy at quay or during manoeuvring andfor any low-load operation. The Transport Desgagnés tankers will have two 300 cbm Type C LNGtanks on the deck powering the dual-fuel ME 5RT Flex 50 DF main engineand two 6L20DF engines and one 8L20DF auxiliary engine and two 3000 kW boilers.BV is currently engaged in gas fuel conversion or newbuilding projectsinvolving chemical tankers, small-scale LNG tankers, LNG bunkertankers, cargo and passenger ferries, product tankers and [email protected]
