What possesses a young man from England to travel to the war theatres of Iraq and Syria andblow himself up... killing half a dozen Iraqis in the process? Talha Asmal, 17, lived in a part of thecountry that has sadly seen several other of its residents turn to terrorism. A number of the 7/7London bombers had links to Dewsbury, a small town in West Yorkshire. Just days after thebombers targeted London’s transport system, killing over 50 people in the process, NewScotland Yard found their safe house in Leeds where the gang had built over a dozen improvised

bombs. Dewsbury is of course but a few miles south of the city. Interestingly, police failed to locate around 20people believed to have played a supportive role - some I understand lived in Dewsbury.

That was a decade ago and Asmal was but a small child. Despite a number of government backed ‘engagement’programmes enabled to counter the growing influence of ISIS and the now lesser attraction of al-Qaida, still dozensof UK nationals opt to make the trip across Europe to find solace with terrorists in faraway lands. I’m not sure whatthey think they will find, but in all reality there is only one end game that awaits. Asmal’s family believe he wasinfluenced and brainwashed by the rhetoric of ISIS found on so many Internet sites - much to the sound of stirringmusic. I am of the opinion they are probably correct, but Eye Spy understands that MI5 has never stopped its searchfor others who may be physically operating in such towns as Dewsbury to recruit. Either way, Asmal becomesBritain’s youngest-ever suicide bomber, and unless there is more done to lessen the perceived ‘attraction’ of ISIS,he certainly won’t be the last one.

Of interest and relevance to a major new tradecraft feature that starts in this edition, at travel points around thecountry, Customs and Police have introduced a new line of questioning with regards to some people suspected ofwanting to reach the gangs of ISIS. Body language reading is an important tool. However, there are so many rusesto counter suspicion, especially with those intent on reaching ISIS. Thus security services are placing much moreemphasis on the spoken word, information and subsequent investigation. Hopefully, a combination of thesepractises will allow officers to identify those people who are about to embark on a journey that they will ultimatelyregret, leaving families such as the Asmals distraught.

Just briefly, many readers have registered an interest inEye Spy’s new An Insider’s Guide to 500 Spy Sites inLondon. Eye Spy 97 contains a fascinating feature on anumber of sites linked to the D-Day spies. Full orderdetails will appear shortly in the magazine and on-line.
