03 FOUNDING PHILOSOPHYThe founding philosophy and ethos of the IAC are drawn from the following realities:

• Culture is a set of beliefs and practices that animates, sustains and binds a people, thereby defining identity. Although the past is our bedrock, it must continuously evolve.

• The human mind is a conscious set of cognitive faculties that process, reason and perceive in a holistic framework always through a language. The integrative process of thinking, wanting and feeling, leads to the creation of objects of beauty, which might or might not be of any formal use. This experiential awareness is the basis of all artistic creations.

• Art provides multiplicity of views that enhance self-reflection, self-dialogue, communication and visual literacy. This increased sense of empathy, in turn, develops a tolerance towards the ‘other’, the ‘different’ and the ‘outsider’.

• Culture impacts the individuals and decision-making processes in a society. It has the potential to bridge our worlds, connect and inspire communities, provide skills for development and essentially advocate change.

FEE STRUCTURE Average Tuition Cost of the First Semester

School of Architecture Design and Urbanism Rs. 144,000.00School of Digital and Cinematic Art Rs. 144,000.00School of Culture and Language Rs. 135,000.00School of Art Rs. 157,000.00

The fee structure at the Institute for Art and Culture is flexible and is based on the cost per course of study. The tuition fee is not a blanket charge per semester or a year; the student only pays for the courses she/he chooses to study. Hence the average cost shown above is just an estimate.

For instance, if a student takes admission in a degree course, she/he will pay the tuition fee for the core courses and the electives. Some courses cost less than the others so she/he can choose, in consultation with the Degree Incharge, what courses she/he can take for a particular semester and only pay for that. The number of courses taken can vary from semester to semester depending upon a student’s financial situation. If an applicant wants to take only one course she/he can do so and obtain a certificate for having passed that course. She/he would pay tuition fee for that course alone.

An applicant may also register in consultation with an advisor for a set of courses over two semesters with an independent study to earn a diploma and pay the tuition fee accordingly.

At the time of admission, a fee of Rs.10,000 is charged. Moreover, a Student Co-curricular Activity Fund of Rs.8,000 per semester will be charged as well. Security and other sundry charges may also apply.

As per Section 236I of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 every educational institution is required to collect advance income tax at the rate of 5% on the amount of fee paid to an educational institution where the annual fee (excluding refundable security deposit) exceeds Rs.200,000. This tax will be adjustable against final tax liability of the parent/guardian. So the student will be liable to pay advance income tax (where applicable) over and above the tuition fee.

CENTER FOR CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS The Center for Creative Partnerships (CCP), established under the School of Culture and Language, is the hub of conceiving, designing and implementing projects in the fields of art, culture and development. It is established with an aim to generate practical and hands-on knowledge of students in the proposed fields and to enrich and inform the practice with theoretical perspectives and academic inputs. By bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and contemporary trends, CCP removes out the distinction between traditional and modern, folk and classical practices, and provides the opportunity to bring both closer to enrich each other, through exchange, innovation and contemporizing.

SCHOOL OF ART (SOA)The School of Art offers degree programs in Fine Arts and Design with an integrated approach to Art and Design learning. It bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary art making practices of the region by recognizing their shared histories, processes of making and the interdependence of their prospective global faces. The School of Art believes that the highest standards of creative excellence are achieved when theoretical clarity is matched with expert practical knowledge. Therefore, rigorous studio practice is placed at the center of the School’s academic structure. The studio practice is complimented by a comprehensive History of Art and Theory of Art component that looks at local and global histories and theories of art making, as a way for our students to be able to situate and envision art-making vocabularies within social and cultural contexts.

In order to facilitate maximum academic freedom to meet personal goals, students are encouraged to construct a personalized academic scheme of study that is made up of a combination of courses across all four schools of IAC. The academic staff, course advisors, and tutors guide the students in these matters in accordance to their academic and professional goals ensuring that the student acquires all the necessary sets of skills needed for future career paths. Our goal is that at the end of the four years of undergraduate study, our student has a gainful experience and graduates with holistic knowledge of art education. With these aims, students are tutored accordingly and work towards their final degree show, which is comprised of their accumulated Art Portfolio and a Final Project or Degree Show exhibition. The School of Art envisions an artist who is not only equipped to pursue artistic practice, but also fulfills the demands of the creative industry. The School of Art graduate is an artist or designer who is an accomplished practitioner of the traditional and classical arts, equally proficient in using new media and technology for the production of contemporary works of art and design.

Aims and Objectives The objective of the School of Art is to provide a holistic art education that equips students with knowledge and skills to negotiate the global and the local, with an understanding and awareness of art practices. The School of Art believes in the significance of understanding this region’s cultural and artistic legacy, while also being sensitive to the wider global cultural movements at play. Visual Art in particular can serve as a vehicle to diffuse polarities, instill, or increase a greater sense of community and the diverse components it constitutes.

The School of Art aims to address gaps within the fields of Fine Arts, Design, Art History, and Theory, and imagines it to be a new dynamic space of learning and artistic encounter. In keeping with the wider ethos of the Institute for Art and Culture, students are enabled to think cross-regionally, and to consider the movement of ideas in and between time: cultures and their localized manifestations.

Another key component of our ethos is to understand that the distinction made today between ‘Fine Art’ and ‘Craft’, is a modern construct, therefore classical arts practice are embedded within the curriculum, to break down the hierarchy and bridge the gap that exists between contemporary and classical art practice and theory. The focus of the classical arts studio practice, history and theory hold a South Asian focus; though will also engage with wider Pan-Asian and European links. Finally, the School of Art supports an experimental and creative ethos within a clear studio structure, thus providing a supportive yet intellectually challenging environment. It is built on the idea that writing and criticism are creative practices in their own right, with their own techniques, ethics, and technologies.

KARKHANAThere is no denial to the dignity of manual jobs and much of the world has accepted that. During the 19th century, theorists of the time tried to draw a line among arts. Many were declared crafts and some were labeled lesser arts. This division was very popular and Asian region was also caught up in it. Artisans were looked down upon and their creations were declared mere craftsmanship. This folly is being realized by a small segment of the society but the majority still belongs to the old school of thought. The Institute for Culture and Art has taken up this shortcoming of our society as a mission to work towards the recognition of not only our traditional arts but all those professions in which body and mind are employed equally. For this purpose, the philosophy of Karkhana is initiated, which is to encourage the local artisans (Ustads) to share their skills with the youth. It is a concept to integrate the arts and crafts inclusive of both traditional and modern. The Ustad, the master of his/her field will conduct classes in the time tested traditional method set in Ustad/Shagird relationship as living tradition bearers. The students working at the Karkhana will build and explore traditional art practices from this region in order to develop a firm sense of belonging, widen their cultural references and experience ownership of this region’s artistic legacies.

Empowering the Kalasha Communities through Safeguarding their Intangible Cultural Heritage – August 2016 - April 2017The purpose of this project was to Safeguard the Kalasha Cultural Heritage, promote cultural diversity, religious plurality, and communal harmony. This research project was carried out under THAAP and Institute for Art and Culture (IAC) in collaboration with UNESCO and was funded by Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, the Embassy of Switzerland.

The Kalasha people are one of the smallest religious minorities of Pakistan, numbering nearly 4200 people. They dwell in the Mumuret, Biriu, and Rukmu valleys (District Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The faculty of the SCL carried out research and documentation of their cultural practices using Community Based Inventorying (CBI). Frequent complaints and repeated demands of Kalasha community members over cases of past misrepresentation prompted this project. The transmission of the Kalasha heritage relies heavily upon oral traditions, with little to no present documentation carried out in collaboration with community members.

Fieldwork was carried out in the Kalasha Bumburet (Mumuret), Birir (Biriu), and Rumbur (Rukmu) valleys for a combined period of 87 days and a research and dissemination methodology was established to bring forth local perspective of Kalasha culture, which resulted in the formation of the first ever Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory of Pakistan. Submission of “Suri Jagek: The Kalasha Meteorological and Astronomical Practice of Observing the Sun, Moon, Stars, and Shadows” on UNESCO’s list of ICH in Need of Urgent Safeguarding was accepted unanimously, a great success for IAC!

Development of an Integrated Site Management Plan and Capacity Building for Sustainable Tourism Management of Selected Sikh Sites in Punjab – August 2019 - Ongoing

The IAC signed a contract with UNESCO for the project of “Development of an Integrated Site Management Plan and Capacity Building for Sustainable Tourism Management of Selected Sikh Sites in Punjab” on 30th August, 2019. The project aims to contribute towards the economic development of Punjab through cultural tourism. This will be achieved by promoting ef-fectively managed tourism to heritage sites of cultural interests. The project sites are Gurdwara Rohri Sahib, Eminabad and Gurdwara Sacha Sauda Sahib, Farooqabad.

Under this project, Integrated Site Management Plans will be created to safeguard the heritage value of the sites selected and promote sustainable tourism to the sites and surrounding areas. This will help to manage the demands and needs of the tangible heritage with an over and under lay-ering of the intangible heritage which embodies its value and significance. The balance created between these aspects will create a dynamic site of interest for tourists. This plan will also establish the appropriate strategy to balance the need to target economic growth as well as enhance sustaina-ble cultural tourism to these heritage sites.

The Curator for this exhibition was Dr. Sadia Kamran Pasha, Professor at SOA, IAC, who designed this as a utopian space and a safe haven for the practitioners of conventional arts and crafts. The exhibition remained open till 20 February, 2020, and showcased works of seasoned artists including, Risham Syed, Masooma Syed, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Sania Samad, Humaira Abid, Usman Saeed and Asif Sharif. Kashmir – The Thread that Connects us Dast-e Hunar Zinda HaOn 8 November, 2019, the Institute for Art and Culture hosted an exhibition and seminar on Kashmiri crafts to celebrate the undying spirit of Kashmiri art and cultural heritage. The aim of the exhibition, titled “Dast-e-Hunar Zinda Hai”, was to highlight that despite the oppression faced by the Kashmiri people, they have kept their heritage and culture alive through the art they have created, be it in the form of woven textiles, carpets or furniture. The IAC supports our Kashmiri brothers through this difficult time and celebrates the beauty that they continue to create through the war and strife.

Hot Mess - Contemporary art from PakistanA group of young, romantic artists decided to exhibit their artworks ‘fresh from the studio’. In such an effort, they created this HOT MESS. Their thoughts and creations appear to be in a state of disarray but they maintain an undeniable attractiveness and immaculate perception of the ambiguous times they are living in. They enjoyed putting this show together and hoped that the viewers emancipate the beauty and zest in their works.
