T he highest rated TV show in China, the CCTV’s Spr ing Fest iva l Evening Gala

marked i ts 30th anniversary on Chinese New Year’s Eve in 2012, with 770 mi l l ion v iewers. Prepar ing for 2013’s event with a Chinese New Year theme, CCTV seized the opportunity to create a highly engaging ser ies of programmes, which saw the part ic ipat ion of internat ional superstars including Yanni and Cel ine Dion, in addit ion to a number of China’s household names.

The l ive broadcast of the 31st Spr ing Fest iva l Evening Gala lasted four and a hal f hours. For a celebrat ion that cal ls for merr iment and music, i t was def in i te ly essent ia l to have a seamless sound system - suppl ied by Rightway Audio Consultants - that showcased the high art ist ic qual i ty of the Spr ing Fest iva l Evening Gala. As for the stage design, a panorama LED and a mult i layer ascending/descending stage boosted the show’s specia l v isual effects.

The Sound of MusicAs the most important nat ional celebrat ion, the Evening Gala product ion team had to observe r ig id standards for the acoust ic system, compris ing of stable and high qual i ty audio equipment.

Insta l led in the CCTV’s Studios 1 and 8 were L-Acoust ics loudspeakers. The acoust ics system in CCTV’s Studio 1 comprised L-Acoust ics’ coaxia l and KUDO l ine sources loudspeakers.

L-Acoust ics’ new generat ion KUDO l ine source loudspeakers are wel l known for a h igh-end sonic performance with unprecedented f lex ib i l i ty, embodying the paradigm shi f t that a l l sound designers have been wait ing for: The Revolut ionary K-Louver Modular Direct iv i ty and DOSC Waveguide Technology. Wavefront Sculpture Technology can now be performed in one plane whi le direct iv i ty is modif ied in the perpendicular plane; a s igni f icant evolut ion in L-Acoust ics pioneer ing WST technology.

The KUDO system is dr iven by the dedicated LA8 ampl i f ied control ler, which ensures act ive system l inear izat ion, inte l l igent t ransducer protect ion, and opt imizat ion for two operat ing modes.

The KUDO enclosure is made of f i rst-grade Balt ic birch plywood, ensur ing maximum acoust ical and mechanical integr i ty. The four-point r igging system is ent i re ly capt ive and almost inv is ib le when recessed into the cabinet. I t a l lows f ly ing up to 21 KUDO enclosures in a var iable-curvature vert ical l ine source array with an inter-e lement f lex ib i l i ty f rom 0° to 10°. The r igging system is designed to conf igure KUDO as a hor izontal constant-curvature l ine source array with f ixed 10° inter-e lement angles.

DiGiCo SD7 Digital ConsoleThe DiGiCo SD7 is a compact, wor ld-class dig i ta l mix ing system that was perfect for the Evening Gala’s operat ions. Before th is event, the console was used for ear l ier CCTV programmes.

Power ing the SD7 is the latest in h igh density dig i ta l processing, the a l l -new Stealth mix ing and rout ing engine, exclusive to DiGiCo. Based on the latest incarnat ion of FPGA (F ie ld Programmable Gate Array) technology, known as Super FPGA, i t is a core component of the SD7’s quantum leap in console design. Al l ied to three of the latest generat ion of SHARC® effects and control processors, i t endows the console with a stagger ing eight t imes the overal l processing power of a D5 Live.

The benef i ts are to be found not only in the high resolut ion audio processing that makes 128 s imultaneous 192kHz s ignal paths readi ly achievable, or 256 at 48kHz/96kHz, but l imit less f lex ib i l i ty too. Included in the console are 448 s imultaneous opt ical and 224 MADI and 24 analogue and AES/EBU connect ions, plus 128 buses, 32 matr ix buses and 32 graphic equal isers, to bui ld the biggest and most complex shows.

Installation of TAIDEN’s Congress SystemsThe AU Convent ion Center comprises one large conference hal l that seats 2,550 people, one 681-seater medium-size conference hal l , one mult i funct ional hal l , four smal l meet ing rooms, one VIP meet ing room, and f ive press rooms.

For the center, a dedicated technical team was assigned by TAIDEN to assist and support with i ts congress systems from the prel iminary design, through the insta l lat ion, t i l l the opening and closing ceremonies.

Al l 13 meet ing rooms are equipped with TAIDEN’s congress systems: 3,780 pieces of the HCS-4100 ser ies Ful ly Digi ta l Congress System Contr ibut ion Units, HCS-5100 ser ies Infrared Language Distr ibut ion System, matr ix switchers, v ideo auto-tracking system, and 14 pieces of the HCS-4393 remote s ign- in system.

As al l the seats are f ixed, a tota l of 213 seats in the podium, as wel l for the guests’ area, are insta l led with the HCS-4365D Ful ly Digi ta l Congress Units (Useful for d iscussions, s imultaneous interpretat ions, and vot ing).

The innovative HCS-5100R Digital Infrared Receiver provides up to 32 channels, and its LCD display indicates the channel number, language, battery level, and signal status.

At the opening ceremony, the media center was opened to journal ists coming from al l over the wor ld, and they were provided with Engl ish, French, Arabic and Portuguese translat ions by four uni ts of the HCS-4112/29 broadcast standard audio distr ibutors. Unique to other internat ional conference centers, a l l the s imultaneous interpretat ion units in the AU Convent ion Center are wired, ensur ing perfect sound qual i ty and convenience.

The AU Convent ion Center emerged as a user of a record-breaking number of TAIDEN products used for an Afr ican project appl icat ion. The design and insta l lat ion was not only successful ly executed; the TAIDEN team was awarded with h igh appreciat ion f rom the AU headquarters.

XL Video suppl ied LED screens, project ion, camera, PPU and screen management system for The BRIT Awards 2013 with MasterCard, staged at London’s O2 Arena and presented by James Corden.

I t is the 11th consecut ive year that XL (and Product ion Manager Paul Wood) have been involved as V ideo suppl ier for the high prof i le annual Music Awards, again working with BRIT Awards Product ions (Papi lo) and BRITs TV.

This year’s show featured show-stopping l ive performances from Muse, Just in T imber lake, Robbie Wi l l iams, Taylor Swif t , Emel i Sande and One Direct ion amongst others.

Set DesignPeter Bingemann’s set design included a dynamic backdrop of three dimensional Ribbons of vary ing s izes, hal f of which were s imple l ight boxes and hal f were “V ideo Ribbons” using a tota l of 120 square metres of Pix led FX-11 LED t i les to f i l l them.

The main stage screen – which f lew out to a l low band entrances and exi ts - was made from Absen 6 mm LED and measured 6 metres wide by 10 metres high.

During band changeovers, a h igh ‘c losedown’ screen measur ing 6 metres wide by 3.5 metres high, bui l t f rom Lighthouse 12mm LED screens and three v ideo r ibbons, f lew in downstage whi lst Awards were presented on the B Stage in the middle of the audience.

For One Direct ion, XL suppl ied the two LED screens needed for an overs ized scenic pinbal l machine on which the UK’s number one boy band performed. A f ive-square-metre sect ion of BARCO NX6 (6mm resolut ion) formed the Scoreboard, and the playf ie ld f loor was made up of Pix led F12 (12mm resolut ion), measur ing 3 metres wide by 6 metres high.

Two Lighthouse R7 screens, measur ing eight metre wide by 4.5 metre high, were suppl ied in the standard stage lef t and r ight posit ions, with four 16ft x 9ft ‘ repeater’ project ion screens posit ioned around the O2 Arena to ensure that everyone had a good v iew of the stage act ion and nominat ions’ packages.

B ARCO, known as a global market leader in v isual izat ion and display solut ions, was once again selected as lead v isual izat ion system

provider for China Centra l Telev is ion’s (CCTV) annual Chinese New Year Gala, which took place on February 9 th th is year. BARCO’s LED backdrop and image processing system were used to provide the gala with mind-blowing v isual effects. The premium image qual i ty and the re l iable and stable operat ion of BARCO’s products helped ensure a smooth presentat ion.

According to CCTV’s research, over 750 mi l l ion people watched the Chinese New Year celebrat ion on TV.

Advanced Visual TechnologiesIn order to create the best possible v isual show for the audience, a wide range of cutt ing-edge technologies were used. The main screen in the gala hal l , for example, had to process mult ip le s ignals of HD and 3D v ideo streaming. As such, a super ior standard of colour reproduct ion, re l iabi l i ty and t ime delay was del ivered.

The main screen, measur ing 292 m², consisted of 1,460 t i les of BARCO 6mm ILi te 6BK LED with h igh pixel p i tch and br ightness. They can be quickly set up using BARCO’s precise LED rental structures and ul t imate v ideo processing technology, thus ensur ing accurate colour reproduct ion and uni formity, and unequal led br ightness. F ive units of BARCO Encore VP took care of the overal l image processing: Four uni ts for IMAG scal ing and one unit for preview, meanwhi le keeping four HD (1920x1080) s ignals synchronized perfect ly.

“For cost effect ive purposes, we used a s imi lar LED display system to last year’s. But th is t ime, more advanced v ideo technologies were adopted,” commented Mr. Chen Yan, General Stage Designer for the 2013 CCTV Chinese New Year Evening Gala. “With the jo int efforts of excel lent domest ic and overseas technology providers, we managed to give the audience a wonderfu l gala.”

The portable ILite 6BK LED unit by BARCO comes in two versions, for f ixed installations, as well as rental structures, where it can be easily assembled and

dismantled.

Global Truss was in act ion again at the BMW Expo in Taiwan last September, with assistance from Global Truss’s Taiwanese distr ibutor, Starship Engineer ing.

Devot ing i ts t ime to r igging and trussing, StarShip Engineer ing was approached by BMW in Taiwan for a second t ime to design and construct i ts showcase for the new BMW 7 ser ies, BMW 3 ser ies, the i8 Plug-In Hybr id Sportscar, as wel l many other automobi le models.

Starship came up with i ts unique design for the largest t russ roof ever constructed, using F104 trusses in combinat ion with F52 trusses, to create a incredible 42 metres of f ree span and a 60 metre-long roof that was suspended from layer scaffo ld ing, using a tota l of 36 ProLyft hoists.

The roof can be easi ly conf igured into smal ler s izes, beside the specia l corners, which connect the F104 and F52 trusses together. Other parts are standard pieces. Therefore, by taking these specia l corners away in parts, the constructor can create a truss roof with any width measurement.

The roof structure attracted much attent ion and has lef t many contractors impressed enough to approach Starship for future events in Taiwan!

The compact and high-performance K24 HiMid System is suitable for all sound applications requiring fast setup, high

power reserves and excellent sound quality. The 2 x 12”/1.4” combination weighs just 32 KG, including the integrated flying hardware, which enables it to be hung for

longer line arrays. The optional flying bracket is easy to attach (using a ball lock pin) and can be adjusted to the desired angle. For operation with amplifier channels, the system is also available in a XOV version, with integrated

x-over and passive/active switchover.

The technical performance features of the K24 and its exceptional compactness were only possible by means of a complex acoustic interplay of the individual components and

their control systems. The K24 performs well not only as the basic version, but it also impresses when upgraded as

desired to a larger system for halls and open-air events.

The db100 Long-Throw Sound System is mainly constructed by a sound engine monomer, which includes an amplifier

module and a playback module. It is waterproof, dust-proof (IP45), and drop-resistant. The system adopts an ultra

long-throw sound engine technology, which unlike ordinary speakers, plays sound in a spherical form, eventually

reducing sound intensity rapidly in a distance. Therefore, the sound can be focused towards a certain direction to achieve

long-throw transmission, while keeping sufficient sound intensity and achieving a long-throw voice transmission,

alert and warning. One db100 unit can effectively transmit sound up to 1 kilometre away, and a group of six units can

effectively transmit sound up to 3 kilometres.

Pioneer DJ has announced the creation of “Platinum Editions” of the CDJ-2000nexus professional multi-player, DJM-900nexus performance digital mixer, and RMX-1000 Remix Station. The system includes two CDJ-2000nexus-M, one DJM-900nexus-M, and one Platinum Edition RMX-1000-M. The limited Platinum Edition series products will feature an ultra-sleek mirror chrome finish, each with a distinctive plaque engraved with the production run and serial number to

indicate its authenticity. In addition, included with each CDJ-2000nexus-M Platinum Edition will be one Pioneer premium

digital cable (DAS-DGC020R). The Pioneer DJ gear is suitable for excellent sound production in clubs, studios, mobile rigs

The new 15-inch PRX415M-WH and 12-inch PRX412M-WH passive portable loudspeakers offers the same performance and capabilities as the

The PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH can be used as either floor monitors or for overhead suspension. The Neutrik® SpeakON combination

The new and innovative wireless LSP 500 PRO loudspeaker eliminates the need for time-consuming cable layouts, and runs with an LSP 500 PRO app by Sennheiser, which

enables up to 20 loudspeakers to be remotely controlled at the same time, essentially taking over the functions of a mixing console. Configurations can be set either for

individual speakers or for groups of speakers, as well as for the audio sources connected to them.

Each loudspeaker can take up to three receivers for wireless microphones, and each also has a combined socket for a 6.3 mm jack plug and an XLR-3 connector for wired microphones. The highly versatile loudspeaker is compatible with microphones from

Sennheiser’s evolution wireless 100, 300 and 500 series.

The built-in music player in the LSP 500 PRO enables music to be played directly from an external device via the additional USB connector or the Bluetooth interface. The music player also has a convenient recording function directly to a USB device. Also equipped with AUX input/outputs, the loudspeaker has room for two rechargeable batteries, but

uses only one at a time for up to seven hours.

The TCX-8 is a compact passive two-way loudspeaker consisting of an 8” low frequency driver and a 1” high frequency compression driver on a Converging Elliptical Waveguide™ in a trapezoidal

enclosure. When permanently installed, the trapezoidal cabinet presents a discreet appearance with no visible side handles. As for portable applications, the pole mount-blanking plug can be removed for use with speaker stands and poles, and a single carrying handle is provided for transportation.

The TCX-8 features a Converging Elliptical Waveguide™, generating a smooth wave front, while giving excellent pattern control. The waveguide is rotatable through 90°, allowing a swap of the

horizontal and vertical dispersion patterns.

The cabinet includes internal threaded rigging points for use with Turbosound wall and ceiling brackets, and OmniMount™ loudspeaker brackets. It is finished as standard in black textured

paint (or optional white), and a rear connector panel provides two Speakon NL4 connectors wired in parallel with a 4-way barrier strip connector. When used with optional Turbosound Loudspeaker Management Systems, TCX loudspeakers can be controlled and monitored over a BVNet network

using TurboDrive™ control software.
