• What is the vision?Paulo Bertholdi, DG JRC, Institute for Energy, European Commission;“aim is to inform and stimulate Data Centre operators to reduce energy consumption in a cost effective manner without hampering the critical function”

• What is the objective?Demonstrate, through voluntary commitment, that the data centre industry is not a wasteful with energy. Ensure ICT remains a key enabler of environmental impact reduction

• How am I affected in the ICT industry?In Europe – Data Centre energy use is forecasted to rise from 56TWh/PA in 2007, to 104TWh/PA in 2020. Data Centres can be a room of any size; server rooms to dedicated buildings. Vendors, data centre operators, end user organisations and professional bodies/organisations all need to have awareness and choice of greener, efficient solutions and practices to reduce energy consumption

Introduction to EU Code of Conduct (CoC)

• Sign up to the code as a Participant or Endorser;

Participant; Data Centre owners and operators

Endorser; Vendors, consultants and industry professionals

• Abide by the commitments of the CoC;

Maximise the efficiency of data centres – including devices consuming electricity such asenterprise servers, ICT equipment, cooling equipment and power equipment

Ensure carbon emissions and other impacts such as strain on infrastructure associatedWith increases in energy consumption are mitigated

• Participants set targets and implement efficient energy strategies within an indicative timeline, reporting back to the EU

• Endorsers develop products, solutions and programs to enable participants to meet the CoC targets

How does the EU CoC on Data Centres work?

Who can help the Data Centre managers?• Data Centre Managers should ensure they are measuring their energy use, EU CoC

metrics include;

Data Centre infrastructure Energy (DCiE)Total Energy Productivity (under development for future versions of the CoC)IT Productivity Metric (under development for future versions of the CoC)

• Check with utility suppliers, data centre operators and IT system integrators about services and support

• Conduct an Energy Efficiency audit;

Power & coolingTemperature and relative humidity (T&RH)Improve efficiency (for capital and operating expenditure reasons and Green ICT)

• Speak to Connectix Cabling Systems for details of our recommended Audit Experts or Consultants currently working within major Data Centres worldwide
