Are there legal requirements?

• Standards are not necessarily law• Contracts are law

• Be careful what you sign up to!• It is impossible to comply with ISO EN & TIA standards at the same

time• What would reasonably be expected

• Start with National Standards• i.e. BS EN

Which should I use?

• Always refer to the UK & EN series (BS EN)• Cable Type – BS6701: 2017• Design – EN 50173 series• Installation O&M – BS6701• Admin, Spaces, Pathways, Pathway systems – EN 50174

series• Installation – EN 50174 series• Functional Bonding – EN 50174 series & EN 50310• Testing – EN 50173 series

*Always Specify Component Compliant Solutions to ISO 11801*Always ask for 3rd Party Certification

New European Standard – Data Centres

• EN 50600 Series• Holistic approach

• Bringing in all disciplines• No one discipline can do it all

EN 50600

• Data centre facilities an infrastructure• Part 1 – General concepts• Part 2.1 – Building construction• Part 2.2 – Power supply and distribution• Part 2.3 – Environmental control• Part 2.4 – Telecommunications cabling• Part 2.5 – Security systems• Part 2.6 – Management and operational information

Classes, Categories and Constructions

Application Classes

• The ISO and EN Standards use Application Classes for the definition of Channels & Links:

• Class C 16 MHz• Class D 100 MHz• Class E 250 MHz• Class EA 500 MHz• Class F 600 MHz• Class FA 1 GHz

EIA/TIA Categories of Cabling

• Category 3 10 MHz• Category 4 20 MHz• Category 5 100 MHz• Category 5e 100 MHz • Category 6 250 MHz• Category 6a 500 MHz• Category 7 N/A• Category 7a N/A

Cable Types

The Impact of Construction Product Regulations (CPR)

Construction Product Regulations 2017

• Implemented in 2013 under the EU Construction Products Directive• Based around Fire Performance• Certified to EuroClass Standards• Results in the use of CE Mark on Data Cables• Governed within EN50575• EN50575 Harmonised in July 2016 – mandatory in July 2017• Independent Tests Required within the EU by a “Notified Body”

approved by the country of issue and adopted by the country standards body

• Standard now BS EN 50575: 2014 + A1: 2016 • Adopted by BS6701 as a minimum performance Standard

What is a Construction Product?“Any product or kit which is produced and placed on the market for incorporation in a permanent manner in construction works or parts thereof and the performance of which has an effect on the performance of the construction works with respect to the basic requirements for construction works”

For example:

Cable Fire testing Methodologies

Two methodologies in terms of flame spread over time:

IEC 60332-1-2:A calibrated “Bunsen burner” type flame is applied (1kW) to a single cable sample for a duration dependent on the cable diameter (1-4 minutes). Once the burner is removed, the sample should self extinguish. If the char length is less than 425mm, the sample meets the requirements

IEC 60332-3:A calibrated flame is applied (20kW) to a cable array on a ladder representative of a building riser. Volumes of combustible material from 7l/m to 0.5l/m are attached to the ladder, and the flame is applied for either 20 or 40 minutes (dependent on category of performance).

Flame spread of less than 2.5m are deemed to meet the requirements.

Cable Fire testing Methodologies

Additional requirements to assess the performance of cable in the event of fire for evacuation purposes:

IEC 60754:Material samples are incinerated in a tube furnace, and the effluent gases are analysed for HCl or pH and conductivity. This determines the level of acidic effluent evolved from a prescribed amount of material. There are limits that the materials need to meet to be considered Halogen free.

IEC 61034:A cable specimen is burnt in a closed 3m3 chamber using an alcohol flame. The reduction in light transmittance due to the the resulting smoke is measured optically. There are certain limits defined in cable design specifications that are required to be met for the cables to be considered low smoke.

Cable Fire testing MethodologiesEuroclass Classification

Performance is based on a test SIMILAR to BS EN 60332-3 BUT:

Different Array (Based on diameter of cable)

Calorimetry/smoke detection equipment in Analysis section of extraction hood/ductAdditional measurements:

Total Heat Release (MJ)

Rate of Heat Release (kW)FIGRA (Fire Growth Rate Index W/s

Euroclass is derived from this along with char height for Classes B1-D, with BS EN 60332-1 (Bunsen Burner) for class E. Class F is a Failure to meet class E requirements.

Cable Fire testing Methodologies – Specific Parameters

Euroclass Classification

Total Heat Release (MJ):The total heat evolved which is attributable to the cable. The energy evolved (MJ) once the burner has been subtracted.

Rate of Heat Release (kW):The rate that the burning cable evolves heat energy.

FIGRA (Fire Growth Rate- Ws-1)The rate at which the cable fire grows.

Additional classifications:Smoke DropletsAcidityEach of the 3 additional classifications has 3 levels of performance

Euroclass Standards – What are they?• Classified as Performance in reaction to fire• Aca to Fca Euroclass Standards• Aca highest performance• Fca defined as performance determined

CPR, BS6701: 2017 and BS7671 18th Edition 2018 - What does it actually mean?

• Cable Construction to be based around Fire Performance• Mandatory Certification to EuroClass Standards• ALL cables should be CE Approved and marked• BS6701 Mandate to a minimum Euroclass Cca from 30th November 2017• All specification documents should be amended to comply with BS6701

asap• Euroclass Selection is the responsibility of the Client or the Designer• Establish this pre Stage 3

Construction Product Regulations 2017

• All Manufacturers are now required to publish a Declaration of Performance

Construction Product Regulations 2017

• All Product shipped after July 1st 2017 has to show CE Certofocation on the Packaging

The Impact of CAT6A on Containment

• Impact on Bend Radii• Do the maths!

• 8 times OD during installation, 4 times OD when installed(under tension and relaxed)

• Over to 64mm when pulling in and 32mm when installed• Double check the claims of the containment manufacturers – they need to

fit!

Containment

• If in doubt, use the containment calculator.

www.CCS-networking.com/containmentcalculator

The Impact of CAT6A

Part 1 of BS/EN 50174 states The Design of the termination points SHALL:• Allow safe access• Ensure link performance (Keep MBR)• Have adequate clearance to install components in accordance with

cable manufacturer’s instructions.

How to get it Wrong
