From the Principal

Well the time has come for me to write my last newsletter column at William Light R-12 School. As you would be aware, I am leaving the school at the end of Term 2 and retiring from DECD in October, following knee surgery in Term 3. Linda Richardson has been appointed as Principal for Terms 3 and 4 2015 and the position of Principal will be advertised later in the year to commence a long term appointment from January 2016. I know that the school community will warmly welcome Linda to the school and the role. We have met and communicated on several occasions in recent weeks and she is excited to be joining William Light School. Other changes to staff have also occurred recently. Greg Warnes has recently been seconded to work in DECD central office until the end of Term 3 so there have been some staff rearrangements as a result. Jason Dohse has taken up the position as Director of Secondary Education in Greg’s absence and Rod Grant has taken on the Senior Leader School Operations role in Jason’s place. A new teacher, Ms Callan Gault has been appointed and will be teaching Year 8 Geography and English and Year 11 RBL. I take many memories of my 11 years at William Light School. I believe that R-12 schools are very special places where staff are privileged to be able to watch young children starting school grow into young adults, leave

school and join the wider world of work. It is even more special when they keep in touch and we know of their achievements after they leave school. As I reflect on the students I have interacted with, counselled and supported to deal with life’s challenges I am reminded of the individual personalities, challenges and wide range of issues that occur for young people. As teachers, we don’t have all the answers but work with individuals and do our best to resolve issues in a productive way. William Light School will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always be an advocate for the school in the wider community. I greatly appreciate the work done by staff over the years to support students to learn and achieve their potential, be healthy both physically and mentally and contribute positively to the school and the wider community. The successful education of students is a partnership between schools and families and I thank the parents, carers and family members, who have worked with us to resolve issues, deal with the challenges presented and celebrate achievements. My experiences at William Light School have helped me learn about the many cultures represented in our culturally rich community and to understand the issues faced by individuals and families who have come to our country for a better life. Their decision to leave their families and communities in order to provide greater opportunities for their children and family as a whole is to be admired.

Having lived overseas for a period of time on two occasions I understand the difficulties and challenges faced, and my experiences were in English speaking countries where I could be easily understood! As a beginning teacher many years ago, I could never have imagined that I would be a Principal of a school, let alone plan to retire! However, as we mature, have a wide range of experiences and take up opportunities as they are offered, pathways emerge. I have enjoyed and am proud of my years contributing to the South Australian public education system in many different roles – as a teacher and leader in different school and bureaucratic settings. However, it is now time to have some new and different experiences. I look forward to the future and am still open to opportunities that will enable me to continue to contribute to education and the wider community and society for many years to come. Thank you again to all members of the William Light R-12 School community for working with us to create a wonderful school that cares and provides for everyone. It is a constant source of frustration that so many people don’t know we exist so please let everyone know about William Light School so the school can grow and do even more great things for the students in the future. I look forward to hearing of future developments and initiatives generated by William Light School. I will be forever proud of our achievements over the years and of those to come! Kind Regards and best wishes to all! Michele Pope

It is preferable that all private appointments for students, including medical appointments, are made outside of school hours to minimise disruption to Students and their classes. If an appointment needs to be made within school hours, a signed note from the parent/caregiver needs to be written in the diary to enable the student to be signed out.

Parents collecting students

during the day are required to sign the student out at the School Office. A note in the student’s diary will enable the student to be met at the School Office at the pre-arranged time.

MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS/CAREGIVERS You may have seen or heard recently on the television, in Social Media or in the newspapers, that there are many viruses affecting people within the community, making them seek treatment in local hospitals and with local doctors. As a School Community we care about our students and their families – therefore we thought that now was a good time to remind us all of some of the strategies that we can use to KEEP OURSELVES HEALTHY and to STOP THE SPREAD OF GERMS. We would also like to take this opportunity to remind our families that in order to STOP the spread of illness within our school community, William Light School’s expectation is that parents will keep students at home if unwell and seek medical treatment if required.

How to wash hands Use the following method to make sure your hands and the children’s hands are as germ free as possible. The process of thoroughly washing and rinsing your hands should take 10 – 15 seconds. This can be achieved by slowly counting to 10 when you wash and then slowly counting to 10 when you rinse. This is about as long as it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice. • Wet hands with running water. • Use liquid soap and spread over hands. • Rub your hands vigorously as you wash them. • Wash your hands all over. Pay particular attention to wash the palms and backs of hands, in between fingers, under finger nails and around wrists. • Rinse your hands thoroughly to remove all suds and germs. Thorough rinsing will help prevent Dermatitis from suds. • Turn off the tap using paper towel. • Pat dry your hands with a new paper towel. (Taken from Staying Healthy in Child Care- 4th edition)

Wishing all of our families and

students good health

STEM

Throughout the year UniSA is hosting activities based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, hence the name STEM. This enables us to explore different areas of the university to see which one we are most interested in pursuing for our future careers. Along with other schools, we travel to the Mawson Lakes Campus and use their facilities to participate in various problem solving activities. This hands on experience not only teaches us, but puts our learning into action in practical ways. For our first session in Term 1, we took a tour around the university,

seeing lectures and classes in session and the facilities that would be available if we continued on to the Mawson Lakes Campus in our future studies. We also got involved in activities to get to know all the other students from other schools. We conducted activities in sensor technology involving infrared light. We learnt how scientists can detect and identify objects based on how much infrared light can penetrate through various objects.

This term we learned how satellites enable GPS devices to work and how GPS technology is used to create incredibly accurate maps. We used GPS devices to locate hidden objects scattered throughout the campus. This is done on a worldwide basis in an activity known as ‘geocaching’. We also visited the planetarium which gave us an incredible view of the night sky. We learned how all early navigation was done by the stars, well before GPS was around. We also learned a lot about the movement of the planets in the solar system. Our next STEM activities will involve making an app for an android phone, and programming a 3D printer. Knockout Volleyball Year 10 Knockout Volleyball In week 7 of this term both the boys and girls year 10 volleyball teams went to Marion Leisure Centre for the qualifying round of the state-wide knockout competition against other schools.

Girls A very keen and energetic group of 10 girls from Year 9 and 10 represented William Light with great spirit and effort. Unfortunately the competition was strong and our shorter team faced some very tall opponents. The team worked well together and stayed on task all day to end up losing the playoff for third - 2 sets to 1. Jamie Carrico and Emily Schinella lead the team well all day. With the enthusiasm and team work this group should improve well over the next couple of years.

Boys A reasonably experienced group of 7 students with some height and power had hopes of pushing for the win. This was backed up by winning the first 2 matches against Seaview and Millicent. A fantastic match against Concordia went down to the wire with us just losing in what was some of the most entertaining volleyball that has been played in a William Light top. The final game against Adelaide who eventually won the whole day was a one sided affair, but the boys went down swinging and showed huge improvement over the day. Ilian Savinovic was a standout and easily in the top 3 power hitters in the competition. He was supported beautifully by Edward and Peter Nangle who show great promise. Richard Gabb Teacher

SPORTS DAY RECOUNTS FROM

THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

On Tuesday the 24th of March our school had sports day. I had lots of fun and I only got one ribbon. My favourite two were the baton relay and the fireman’s mat. I liked the baton relay because it was a lot of fun and I loved it. I liked the fireman’s mat because it was fun and we got to be thrown up into the air. We had to sit on a blue dot in the middle of the mat. The people on the outside had to hold their arms straight and put 1 leg in-front of the other leg and we had to bend our knees. Sports day was lots of fun.

MY FUN SPORTS DAY

On Tuesday the 24th of March our school had a fun sports day. First we did the R-12 relay and it was super fun but we came second. After that we did the health hustle which was so fun and awesome. After break 1 we played my favourites which were the fireman’s mat and the parachute. The last but not least that I will talk about was my all-time favourite, which was Ernie the earth ball. We played poison ball and it was super fun. For the fireman’s mat we took turns and when it was my go I went so high and it was super fun and so cool. So what we did next is the parachute it was super fun because we got to play cats and mouse. I only played as the mouse which it was good and fun. Therese Year 3

MATHS HELP Students who would like to have extra help with their Maths can go to the IWB area of the Resource Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays during break two. Nisha Pramod is available at this time to provide help and advice. Students are encouraged to make use of this valuable assistance. Thanks to Nisha for offering her time and expertise.

The West Adelaide Football Clinic

Yesterday 3rd June 2015 our class had a football clinic. We walked over to the oval after Chinese and we sat down and met Tommy who explained what we had to do for each activity. He put us into groups and we started. The first activity my group did was the tackle bag which looked fun before I even tried it because you practically had to knock it down. Faye and I kept on thumping it and it was really fun and cool at the same time. The next activity we did was the Specky and that one looked fun too and was fun. It had two steps, Tommy stood behind it with the ball and we had to jump up to get the ball. It was heaps of fun. The next activity was the handball target. Mrs Pretty held it up and we had to handball it into the hole. If it didn’t go in the hole there are numbers you might get to score some points so we all scored some points.

The Crows Visit On Friday 27th of March Nigel and the Crows came to our school. Claude the mascot also came. First we went to the Multimedia room to watch a presentation. They taught us about how to be healthy and being active. First they put a video on about the benefits of being and said that we should do 60 mins of exercise every day. At the end Nigel asked questions and gave out Prizes but I didn’t get one. The next video was about eating healthy, more people got prizes but I STILL didn’t get one. We learned that: Good food and water helps you concentrate on school work and do well, it also boosts your immune system and exercise is good for your heart and lungs and you meet new people and learn new skills and have lots of FUN! At the end we all got stickers and a booklet so I was satisfied that I got something after all. Faye Johnston Year 4.

The Crows Recount On Friday the 27th of March we went to the Multi Media room and Nigel and the crows did a presentation and then we went back to our classes.

At Recess we went to play and I played with Navdeep and we played in the middle playground and we were tired.

After the bell rang our class and the year 4/5 class met at the oval and the crows were there.

We did activities that were fun such as; tackle the punching bag, catch and handball the ball, kick the footy and get the target but we missed so we had to do five push ups. I thought it was great, I had lots of fun and so did my friends. I had great fun. My favourite thing was the bit where you have to hit the tackle bag, catch and handball the ball to the Crows player. Mark Su Year 4

The Crows Visit On the 27th of March, Nigel and the crows came to our school we went to the Multi Media room for a presentation. We learnt how much water to drink a day and we learnt that we have to eat vegetables and a lot of meat and dairy products. After recess we went to the oval to do a footy clinic. First we learnt every one’s names and the activities that we did were tackling the punching bag, we learnt how to kick a ball and then we did some relays with the balls. In the Multi Media room if we were good or if we got a question right, we got a prize. Claude the mascot came and he had a dance off with Alex and Alex won. Jasmin Year 4
