Term 3 Professional Development For staff to keep abreast of the latest technological advances in education, this term’s professional development program revolves around digital learning. On Monday’s Pupil Free Day staff participated in a full day ICT workshop that developed their understanding of new digital tools that promotes collaboration and engagement in the classroom. Selena Woodward, a lecturer from Flinders University worked with us to explore several innovative programs that can be used across the curriculum. A huge thank you to Andrew Charlton, our STEM Co-ordinator for organising this successful day. Feedback was very positive and staff will be implementing their new learning into their daily practice. Grounds and Facilities We have had a number of meetings with the architects to plan the next stage of our building project, which will include a new performing arts centre and an upgrade to secondary classrooms. Building will be starting early next year. During the last holidays, new interactive screens were installed in the upper level classrooms and the secondary toilet floors were replaced and work will continue on these later this term. Metro Canteens have moved in and Miriam, the new Canteen Manager has been busy preparing a range of delicious new food options. Student Achievements Congratulations to the Year 6 students who received “Exceptional Student Awards” in the Numerical Acumen Challenge, and to the Year 11 students who received outstanding grades in their SACE Research Project results. The Research Project is a SACE Stage 2 compulsory subject and it is pleasing to see that 38.5% of students achieved a B+ compared to state total of 15.1%. Congratulations also to the three students who are receiving A grades! In the sporting area, our students have also had some fabulous results. Congratulations to the Volleyball team who have collected their fourth trophy in the interschool competition. Well done everyone involved and I would like to thank their teachers for their hard work and encouragement. Research Project Success! Congratulations to all Year 11s who completed their Research Project in Semester 1. The SACE Board released final grades early this term, confirming 100% completion for the second year in a row – a fantas-tic result! Special congratulations to the following students who achieved As: Kathe Magparangalan (with an A+ for Assessment Task 1: Folio) Research Question: Would our future technology be able to successfully implement human head trans-plants? Vaibhav Aggarwal Research Question: How do black holes come into existence and are they a threat to the universe? Mehriza Khokhar Research Question: How does sedentary lifestyle effect professionals in an office environment? It was also exciting to see many more students achieve a B+, putting our percentage of students in this grade band (38.5%) well above the state total (15.1%). Other topics researched this year included:
False confessions Endometriosis Mental health and stigma Reducing paper waste in our college Artificial intelligence
Miss Woonton & Mr Copeland Research Project Teachers Bilingual News Our Year 3 and Dance Club students have been learning Chinese Dance. Our Year 3 students had opportunities to learn geography and have cultural experiences in an a uthentic Chinese environment (music, props and language). Through dance and music, students were able to acquire and memorise specific Chinese terms. Now we know and create:
The third longest river in the world is the Yangtze River (长江)
The sixth longest river in the world is the Yellow River (黄河)
In the Dance program, there is an increase in student engagement and acquire basic movements. Our students had an enjoyable time with Chinese fans, "We don't like to dance, we love it". Xiang Li Primary Teacher STEM News All Year 10 students were offered the opportunity to be involved in the University of South Australia High-Level STEM activities held on Uni SA Campus. Leyla, Mahum, Trisha and Samantha attended the Uni SA Mawson Lakes campus to undertake Electronic Games construction. Our students were joined by Year 10 students from 8 different schools in our Western area. It was a fantastic opportunity to spend a day learning in a University setting on tasks that interest their desire to be engaged in STEM careers in their future. Andrew Charlton

Volleyball Carnival How good was the Western Zone Volleyball Carnival? 3 teams travelled to Mars Stadium for a day of volleyball. One team in junior and 2 in senior. The Junior team made up of year 9s played good team volleyball all through the minor rounds, losing only one game to the top team Mt Carmel. Consistent serving and solid passing were the backbone of their success. They met Mt Carmel in the final for the trophy. In an enthralling game where scores were close all game it finished at 48 points each at full time. The game continued till one team was 2 points up and we stood tall and played well when it mattered winning 50-48. Congratulations to Tarik, Nalani, Natthorn, Kevin, Kye, Malcolm, Sam, and Jaymie. Big thanks to Tyson for umpiring all day and doing a quality job. We had a team of year 10s playing in the senior division with the hopes of gaining experience for next year. This team exceeded expectations by winning many games against older opposition and qualifying for the 3rd vs 4th playoff game. Ina quality final they had a close victory to secure 3rd position overall. The other senior team was made up of year 11s and 12s and were hoping to be at the pointy end at the completion of the minor round. Things went to plan winning all but one of the minor round games and like the juniors were up against the top ranked team in Mt Carmel for the final. Things began poorly with the conservative play resulting in an early 15-8 deficit. After a time out and a new plan to be brave and take some chances things began to turn around and a tight contest developed. Scores were tied with a couple of minutes left, but some good serving and power hitting off solid passing gave us the win by 4 points. Congratulations to Dan, Bayley, Ashlee, Kurt, Matviy, Jaival and Nick. Richard Gabb Secondary Teacher

Student Reflections A Trip to the Australian Maritime College The 2019 Maritime Engineering Trip to Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania took place from June 24 to June 26. 14 students from all over Adelaide were accompanied by 3 teachers to the University of Tasmania on a 3-day trip. The trip was spent on the college campus experiencing a range of maritime activities in engineering and seafaring. This experience was supported by the Maritime School of South Australia with the intention to give students with a maritime interest an insight into alternate pathways that are offered in maritime sectors. On the 24th of June, students were expected to arrive at the Launceston airport by 2:15 pm. However, due to a 3-hour delay in the flight timings, we reached Tasmania around 5:00 pm. Upon reaching the airport, the students were immediately taken to the University of Tasmania campus and given their accommodations. The students were then welcomed by the staff of the University who conducted a brief meeting explaining the courses and pathways for Maritime Engineering and Crew workhands. The delay caused the students to be unable to experience some of the activities designed for the first day. However, we used the day as an opportunity to explore the campus and utilise the common room for university students to play indoor sports like table tennis and billiards.
The next day, we met at the reception at 8:00 am and departed for a Bell Bay Fire Ground activity hosted by Phil Lenthall and Phil Mackrill. The activity was an information meeting for students that explained the types of fires and their threats on a ship. It also explained how to deal with the different types of fires using different types of equipment. Students experienced the use of fire blankets, fire extinguishers and fire hoses during a practical under the observation of supervisors and teachers. The activity lasted till 12:00 pm after which students returned to the college campus for a sea survival activity. The sea survival activity was hosted by Phil Lenthall and Stephen Hurd during which students were made familiar with the different types of survival equipment used in oceans in the case of an emergency. Different suits similar with the purpose of a life jacket were introduced to students and were given the opportunity to use them. The functioning of various equipment’s carried by a life raft was explained to students as well. Students even got the opportunity to explore a life raft and use some of the equipment it contained. The activity ended at 4:30 pm after which students returned to their accommodation and spent the rest of the day exploring the campus.
The last day was the most exciting for all of the students. We checked out of our accommodations at 8:30 am and headed to the visit some of the AMC’s world class facilities which involved towing tank, main bridge simulator, cavitation tunnel and AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). We also took part in some other activities like making pasta and marshmallow structures. At 11:00 am, we departed for Cataract George, a beautiful Public park with a chair lift, hiking trails and landscaped gardens as well as a cafe and restaurant. It was a breathtaking natural landscape and one of the most beautiful places the students ever saw. After exploring the natural wonder, we departed for the airport at 1:30 pm. The whole trip was wonderful as we not only got to see the University campus and explore their courses, but also view the natural beauty of the city. The trip was an unforgettable experience for me that gave me an in-depth knowledge about the pathways and jobs in the maritime sector of Australia. Vaibhav Aggarwal Student, Year 11A
