From the Principal

W elcome back to the 2016 school year! It is great to report that the year has started off smoothly and a real focus on learning has commenced

across the school. As you can see from the Calendar, we have a busy term ahead and I am confident that there will be many student achievements and successes.

Staffing Update A warm welcome to new staff members Erik Ma (Primary and Chinese Teacher), Paul Bates (Primary and Second-ary SSO), and welcome back Di Whitaker-Lockwood (Reception/Year 1 Teacher). Congratulations to Kylie Tuckey who has stepped up as Assistant Principal (R -6) whilst Michelle Hocking is on leave. Garry Gulliver is backfilling Kylie as Student Wellbeing Co-ordinator.

Class Configurations Below is the list of class configurations for 2016. As you can see we are able to have straight Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 classes for the first time. The Year 7’s are now part of the Secondary School and they have settled in very well. They are enjoying the wide range of specialist

subjects that we can offer in a R – 12 school, including Home Economics, Tech Studies, Digital Technologies, Art & Craft.

Acquaintance Night We had a very successful Acquaintance Night on

Tuesday evening and would like to thank parents who gave up their time to meet the staff. If you were unable to attend and would like more information from class or homegroup teachers, please feel free to contact them via email or school office.

Student Behaviour Management Review During last year we requested feedback via the Parent Feedback Sheets and the Client and Student Opinion

Survey. Overall, comments were positive however, one area that required attention was consistency and clarity around behaviour management. Parents and students were interviewed to have input into the School Behaviour Policy and procedures. During the week prior to

students returning to school, staff took part in training with DECD Behaviour coach Jenn Trantor who helped us

review our current practice and define what was working and what needed to change.

We believe that positive relationships are the key to successful learning and we have developed a step by step approach in dealing with any issues. Attached is the flow chart to assist families with positive behaviours. The old ‘Focus Room’ has been disbanded and instead

students are asked to accompany teachers at yard duty to discuss strategies. This will avoid students from missing out on valuable learning time. Parents will be informed via a note in the diary or a telephone call.

For the more serious incidents, students may be asked to attend Extended Day Support Time after school in the

Resource Centre with the Leadership staff to develop a behaviour plan. Of course, if students have work

commitments, parents can request a lunchtime session instead. Homework Help will also be offered to students who are needing extra assistance.

We know that students learn best when they feel safe and secure. Pastoral care sessions, including Cyberbullying, Program Achieve and Mindmatters are now part of the timetable every week. Students are learning to interact successfully with others, develop their confidence, self esteem and positive study skills.

Once again, this year we are calling for parents to be

involved in school activities whether it be part of the

Governing Council, a sub committee or assist in the

classroom. I encourage you to attend our AGM on

Thursday 17th March at 7pm in the Resource Centre, to see how you can help in your son or daughter’s

education.

I am looking forward to working with families to ensure positive outcomes for all students during the year.

Linda Richardson

Information for Primary

Reception to Year 6 William Light School in 2016 has a new structure. The Primary component of William Light School is made up of Reception - Year 6 classes and the High School

component of the school is made up of Year 7- Year 12 classes - in line with much of the state. Reception - Year 6 students are bound by the same behaviour

expectations and rules to aid with consistency and

communication. At William Light School we strive for excellence and in doing so we realise that students need support to be the best version of themselves.

In the Primary area, Reception to Year 6 classes follow a framework called KIDSMATTER and a curriculum called Program Achieve. Both KIDSMATTER and Program Achieve are designed to be utilised as a School's ethos (daily mantra) that enables students to connect

meaningfully, believe in themselves and support their community as caring and positive members of society.

You can have a look at the program and framework online to see some of the things that we learn through these initiatives.

Please make sure that you try to get along to one of our assemblies during the year as we will be showing the audience how we strive to do our best and be our best through the above mentioned initiatives because KIDS really DO MATTER!

Play Areas and Hats

Reception – Year 6 students have 2 designated play areas – These are the Courtyard and Primary Oval

area.

Students need to wear hats in Term 1 and Term 4 of 2016 if they are Reception to Year 6 students.

AGM

The Governing Council AGM meeting is to be held in the Resource Centre from 7pm on the night of Thursday March 24th 2016. Come along to be involved in making important decisions for your child(ren)'s school

throughout 2016. If you would like more information on this please do not hesitate to contact either Linda or

Kylie.

OSHC OSHC (Out of School Hours Care) – You have received a hard copy of an OSHC survey. William Light School is gauging parent interest in having an OSHC service on site. Please fill in this survey even if you do not need/want to access this service for your child (ren) and return to your child(ren)'s teacher(s) by Friday 26th February 2016.

Breakfast Club is now back! The KICKSTART for KIDS organisation and William Light School are providing breakfast for students every day of the school week from 8:20am until 8:35am in the Learning Street Area of the Primary School. Breakfast items served are toast and spreads, cereals and milk, fruit and yoghurt. This program is available to all

students and has proven to provide students with a very positive start to the day.

Parent Volunteers We would love to hear from you if you could volunteer some time at school to listen to students read, to help fundraise for school improvements or to coach a small sport's team for Reception to Year 6 students. If you can help contact Kylie Tuckey at :

[email protected]

Thank you Thank you to all parents who came to meet and greet us in the Primary Learning Street on Acquaintance Night last week. It is great to meet all of our families and as teachers we always love a chance to discuss our 'craft' - teaching and learning. We look forward to many more opportunities throughout 2016 to get to know you and support your child(ren)'s learning experience here at

William Light School.

Being on time to school

Get into the right habit

Arriving late to school on a consistent basis can have

long-term academic effects. If showing up late to school becomes a habit, students may develop the notion that

tardiness is an acceptable behaviour. This belief can

negatively impact their future work ethic and employment opportunities. Alternatively, showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments. This habit can serve students well through tertiary studies and into their future careers.

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the

luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and

focusing their minds on the lessons to come. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus. This ultimately contributes to the lower grades associated with chronic tardiness.

Snow Trip Interest for 2016 “There is something magical about the snow”.

Deposits for the 2016 Snow Trip are Due Friday 4th

March

We offer the Year 10 and 11 students the opportunity to go on The Snow Trip. Year 12 PE students can also

participate in the trip if they use it as part of their course.

Anyone interested that does not have the paperwork

needs to see Mr Gabb ASAP

This is a week long trip to the Victorian Alps to learn to ski or snowboard. These trips are fantastic as students not only learn a new skill but experience a completely

different environment. These trips are “the best school experience ever” for most students.

Medical / Injury issues and school behaviour may restrict a student’s involvement. For those students that go, there will be regular lunchtime sessions during Term 2 and 3 in order to fully prepare for the trip. These will be a

combination of information and fitness, done at lunchtimes and some lesson time. These sessions will be compulsory.

2016 Expected Cost : $1380 per student

Tiffany Boyer Pastoral Care Worker

Hi everyone and a big welcome to all of you, especially those new to the school. I am the school's Pastoral Care Worker. My job is to serve the Mums, Dads, Carers,

Students and Staff at William Light R-12 School, by providing care and support. For some that may mean a sympathetic ear, sharing good news, or finding a way to assist families doing it tough.

For students, I am hear to listen, and help with any issues you might be facing. I got to meet most of our year 12's last week, during the Year 12 Seminar Day and had a great time doing some fun activities. I also enjoyed two very useful presentations, Called "Balance the Big Year" and "Identity Deconstructed", they were full of useful infor-mation, advice and tips for helping our seniors navigate this year.

Now a bit about me. This is my third year at William Light. Prior to this, I was taking care of my two beautiful children and family. Pre kids, I worked for the Youth Affairs

Council of South Australia (YACSA) the peak body in South Australia, representing the interests of young

people, youth workers and organisations throughout SA. I also have experience helping students with special needs, in youth work, supporting young offenders, and working in the law.

As you know William Light places a high priority on

student wellbeing, and I am here to support that. So, if I can help you or your family, let me know. Catch me at school Wednesday or Thursday:

Telephone: 8297 0488, be sure to leave a message if I am not in.

Email: [email protected] .

I would love to get to know more students and families here at William Light, so if you do have time, come to my office and introduce yourself to me ( I am located near the bridge in the senior school, my door has a smiley face on it). I am very friendly and approachable and would

welcome the opportunity for us to get to know each other, over a cuppa.

Year 9 English - Mr. Koutsogiorgos

Short Story By Aliza Khakhar

Found

Sarah and James are siblings. They are feeling

monotonous as there is nothing to do or play. Meanwhile Sarah is lying on the ground, James discovers an old board game behind the tree. He tells his sister to play this game. She agrees and they start playing. When it’s James’ turn he rolls the dice and here is what is written on the card he picked, “In the wizard’s castle you must wait, until the dice rolls five or eight”. After that James just

vanishes.

Sarah starts to panic and rolls the dice, but it doesn't work. There must be more than one person to play the game. She asks her friend and she agrees. They start playing. When it is Sarah’s turn, the card she picks says “you shall start the quest to save your brother or the wizard will

destroy all the others”. Same happens with her, she

vanishes. Her friend is so scared, that she runs away and leaves the game on the ground. When Sarah opens her eyes she sees a big maze and the castle is in the middle of it. She needs to find her brother in the twelve hours or else the evil wizard will destroy everything. She starts her journey. She is very puzzled because there is no way she can reach the middle of the maze. The path goes straight and as far as the eyes can see.

At the corner, she meets a troll who helps her. The

cunning wizard sees him and throws him in the dungeon. Poor troll and Sarah. Now Sarah is all alone. She has less time, but she is determined to find her brother and save other people. There on her way, she meets a dog who can

talk. She asks for his help and he tells her the way. Well, the wizard changes the maze and Sarah forgets the way. She gains courage and starts again. On her way she finds a big magical wand. She thinks and wishes that she is in the castle. With the help of the wand she destroys the

wizard and saves all the people. She also rescued her brother.

Well that is the end of her quest. When Sarah and James both open their eyes they see that they are in their home. They are so relieved and happy to be home, They dig the ground and hide the game so that nobody can ever play, as it was so dangerous. This was the story of Sarah, who tried her best and was determined to save her brother and she does.
