"Speak softly and tenderly to Jerusalem, but alsomake it very clear that she has served her sentence, that her sin is taken care of—forgiven. She'sbeen punished enough and more than enough, and now it's over and done with." Thunder in thedesert! "Prepare for God's arrival! Make the road straight and smooth, a highway fit for our God. Fillin the valleys, level off the hills, smooth out the ruts, clear out the rocks. Then God's bright glory willshine and everyone will see it.” Yes. Just as God has said.

Children’s Story.........................................................................................Victor BrownOrgan: — Theodore Dubois.......................................Jeanna Reuer, organ

Music: John Rutter....................................Church ChoirWhat sweeter music can we bring than a carol, for to sing the birth of this our heavenly King? Awake the voice!Awake the string! Dark and dull night, fly hence away, and give the honour to this day that sees December turnedto May. Why does the chilling winter’s morn smile like a field beset with corn? Or smell like a meadow newlyshorn, thus, on the sudden? Come and see the cause, why things thus fragrant be: ‘tis He is born, whosequickening birth gives life and luster, public mirth, to heaven, and the under-earth. We see Him come, and knowHim ours, who, with His sunshine and His showers, turns all the patient ground to flowers. The darling of theworld is come, and fit it is, we find a room to welcome Him. The nobler part of all the house is the heart, whichwe will give Him; and bequeath this holly and this holly ivy wreath, to do Him honor; who’s our King, and Lordof all this reveling. What sweeter music can we bring than a carol for to sing the birth of this our heavenly King? The birth of this our heavenly King.

Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor presents today’s sermon. Randy Daniel, a financialcounselor who works for Edward Jones Investments, hosts today’s worship. Victor Brown, dean forenrollment at Kettering College of Medical Arts, tells today’s children’s story. Nancy Small reads today’sscripture lesson. She was the head deaconess for many years before retirement. David Small, a retiredsurgeon and for many years the head elder of our congregation, presents the Prayers of the People. JerryTaylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist/choir director for today’s service.

As we gather for worship, Donald Huff directs the Praise Orchestra playing –a medley of the familiar Christmas Carols – and

arranged by Jeff Cranfill, the associate minister of music and Performing Art Center Dean at First BaptistChurch in Snellville, Georgia. The Advent Ringers, under the direction of Joan Ulloth Dorgan, play twoChristmas carols, and The Advent Ringers will be featuredtomorrow evening at the Bach Society of Dayton Concert here at 7:30 p.m. (this is a ticketed event).

is a 9th-century Latin carol. Immanuel or Emmanuel or Imanu'el (Hebrew”.translates "God is with us (לאונמע

(Hymn No. 204) is a Charles Wesley hymn written in 1744. It was firstpublished in a book of 18 poems, The tune, is one of the greatWelsh tunes and was arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

is a setting of Hymn No. 131 played by the Advent Ringers and Rob Turner, aflute-recorder specialist who taught at Indiana University, in Bloomington, IN. He has soloed with the BostonCamerata and the Indiana Baroque Orchestra. Currently he lives here with his mother, Margaret Turner.

comes from Michael W. Smith's album, and is arranged forchurch orchestra and bagpipes by Ronn Huff. Greg Martin, our guest piper, is an assistant professor ofLibrary Science at Cedarville University, the organist at the Centerville Community Church, a member of theMiami Valley Pipes and Drums. He teaches bagpipe lessons on Tuesdays at our church.

was composed by one of the great Paris, France organists of the late 1800’s, Theodore Dubois.Organist Jeanna Reuer graduates next weekend from the KCMA nursing program and returns to her homein Seattle. She began to study the organ two years ago with Jerry Taylor.

is one of the great new Christmas anthems by the English composer, John Rutter. Thiscarol is a setting of a poem written by Robert Herrick (1591-1674). The meaning of this text is not perceivedat casual glance. It is a poem that describes us bringing our very best to the service of Christ and giving himthe center place in our hearts, and thus all of our behaviors.

is a 12th-century French carol chosen to follow today’s sermon. At first it seems to bea silly children’s hymn until one realizes that the point is that all of God’s creation present themselves to JesusChrist to be his disciples.

is a setting of Hymn No. 137 in an arrangement for orchestra by Richard Kingsmore whois currently Music Associate at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he resides withhis wife Gina.

Next week: December 11, 2010Pastor Karl Haffner continues our Christmas sermon series

Christmas CompassionSecond message in series:

I. Unwrapping the Veneer of Christmas

II. Unwrapping the Veneer of Christians

(Luke 10:25-29 NIV) 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.“Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul andwith all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

(Luke 2:10. NIV) 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good newsthat will cause great joy for all the people.”

(Luke 10:1, NIV) 1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them twoby two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.

(Luke 10:30-37 NIV) 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem toJericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him andwent away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when hecame to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he trav-eled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went tohim and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his owndonkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denariiand gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reim-burse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the handsof robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Goand do likewise.”
