The Gospel of the PassionAccording to Mark 15: 1-39

Mark: As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation withthe elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. Pilate asked Him,

Pilate: Are you the King of the Jews?

Mark: Jesus answered him,

Jesus: You say so.

Mark: Then the chief priests accused Him of many things. Pilate asked Him again,

Pilate: Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.

Mark: But Jesus made no further reply so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom

they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels whohad committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and beganto ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them,

Pilate: Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?

Mark: For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again,

Pilate: Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call King of the Jews?

Mark: They shouted back,

Crowd: Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

Mark: Pilate asked them,

Pilate: Why, what evil has He done?

Mark: But they shouted all the more,

Crowd: Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

Mark: So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers led Him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole court. And they clothed Him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on Him. And they began saluting Him,

All Men: Hail, King of the Jews!

Page 6: Complete Bulletin 04-23-11

Mark: They struck His head with a reed, spat upon Him, and knelt down in homage to Him. After mocking Him, they stripped Him of the purple cloak and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.

They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry Hiscross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Then theybrought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). And they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. And theycrucified Him, and divided His clothes among them, casting lots to decidewhat each should take.

It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified Him. The inscriptionof the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ And with Him theycrucified two bandits, one on His right and one on His left. Those who passedby derided Him, shaking their heads and saying,

Crowd: Ah! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days.Save Yourself, and come down from the cross!

Mark: In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking Him among themselves and saying,

All Women: He saved others; He cannot save Himself. Let the Messiah, theKing of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may seeand believe.

Mark: Those who were crucified with Him also taunted Him.

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice,

Jesus: Eloi, lema sabachthani?

Mark: which means,

Jesus: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Mark: When some of the bystanders heard it, they said,

Crowd: Listen, He is calling for Elijah.

Mark: And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gaveit to Him to drink, saying,

Bystander: Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.

Mark: Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed His last. And the curtain of the templewas torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facingHim, saw that in this way He breathed His last, he said,

Centurian: Truly this man was God’s son.

(the congregation is invited to kneel in silence)

Final message in Series: “When I See the Cross...”I. Defying the Odds

A. Rulon Gardner B. Romans 8:11

“And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ fromthe dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you” (NIV). C. The point: Resurrection power is accessible to every person.

II. A Story: Dead Man Walking A. John 11, (NIV) (3) So they sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”... (5) Jesus loved Martha and hersister and Lazarus. (6) Yet when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was two more days. (7) Then He said to His disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” (8) “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet You are goingback there?”

(17) On His arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. (18)Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, (19) and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary tocomfort them in the loss of their brother. (20) When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out tomeet Him, but Mary stayed at home. (21) “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if You had been here, my brother would not have died. (22) ButI know that even now God will give You whatever You ask.” (23) Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” (24) Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” (25) Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, eventhough he dies; (26) and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (27) “Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to comeinto the world.”

(32) When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said,“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” (33) When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, Hewas deeply moved in spirit and troubled. (34) “Where have you laid him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. (35) Jesus wept.

(38) Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across theentrance. (39) “Take away the stone,” He said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he hasbeen there four day.” (40) Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell; you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” (41) So they took away the stone, Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank You that Youhave heard Me. (42) I knew that You always hear Me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standinghere, that they may believe that You sent Me.” (43) When He had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (44) The dead mancame out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them,“Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

B. John 12:10-11, (NIV) So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, (11) for on account of him many of the Jewswere going over to Jesus and putting their faith in Him.

III. A Final Story: The King has One More Move

Worship Notes:Participants: Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s Easter sermon. Elliot Smith, our pastorfor young adults and outreach ministries, hosts today’s service. Robert Peach, head of the ChristianCounseling Center, presents the Prayers of the People. Gail Hall is director of the Spring Valley AcademyChoirs. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist/choir director for today’s service.Dale Creech, a Dayton attorney, accompanies Patricia White Sexton’s new anthem.

The past week and particularly tomorrow, most of the Christians of the world remember Christ’s entranceinto Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Christ being brought before Pilate and Herod, the Crucifixion, and HisRESURRECTION on Sunday. The Scriptures report that Christ rested in the tomb on His Holy Sabbath. Today’sservice is designed to be much as it was 2000 years ago as Christ’s followers spent Sabbath going over theevents of the previous week and wondering what tomorrow would bring.

Elliot Smith leads us in reading the Gospel of Mark, chapter 15, verses 1-39. Eric Beaven, retired professorof speech, reads the part of Pilate. Randy Daniel, an elder and financial planner, reads the words of Jesus.Dan Stevens, our pastor for administration, reads the part of the Chief Priests. Ted Ramirez, our headelder and an attorney, reads the part of the Centurion.

Music: As we gather for worship, the sanctuary is dark and void of any decorations symbolizing life withoutChrist’s presence. The Choir sings a setting of the Passion Chorale, (Hymn No. 156)

This hymn is possibly the best known of the German Chorales. The text was probably written byBernard of Clairvaux, but set to music by Paul Gerhardt in 1656, using a tune everyone commonly knew.Elizabeth Wareham will play a setting of this hymn for violin by American composer, Ovid Young.

is a setting of Frederick Faber’s hymn by Melvin K. West, who is currently theorganist for the Sunnyside SDA Church in Portland, OR.

is a setting of Hymn No. 154 by Dayton resident, Gilbert Martin. The hymn was written in 1707 by Isaac Watts and it was adapted to a Gregorian Chant by Americancomposer, Lowell Mason.

is the final chorus from Patricia White Sexton’s new cantata, “Relentless Love,” thatpremiered here last night, and is not yet published.

from Handel’s “Messiah” is sung as the response to the message of hope in theresurrection. Tradition says that Handel endured criticism and abuse for composing the Yet, whenthe King of England heard it, he was so moved that he stood to his feet. This was a rare occurrence for musicand musicians. In honor of the text, congregations have continued to stand for over 300 years when the

is sung.

from “Symphony V” is perhaps the grandest and “showiest” of all the organ literature. It has beenplayed for over 100 years at Easter services and is often referred to as the “Easter Resurrection” piece. Forthis reason it is also played at memorial services and for many weddings.
