MEET YOUR DEDICATED CLAIMS DEPARTMENT!

Compass Rose Hosts 2nd Annual Blood Drive!

Sign Up to Receive the E-Compass!

According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. In total, that’s more than 38,000 blood donations that are needed every day!

On Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012, Compass Rose Benefits Group (CRBG) proudly joined the American Red Cross in their efforts to help save lives by hosting its 2nd Annual CRBG Blood Drive! Over 25 individuals voluntarily donated their time and blood to the American Red Cross. It is because of their selfless contributions that we were able to raise over 25 pints of blood, which can help save up to 75 lives!

On behalf of CRBG, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all of the individuals who voluntarily donated blood. To learn how you can help give the gift of life by hosting a blood drive in your community, visit www.redcross.org or call (800) 733-2767.

Every year, more than 90 million tons of paper and paperboard are used in the U.S. That’s more than 2 billion books, 350 million magazines, and 24 billion newspapers!

This year, in our continuing efforts to lead by example, you can now - for the first time - sign up to receive our tri-annually published Compass Connection Newsletter electronically! While the electronic Compass Connection, or E-Compass, will contain the same pertinent information that you have come to expect in each issue, signing up to receive the newsletter electronically will help reduce paper waste and your carbon footprint on our planet.

Too Much Fun In the Sun? Today, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 60,000 Americans were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin in 2008. Of those diagnosed, 8,623 lost their lives to skin cancer – 5,672 men and 2,951 women.

Major Risk FactorsUltraviolet (UV) radiation is thought to be the major risk factor for most skin cancers. Sunlight is the main source of UV radiation, which can damage the genes in your skin cells. Tanning lamps and booths are also sources of UV radiation. People with excessive exposure to UV radiation from these sources are at greater risk for developing skin cancer. Whether you are laying out poolside or planting flowers in your garden, you are at risk. According to the American Cancer Society, the people most at risk are:

• People with fair complexions, light or red hair or blue eyes • People who continually expose their skin to the sun are at risk for

non-melanoma skin cancer • People who occasionally expose their skin to the sun (for example, on

weekends) may be at risk for melanoma • People with many moles and/or irregular shaped moles are at risk for melanoma

• Those with family or personal history of skin cancer

Remember, while skin cancer may not be completely preventable, it can be curable when detected early. So this summer, show your body how much you care by avoiding tanning beds, applying SPF (30 or higher) before leaving your house, and checking abnormal spots on your body regularly. Don’t become a statistic – protect yourself!

EVERY HOURone person dies from melanoma.

Take it? Don’t Take It? We’ll Help You Decide.

For your reading pleasure, we have added a NEW section to our newsletter that features articles written by medical experts on current and hot-topics in today’s health care industry!

This month, we are excited to feature the following article written by Amy Steinkellner, who is the National Practice Leader for the ESI/Medco Women’s Therapeutic Resource Center. A passionate advocate for addressing the unique challenges facing women and families, she is a member of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, the North American Menopause Society, and the American Society for Health Systems Pharmacists. With more than 14 years of experience in clinical pharmacy benefit management, she is responsible for enhancing the practice of pharmacy care specifically for women.

Since the 2002 release of results from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), one of the nation’s largest studies in women’s health, the use of hormone therapy for the management of menopause symptoms has been under continued scrutiny - with women riding the roller coaster of “should I or should I not” use hormone therapy? Now ten years after the WHI we have learned much more about how the type of hormone therapy, when it is started, and how long it is used, can affect the risks and benefits of this approach to managing the symptoms of menopause.

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is an organization dedicated to “promoting the health and quality of life of all women during midlife and beyond through an understanding of menopause and healthy aging”. On March 1st, 2012, NAMS released an updated position statement on the use of hormone therapy, reaffirming that hormone therapy is still the most effective treatment of vasomotor symptoms and other symptoms of menopause but further defining how hormone therapy should be individualized.

Women’s health topics are certainly common in today’s popular magazines and TV talk shows. Every day, pharmacists have the opportunity to talk with women who have a broad range of understanding about hormone therapy (HT)… from the well informed to the misinformed. There are many areas or “pieces of the puzzle” to consider when it comes to deciding what is the best approach to managing the symptoms of menopause. So from a pharmacist’s perspective, just what are some pieces of the HT puzzle that every woman should know?

ASK THE EXPERT!

There is not a “one therapy for all” approach to HT. When a woman is prescribed HT, her physician must take into account many different things. The age she went through menopause, the symptoms she experiences, and her past medical history all play a role in determining appropriate therapy. Some of the benefits that have been attributed to use of HT include diminishing night sweats and hot flashes as well as osteoporosis prevention. Nonetheless, there are still many conflicting studies and opinions regarding the use of HT. Quite simply, each woman must be evaluated and treated individually.

Consider the various forms of HT. The various forms of HT available today include:• Oral pill• Patch, cream, gel or spray that can be applied to your skin• Cream, tablet, suppository or ring that can be used within the vagina

“Bioidentical” is not better, and may not be safe. Many women are interested in using “bioidentical hormones” for treatment of their menopausal symptoms. “Bioidentical” generally refers to hormones that are structurally identical to the “natural” hormones made by the ovary. Many women do not realize however that there are commercially available, bioidentical HT products that have been tested and approved by the US Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). There is no scientific evidence that non-FDA approved bioidentical HT products are safe and effective. Therefore, there is a potentially significant risk associated with the use of custom-compounded bioidentical HT formulations or preparations that are custom-mixed and packaged by a pharmacist based on a physician’s specifications. The purity, dose consistency, safety, and efficacy of these products have not been tested to prove that the active ingredients are absorbed appropriately or provide predictable levels in blood and tissue. In addition, safety information is often not provided when these prescriptions are dispensed.

HT therapy should be re-evaluated on a regular basis. Many women remember how they went through a great deal of discomfort while they tried to find the right dose or combination of medications to effectively treat their symptoms. As a result many women also remain on the same dose for years. The risks associated with HT - which include breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke - can increase with increasing age and duration of use; therefore, it is important that women continue to work with their physician to be certain that the lowest effective dose is used and for the shortest duration of time. There are alternatives to HT. For those women who are unable to take HT or prefer not to take HT, other options are available. Women who experience hot flashes can try wearing light, layered clothing and using portable fans. Weight loss can help overweight women because an increased body mass index can increase the risk for hot flashes. There are non-hormonal prescription alternatives that women may consider for the management of menopausal symptoms. For example, women who are primarily affected by night sweats and sleep disruption may benefit from talking to their physicians about short term use of a sleep medication. The incidence of thyroid disease also increases as women age; therefore, women should talk to their doctors about having their thyroid checked.

Long story short. HT has its place in therapy primarily for the alleviation of postmenopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. Pharmacists can help even the most “savvy” patient on some piece of the “HT puzzle.” The current recommendation is to have individualized treatment based on the women’s severity of her menopausal symptoms and their effect on her quality of life.

Saving Lives: When What We Do Really Matters After 46 years of service to our country, 67-year-old retired Central Intelligence Agency employee Marty Roeber and his wife, Bridget, traveled to the island of St. Kitts with their two daughters and husbands and their son and his girlfriend, to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary. While it was their children’s first visit to the small Caribbean island, which is located between Puerto Rico and Antigua, Marty and his wife were no strangers to the intoxicating natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters, and white sandy beaches of St. Kitts. However, what began as a planned eight-day family vacation in paradise quickly turned into a family’s worst nightmare.

Stereotypes Can Be DeceivingBy all accounts, Marty had always led an extremely active life. His friends and family joke that not even retirement could slow down his lust for life! He continued working as a contractor two to three days a week while using his free time to enjoy refinishing antique furniture, running a small business out of an antique mall, taking his wife for joyrides in his 1951 blue Oldsmobile, working on his antique Harley Davidson motorcycle and of course, planning leisurely trips to their family’s timeshare in St. Kitts.

Marty didn’t fit the stereotypical profile of a person who was at-risk for a heart attack. Having never smoked or been overweight he appeared, on the surface, to live an overall healthy lifestyle. But having already suffered two heart attacks before the age of 55, the surface can be deceiving. And now, just two months shy of his 68th birthday, he was about to experience a third heart attack that would nearly claim his life.

FACT: Even though Marty was enrolled in Medicare A and B, Medicare does not extend coverage overseas. Fortunately, because Marty and his wife chose to have a secondary form of coverage, we were able to provide immediate assistance that would not have otherwise been available through Medicare.

The Roeber Family’s Timeshare in St. Kitts

Road Signs to Warning SignsOn the warm and humid morning of Wednesday, March 7th, Marty and his family planned to drive around the island in their rented white van. At just 18 miles long and 5 miles wide, the family had been looking forward to exploring the tiny tropical island’s many cultural monuments and beautiful beaches. However, Marty began feeling under the weather and suffering unaccustomed angina; he decided it was best to return to his room. At first, he didn’t think his situation was serious. After all, he was probably just tired from the week’s activities and needed to rest. After taking a tablet of nitroglycerine (a drug used to treat episodes of angina or chest pain) he closed his eyes to take a much needed nap. However, after awakening, he was surprised that his symptoms had worsened, even at full rest. Because of his prior history with heart attacks, he decided it was time to seek medical attention immediately.

Unfortunately, medical care on the island of St. Kitts is limited. To make matters worse, the island’s main hospital had only two ambulances, which were both unavailable to transport Marty from his family’s timeshare to the hospital. Fearing the worst, the family wasted no time helping Marty into their rented van. Their destination? The Joseph N. France General Hospital on the island of St. Kitts.

After arriving at the hospital, it quickly became clear that the island’s facilities were not equipped to handle Marty’s deteriorating condition. The on-call doctor at Joseph N. France General Hospital kept Marty in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) overnight and the next morning advised Bridget that their best option was to try and schedule a medical evacuation flight to the United States.

Quick Decisions Save LivesNo sooner did the doctor finish his sentence then Bridget and her kids were on three cell phones making calls to their health insurance benefits office and Marty’s stateside cardiologists. With emotions at an all-time high, they frantically contacted their health plan’s administrative office located in Reston, VA. Fortunately Vicki, the Compass Rose Representative who answered Bridget’s phone call, knew to immediately escalate the situation to Mary O’Connell, the Director of Health. With over 30 years of experience working in the health care industry, Mary’s expertise told her that time was not on their side and therefore, she immediately contacted Kim and the medical team at InforMed. Never having been in this type of situation before, there were no instructions on how to best handle this incident. Nevertheless, the severity of the situation didn’t leave the team with much time for second guesses.

Throwing caution to the wind, Kim and her medical team immediately began researching medevac helicopters available to fly to the tiny island. However, they quickly realized that chartering a Learjet was the fastest way to get help to Marty and his family. After reviewing the clinical data, Mary granted approval to charter the Learjet while InforMed continued to work tirelessly on locating the closest state-of-the-art hospital equipped to handle Marty’s serious heart condition. Fortunately, as fate would have it, the nation’s leading cardiac care center was located only 300 miles from St. Kitts in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. With the rescue mission in place, Marty was now less than three hours away from arriving at the Cleveland Clinic where he would receive medical care from the top cardiologists in the country.

Every Second CountsAround midnight EST, the Learjet finally landed at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport where Marty was immediately whisked away in an awaiting ambulance. As they raced down I-95 in route to the Cleveland Clinic, a sense of relief overcame Bridget and Marty because they knew they were on their way to find the care Marty needed and just in time.

Marty arrived at the Cleveland Clinic emergency room feeling well enough to talk with the ER doctor. Less than five minutes after arriving and in mid-sentence, Marty suffered a lethal seizure. Bridget watched as life drained from Marty’s face. She screamed, the doctor shouted “Code Blue!” and jumped on the bed to immediately start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The crash cart was dragged over and they restarted Marty’s heart with a defibrillator. The surgical team that had been called in and at 2 o’clock in the morning began several hours of emergency surgery to open and repair decade-old bypass grafts. Medical technology and expertise combined for a near miracle recovery but the opportunity was only presented because of the quick action by personnel at Compass Rose and InforMed.

Today, Marty and Bridget happily reside in Northern Virginia. When recently asked about the status of his health Marty expressed, “When considering the alternative, I feel great. Every day is a treasure.” Marty and his wife are adamant that he is only alive today because of the quick heroic actions taken by the staff at Compass Rose and InforMed. “The actions of Mrs. O’Connell and the others on the InforMed staff who have assisted and followed up with us amounted to a life-saving intervention. We are impressed beyond words and eternally grateful.”

Compass Rose Charities 3rd Annual Golf Invitational and Auction In 2010, Compass Rose Benefits Group (CRBG) established Compass Rose Charities, Inc. (CRC), a nonprofit charitable corporation whose mission is to provide financial assistance to members of the Intelligence Community. By making a commitment to improve the overall quality of life in the community we serve, CRC provides support through three distinct programs:

1. Charity to Charity Support: Provides funds to other charitable organizations with a similar purpose.

2. Food & Fuel Support: Provides immediate assistance to families experiencing a tragedy.

3. Scholarships: Provides scholarships to members and their immediate family.

On October 18th, 2012, CRC will be hosting their 3rd Annual Golf Invitational and Charity Auction at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland. Last fall, through the generosity of our vendor sponsorships and auction winners, we were able to raise over $65,000 to help support American heroes. This year, CRC is proud to announce that their charity of choice will be Companions For Heroes (C4H), a charity that has aided dozens of our nation’s heroes while finding loving homes for shelter pets.

Heroes Come in Many Shapes and SizesCompanions For Heroes (C4H), formerly known as Pets2Vets (P2V), has been offering aid to our nation’s brave since 2009. Founder David Sharpe, who served in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces, established the program after returning home from deployment overseas and being diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

For years, Sharpe was one of the 10-12 million veterans suffering from various psychological conditions, like PTSD. Fortunately for Sharpe, he was introduced to a Pitbull puppy named Cheyenne who was able to help him begin to heal from the traumatic and life-threatening situation that he had experienced during his last deployment overseas. To this day, Sharpe and his family credit Cheyenne with helping him overcome the social anxiety, crowd phobia, depression, and panic attacks that had been brought on by this painful and debilitating disease.

In October 2009, Sharpe set out on a mission to share his personal struggles and success stories with his brothers and sisters in-arms, firefighters, police officers, first responders and Please Note: All charitable donations and registration fees will directly benefit CRC and C4H.

You Are Cordially Invited…For the first time, Compass Rose Benefits Group (CRBG) members who reside in the Washington Metropolitan Area are cordially invited to attend this fall’s 3rd Annual Golf Invitational and Charity Auction at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland!

The day’s activities will include: lunch prior to tee-off, 18 holes of championship golf, cocktail reception and dinner, a golfer’s goodie bag, and will have the opportunity to participate in the live and silent charity auction that will help raise donations for Companions For Heroes.

patients suffering with PTSD or similar symptoms. It is Sharpe’s hope that C4H will aid American heroes in their recovery from the psychological challenges suffered during service to our country. Today, C4H’s mission is to increase public awareness of PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other challenges confronting our men and women in uniform while rallying support for animal welfare and the adoption of shelter and/or rescue animals.

COMPASS ROSE CHARITIES

If you would like to attend this year’s charity tournament, or just come out for the reception, dinner, auction, and post event celebration party, please register through the Compass Rose Charities website at www.compassrosecharities.org.
