Since our inception in 1948, we have had the privilege of providing our nation’s elite with an assortment of insurance products tailored to meet their unique needs. While our products and services have evolved over the years, our core values and unwavering commitment to our members have remained the same.

This year, Compass Rose Benefits Group proudly celebrates 65 years of service to our members! In honor of this momentous occasion, we would like to share our story with you.

1948 – The CIA established a department responsible for the insurance needs of CIA officers. The department was called the Government Employees Health Association (GEHA). GEHA was incorporated in Washington DC.

2011 – Product eligibility expanded to employees and retirees of the Department of State.

2012 – CRC hosted its third annual Golf Invitational and Charity Auction and raised over $140,000 to help support American Heroes. CRC donated $85,000 to their charity of choice, Companions for Heroes.

2012 – Today, our health plan brochure consists of 94 pages.

1988 – Processing claims manually was replaced by processing claims electronically.

over the years, Compass rose Benefits Group staff has taken pride in giving back to our community. In honor of our 65th Anniversary, we invite you to take a trip down memory lane as we recap on some of our most memorable outreach events!

In celebration of our 65th Anniversary, we have decided to feature a loyal and seasoned CRBG member, Joyce Freund, for your reading pleasure!

Since becoming a Compass Rose member in late fall 1951, I have been afforded quality health care coverage provided in a caring way by efficient service. I decided to run for the Board of Directors as a Retiree Representative after seeing a call for candidates in a 2005 newsletter. During my husband’s career and even after his retirement, provisions of health care coverage were mostly a behind-the-scenes benefit. However, after his death in 1997, I was confronted with decisions about a previously unknown, but vitally important, part of my life – my health care coverage. Facing an important challenge I said to myself, ‘Columbus took a chance and look what happened!’

Words can’t convey what a rewarding challenge and educational opportunity membership on the Board has given me, not only with what I have learned regarding health care coverage, but I’ve also had the privilege of building relationships with officers and staff of CRBG. Perhaps one of my favorite memories throughout the years is attending the annual holiday affairs and gift exchanges hosted by CRBG personnel! More importantly, I value the memories from off-sites, which provide insight to issues and challenges confronting CRBG.

On a personal note, I enjoy needlework—sewing, knitting, and crocheting—and playing contract bridge. Each year, a friend and I make hats and blankets that we donate to a “Pre-school Initiative Program,” which helps prepare children entering school for the first time. We try to create bright, colorful creations. There is a special distribution event at which the children get to choose a hat and a blanket of their very own!

CRBG Board of Directors’ Election ResultsCompass Rose is proud to announce our newly elected 2013 Board of Directors:Active Representative: Julie Lund Retiree Representative: Gwen Gaskins

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to continue representing retiree members on the Board of Directors. I look forward to working with members, Compass Rose officers, and the rest of the Board as we work toward our common goal of providing a health plan that best meets the needs of our members. - Gwen Gaskins

Does cold weather make you feel blue? If it does, you are not alone. Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that affects nearly 25 million Americans each year. WebMD defines seasonal affective disorder (SAD) as a type of depression that affects a person during the same season each year. Experts believe that SAD may cause problems with a brain chemical, called serotonin, and may be brought on by a lack of sunlight. Anyone can get SAD, but it is more common in:

• People who live in areas where winter days are very short or there are big changes in the amount of daylight throughout different seasons.

• Women.

• People between the ages of 15 and 55. The risk of being affected by SAD for the first time goes down as you age.

• People who have a close relative with SAD.

If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder, you should contact your local health care provider. Experts also recommend increasing your daily exercise and trying these fairly healthy foods that have been proven to boost your mood:

• Popcorn

• Oatmeal (original)

• Nuts

• Egg whites for omelets

So don’t let the cold weather get you down! Contact your local health care provider today to learn more about seasonal affective disorder and ways to treat it.

Fun Facts: On average, a person eats 65 apples in their lifetime. Fun Facts: The longest recorded bout of hiccups lasted for 65 years.

ADVANCES IN DENTAL TECHNOLOGYIn the past several years, a number of new dental advances have changed the way

that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentists alike.

In this article, we will focus on some of the biggest advances in digital imaging

technologies and their impact on patients. To begin, digital imaging refers to

technologies which allow your dentist to capture images of your mouth without

the use of film. Of these technologies, we’ll discuss intraoral cameras, digital

x-rays, and the new Cerec Omnicam. Intraoral cameras refer to small cameras

mounted on top of a wand that are used to capture close-up images of your teeth.

These cameras provide a very accurate picture of what the surface of the teeth

look like, which in turn provides dentists with a much more accurate diagnosis

and the opportunity to educate patients. The next time you’re at the dentist, you

may notice an intraoral camera being used, which displays a video of the tooth

before an image is “captured.” The picture(s) is/are stored with your dental

records, allowing your dentist to review with you at a later time. In addition to a

more accurate diagnosis, the pictures are beneficial in the event a dentist needs to

provide an insurance company with evidence of tooth decay.

The second type of digital imaging technology is digital bite-wing x-rays and panoramic x-rays. These x-rays come in two

different types. Bite-wing x-rays show details of the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth, which are then used

to detect any changes or decay between the teeth. Like intraoral cameras, these images are stored with your dental records

in order to help the dentist accurately diagnose dental problems. The other type of imaging, panoramic x-rays, show the

entire mouth—all teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. These x-rays provide an accurate full picture of your mouth and

allow the dentist to determine the position of teeth and evaluate emerging or impacted teeth. Together, these digital x-rays

let your dentist quickly and accurately diagnose problems or potential problems with your teeth.

The final imaging technology we’d like to preview is perhaps one of the most exciting for patients and dentists alike – it’s

the Cerec Omnicam. If you’ve had a crown put on your tooth, you’ll remember how an impression was made with dental

putty, then sent to a lab, and once returned, the crown was placed on your tooth. With the Cerec Omnicam, that has all

changed—now your crowns are milled while you wait. Simply put, this new system allows dentists to use a digital camera

wand, like an intraoral camera, to capture the three dimensional nature of a tooth. This image is immediately sent to a

milling unit where a crown is created and then placed on your tooth all during the same appointment.

It’s a great time in dentistry with new digital imaging technologies such as intraoral cameras, digital x- rays, and the

Cerec Omnicam. Not every dentist has these technologies in their office today—in fact, less than 10% have a Cerec

Omnicam in their office. Be sure to check with your dentist to see how they’re using dental technologies to enhance

your dental experience.

changed—now your crowns are milled while you wait.

MyelomaMyeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white cell found primarily in the marrow. In myeloma, the cell type that forms plasma cells (known as the B lymphocyte) becomes malignant. Overtime, malignant plasma cells amass in the marrow and sometimes other sites in the body, disrupting normal bone tissue and causing pain to the individual. Nearly 90% of people with myeloma have disease involving multiple sites at the time of diagnosis.

In 2012, an estimated 20,520 new cases of myeloma are expected to be diagnosed in the United States. To date, the cause of myeloma is unknown in many cases. Studies show that long-term exposure to certain chemicals may increase a person’s risk of developing myeloma, but most people who have myeloma do not have any history of such exposure, indicating that other factors must play major roles.

No One is InvincibleEach year, nearly 70,000 young adults between the ages of 15 and 39 are diagnosed with cancer. In contrast to those younger and older, survival rates for young adults have not increased since 1975. We need to fix this. With over 1.4 million young adult cancer survivors in the United States alone, there is simply no reason that anyone should ever feel alone.

While there are far too many types of cancer, blood cancers are expected to account for 9% of the estimated over 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. in 2012. Last year, an estimated combined total of 140,310 Americans are expected to have been diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.

LeukemiaToday, an estimated 274,930 Americans are living with, or are in remission from, leukemia. While there are four major types of leukemia depending on the cells involved, in general, leukemia is characterized by the uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. One type of leukemia, Acute Myeloid leukemia (AML) is 57% higher in young adults than children.

Unfortunately, leukemia is the 10th most frequently occurring type of cancer in all races or ethnicities. The cause of most cases of leukemia is unknown.

LymphomaLymphoma is a general term for many blood cancers that originate in the lymphatic system. Lymphoma results when a lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell, undergoes a malignant change and multiplies out of control. Eventually, healthy cells are crowded out and malignant lymphocytes amass in the lymph nodes, liver, spleen and/or other sites in the body.

The two main types include: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). In 2012, an estimated 662,789 individuals in the U.S. were living with, or in remission from, lymphoma. This number includes 159,846 people with HL and 502,943 with NHL. Over the last decade, there has been an overall increase in the incidence of lymphoma in young adults.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma accounts for slightly less than 1% of all cancers worldwide and is considered one of the most curable forms of cancer. This disease has characteristics that distinguish it from other diseases classified as lymphoma, including the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. These are large, cancerous cells found in Hodgkin lymphoma tissues, named for the scientists who first identified them. While some studies have suggested external factors such as environmental exposure or contact with Epstein-Bar virus (EBG) may cause Hodgkin, these findings remain unclear and unfounded. Adolescents and young adults are more commonly diagnosed with HL than younger children.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma represents a diverse group of diseases that are distinguished by the characteristics of the cancer cells associated with each disease type. Like HL, the cause of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is unknown. This disease is the 6th most common cause of cancer deaths in males and the seventh in females.
