PROGRAM NOTE

SETTING

HARVEY takes place in a city in the Far West in the library of the old Dowd family mansion and the reception room of Chumley’s Rest.

TIME: Fall of 1944

My first memory of live theater goes back to being a 10-year-old going to see my older brother in a play at North High School. That play was Harvey (he played Judge Gaffney). It was at that time that Mrs. (Jean) Shutt introduced me to the theater. It was at that time that I began a love affair that has lasted the last 30+ years. I decided then and there that I wanted to be involved in theater. I also fell in love with Harvey and it quickly became a bucket list show for me.Several years later, when I got to North, I got to spend one year learning from Mrs. Shutt before she turned the reins over to Mrs. (Nancy) Livengood. I have had the good fortune to learn and work with many wonderful people since that time. This is part of what inspired some of the set decoration for this show. The pictures of the Dowd family members on the library wall are members of the CT family that we have lost in the last several years, along with several people that have inspired me along my artistic journey. I would like to highlight a couple of those people on the wall, because they have been a big part of my experience at CT. John Apgar was the first person to welcome me to the CT family when I did my first show, Wait Until Dark. The second person on the wall that was important to me personally was Shirley Moyer. What saddens me the most is that this is the first show that I have done at CT in which Shirley is not with me in some capacity. Her forte was make-up; however, I worked with her in many different capacities. Her passing left a big hole in my heart and though she is not working with me in person, I know she is here in spirit. All of the people pictured on the set are part of our family here at CT, whether I personally worked with them or not, and this is my way of honoring them for playing their part.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

STEPHANIE CRAIG (Myrtle Mae)* is thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with the cast and crew of Harvey. Hoping this is the first of many productions to come with Community Theatre of Terre Haute, she sends a BIG “Thank you!” out to everyone she has met with CTTH, from auditions to opening night, for making her feel welcome and a part of the family.

TREY DONOVAN (Duane Wilson) is thrilled to be back onstage here at CT and is looking forward to working with such great people!

STEVEN FIVECOAT (Lyman Sanderson) has been doing theatre since the 2003-2004 season where he first performed as a court minstrel. Since then he has done many theatre roles both onstage and off. His most favorite (and challenging) roles onstage include parts from two different Edward Albee plays, Seascape and The Zoo Story. The latter show, an Oakley Stage production, marked the first of three recent collaborations with Bill Carper. The most recent was last season’s Oakley Stage production of Talley’s Folly. Steven again is returning to work onstage with Lesli Marnewick, his lovely Talley’s Folly costar. “Thanks to all for their hard work in bringing Harvey to life on the stage; break legs everyone!”

CHRISTOPHER GAGNON (Judge Gaffney) is happy to be back on stage at Community Theatre. He currently teaches chemistry at Terre Haute South Vigo High School where he played the role of the Narrator/Mysterious Man in their production of Into The Woods last year. He most recently played the role of Freddy in last season’s production of Picasso At The Lapin Agile. Other favorite roles include Dr. Einstein in Arsenic And Old Lace, and Bobby Franklin in Run For Your Wife. Christopher would like to thank his five pet rats, Otto, Luna, Marie, Irène and Rosie, for their continued support.

JOSH HOFFMAN (Elwood P. Dowd) first appeared onstage at CTTH as Tulsa in Gypsy in 1992 and has been actively involved in almost every aspect

of the theatre both on and offstage in dozens of productions as a performer, designer, choreographer, director and Board Member. A winner of the coveted BARG (Best All aRound Guy) Award, he is also a 3 time Talley Award Winner (Including BEST ACTOR for his performance as EDNA in Hairspray). A Clay County native, Josh traveled in over a dozen national tours of children’s theatre and directed three tours for the American Family Theatre, based in Philly, PA, before returning to the Midwest in 2005. He has worked with most local theatre groups in the Wabash Valley including ISU and Theatre On The Square in Indianapolis. Josh sends special thanks to Kevin for guiding him thru such a wonderful role, JW for the many late night chats and your vivacious spirit, the cast and crew for being so patient and so much fun to have worked with, and most of all to his family for their continuous unconditional love and support. ENJOY!!!

DEANNA KREUTZ (Veta Louise)* is a newcomer to Terre Haute, having recently relocated from the East Coast. She is thrilled to have been able to join the cast for the season opener at C.T. after being “off the boards” for more than ten years. Her favorite roles include Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song, JoAnn in Company, Rose in Gypsy, and Holly in Uncommon Women and Others. Deanna currently works in Institutional Advancement at Rose-Hulman and lives here in Terre Haute with her boyfriend, Patrick, and their two cats, Jake … and Elwood.

ROB LEE (E.J. Lofgren)* is very excited to be a part of his first CT production.

MICK MACK (Dr. Chumley) has been performing onstage since 1988, the inaugural season for Vermillion County Community Theater, where he portrayed Editor Webb in Our Town. Since that time he has performed with Parke Players, Vermillion County and Community Theatre of Terre Haute productions in roles ranging from Jesus in Jesus Christ, Superstar! to John Adams in 1776! Along the way Mick has performed two seasons at Shawnee Theater of Greene County, Indiana’s longest-running summer stock theater, and opened for the Myers Dinner Theater, with good friend Doug Short, in their first season in Waynetown, Indiana. He also opened at their new (and current) location in Hillsboro, Indiana. Mick has played roles from psychiatrists to psychos including a stint as Parke Players’ Covered Bridge Festival melodrama resident Villain. The first time Mick was cast in Harvey was as the young Dr. Sanderson, now... oh, well! Mick has thoroughly enjoyed working with this cast on this production and sends love and kisses to his wife of over thirty years, Jacquie, who puts up so well with his eccentricities.

LESLI MARNEWICK (Miss Johnson) is fairly new to Community Theatre, with her first production being onstage in last season’s Oakley Stage presentation of Talley’s Folly. Harvey marks the second production in which she has worked with fellow actor Steven Fivecoat and has enjoyed working with him in both plays. “I want to say a huge thank you to the amazing cast and crew for the wonderful experience I’ve had while working on my first main stage play. Let’s have a great show and have fun bringing Harvey to life on stage!”

ALLY MILES (Nurse Kelly) is a freshman at Indiana State University and is excited to be in her first show at CT in 9 years! Some of her favorite roles include the Wicked Witch of the West in Maple Avenue’s production of The Wizard of Oz and the Witch in Terre Haute South’s production of Into The Woods. She is a communication major while minoring in theatre. She is eager to be out of CT retirement and can’t wait to do more shows!

LAURA REED (Mrs. Chumley) is the manager of ResCare’s Day Services. She loves her job and is thankful that it allows her to “play.” She has been involved in all aspects of theatre, on stage and back stage. She has even served on the board of directors for two different community theatres. Laura is beyond thankful for her theatre family. Without them she might have needed a room at Chumley’s Rest. “You don’t know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”A special thank you to PA.... There would never have been a BA without you!”

PAM VIRGILIO (Aunt Ethel) has been involved in Community Theatre since 2005. She is a member of the Community Theatre Board of Directors and has appeared in several productions, been an Assistant Director, and worked backstage. She has also appeared at Crossroads Repertory Theatre in You Can’t Take It With You and was their Advertising Director this summer. Her favorite role was Marmee in Little Women, for which she won an award. When she’s not at the Theatre, she is a Senior Client Associate at Wells Fargo Advisors and Crew Member of her family’s drag racing team. Hope you enjoy the show!

PEGGY APGAR (Stage Manager) has been active in many aspects of CT for 35 years…president, secretary, website, ad sales, program book, brochure, acting, props, light board, stage manager, producer, but a real love is costuming. “I love it all, especially being with new and old friends—we’re a family. You meet so many interesting people of all ages and backgrounds at CT.”

MARYANN BOYD (Props) works at UAP Clinic, Surgery Scheduler for the Ophthalmology Dept. and is a native to Terre Haute. Maryann has been part of Children’s Theatre of Terre Haute for 17 years, being Assistant Director, Producer and now active on the Children’s Theatre Board. Her first introduction to Community Theatre was Assistant Director for Love, Sex and The IRS and is looking forward to working with Community Theatre again. She would like to thank her family, friends for their love and support and to Jackson, her grandson, the new love of her life.

GLENDA CORDELL (Producer) is a native of Terre Haute and has worked in numerous performance venues throughout the area, behind the scenes as well as on stage. Most recently, she revived her role as House Manager at Crossroads Repertory Theatre. A longtime volunteer of Community Theatre, she serves on several committees and sits on the Board of Directors. “I believe the escape we find in entertainment is as important to us as shelter and sustenance.”

KAREN CRISPIN (Costumes) was last on CT’s stage in last season’s Picasso At The Lapin Agile playing the sassy French waitress Germaine. Favorite roles include Barbara, (Social Security - for which she won CT’s Best Lead Actress Runner Up), Edna (Prisoner Of Second Avenue), Lily St. Regis (Annie). She is no stranger to backstage having done costumes, makeup, props, assistant stage manager, dance captain, and personal dresser. Karen teaches French, English, and theater at West Vigo High School where she also directs the school play and musical. She has directed the Vigo County School Corporation’s Performing Arts Workshop since 2011. She thanks her kids for being so patient, especially Sarah, who keeps things running at home, so mom can “play a part”!

BOB CUNDIFF (Set design) is the father of five children and grandfather of two handsome grandsons. When not working as a Project Manager for the Architectural Firm MMS A/E or spoiling his grandsons, he indulges in his hobbies which include Cycling, R / C planes and G-scale trains. Bob’s favorite

acting experience was Beverly Carlton in The Man Who Came to Dinner (2005) also the Psychiatrist in Curious Savage (2006) and he was the set designer and master carpenter for Diary of Anne Frank (Best-Set 2006) and Meet Me In St. Louis (Best-Set 2012). “Follow your bliss.”

DAVID DEL COLLETTI (Lighting designer) is a professor emeritus of theatre from Indiana State University where he was the Producing and Technical Director and Resident Lighting Designer. After 5 years as the event programmer of ISU’s Performing Arts Series and 7 years as Production Manager with Crossroads Repertory Theatre, he is now completely retired from ISU. This past year he has designed lighting for Rose-Hulman’s productions of Jekyll and Hyde, Sherlock Holmes and Cats. At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, he designed Murder at Saint Mary’s and Nunsense. He opened CTTH last season by designing Ain’t Misbehavin’. He also kept busy last year as the president of the Terre Haute South Rotary Club and, with his wife, visiting his daughters Quincy in Anderson, South Carolina, and Alexis in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

LARAINE FRANKS (Sound) works at the Vigo County Library. She has been a volunteer at CT for more than 50 productions and has a million more friends because of it. To quote Dr. Sanderson: ”You know how it is working around people all day. You sort of get attached to them…. It may be ridiculous, but I’m gonna miss every one of the psychos, neuros, and schizos in the place.”

TERRI FULK (Set decorator) was first seen onstage at CT in the highly popular Hairspray. What an amazing initiation into theatre. She was also a part of the CT production of Red Velvet Cake War and Babes in Toyland. Most recently she was able to take part in the Maple Ave. United Methodist church’s summer theatre production of Sound of Music as Mother Abbess. It has been an incredible adventure, and she feels so very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing, talented family.

COLLEEN SULLIVAN (Makeup and Hair) is a dental hygienist and works for Dr. Gregory Jennings. She is the proud mother of Kelly and Brian and is active in the music ministry at St. Joseph University parish. Colleen has participated at CT as a choreographer, usher and actor. “After many years being onstage and wearing make up, I enjoy being backstage with the actors, keeping their spirits high, and helping them look good or bad depending on the role.”

KEVIN WARD (Director) serves as an instructor in the Department of Communication at Indiana State. Kevin has been involved at Community Theater as the stage manager for A Christmas Story and directed The Odd Couple (Female Version). In addition, Kevin has worked for Crossroads

Repertory Theatre as the stage manager for Godspell, Crimes of the Heart, and Return of Neverland. Kevin also portrayed Wilbur in Hairspray and Martin in Social Security here at CT.

JACOB WHITE (Assistant Director) is starting his second season with Community Theatre of Terre Haute. After his first production last season, as Music Director for Babes In Toyland, he has continued to stay active in the local theatre scene. Most recently, he finished a series of performances as the smarmy but all too “loveable” character ‘Max Dettweiler’ in Maple Avenue Methodist Church’s production of The Sound Of Music. Later in this 2014-15 season, he will act as Music Director for CTTH’s production of The Wedding Singer. This is his first show to work as Assistant Director. On a personal note -Special thanks to all of the cast and crew of the show for making it such an easy experience for me. Furthermore, I will be forever grateful to our Director, Kevin Ward, for giving me this opportunity to help him create his unique vision of this beloved classic story. Thank you for joining us this evening. Enjoy the show!
