Absolutely Abs: Midsection Make-OverWe all have four layers of abdominal muscles, each with fibers running in a different direction. This criss-crossing pattern shapes your mid-section and supports the lower back. There are many rea-sons why the abs can weaken and lose shape: past pregnancies, abdominal surgery, sitting for hours a day at a desk, to name a few. In this workshop we will: strengthen all 4 layers of ab muscle without getting on the floor; re-shape your waistline; show you how to correct this problem; regain control of ab muscles that have been cut from surgery; strengthen abs from the inside out; anywhere/anytime ab exercises that fit into even the busiest of schedules; get a tummy tuck without surgery; relieve lower back discomfort; check for Diastasis Rectus - overstretched abdominal connective tis-sue from pregnancies one year or decades ago. (If you have this, it will change how you need to do ab exercises because common crunches will only serve to weaken muscles further). Come prepared to exercise and bring a mat.

Positive Approaches to Perimenopause/Menopause: Metabolism Boosters & BustersPerimenopause actually starts around the age of 35 for most women and can last 10-15 years. Common symptoms include: fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, water retention, depression, sleep distur-bances, joint aches, hot flashes, migraines, fibroids, and exaggerated PMS. These symptoms are not “in your head”. They are real and irritants you don’t need to live with. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is probably because you have a hormone imbalance going on. In this workshop, we’ll talk about how to get your hormone levels measured – blood test vs. saliva test and what to do with the results. We’ll discuss the latest research findings on traditional HRT and what it means for you. We’ll talk about safer alternatives to traditional HRT; synthetic vs. bio-identical hormones; the use of herbs for relieving symptoms and obtaining bal-ance; which vitamins and minerals are needed in greater quantity and guidelines for choosing a well balanced multivitamin and mineral supplement. Come and learn some simple ways to restore health and balance. *Supply cost ($7) included in tuition.

Early Childhood Screening (ECS) 952-226-0975

The early childhood years, from birth to the start of kindergarten, are an im-portant time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening (ECS) is a quick and simple check of how your child is doing. Screening takes place at Edgewood School, 5304 WestWood Drive in Prior Lake. The preferred age to screen is between the ages of 3 and 4 years old. All children need to be screened before enrolling in kindergarten. If your child is of screening age, please contact us ASAP by CALLING: 952-226-0975 or E-MAILING: [email protected] Contact ECS at the above number, if conscientiously opposed to the screen-ing process.

Are you concerned about your child’s development? Please call 952.226.0980No two children develop, grow or learn in the same way or do things at the same pace. However, they do develop in predictable ways. If you have a child between the ages of newborn to 5 years and are concerned about their growth, development or learning, or want information relating to any special needs you see, we encourage you to contact us at 952-226-0980.

RED FLAGS - CONCERNS: • Loss of skills at any point in development • Any significant accidents, traumas or illnesses • Pregnancy or delivery complications • Lack of social awareness or responses to others • Low or high muscle tone (tight, floppy, loose) • Unsafe activity level • Extreme irritability • Extremely low arousal reactions (underactivity)

In this workshop we will: strengthen all 4 layers of ab muscle without getting on the floor; re-shape your waistline; show you how to correct this problem; regain control of ab muscles that have been cut from surgery; strengthen abs from the inside out; anywhere/anytime ab exercises that fit into even the busiest of schedules; get a tummy tuck without surgery; relieve lower back discomfort; check for Diastasis Rectus - overstretched abominal connective tis-sue from pregnancies one year or decades ago. (If you have this, it will change how you need to do ab exercises because common crunches will only serve to weaken muscles further). Come prepared to exercise and bring a mat.

As you have surely noticed throughout the catalog, Community Education Services has a wide variety of popular course offerings for all residents. We are proud to continually be able to serve all learners in our district.

Our K-12 schools also offer a variety of education options for students that meet learners where they are academically, help each reach their full potential and are pro-vided in a fiscally responsible manner. Here are just a few examples.

Extended Day K & Half Day K Now in its fourth year, each elementary school in the district provides the parent- paid option, Extended Day K for children who could benefit from a longer structured learning day. Half-Day K, an equally popular program, also provides a well-rounded curriculum at Edgewood (there is no charge to parents for the Half- Day program).

Words Their WayThis elementary school curriculum helps students learn spelling, reading and comprehen-sion in ways that go beyond memorization to better understanding and retention. Best of all, teachers can differentiate to meet the unique learning needs of every child.

SAGE AcademySAGE is a new program for gifted and talented students in grades 3-5. This school within- a-school located at WestWood Elementary serves the unique learning needs of gifted students.

Middle School Advanced ProgrammingCurrently our advanced programming for middle school students is under review to help ensure students in this age group continue to be challenged and can learn with peers of similar abilities at both Hidden Oaks and Twin Oaks.

Project Lead the WayThanks to a grant from the Kern Foundation, middle school students are benefitting from this new program. PLTW is designed to get students interested in engineering through real-world, long-term projects that integrate math, science and technology to boost achievement and expose students to potential careers. This program will be expanded to PLHS next year with Introduction to Engineering Design.

Bridges Area Learning CenterBridges opened this school year at Northgate Center with 65 students enrolled and plans to welcome more students next year. An alternative learning center, Bridges is designed to reach all learners in 9-12th grade - especially those who struggle in traditional schools.

On-line LearningFinally, PLHS will implement hybrid on-line courses next year. These classes will offer juniors and seniors a combination of face-to-face interaction with the teacher in conjunction with independent, on-line learning.

These are just a few of the ways we are able to offer specialized programming at little to no cost, serve the unique learning needs of all students, and keep and attract new students. Whether through Community Ed or our K-12 schools, I hope you will see for yourself what Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools can offer you.

Advisory Councils are active task-oriented groups who make recommendations about policies, procedures, program offerings, budgets, and more for ISD 719 Community Education Services programs. Together these groups determine what resources could be utilized to meet the needs and interests of community members without duplicating the efforts provided by others.

If you would be interested in working with a council to address the lifelong learning needs of our district, please call Leanne J. Weyrauch, Director

at 952-226-0082, to request an application for membership.
