The Long Island Single Sailor’s Association .. Our 26th Year Dedicated to Sailing and Boating Vol. 29 No. 3 March 2016 God Bless America Commodores Corner Howard Marks As the Ides of March swing into action, we have the Kings Park, St. Patricks Day Parade on the 5th, the per- formance of Desert Highway, the Eagles tribute band, at the 5 Towns Theater on the 12th, and a Happy Hour at the Carraige House in Babylon on the 25th. But we need more events for the future. We have always encouraged folks to show up at the Planning Meetings with ideas for new events, or even new ideas for old events. We have 25 years of water under the bridge. I know that folks are busy and times have changed. We have new obliga- tions, graduations, weddings and grandchildren, just a few of the joys of life that many of us are rewarded with during our time here on the planet. We owe it to our- selves to pay attention to these things and not miss the opportunity to embrace the fruits of our lives to the fullest extent possible. There are tears as well, but lets not dwell there. The balancing act, doesnt get easier. As Im sure you will agreeRelationships need to be worked. A neglected relationship will not last and if folks arent looking into the LISSA future and agree to add their energy to the flow, our days are numbered. It s a sign of the times, I guess. I speak openly and frankly, no regrets and no acrimony. As I ve asked before, what happens when I, your humble servant, vacate the com- modorial seat? Weve been here 6 years. How many more years can we do this? Someone needs to step upI sincerely hope the club remains viable for many more years. FolksSpeak not of what ought to be done, but of what you will do. So lets move on. We have Saturday, March 5 th , to enjoy one of the great St. Pattys Day Parades on LI, after which we will all meet at the Main Street Pub, just up the street, for a glass of green beer and a serving of delicious corned beef and cabbage for $2.00 a plate. If we are lucky, a bagpiper will drop by and blow. There is nothing in the world like a bagpipe. You know, they have only 8 notes, with no sharps or flats. Playing a tune us- ing only 8 notes requires a kind of musical license which is why the bagpipe has a very strange, very unique and compelling sound to it. (See Coming About for more.) Celebrate St. Patricks Day with us at our social at Nocellos which happens to fall on the day,Thursday, March 17 th . DJ Rick will be playing some Irish tunes and corned beef and cabbage will be on the menu. Hope to see you there. Remember to SOS”, support our so- cials. Speaking of things new, please watch for email from George Fuchs about last minute events which might be of interest to LISSA members. As time moves forward we would appreciate your feedback on how this new program is working out. Events listed in this way will not conflict with events already on the calendar, but will and should add to the mix of things to do with LIS- SA members. Future events: The Belmont Brunch is Dead. The event costs have been going up and it s becoming more and more difficult for people to make an ad- vanced commitment and so, the Belmont event has run its course. We thank Will for many years of hosting this great afternoon. However, please watch for the Bel- mont event done differently, later this summer. Will has reorganized the event such that those who still want to go can sit in the stands. This is relatively inexpensive. It would still be an interesting and very enjoyable event albeit the luxury of the Club House. The date will be June 18th. Read Wills details in Coming About. Anything Goesthe play. Terry Schumann is hosting this play which will be showing on Saturday, May 14 th , at The Broadhollow Theater in East Islip, at 8:00 PM. Advanced tickets for seniors are only $21.00 ($28.00 at the door night of the show). Get tickets on you own with the theater. Call (631) 581-2700. Dinner prior to the show will be at a restaurant near the theater and so you will need to call Terry and let her know you will be part of the group. This show will Sell Out Quickly. Please reserve today. See flyer. Crab Meadow this year will be on July 9 th , 1. Peter Aiello and Kathy Peccia will be your host. They will need the usual array of helpers, of course, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for their solicitations for help. Were not really worried. Folks have always lent a hand when needed. We thank Peter & Kathy for their dedication. Change of Watch: We are currently looking for a new place for our Change of Watch, with an eye to sav- ing money, as we dont have an abundance of funds like weve had in past years. We havent ruled out the Watermill but, if you have any thoughts, please contact me or George Fuchs with any ideas you might have. See you all – Out There!

HAPPY MARCH BIRTHDAY

A Message from the Rear Commodore…..

Last month, only 3 LISSA members attended the February Happy Hour at Madi-son's Steakhouse. Maybe it's the weather, season or lack of interest in H.H.'s. For March, answering a request from members for a Western Suffolk or Nassau location, I will try again for Friday, March 25th at The Babylon Carriage House, located at 21 Fire Island Avenue in Babylon Village from 3pm to 7pm; 2 for 1 Drinks and $5 Appetizer Menu with a Complimentary Buffet. Get there early be-cause parking is at a premium in the Village. There are about 50 or so tables and chairs around the bar and on a patio area just outside. They are not reserved and are available for first come, first served - come early. I hope to see you there. At the last Planning Meeting I mentioned an oyster farming program in East Islip, on further investigation it turned out to be an extensive program with the opportuni-ty to farm your own oysters. It's pricey, but you can buy various sized seed oys-ters and raise them yourself. If you're really into oysters (really fresh ones) go to www.gsbhatchery.com for info. As the spring and summer months approach, there are many opportunities for nautical based events and venues, such as Beach Hut lobster bakes, dinner cruis-es on the Moonchaser, bayside wining and dining in and around the Bay Shore Marina, etc. I am open to, and would welcome suggestions from members for spring and summer activities. Better yet, bring your ideas and information to the March Planning Meeting on the 10th.

Thanks again to Will for arranging Birthday Babies for February. The food was delicious and the crowd, alt-hough small, was delightful. Too bad only Elida was the only birthday baby who attended, but we all wished her a very happy birthday and enjoyed all the wine!!! ... Sally H. Special thanks to Will Krusyman for hosting our Birth-day Babies dinner for all the February Babies. March and the remaining months are still open and anyone interested please contact me and I'll be glad to reserve the month. ...Kathy P.

Thanks to those who joined us for the February Birthday Babies dinner at Orlando's. As always Manny served up fine food and all the wine we could drink, for $30 each. The conversation with the round table of guests was delightful. The monthly dinners are a real treat and

I wish more of you would avail yourselves of this oppor-tunity to get together. ...Terry and Will The Belmont Garden Terrace where we held our annual luncheon has raised the price so high, among other things, that there will be no Belmont Day for LISSA this June. However, I plan to take the third Saturday in June, the 18th, to do my own thing at the track. Eat hot dogs, bet, check out the paddock, bet, enjoy a cool one, bet, watch the races from a grandstand seat, bet some more, and have a fun afternoon around the picnic area, at the rail and at the windows. If you would like to join me and others of a like mind give me a call. Stop me at a social to let me know if you are interested. If there is enough interest I will see about getting to Belmont early to grab a picnic table or two or "reserve" a bunch of grandstand seats so we can all win or lose togeth-er. We can also bring a few coolers with food and drink as so many other groups do….Will
