About Us

Maximimum fun, minimal drag—for us, that’s always been the program, both from a boat-design perspective and as a guiding philosophy.

2 Sailing Collection

It’s hard to imagine a more graceful synergy between

people, nature and technology than sailing, an art that

tests a sailor’s ability to work with the wind, the waves

and his sails to smoothly flow through air and water. The

iconography and the romance of the sport are easy to

fall in love with, but—until a few decades ago—yacht

clubs, spendy marinas and huge operating budgets

served as barriers to access, keeping most interested

parties ashore.

Spectators the world

over watched high-

performance sailing

thinking, “If only…”

Hobie Alter fell in love

with surfing and the

ocean at a formative

age that coincided

perfectly with surfing’s

gilded era. Based in Southern California, he quickly

emerged as a prominent surfboard shaper, champion

surfer and fledgling businessman. He opened his first

shop, Hobie Surfboards, in Dana Point, California, in

1954, where he sold his high-quality, hand-built balsa-

core-and-fiberglass boards. The shop was a success,

but the massive breakthrough came a few years later

when Alter and Gordon “Grubby” Clark invented the

world’s first foam-core-and-fiberglass surfboards, forever

revolutionizing surfing with lighter, more agile boards.

The mid-60s found Alter hanging around Hawaii,

surfing and sailing different boats, including his friend

Woody “Spider” Brown’s catamaran, Manu Kai. Back

stateside, Alter and Phil Edwards set about designing

and building the world’s first fiberglass sailing cats.

Their design brief was simple: The boat had to be

durable and beaching-friendly, powerful enough to

punch through the surf and simple to sail, and it had

to pay huge dividends in the fun department for all

audiences. After spending countless hours designing,

Page 3: Sailing Collection - Hobie · 2 Sailing Collection It’s hard to imagine a more graceful synergy between people, nature and technology than sailing, an art that tests a sailor’s

3hobiecat.com

testing, breaking and fixing their prototype, the company

unveiled the Hobie 14 in 1968.

While the 14-footer was an international hit, Alter soon

began considering a bigger, two-person catamaran with

even higher performance attributes than his first design.

The result, the Hobie 16—one of the world’s best-loved

sailboats—was loosed on Southern California in 1970.

Virtually overnight, high-performance sailing became

accessible for everyone—not just the wealthy. A lifestyle

centering on Hobie-organized regattas and beach

parties emerged, and the term, “Have a Hobie Day” went

mainstream. By 1997 the Hobie 16 earned its way into

the Sailboat Hall of Fame—the first multihull to earn this

honor—and today there are some 150,000 Hobie Cats®

being sailed, raced and enjoyed everywhere.

Today, Hobie catamarans are built in the USA, Europe and

Australia, and Alter’s basic concept of ditching sailing’s

pomp and circumstance and hanging it out on the wire—

both literally

and figuratively—is still our M.O.

These days, however, our U.S. office conceives the

more family friendly designs such as the Bravo, the Wave

and the Getaway, while our European sister company,

Hobie Cat Europe, pens the go-fast speed machines such

as the Hobie Wild Cat, a true Formula-18 class killer.

More recently, we’ve been focusing on an even more

versatile form of sailing, namely stepping masts onto

our specially designed sailing kayaks. For Hobie, this

draws together another area of our core expertise, as

we’ve built some of the world’s most innovative kayaks

since 1996. Now, with multi-sport boats such as the

Adventure Island and the new, two-person Tandem

Island, you can enjoy the best of all worlds as your

vessel easily converts from a paddling kayak—or, thanks

to its Hobie MirageDrive®, a pedaling kayak—to a sailing-

rig-equipped trimaran in minutes. And because it’s a

Hobie, you can count on snappy performance, innovative

features and longstanding durability.

Whether your goal is a sunset sail with your family,

a sailing/paddling/pedaling-weekend adventure

or the starting line of an adrenaline-choked World

Championship regatta, expect great performance, count-

on-it dependability and—most importantly—big grins

from Hobie.

As clued-in sailors have said with a knowing smile since

the early ‘70s, “Have A Hobie Day.”

Simple, safe and fun, the Hobie Bravo’s stable design and bombproof construction make it ideal for sailors of all skill levels, from the junior making his or her first solo tacks to the racecourse ace enjoying a breezy-day joyride. The boat’s rotomolded polyethylene hull encourages beaching and makes docking—even on gusty days—consequence-free. The Bravo’s generously cut, square-top mainsail captures mere zephyrs, yet automatically sloughs-off air pressure when the puffs hit. The unique A-frame mast support is easy to step, and the boomless, roller-furling, multicolored Dacron mainsail makes shortening sail safe and dependable.

Looking for a do-everything, go-everywhere family sailing cat that’s safe and dependable for the juniors, yet also entertaining for mom and dad? If so, the Hobie Wave is ready to play. Its asymmetrical underbody shape eliminates the need for daggerboards, and its rotomolded polyethylene hulls are virtually indestructible. A large, fully battened, boomless mainsail provides plenty of power in the light stuff, but twists off in a breeze for added control. Enjoyed solo or with friends, the Wave is also available as the Wave Club edition, ideal for schools, organizations or resorts.

Few experiences beat an afternoon spent sailing with friends and family…except maybe if it’s spent on a fast, nimble catamaran that’s big enough to accommodate the whole crew. Unlike “party boats” that are better at floating around than footing off, the Getaway has serious sailing legs thanks to its powerful, mainsail-driven sailplan and its asymmetrically shaped underbody. With the Getaway, there’s no worry about beaching or “dock bites”; its rotomolded hull is super-durable and impact-resistant. But most impressive is the Getaway’s awesome value—expect years’ worth of big grins for a modest price.

Why choose between a kayak and a sailboat when the Hobie Mirage® Adventure Island delivers the best of both boats in one high-performance package? Unbolt the aka crossbars and ama floats and you have an adventure-touring kayak; re-attach the float kit, step the sailing rig and you have a stable, fast trimaran. A roller-furling, vertically battened mainsail provides lift, a daggerboard prevents lateral slip, and the amas easily fold parallel against the hull to simplify negotiating tight spots. Best yet, the MirageDrive® is there for you when the wind softens, or when you’re in kayaking mode.

Game-changer. The Hobie 16 was unleashed on the Southern California beach scene in 1970, forever broadening the world’s concept of a sailboat. Now, over forty years later, this 1997 Sailboat Hall of Fame inductee continually attracts great sailors and delivers big-grin rides worldwide. Why? Because the Hobie 16 is the perfect multi-hull, powerful enough for world champions yet forgiving enough for novices. Its dual-trapeze rig lets you and your crewmember harness its raw power, and its asymmetrically shaped fiberglass hulls reduce weight and provide lift. Fly a hull, and the obsession begins!

Whether your goal is mixed-fleet racing, One Design sailing or simply taunting the local harbormaster, the Wild Cat is your ticket for all-out, hold-on-for-dear-life thrills. The project began when Hobie Cat Europe tasked a group of world-class sailors, naval architects and sailmakers to create a cat capable of dominating F-18 racecourses. High-performance touches include wave-piercing bows, an integrated wing-mast section, high-aspect ratio daggerboards and rudders, dual trapezes, a spinnaker launching and retrieval system, and seriously fast hulls. Hang it out on the wire, and the Hobie Wild Cat will immediately redefine any pre-conceived notions of apparent-wind angles.
