JUNE 2015 ISSUE #4 1 FOOT OF EATON LANE, WEST ISLIP, NEW YORK From the Commodore By Gary Guarino Memorial Day is a day of remembrance where we honor our fallen heroes and celebrate the freedom that they have afforded us. This Memorial Day weekend brought us to the beginning of our 113 th season at the BYC! The weather could not have been more perfect. A great crowd was on hand as we gathered around the flag pole to raise our flags, fire the cannon and open our season. Kevin O’Connell of the Babylon Chorale sang a beautiful rendition of our national anthem. Father Seth of Saint Joseph’s Church in Babylon was on hand to bless the Fleet. Father Seth also had cause to celebrate as he just became a new U.S Citizen, sponsored by our own Brian Maher. After our opening ceremonies we proceeded to the JYC for the introduction of our Junior Board of Directors. Jr. Commodore Laurence Schaefer, Jr. Vice Commodore CJ Galian and Directors McKenzie O’Connell and Jon Colascione. Jr. Commodore Schaefer made a terrific speech outlining what his tasks and plans will be for the upcoming year. Our traditional Champaign toast to the Past Commodore’s was followed by a special ribbon cutting to commemorate the opening of our newly renovated Commodore’s Room. Sue Howell was given the honor of cutting the ribbon and being the first to “officially” see and open the room. The afternoon festivities ended with hot dogs and beer, only to be topped by a terrific opening party that night hosted by our new secretary Kathy Pasquale and her crew.

2 FOOT OF EATON LANE, WEST ISLIP, NEW YORK

There were so many people instrumental in getting the club ready for opening day there just wasn’t enough time to thank them all. So many members came down to carry lumber out to the T-dock, put them in place and nail them down. All the painting, cleaning, landscaping that was done by our volunteer members was so very much appreciated. Peter Capitain has been thanking all those in this and past newsletters who have worked so hard, so please read about all those that helped. As most of you have seen by now, Thomas Brophy has transformed the Commodores Room into quite a magnificent show place. We cannot thank him enough for his hard work, dedication, and creativity. There are two other members that I would also like to personally thank who have worked very hard around the club and on the Commodores Room. It’s very hard to keep track of all the things Jerry Dunnells does for us. From planting shrubs to building bar cabinets, Life Guard stands, refurbishing the ping pong tables, stripping and refinishing doors, painting furniture, and the list goes on. Jerry never seems to stop doing things at the club! I asked John Bell to come up with a plan to properly display all of the past Commodore’s pictures on one wall. As easy as this sounds, John spent many hours working out the details so that the pictures were hung with the utmost of care and that the past commodores received the distinction they so deserve. In addition, John fabricated and welded special decorative brackets for the exposed beams and even took time out to fertilize and lime the lawn! Both Jerry and John have been the “go to guys” if something needs to get done. I thank them both for all that they do and their continuing support.

House By Pete Capitain, Scott Broderick

A coat of paint makes a world of difference, and these members made that difference. Jeff Miller, Scott Broderick, Craig Stueber and Andy Mirchel scraped off the dead paint from the ping pong building walls. Afterwards, Andrew and Krista Hemingway sailed in, primed the walls and the anchor, and then sailed away again. Barbara and Larry Schafer completed the walls with a finish coat. Jeff also trimmed the outside display cases. Scott and Craig went on to paint the porch ceiling. Jim Miravel likes white. Any soiled handrail or previously white detail is now white again. Many thanks to all.

A couple that paints together, stays together! Looks like the Schaefer’s love to paint!!

Ladies Luncheon By Irene Morris Hi ladies! After the horrible winter we had, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to warm weather and the Yacht Club. Our first luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 24th at 12 noon. Sue Howell and her fabulous committee will be our hostess for the last time. Sue has been hostessing the first luncheon for many years. I hope we have a big crowd to say thank you for all your hard work. Please call Kathy Smith at 669-6338 with your reservation. See you on the 26th. The second luncheon is scheduled for July 8th. Sandy Matamala is our hostess once again. Her number is 587-9451.

Entertainment By Phil Berdolt, Lew Colascione, Pete Capitain Opening Day Bella Luna on the Bay Party at the BYC: New members were welcomed to the club by the Board in the Commodore’s room, then all went downstairs to enjoy the first party of the season.

With a team consisting of names like Pasquale, Benzakein, Calamari, and Broderick, culinary excellence was expected – and delivered. Appetizers of Antipasto, Meatballs, Pepperoni bread, Shrimp cocktail, Rice Balls, Stuffed mushrooms, Focaccia (Kristine), and Farfalle Pasta w/Broccoli Rabe & sausage were prepared and passed by the rest of the talented crew, Jimmy Mills, Mary Grace (meatball lady) & John Gleason (our bartender), Natalie & Mario Asaro (rice balls), Susie & Bobby Callaghan, Nancy & John Perone (stuffed mushrooms), Linda Grossman and Kathleen Bisson. All the while, Peach Belini’s flowed freely. All that… and

dinner followed! Eggplant parmigiana, Chicken Bella Luna, Orzo with Peas, and Greek Salad were all delicious. A few background miracles, for which he is famous, were performed by John Calamari in the kitchen. The evening wrapped up with Nutella Cream Puffs, Pizellas, and “let your hair down dancing” to Below Average White Band on the porch. A splendid way to start the season. Please see Taylor or Brian to volunteer. We would really appreciate it! Frostbiting By Larry Schaefer & Dickie Burns It’s time for the annual Frostbiting in the Summer Event. The Committee is going out on a limb and predicting that there will be absolutely no ice on the Bay on Friday, June 19th, so come out and race. First gun will be 7pm. We will get in a few twilight races to be followed by burgers, dogs, and refreshments. If you plan on using a Club boat, please contact me to

reserve it. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come down and participate. If you don't have a boat to sail/crew on, come anyway and we will get you out there. Please let me know if you will be joining us. It will help with planning. Fair Winds The Frostbiting Committee

Admissions By Barbara Schaefer & Ralph Benzakein We have some great new members joining the Club this year! If you see someone new or are introduced to our new members, please give them a warm BYC welcome. We are glad to have them and want them to enjoy the Club and get involved. There is always time to join the Club. To sponsor someone for membership, you must be a member in good standing for two years. Please contact Barbara for an application. We appreciate your care and effort to bring in new members that will both enjoy and contribute to the Club. There seems to be some confusion as to membership policy at the Club. To clarify, the Babylon Yacht Club does not have a “year off” or “sabbatical” policy. If you choose to leave the Club, the procedure to do so

is to resign. Please send your resignation in writing (email is okay) to the Treasurer and Secretary. If you wish to be reinstated at a later date, you may make a request which requires Board approval. Juniors By Carl Galian & William Kern

After a long cold winter, it was great to see everyone at The Opening Day Ceremony and party. We once again hoisted the burgee and boomed the cannon announcing the opening of The Junior Yacht Club. Laurence Schaefer was introduced as the new Commodore. Laurence gave a fantastic speech and welcomed his board of C.J Galian, Mckenzie Oconnell and Johnny Colascione. The first Junior event isn't until after school lets out, but I will be speaking to Laurence and the junior board about adding some fun events.

From the Treasurer By Brian Maher In accordance with the by-laws of the Club, the following practice will be in effect: In order to keep members aware of their obligation to pay dues in a timely manner, the calendar in the newsletter will include the due day (April 1) for membership dues, the date (May 1) that those who are delinquent in paying dues will be published in the newsletter, and the date (June 1) when suspensions or

dismissals for non-paying members will be decided by the Board. This should eliminate any confusion about when payments are expected, names will be posted, and options will be exercised.

BYC Lands End Company Store By Barbara Schaefer Did you know the BYC has a company store at Lands End? You can purchase clothing and many other items with BYC logos embroidered on them. From the Secretary By Kathy Pasquale Wow – what a wonderful Opening Day at the BYC! I must say, it was quite a challenge playing a duel role that day – going from Secretary to Hosting the Bella Luna on the Bay Opening Day Party -- and you know what --I wouldn’t have it any other way……….let the festivities begin!! Please send any changes to personal information or Yacht Registry to: [email protected] If you have any pictures of events at the club, please send them to me, and I will try to use them in the monthly Newsletters when possible.
