Join faculty trumpet artist Rob Murray and collaborative piano artist Yien Wang for an afternoon of exciting and engaging American trumpet repertoire. Featured on the program will be famed trumpeter Rafael Mendez’ signature classic “La Virgen de la Macarena”, “Three Bagatelles” by award-winning composer Fisher Tull, and “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” by the self-proclaimed ‘Bad Boy of Music’ George Antheil. Also of special interest will be Dr. Murray’s performance of “Kaleidosuite”, composed by his high school band director Ray Johnson, well known for his published chamber and wind band music. And, continuing their exploration of new music Dr. Murray will be joined by his wife Lauren Murray on English horn performing as the duo ‘Harmonie del Sur’ as they premier “Salon Music,” written for them by faculty composer Fred Cohen.

Bach, Leonard Bernstein and Jaromir Weinberger. The concert will open with a 25th anniversary performance of Johan de Meij’s “Gandalf” from his Sudler Award-winning Lord of the Rings symphony for band.

All will be under the direction of Paul Hostetter, the Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Activities.

The 2nd half features a band masterwork, H. Owen Reed’s folk song symphony, La Fiesta Mexicana.

Faculty Recital COLUMBUS BRASS

The faculty brass quintet of Columbus State University will perform the fi rst half of the concert in the traditional brass quintet setting, and will be joined by other faculty and our top brass students for a large brass ensemble performance on the second half.

The CSU Philharmonic will be presenting two masterworks on this program starting with Benjamin Britten’s dazzling and passionate Four Sea Interludes from his opera Peter Grimes. Next will be Johannes Brahms timeless Symphony No. 3, featuring rich sonorities and long, gorgeous melodies.

CSU Contemporary EnsembleThe CSU Contemporary Ensemble will begin its 2013-14 season with a performance of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu’s atmospheric and mediative Sacrifi ce. This will be followed by a work by Syracuse based composer Andrew Waggoner’s jazzy Exorcist, a modern work that explores the relationships between guitar, saxophone, piano, and percussion. The program will fi nish with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Shulamit Ran’s driving Double Vision, a tour de force for winds, brass, percussion and piano.

Join internationally acclaimed and distinguished Faculty Artists Alexander Kobrin, piano, Sergiu Schwartz, violin, and Wendy Warner, cello, for an evening of romantic Russian piano trios, featuring Rachmaninov’s Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor and Arensky’s Trio No. 1 in D minor.

Please join us for the concert to kick off the 16th Annual Conductors Workshop at CSU. Two “deans” of wind band conducting in the United States will be joining us—H. Robert Reynolds of the University of Southern California (and Director of Bands emeritus of the University of Michigan), and Allan McMurray, recently retired Director of Bands at the University of Colorado. The program features Strauss’s Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare, then a beautiful chamber work by Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, followed by a rock-n-roll concerto for clarinet inspired by Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog. Maestro Reynolds will lead the Wind Ensemble in his own setting of Morten Laurdisen’s magnifi cent O Magnum Mysterium, before closing the concert with John Mackey’s Redline Tango.

In addition, faculty trumpet professor Dr. Robert Murray will be the soloist for Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.
