MUSIC ON WATER
Opening of the Christopher Summer Festival
LITHUANIAN MILITARY ORCHESTRA
Conductor and artistic director EGIDIJUS ALIŠAUSKAS
Having already taken performers up in a hot-air balloon, and lowered them down into the Devil's
Hole, this year the Christopher Summer Festival will invite you to come see how music sounds
on water! The Neris River will briefly become a concert hall, the Ryga riverboat will become a
stage, and the riverbanks will become your VIP box-seats.
And who else would be bold enough to take on such a challenge if not a powerful woodwind
orchestra, having decided to mark the centenary of the restoration of the country's independence
in an original way together with all of Lithuania and the Lithuanian military. The performance
will begin with the theatrical Water Music suite by Haendel, and the finale will feature the best-
loved modern hits. If you've always thought that the Lithuanian Military Orchestra only plays
marches, think again!
You'll see how Vilnius is filled with music, so make plans for which concert directions to take,
after all, the festival always has a lot to offer!

GYPSY JAZZ
Guitar coryphaeus – Joscho Stephan
Performers:
JOSCHO STEPHAN (solo guitar, Germany)
SEBASTIAN REIMANN (violin, Germany)
SVEN JUNGBECK (rhythm guitar, Germany)
STEFAN BERGER (double bass, Germany)
Even if you've read a hundred times just how wonderful Joscho Stephan is, you'll only really
understand once you've seen him in concert. Come in, sit down and buckle up! A fast and furious
ride into the world of gypsy jazz awaits...
Breath-taking technique (one only a handful of the most famous performers can boast of), inborn
musicality and strong stage presence have earned this guitarist the recognition of both the public
and music critics alike. Guitar grands, such as T. Emmanuel, S. Rosenberg and B. Lagréne, have
gladly participated in recordings of Stephan's latest album Guitar Heroes.
The new coryphaeus of gypsy jazz, titled as the successor of Django Reinhardt himself, has
extended the boundaries of this genre. He tastefully entwines elements of popular, classical and
klezmer music into his explosive compositions, thus arriving at his own characteristic sound.

St Catherine's Church (30 Vilniaus St, Vilnius)
EXCURSION “THE SURROUNDS OF ST CATHERINE'S CHURCH”
The Christopher Summer Festival was one of the first to reveal the architecture of Vilnius to the
capital's residents and guests, organising its concerts in courtyards, squares and churches where
none of the arts had ever set foot before. And this year, it invites you to refamiliarise yourself
with the spaces where the sounds of music may be heard, together with the founder of “Streets
Alive” and best Vilnius city guide title-holder (2016), Albertas Kazlauskas!
• About the excursion. If we were to go back several centuries, we would be walking along the
fringes of Vilnius city. Indeed, the city wall went right near St Catherine's Church, and even
though most of it is long gone, during this excursion we'll be able to touch parts of the surviving
walls and locate the former Vilija Gate. In a pleasant, Renaissance courtyard we'll learn about the
legacy of the Radziwills in Vilnius, discuss the influential Vilnius Baroque school with J. Ch.
Glaubitz at its fore, and take a look at those small details which reveal the different layers of
Vilnius' history in the St Catherine's Church courtyard.
• Duration: approx. 90 min.
No discounts apply.
• Important information. Excursion participants can receive a 15% discount for tickets to that
evening's Christopher Summer Festival concert (15.07 “10 FACES OF THE TRUMPET”). To
receive this discount, kindly contact [email protected]
We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before the start of the excursion to meet the guide
and get ready for the fun that awaits.

10 FACES OF THE TRUMPET
Heavenly sounds and Latin American rhythms
Performers:
Exclusive Deutsche Grammophone artist – FRANCISCO PACHO FLORES (trumpet,
Venezuela)
IEVA DŪDAITĖ (piano)
“Every time Pacho Flores goes out onto the stage, it's a real sensation. The trumpet is his voice,
revealing the performer's essence”, say music critics.
The stops along the performer's concert tour routes testifies to the fact that these are not just
empty words (Carnegie Hall in New York, Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Tokyo Opera Concert
Hall), as does his impressive list of stage partners. It features the names Claudio Abbado, Sir
Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamelis, plus many more.
For his appearance in Vilnius Flores is bringing along ten (!) trumpeters, seeking to give each
work its own sound and different colours: “this is a very flexible instrument. It can sound like the
human voice, the violin or oboe... After all, when playing and listening, what's most important is
to dream”, says the performer.
Pianist Ieva Dūdaitė, who is taking the stage with him, agrees, adding that audiences are in store
for a colourful evening moving to the beat of Latin American rhythms.

CRAZY SAXOPHONES
Cheeky arrangements from Bach to Bernstein
BLATTWERK SAXOPHONE QUARTET (Germany):
HARTMUT SALZMANN (soprano and alto saxophone)
TIMUR ISAKOV (alto saxophone, clarinet)
ALBAN HAUSER (tenor saxophone)
BERND STICH (baritone saxophone)
If you're one of those people that immediately associates the word “quartet” with boredom,
forget this stereotype as fast as you can. The appearances of the Blattwerk saxophonists are
accompanied by smiles and good emotions!
Four professionals could have chosen any path as performers, yet they decided to play together,
spicing up classical music with unexpected improvisational twists. And they do this so
imaginatively, so tastefully, that it wasn't long before they broke out onto the international
festival scene and concert halls, and most importantly – into the audience's hearts.
Cheeky arrangements of well-known works, a dash of irony and four saxophone masters on one
stage – certainly a promise of an excellent summer evening!
Program: J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, L. Bernstein, A. Piazzolla, etc.

A BAROQUE PARTY
Baroque works and contemporary technologies
DUO ROSZKOWSKI (Poland):
ADAM ROSZKOWSKI (violin)
JAN ROSZKOWSKI (cello)
It is a rare violinist who performs Baroque era works that takes to the stage without an orchestra.
But the brothers Adam and Jan Roszkowski manage to reveal the whole grandeur and splendor
of this era together, just the two of them. And if that weren't enough, they enhance these works
written centuries ago with the sounds of the piano, the kotamo (Chinese harp) and even
electronica. The result is standing ovations from the US to Italy. The cosmopolitan nature of the
performers, a perfect grasp of technique and innate musicality allows them to easily cross genre
boundaries and boldly delve into the less well-travelled Baroque. Join them!

The group's name comes from an old Samogitian word, okata, meaning a wish, or desire. It is a
perfect reflection of the musicians' philosophy: “We chose this name because we came together
driven by the immense desire to show people something new. We are glad to have found one
another, because we aim to popularise and preserve folk music – our cultural heritage”.

Performers: VIVIANE (vocals, Portugal)
TÓ VIEGAS (acoustic guitar, Portugal)
FILIPE VALENTIM (keyboards, Portugal)
JOÃO GENTIL (accordion, Portugal)
BRUNO VÍTOR (double bass, Portugal)
The little sparrow for whom the whole world applauded. The legendary Edith Piaf, just as
moving today for her life story as for her songs, which have become part of the musical legacy of
the 20th century.
In 2017 the song La Vie En Rose celebrated its 70th birthday. This anniversary inspired the
charismatic Viviane to put together a concert program featuring hits such as Non, Je Ne Regrette
Rien, Padam Padam, Milord, and of course La Vie En Rose among many others.
Today, the way these songs sound has changed, however they still contain the power of
emotions, memorable melodies and are just as enchanting as always.
According to Viviane, even if you don't speak French and have never seen Marion Cotillard in
the film La Vie En Rose, you'll still know at least one song, and you'll always be able to visit the
ever-enticing city of Paris in your thoughts.

“Włodek Pawlik is a phenomenon. Like Vladimir Horowitz in jazz. You've got to hear him
play!” (North Sea Jazz Magazine).
The most influential music critics have showered this virtuoso Polish pianist and original
composer with their admiration. In 2014, Pawlik's name went down in Polish music history for
being the country's first performer to win a Grammy statuette.
Curious as to what his recipe for success has been, the musician admits he thinks... with his ears:
“Sounds that might appear insignificant, or go by unnoticed, become a huge source of inspiration
for me”. Many impressive works have been born this way: 20 original albums, film music and
joint collaborations with orchestras.
At the Christopher Summer Festival, Pawlik will be appearing in concert with his trio and
promises that the performance will transport you “... somewhere far over the rainbow...”
Program features original compositions by W. Pawlik from the albums Anhelli, America, Night
in Calisia – Grammy Award 2014

Sacred Music Hours.
As the performer says, even the most impressive cathedrals in the world would be empty without
music. This is why for over 30 years he has regularly played in concerts and during feasts,
ceremonies and celebrations at the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.
Paradell Solé is an organ and Gregorian chant professor at the L. Refice Conservatory of Music
in Frosinone and the president of honour of several organ music associations.

Concert dedicated to mark the wedding anniversary of Juozas and Aleksandra Kazickas
Performers: IEVA JUOZAPAITYTĖ (soprano)
RENATA MARCINKUTĖ LESIEUR (organ)
LIUDAS MIKALAUSKAS (bass)
LEOPOLDAS DIGRYS (organ)
“His (Juozas Kazickas') love for his Homeland, expressed as the adamant belief that Lithuania
will eventually be free, was almost as strong as his love for his beloved Alexandra and his whole
family. He did everything in his power to make this dream come true. He was unstoppable. His
energy had no limits. No meeting was ever too boring for him, no obstacle – too large, no idea –
too bold.
Throughout their entire lives, Juozas and Alexandra gave their support to those who needed help
the most. Our parents were exceptionally pious, modest in their ways, generous, and always
thankful to the Almighty for the gifts He gave them: life, a family, friends and the chance to
serve their Homeland”, - this is the warmth and light in which the Kazickas children and family
recall their parents, who would have celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary this year.
Remember them and spend some time with your loved ones as well, all while listening to some
wonderful music.
Program features J. S. Bach, G. Caccini, S. Rachmaninov, A. Raudonikis and others

ANDRZEJ CHOROSIŃSKI (organ, Poland)
We would be hard-pressed to find an organ that hasn't been played by the Polish virtuoso
Andrzej Chorosiński, from the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Adelaide Town Hall, the Aula
Paolo in the Vatican to Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in
Moscow and King's College Chapel in London. These a but a few of the stops along the way on
the impressive concert map of this performer.
Chorosiński's discography, featuring masterful improvisations, consists of over 20 recordings,
while his active cultural activities testify of an enviable collection of awards and medals. The
professor of the Warsaw Chopin and Wroclaw Lipinski music academies is convinced that the
organ must be a magical instrument, capable of transporting us just that little bit further than is
otherwise written in the sheet music. We have no doubt that you'll be assured of this at the
concert of this masterful organist.

Don't forget a bottle of water, comfortable clothing and shoes, and a good mood!

GAIL ARCHER (organ, USA)
A Grammy nominee, this is a performer who has created an impressive international musical
career, performing as the organist at the Vassar College and is the director of the music program
at the Barnard College at Columbia University, also the founder of the women organists'
network, Musforum. This unresting, unbelievably charismatic personality is Gail Archer.
The performer is highly valued for her musicality, the originality of her interpretations and
conceptual programs (incidentally, she is the first American to have performed all of Messian's
works).
For as long as she can recall, Archer has always been attracted to the organ: “I was so
mesmerised by how much potential this instrument had. It can produce so many different
sounds”.
So be ready for a colourful program to see out the summer with some powerful chords.
Program features R. Schumann, J. Shatin, M. Howe and others.

TOMAS CHVEDUK (percussion)

Crazy about rock'n'roll, and fans of the Lithuanian language, they like to dream, encourage
others to think, and appeal for their rebellious souls and stage charisma – they are Basi (lit.
Barefoot).
Especially for the Christopher Festival, the barefoot crew have prepared an exclusive acoustic
program that is sure to reveal these guys' lyrical side. Besides their already well-known and
loved songs, we'll get to hear completely new pieces.
Incidentally, you won't need to mourn over the last moments of summer, as the group's members
are seriously ready to make you dance. Perhaps even barefoot... after all, the Botanical Gardens
are just the place for that sort of thing.
