THOMASHAMPSONFollow the Lieder

JANUARYHIGHLIGHT

Thomas Hampson has an aura befitting a frontiersman. Not the gung-ho backwoods kind, of course, but akin to those tall, strong and decisive Hollywood types who provided America with a feel-good factor about its values and achievements as a nation. Think Gary Cooper, James Stewart and Henry Fonda.

Page 9: National Concert Hall Jan to March Calendar of Events 2014

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees 7

The great baritone, who will perform here on January 29, qualifies on all counts - and particularly in relation to the frontier he challenged and conquered. This was not within his own land but in Europe and specifically Germany where lieder culture is a national obsession and where the name Dieter Fischer- Dieskau is a national icon not too far removed from the Almighty.  During the great singer’s lifetime, Hampson himself referred to him in those terms.

And it was another great German singer who threw down the challenge to Hampson in 1980 when he was an emerging talent with magnetic appeal in San Francisco Opera’s young artists’ programme.

Stellar soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, a judge in a competition, was so impressed by Hampson that she invited him to study with her in Europe the following year. He accepted, but things were happening fast and before he settled there he had hoovered up a few other awards, the most impressive being as a winner in Metropolitan Opera’s nationwide audition finals.

He was later to say: “Elisabeth opened my eyes artistically and spiritually to the choice a singer has in lieder. There are three stages a singer has with songs: the first is during the learning process, when there is such spontaneity. Next there are those few years when everything comes together, and, finally, the period when you think what the hell are we supposed to bring to the piece?”

He soon made an impact in opera houses across Germany and, ironically, had become an international name before he made his US recital debut in New York in 1986 where the New York Times lauded his “good looks, commanding stage presence and, even within the confines of the recital format, an apparently vivid theatricality.”

Another publication referred to “the swoon factor”.  Hampson who stands 6ft 4ins has always had to deal with a star profile and  the sort of media headlines that refer to “Thomas Handsome” or refer to his “Paul Newman blue eyes” or his suitability for an American football frontline  “except that his teeth are too good.”

He eschews this imagery not just in celebrity terms but in the music world itself, abhorring depictions of him as anything other than a singer of songs. This is a subject on which he is unyielding (his single-mindedness has been construed sometimes as arrogance and cussedness). He rejects being categorised as a specialist “in Verdi singing or Wagner singing as it is commonly called’”.

“I will not be a vocal machine, nor will I sacrifice agility and vocal colour for a role,” he said. Hampson’s major recording breakthrough as a singer of songs came in his own country in 1992. His first CD delving into the rich legacy of American folk songs, particularly those of Stephen Foster and the Deep South, became a wildfire hit.  The collection was described as “coming as close as we can to realising the original style of the music.”

Nowadays, his association with the Library of Congress as “the Ambassador of American Song” is an honour he deeply cherishes.

Now in sight of his  60th birthday, the man who grew up in Spokane, Washington, can look back on a career of unrelenting excellence,  achievements, honours, awards, tributes - and, of course, public demand for both concerts and recordings.

In 2005, he founded the Hampsong Foundation, dedicated to the support of the art of song in America and around the world as a means of fostering communication and understanding among cultures.

He is continually researching the poetic depths of the genre and this spurred him in 2011 to open the first Lied Academy as part of the Heidelberger Frühling Festival. Under his artistic direction, and with the participation of renowned visiting artists, Hampson transforms the German city each year into an international place of homage to the Lied.

Elizabeth Schwarzkopf would assuredly be proud of him, but so too would a far lesser known name in the music world, Sister Marietta Coyle, an Irish-American nun who first noticed and then nurtured Hampson’s great talent while he was a college student in Fort Wright, Kentucky. The singer still reveres her memory.

By Dick O’Riordan, classical music columnist with The SundayBusiness Post

Thomas Hampson performs in the National Concert Hall’s International Concert Series with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta on January 29. The lieder programme will particularly feature songs by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf. Tickets ¤25-¤65; tel 01 417 0000 or online www.nch.ie

Gershwin’s pulsating piano concerto thrillingly celebrates American pluralism with a rollercoaster ride blending Dixieland rhythms, Blues melancholy and popular Yiddish themes. Its energy and colour is echoed in John Adam’s feisty foxtrot fantasy and the epic and elemental Second Symphony by Sibelius.

Bach Double Violin Concerto in D minor BWV 1043 Beethoven Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 Brahms Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

International violin superstar Joshua Bell embarks on his first European tour as Music Director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Joshua, who has been a regular collaborator with ASMF began his tenure as Music Director of the esteemed chamber orchestra at the start of this season. Of their wildly successful US tour this past April, The Guardian wrote, “the partnership really came alive…the tension and balance were just electric…proof that Bell’s direction could carry the Academy into the 21st century”.

Often referred to as the “poet of the violin,” Joshua Bell continues to enchant audiences with his breathtaking virtuosity, tone of sheer beauty, and charismatic stage presence. His restless curiosity, passion, universal appeal, and multi-faceted musical interests have earned him the rare title of “classical music superstar.”

“Mr Bell doesn’t stand in anyone’s shadow” The New York Times

Copland Billy the Kid Suite Gerswhin Rhapsody in Blue Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty Suite Ravel Mother Goose (Ma mère l’oye): 5 pièces enfantines

The romance of America’s Wild West and tamed cityscapes is brilliantly captured in Copland’s gloriously colourful Billy the Kid and the jazzy excitement and energy of Gershwin’s ravishing Rhapsody. Tchaikovsky’s ballet score is a deliciously sweet, sugary concoction full of fantasy and wonderment, Ravel’s exquisitely glittering Mother Goose full of feathery fun.

SUNDAY 26 JANUARY 1PM

The world-renowned Kilfenora Céilí Band are seen by many aficionados as the quintessential Irish céilí band. Their core repertoire of dance music, puntuated with an incomparable lift and rhythm, defines an unbroken tradition that dates from the beginning of the twentieth century. Despite this link with the past, their recent recordings and concert performances point to a broadening of the perceived boundaries of their genre. Collaborations with a diverse ranger of song and dance artists, experimentation with repertoire outside of the dance domain and complex harmonic arrangements speak to an ensemble who are pioneering new and exciting performance contexts for the céilí band genre. The creative and imaginative processes at play, clearly demonstrate that tradition is certainly not defined by stasis. While acknowledging and incorporating the past, the Kilfenora thrives on creativity and innovation.

SUNDAY 26 JANUARY 8:30PM

Martin Hayes fiddle • Iarla Ó Lionaird vocals • Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh hardangerDennis Cahill guitar • Thomas Bartlett piano

Martin, Caoimhín, and Dennis have been recognized for extending the Irish and Celtic music traditions – both literally and metaphorically, balancing traditional rigor with an energy that seems entirely new. Thomas has been identified with the independent rock scene for his work with artists as diverse as The National, Glen Hansard, Antony and the Johnsons and old friends Nico Muhly and Sam Amidon. Iarla has sung with projects as far afield as “new music” composer Donnacha Dennehy’s Nonesuch debut and the electronic/world-music hybrid Afro-Celt Soundsystem, the second bestselling artist in the history of Real World.

The music they make is ephemeral yet furious, pairing memorable, yearning melodies with a progressive style. Imagine if alchemical music of a band like Tortoise could appeal to your old Irish uncle – and you have an idea of what The Gloaming are after.

The Gloaming return to the scene of their début show to make the release of their eponymous album in January 2014 on Brassland and Real World Records.

James Vincent McMorrow

FEBRUARYHIGHLIGHT

Page 35: National Concert Hall Jan to March Calendar of Events 2014

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees 33

“I take what I do very seriously, and also very single-mindedly,” James Vincent McMorrow told me a while back. “The reason I do the things I do is all borne out of never wanting to blame anyone else. My instinct, therefore, is that if things don’t work out then I can live with myself – the fear is to blame someone else.”

Many are called but few are chosen, and even those that are selected from the immense swell of contenders, freeloaders and wannabes (and it isn’t always easy to tell them apart, let me tell you) are sometimes not worth your attention. There are, however, certain people who are not only worth your consideration but also your time and – in these belt-tightening years – your money. So it’s reassuring to say that, for all the right reasons, James Vincent McMorrow is a safe bet.

It’s fair to say that four years ago very few people who now love his music had heard of him. In February 2010, he released his debut album, Early In The Morning. It was a soft delivery, the kind of record that is produced and received with little fanfare outside of a coterie of fans that are no doubt conflicted about whether they should tell the world how great it is, or whether they should really keep it to themselves. But all good music finds a home, whether it’s the overused CD player in your car, the slightly dusty hi-fi unit in your kitchen or your well-thumbed iPod, and so slowly, quietly, Early In The Morning found its listenership. And slowly, surely, James Vincent McMorrow discovered his audience.

It was, in the beginning, a challenge for McMorrow. I recall an early gig of his – he was playing support to an elder lemon American musician in a tiny venue in a Kilkenny pub. You could tell the audience wanted to be appreciative of one of their own, but the end result of a short, shifty set was that they seemed let down by McMorrow’s relative inexperience. Some months later, in another small venue in another Irish town, it was as if the singer-song-writer had gone through some creative

duckling-to-swan transformation. This time around McMorrow was very much in control, the performance accurately delivered and timed. And the songs just kept getting better and better, almost as if they had grown into their silky skins as much as McMorrow had increased in confidence. What seemed like fledgling tunes several months previously had morphed into songs of rare delicacy and strength, sung in a voice that referenced classic soul vocalists such as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye.

Something was in the air, the ether, whatever you want to call it. Either McMorrow had upped his game, or perhaps the game had come to him and wimped out in submission? Whatever the reason, it came as little surprise that Early In The Morning landed on the shortlist of the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of 2010. McMorrow didn’t claim that particular gong (Two Door Cinema Club’s Tourist History managed that feat), but being so close to it arguably laid the foundations for subsequent years of honing his stagecraft and fine-tuning his songs.

And didn’t those four years pass without so much as a by-your-leave? Here we are now, right at the point of release of McMorrow’s second album, Post Tropical. It is yet another triumph of creativity. It is also as different to Early In The Morning as it can get. If the debut was stripped bare, the new one has a full set of clothes on.

“It’s warm and beautiful,” says McMorrow of his new album, “but something is there that’s maybe not quite what you think it is. I figured that if people were going to define the record for me, I might as well get in front of them.”

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW

TUESDAY 4 WEDNESDAY 5 THURSDAY 6 FEBRUARY 8PM

Support 8.15pm. James Vincent McMorrow on stage at 9pm.

James Vincent McMorrow celebrates the release of his new record Post Tropical with his first Dublin headline shows since 2011.

James Vincent McMorrow’s acclaimed debut album Early in the Morning reached number 1, went platinum and picked up a Choice Music Prize nomination upon its release in 2010. Along the way, there were shows everywhere from the Royal Festival Hall to Later...with Jools Holland, and a breakout hit in the charity cover of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love.

Post Tropical - James’ sophomore record - is a stunning piece of work; a step forward immediately apparent on album opener and first single Cavalier - a brooding twist on the Slow-Jam, which builds quietly from hushed keys and hand-claps to soaring brass, drums and McMorrow’s idiosyncratic falsetto.

McMorrow’s sometimes-surreal songwriting holds each element in place, on an album which he wrote, produced, and played virtually every instrument.

James Vincent McMorrow is a Resident Artist of the National Concert Hall

KODO ONE EARTH TOUR 2014: LEGENDPERSPECTIVES 2014

SATURDAY 22 AND SUNDAY 23 FEBRUARY 8PM

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Kodo return to Dublin with their new show, Legend.

Since the group’s debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo has given over 3400 performances on all five continents, spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third resting and preparing new material on Sado Island.

In Japanese the word “Kodo” conveys two meanings: Firstly, ‘heartbeat’ the primal source of all rhythm. The sound of the great taiko is said to resemble a mother’s heartbeat as felt in the womb, and it is no myth that babies are often lulled asleep by its thunderous vibrations. Secondly, read in a different way, the word can mean “children of the drum,” a reflection of Kodo’s desire to play the drums simply, with the heart of a child.

Following the success of Essential Classics in September 2013, the journey continues through the most adored classical music of all time. With both the power ballad All by Myself and Sinatra’s Full Moon and Empty Arms deriving from its themes, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is an enduring romantic favourite. This tantalizing programme also includes Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Barber’s moving Adagio for Strings, Stravinsky’s scintillating The Firebird, Debussy’s Prelude a l’apres midi d’un Faune and more.

Guy Bovet Hamburger Totentanz No 3 Franck Grand Pièce Symphonique

The organ lends itself to gothic phantasmagoria: Bovet’s skeletal rattlings are every bit as convincing as those in Saint Saëns’ Danse Macabre, heard later in the RTÉ NSO’s evening’s main concert. The contribution to symphonic form made by Berlioz in his Symphonie fantastique being performed by the RTÉ NSO at 8pm is mirrored in Franck’s seminal work which paved the way for the great symphonies of Widor and Vierne.

What exactly is contemporary music? That’s a

question full of problems, issues, conflicts and particularly sharp thorns. Most people will have a different answer and most people will probably be right. Whatever the outcome, there is little doubt that Perspectives 2014, the National Concert Hall’s flagship series of contemporary music performances by a wide range of artists from various disciplines, will do what something of this nature must: start conversations, get people thinking, increase awareness of what actually constitutes boundaries and parameters, and how these can be stretched without causing undue annoyance (or, God forbid, offence). Listed here are the highlights of Perspectives 2014, covering a variety of events at the National Concert Hall throughout the year.

Page 57: National Concert Hall Jan to March Calendar of Events 2014

January 25/26: Tradition NowThe past referencing the future or vice versa? Tradition Now explores new and pliable territories in the genre with a series of concerts featuring The Gloaming, June Tabor’s Quercus, Lau, At First Light, the Kilfenora Céií Band, Pádraig Rynne’s Notify and Mossy Nolan. Expect a wide-ranging, mind-expanding mixture of (occasionally) odd bedfellows connecting, if not challenging, the dots between old and new, fragile and firm. (Please note that June Tabor’s ECM Quercus project, making its Irish debut, will be performed at the Pepper Canister Church, Saturday January 25.)

February 22/23: KODO: One Earth Tour: LegendJapanese drum exponents Kodo (which numbers over 25 performers, male and female, ranging in age from early 20s to early 60s) reinterpret and preserve traditional Japanese performing arts, notably through expert use of the taiko, the traditional Japanese drum, but also through traditional dance and vocal performances. The ensemble’s new show,Legend, makes its debut in Ireland, and arrives garlanded with accolades from its recent international tour.

March 26: Pantha du Prince & The Bell LaboratoryGerman electronic music producer and DJ Henrik Weber has proficiently involved himself in house music and ambient techno, but his recent collaboration with the Bell Laboratory (Elements Of Light) is a different ballgame (bellgame, even?) altogether. Expect a lush, driving and often hypnotic symphony for electronics, percussion and bell carillon (a three-tonne instrument that comprises 50 bronze bells).

June 14: Wayne Shorter QuartetAmerican jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter - a multiple Grammy winner and one of the most acclaimed jazz artists of the past 50 years – has performed with a who’s-who of jazz musicians, including Art Blakely, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. He is, perhaps, best known for founding 1970s pre-eminent jazz-fusion group, Weather Report, as well as collaborating with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan.

December 13/14: Brassland @ NCHBrassland is an artist-operated record label overseen by The National’s twin brothers, Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and writer Alec Hanley Bernis. The label’s tagline is ‘real music from real people’, and the label acts visiting for these shows include This Is The Kit, and Buke and Gase. The weekend will include a Megafaun and Fight The Big Bull presentation of Sounds of the South, featuring Justin Vernon and Frazey Ford.

In this, his 80th birthday year, the distinctive, radical and uncompromising internationally acclaimed composer Harrison Birtwistle pays a rare visit to Dublin to celebrate one of his most iconic works. Earth Dances (1985/6) is a study of orchestral texture – it is conceived in strata, like layers of rock.  The composer will talk through a live analysis of his work on stage with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra before a full performance of the 40 minute work is given.

Each of Birtwistle’s works is a stage in a continuous process of growth, and the quintet is by no means unusual in taking up musical ideas from earlier pieces. Golijov’s intention in writing the piece, Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind, was to fuse thematic elements of the Jewish klezmer tradition with the forms of the string quartet as found in Brahms and Mozart. This concert will include the Jerome Hynes Young Composers’ Award 2013 New Work.

SATURDAY 8 MARCH 8PMMAIN AUDITORIUM

Kraftwerk UncoveredGlass Music in Changing Parts

A live reworking of Kraftwerk music by J Peter Schwalm, with film by Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish

Following their highly successful Brian Eno/Apollo tour, which came to Dublin in 2010, Icebreaker are turning their focus on another contemporary icon – Kraftwerk.

German artist J. Peter Schwalm has created a new work for Icebreaker based on material from a range of Kraftwerk tracks, articulating their journey from experimental krautrock band to international icons.

The show references an earlier era of technological and industrial innovation, and the experimental or avant-garde film and sound work that came as a result, presenting at the same time a nostalgic vision of a ‘future’ now passed, and a modern reworking of a lost utopian dream.

Michael Gordon Rewriting Beethoven’s 7th Gerald Barry Chevaux de Frise Claude Vivier Lonely Child

“Each piece on this concert has a radical take on what is meant by the “orchestra”, from Michael Gordon’s devilish yet profound vandalism of Beethoven’s 7th which reveals different possibilities with material known very well to us, to Gerald Barry’s walls of sound in Chevaux de Frise. Claude Vivier’s absolutely original and stunningly beautiful Lonely Child for soprano and orchestra anchors the concert. This emotional, moving piece treats the orchestra as if it were a resonator, with divisi strings supplying ghostly “additions of frequencies” over the melodic soprano line.” Donnacha Dennehy, curator

AN EVENING WITH DÓNAL LUNNY AND FRIENDS

SUNDAY 16 MARCH 8PM

The catalogue of work touched by the hand of Dónal Lunny over five decades is something vast. To summarise the details, significance and underlying narrative of the work would be a monolithic task in itself. And to attempt to weave each strand of his career into a picture that makes perfect sense would be more difficult again. In this first of a number of Lunny-curated events planned for 2014, our host examines his past, present and future. Joining him to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Festival will be long-time co-conspirator Andy Irvine. Together Lunny and Irvine gelled in the folk clubs of Dublin and joined Christy Moore and Liam O’Flynn in the early 1970s for the culture-shifting band that was Planxty. From there they simultaneously furrowed their own paths but a musical magnetism drew them back together intermittently to work with Paul Brady and projects such as Mozaik and LAPD. Dónal will also invite the acclaimed Irish fiddler Zoë Conway to bring her multi-dimensional virtuosity to the event and revisit his recent triumvirate with the prodigious Pádraig Rynne on concertinas and Breton flautist Sylvain Barou.

PANTHA DU PRINCE & THE BELL LABORATORY: ELEMENTS OF LIGHTPERSPECTIVES 2014

WEDNESDAY 26 MARCH 8PM

Henrik Weber aka German techno minimalist Pantha Du Prince and Oslo music collective The Bell Laboratory perform their world-acclaimed collaborative symphony, Elements of Light in an Irish exclusive.

A sonic continuation of his 2010 album Black Noise, Elements of Light is a fascinating look at the interaction between classical and modern music. Sounds and structural characteristics from house and minimal music, jazz and new music, gamelan and western sacred music interweave and are organized into a complex musical texture.

Elements Of Light is a symphony for electronics, bell carillon, percussion – and his most ambitious attempt yet to drive the formal language of techno outside its own confines

This mesmerising performance uses organically reconstructed electronic textures and superb live percussion including the three tonne Bell Carillon to explore the inherent limitations and possibilities of the bell as an instrument.
