3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN21st Season l St. Lawrence ’84

Don Vaughan enters his 21st year as head coach at Colgate with the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 328-331-75. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 19 appear-ances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I hon-orees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. His commitment to success is not limited to the ice, as Vaughan has con-tinually demonstrated the importance of education to his student-athletes. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, Vaughan coached his team into the national rankings once again after a six-game winning streak in December and into January of 2013. He tutored a pair of ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team honorees and an ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year Finalist. In 2011-12, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in De-cember. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationally-ranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raid-ers finished in the top four in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like the 2008-09 season. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous sea-

son by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with seven-consecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were de-termined by one goal or fewer. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC Champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties against arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a breakout season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as All-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, including an upset over Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raid-ers earned all-league recognition, includ-ing Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from post-season competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final rank-ing of No. 9 in the USA Today/American

Hockey Magazine national poll. Vaughan, who led his team to 24 victories, was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year and received the Howard Hartman Award as Colgate’s Coach of the Year. He recorded his first 20-win season as Colgate’s head coach during the 1994-95 campaign. With 20 victories, he became the first coach in school history to win 20 or more games in a season within his first three years. For this accomplishment, Vaughan was honored by his Colgate peers with the Howard Hartman Award. Vaughan began his coaching career as a player/coach with the Enschede Lions of the Dutch Profes-sional Hockey League during the 1984-85 season. He returned to the United States the following year to serve as a graduate assistant coach at St. Law-rence University during the 1985-86 campaign. He worked as an as-sistant coach at St. Lawrence under Joe Marsh for the next two seasons, specializing in the areas of penalty-kill and power-play strategy. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and head coach of the junior varsity team. During his first season as a full-time assistant, the Saints participated in the NCAA tournament for the first time since Vaughan was a player. In 1988, Vaughan helped coach St. Lawrence to the ECAC regular season and tournament titles. The Saints advanced to the NCAA championship game, where they lost to Lake Superior State in over-time. Vaughan left St. Lawrence in 1988 to become an assistant coach at Cornell Uni-versity under Brian McCutcheon. Vaughan coached Cornell’s special teams and coordinated recruiting and team travel. The Big Red reached the ECAC final four during both of Vaughan’s two seasons with the program. Following the 1989-90 season, Vaughan returned to St. Lawrence for his second assistant coaching stint under Marsh. Vaughan extended his personal string of ECAC final four appearances to six by helping the Saints to back-to-back trips to the Boston Garden. In 1992, Vaughan was part of his second ECAC tournament championship and made his third trip to the NCAA tournament. In all, Vaughan has appeared in 10 ECAC Hockey final fours and five NCAA tournaments during his 21-year college coaching career. Vaughan played three seasons of varsity hockey for St. Lawrence from 1981 to 1984 after earning All-American status during his only season at Canton College. While with the Saints, Vaughan played in 96 games at the center position. In 1983, he helped his team to an NCAA tournament appearance and a first-place

finish in the ECAC’s West Region. Vaughan finished his career at St. Lawrence with 41 goals and 49 assists for 90 points. He graduated from St. Lawrence in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, and later earned a master’s degree in general studies from St. Lawrence in 1987. He is a member of the American Hockey Coaches Association and is a former chair of that group’s Division I Committee. He was also a member of the NCAA Rules Committee from 1998 through 2002. He currently serves on the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Committee. In 2004, Vaughan was presented with a Silver Puck Award by Colgate’s Sil-ver Puck Club for his work with the Raider hockey program. In 2005, he was one of two non-alumni to receive a Maroon Citation for his record of service to the university. Vaughan stepped away from the ice during the 2003-04 academic year to serve as the university’s interim athletics director. Under his leadership, Colgate achieved remarkable success. Five teams won conference championships, six coaches were honored as league coaches of the year, and the Raider football team advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. Vaughan continues to serve Colgate in an admin-istrative capacity as an assistant athletics director. An active member of the Hamilton community, Vaughan hosts a hockey school at Starr Rink every summer. In ad-dition, he is often a guest speaker at area youth hockey events. A native of Almonte, Ontario, Vaughan resides in Hamilton with his wife, Mariel, and they have two children, Mark (23) and Maria (21).

THIS WEEK: MARIUCCI CLASSIC Colgate takes its longest road trip of the season with a visit to Minne-sota for the Mariucci Classic on Jan. 3 and 4. The Raiders take on top-ranked Minnesota on Friday night and then face either Rensselaer or No. 2 Ferris State on Saturday. Colgate has already played RPI and the Bulldogs this season and has a 1-2-0 mark, which included a win over Ferris State in the second game of the year.

NEXT UP: OLD RIVAL VISITS STARR RINKThe Raiders are back home next weekend with Vermont coming to Starr Rink for a single game on Jan. 11. The Catamounts were an old member of ECAC Hockey before moving onto Hockey East. Vermont jumped into the national polls this week at No. 20.

FAMILIAR FOES AT CLASSICColgate has already faced two of the three other teams at the Mari-ucci Classic as the Raiders split with now No. 2 Ferris State at home on the first weekend of the season. After a 7-4 defeat in the season opener, Colgate responded with one its best games with a 1-0 win as Eric Mihalik pushed aside 25 shots for his fourth career shutout. The Raiders took on the Engineers on its first road conference weekend of the year and were beaten by RPI at Houston Fieldhouse.

LAST MINUTE WINIn their last game of 2013, the Raiders hosted the Russian Red Stars and needed three goals in the third period to come away with a 3-2 win on New Year’s Eve. Colgate scored all three goals in a seven-min-ute span and the comeback was complete with Tylor Spink scoring the gamewinner with 19 seconds left.

POWERING UP THE POWER PLAYColgate has had its struggles on the power play recently, but got its offense going with the extra skater against the Red Stars. The Raiders scored twice on the man advantage and both goals came at critical times in the game. Kyle Baun and Tylor Spink scored the two power play goals and it was a good showing as the Raiders look to improve in the area during the second half of the season.

BORKOWSKI BRIGHT SPOTMike Borkowski finished off the UMass series with his first career multi-goal game in the 3-2 loss on Dec. 15. The sophomore second liner has already equaled his point total from his rookie year with 17 and he has posted a career-high five multi-point games. Two of his multi-point games have been three point outings against St. Cloud State and Union.

DOMINATING CLASSAfter leading the team in total points last season, the sophomore class has been putting the goals and assists on the board once again. The Class of 2016 has recorded 79 points out of the 121 scored this season, which is 65 percent of the scoring output. They have scored 32 of the 45 goals this year and all top five scorers for Colgate are sophomores. All seven sophomore skaters have tallied points this season.

KULEVICH CONTRIBUTINGThe rookie blueliner is sneaking in as one of Colgate’s top defense-men with six assists, including one against Cornell on Dec. 7 in the Raiders’ second goal of the game. He has points in five of the last 11 games and has seven blocked shots in the last three games and 25 total this year, which is a team best.

FINN SUCCEEDINGRookie netminder Charlie Finn had his longest unbeaten streak of the season snapped against UMass. Finn had a three-game streak going, including the 2-2 tie at Cornell on Dec.7. He made 38 stops against the Minutemen on Dec. 14, but was on the wrong end of a 2-0 game. He had 13 saves in the first and third periods. He has won four of his last seven starts.

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

AUDI TOP ROOKIEThe Raiders had their first weekly honor after the sweep at SLU and Clarkson as Emilio Audi was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. Audi had a goal and two assists. He posted a goal and assist for a season-high two points in the come-from-behind win over Clarkson. Audi has five points on two goals and three assists in 10 games and is second behind Jake Kulevich for the rookie lead.

SPINK CHIPPING INTylor Spink just needed to warm up his engine over the first eight games. The points leader from last year has regained his form from 2012-13 with 11 points on seven goals and four helpers. Too bad the statistics don’t count from the Rus-sian Red Stars game as he factored in all three goals with two goals and an assist in the win, including the gamewinner with 19 seconds left on his 21st birthday. The power play has been good to Tylor as he is second on the team with five points with the extra man.

WILSON HITS MILESTONE Wilson tallied an assist against Union on Nov. 8 for his 50th career point. He has the highest career numbers on the Raid-ers with 19 goals and 31 assists. He is coming off back-to-back 23-point seasons.

CORNWALL SOUTHThe Raiders have done a lot of their recruiting in Cornwall the last couple of years, and it has resulted in five players mak-ing the trip to Hamilton. Anthony Sanniti joined the Spink twins, Kyle Baun and Mike Borkowski as Cornwall alums on the team. Four of Colgate’s top scorers came from Cornwall and they have combined for 53 points this season.

RAIDERS PICK 9TH IN BOTH POLLSECAC Hockey released it preseason polls on Sept. 24 and the Colgate men’s hockey team was slated to finish ninth in the media and coaches’ polls. This year looks wide open for the league with six different teams earning first-place votes in the

coaches poll with Yale leading the way with four votes, fol-lowed by Rensselaer, Quinnipiac and Union with two votes. The media poll also featured a lot of parity with Rensselaer earning the top spot with 18 first-place votes.

GOULAKOS MAKES RETURN AS CAPTAINAfter a roller coaster of the season last year, junior Spiro Goulakos is back in a Colgate uniform and will be the team’s captain for the upcoming season. The defenseman was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma during the second half of the season and left the team for treatment and missed a total of 10 games. He did come back for the postseason, playing at St. Lawrence in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament. He went through treatment in the spring and summer in his hometown of Montreal and was told he was in remission prior to coming back to campus this fall. Despite missing 10 games, he tallied a career-high 18 points on seven goals and 11 helpers, with four of the goals coming on the power play as the point man on the top unit.

GETTING YOUNGERWith a new season, comes new faces and this year, the Raid-ers welcome 10 new skaters to the squad. There are nine rookies and one transfer, Brooks Herrington, who comes to Colgate after two seasons at Vermont. With the addition of the nine rookies, Colgate has 17 sophomores and freshmen on this year’s team with only two seniors. The Raiders will rely on these new players a lot, especially on defense with the graduation of Jeremy Price, Thomas Larkin, Nathan Sinz and Mike Leidl. The sophomore class got significant playing time in 2012-13 and showed a lot of promise and that will help bring along the newcomers.

WILSON NAMED ASSISTANT CAPTAINJoining Goulakos with a letter on his sweater is Joe Wilson, who will be the assistant captain for the Raiders in 2013-14. The junior has had a great career so far for the Raiders. His freshman year he was with the two of the top scorers in the NCAA on the same line and managed 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. He equaled his output last season with 23 points on eight goals and 13 assists.

POWER PLAY IN TACKThe Colgate power play, which was second in ECAC Hockey at 22.7 percent returns most of the top two units. With Goulakos back in uniform, the top unit remains in tack. That unit last season, which was made up of four rookies and a sophomore accounted for 24 of Colgate’s 35 goals scored on the power play. Baun and Tylor Spink were the leaders with seven apiece. Tyson Spink and Goulakos netted four, while Mike Borkowski had two. The second unit will take a hit with

TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULEThis year’s schedule includes 12 non-conference games, including two-game sets at home against Ferris State, UMass and St. Cloud State of the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The Huskies join Yale and Quinnipiac for teams in the NCAA Frozen Four that are on the Raiders’ schedule. Colgate will face six teams during the year that are in this week’s USCHO.com National Poll.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERSTop-ranked Minnesota enters its home tournament with a 12-2-2 mark and a 3-0-1 record in the inaugural year of the Big Ten Conference. The Gophers have gone unbeaten in their last four games and in eight of their last nine. They are coming off a three-point weekend at Michigan State with a 3-2 win on Dec. 7 after a 2-2 tie the night before. Minnesota has done it with a struggling power play at 15.6 efficiency. The defense is the strong point as the Gophers have outscored their op-ponents 63-34 in 16 games. They are in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense and defense.

Sam Warning leads the way with 20 points on the year with five goals and 15 assists. Seth Ambroz is tops in goals with eight on the year. Justin Kloos is second on the team in points with 17. The top two scorers are not NHL draft picks, while the Gophers have 15 on the roster. One of those picks is goalie Adam Wilcox, while has started 15 of the 16 games played for Minnesota. He has an 11-2-2 mark with a 2.17 goals against average. He has also posted a .923 save percentage and has one shutout.

SERIES HISTORYThe Raiders and Gophers have faced off six times previ-ously with Minnesota winning all six matchups. The most interesting game of the series came in the early 70s with the teams going to overtime and the Gophers winning a wild 7-6 game.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGSFerris State has been on a roll since the Raiders last saw the Bulldogs on the first weekend of the season. They have the longest unbeaten streak in the country at 15 with a 12-0-3 mark. The run has put them as the No. 2 team in the nation. Special teams have been great for Ferris State with a 21.7 percent success rate on the power play and have killed off 85 percent of opponents extra man chances. The Bulldogs are fourth in the nation in combined special teams. Garret Thompson leads the Bulldogs with 20 points on a team-high nine goals and 11 assists. He also leads the squad with 13 points in conference play. Three of his nine goals have come on the power play, which is tied with Kyle Schempp for the most on the team. Jason Brinkley is tops in assists with 12. In goal, C.J. Motte is unbeaten at 14-0-3 and his 17 starts and has two shutouts. He has allowed 37 goals and has a 2.15 goals against average. He has made 473 saves so far and has a .927 save percentage.

SERIES HISTORYFerris State leads the series at 7-5-1 after the teams split at Starr Rink in the first weekend of the season. Colgate earned its first shutout in the series to halt a three-game winning streak by the Bulldogs. The teams could be facing off for the 14th time since their first meeting back in 1999.

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERSRensselaer enters the tournament with an 8-6-4 record overall and has spent some time in the national rankings this season. The Engineers are 3-3-3 in league play and have gone unbeaten in three of its last four games and played the USA Under-18 National Team on Dec. 15 and earned a 2-1 win. They have no problems scoring goals as they have averaged 3.44 goals per game after 18 games. Ryan Haggerty has been dominating on the scoresheet all season with 18 goals, which leads the nation by five goals. He has a total of 26 points. He leads ECAC Hockey with eight power play goals and he has also posted four gamewinners. Brock Higgs is second on the team with 20 points on 12 goals and eight assists. Jacob Laliberte has a team-high 13 helpers. In goal, Scott Diebold has earned 16 starts and has a 7-5-4 mark, while Jason Kasdorf is 1-1-0 on the year. Diebold has a 2.17 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

SERIES HISTORYRensselaer and Colgate could be playing for the 120th time on Friday night since 1915-16 and this series is the oldest in Raiders hockey history as it stretches 98 years. Colgate has played more games against Clarkson and Cornell, but those two series began in 1927. Colgate’s first ever game was against the Engineers in 1915-16 with the Raiders winning 6-1. It was the only game of the season. With Rensselaer earning an early season win over the Raiders, the Engineers lead the series, 60-56-3.
