grade or the Cold Steel® Tanto, we tested seven dierent grades o steel including Shiro 2, V-SP-2, 10A, 440C, VG-10,ATS 34, and VG-1. Physical testing or sharpness, edge re-tention, point strength, shock, and ultimate blade strengthshowed that while many o the steels had increased perormance in one or two testing categories, only one, VG-1,showed the greatest perormance increases in the mostcritical categories. 4116 KruPP STainLeSS4116 is a ne grained, stainless steel made by

ThyssenKrupp in Germany and is used or hygienic applica-tions (medical devices and the pharmaceutical industry)and ood processing which make it a superb material orkitchen cutlery. The balance o carbon and chromium con-tent give it a high degree o corrosion resistance and alsoimpressive physical characteristics o strength and edgeholding. Edge retention in actual cutting tests exceededblades made o the 420 and 440 series o stainless steels.Other alloying elements contribute to grain renementwhich increase blade strength and edge toughness and alsoallow or a ner, sharper edge.

auS 8a STainLeSS The words “stainless steel” are misleading, because,

in act, all steel will stain or show discoloration i let

in adverse conditions or a sucient time. Steel ismade “stainless” by adding Chromium and reducing itsCarbon content during the smelting process. There is aserious perormance trade-o with stainless steel. As theChromium increases and the Carbon decreases, the steelbecomes more “stainless”. But, it also becomes more andmore dicult to sharpen, and the edge-holding potentialis seriously impaired. This is usually why most stainlessknives are rarely razor-sharp and quickly lose what littleedge they have.

In contrast, at Cold Steel ® we use AUS 8A Stainless, ahigh carbon, low chromium steel that has proven itsel to bethe ultimate compromise between toughness and strength,edge holding, and resistance to corrosion.

San Mai iii®

Our San Mai III® blades are comprised o three layers o lami-nated steel. Laminated construction is important because it al-lows dierent grades o steel to be combined in a single blade.A simple way to think o this type o construction is to imaginea sandwich: The meat center is hard, high carbon steel and thepieces o bread on either side are the lower-carbon, tough sidepanels. The edge o the blade should be hard to maximize edgeholding ability, but i the entire blade was hard it could be dam-aged during the rigors o battle. For ultimate toughness thebody o the blade must be able to withstand impact and lateralstresses. Toughness is generally associated with “sotness”and “fexibility” in steel, so that, surprisingly, i a blade is made“tough” the edge won’t be hard enough to oer superior edgeholding. San Mai III® provides a blade with hard (higher carbon)steel in the middle or a keen, long lasting edge and tougher(lower-carbon) steel along the sides or fexibility.

1055 Carbon1055 steel is right on the border between a medium and a high

carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.50%-0.60% andwith manganese between 0.60%-0.90% as the only other com-ponent. The carbon content and lean alloy make this a shallowhardening steel with a quenched hardness between Rc 60-64depending on exact carbon content. These combination o ac-tors make this one o the toughest steels available because,when quenched, it produces a near saturated lathe martensitewith no excess carbides, avoiding the brittleness o higher car-bon materials. This steel is particularly suited to applicationswhere strength and impact resistance is valued above all otherconsiderations and will produce blades o almost legendary

toughness.

SK-5 HigH CarbonSK-5 is the Japanese equivalent o American 1080, a high car-

bon steel with carbon between 0.75%-0.85% and 0.60%-0.90%manganese. As quenched, it has a hardness near Rc 65 andproduces a mixture o carbon rich martensite with some smallun-dissolved carbides. The excess carbide increases abrasionresistance and allows the steel to achieve an ideal balance o very good blade toughness with superior edge holding ability.Due to these characteristics, this grade o steel has been usedtraditionally or making a variety o hand tools, including chis-els and woodcutting saws, and has stood the test o time anduse over many years in many countries.

The stop pin receives all positive pressure (pressure on the cutting edge) and transers itinto the handle rame and liners where it can be more eectively absorbed.

digging, piercing or even abusive spine whacks are redistributed be-cause the stop pin receives the orward pressure rom the rocker andtransers it into the liners protecting the rocker and its pivot rom ailing.

SeLf a djuSTing...Finally, outside o keeping the lock ree rom the buildup o pocket

lint in the mechanism, the Tri-Ad ® lock requires very little mainte-nance. It’s designed to be sel adjusting, in the sense that, over timeas parts begin to wear, the Tri-Ad’s® design will allow it to adapt sothe locking bar always wedges deeper in the lock channel between thestop pin and the shoulder o the precision cut tang notch. rajaH® ii: The Rajah® II, designed by Andrew Demko, approximates the eel and het o a xedblade Kukri. For example, its broad, downward curved blade exhibits the best o a Kukri’s characteris-tics as its unique shape presents the thin hollow ground edge at just the right angle so it naturally“bites” deep instead o bouncing or skidding o a target. And, its point is thick, wide, and sharpenough to pierce the toughest targets.

The handle o the Rajah ® II also shares some o the contours o a xed blade Kukri with theaddition o strategically placed curves and nger grooves. T hese eatures will acilitate 3grip options. One; very close to the cutting edge where you can really “choke up” on thehandle or ne or delicate work. Two; by the middle or ordinary cutting chores. Paradox ® SerieSBalisong or Butterfy knives, with their revolving handles, and strong locking mechanisms, have

had a certain mystique since they were rst popularized in the early 1980’s. They were beguilinglysimple in construction, looked a little intimidating in a user’s hand, were relatively inexpensive, andthere were many fashy ways to open them with a ew det turns o the wrist. In short, they were aknie industry success story.

There was just one downside. In the early 1990’s, United States Customs outlawed the importa-tion o all butterfy knives under, what can only be assumed to be, an arbitrary and unreasonableinterpretation o the Switchblade Act. Many U.S. states soon ollowed suit including Caliornia,where mere possession o a Butterfy knie is a FELONY.

But Cold Steel has produced a completely legal version o the butterfy knie that we call TheParadox®. Available in two sizes, it’s designed rom the ground up to specically mimic a traditionalBalisong or Butterfy knie in every respect but one – it can’t be opened with one hand! That’s right,the Paradox® is not a switchblade, gravity knie, or assisted opener and can’t be opened withoutthe use o both hands. So, while it looks and eels like a classic Butterfy knie, it isn’t. It’s a legalBalisong!

Its twin handles eature two integral springs that are similar to a conventional slip joint older.They are designed to rotate 180 degrees around the blade’s unique split tang and use strong oppos-ing spring tension to lock the blade open or hold it rmly closed. Kobun®

The Kobun® is a lightweight Tanto styled bootknie. It takes its namesake rom the Japanese Yakuza, or martial underworld, where the word“Kobun” is a kind o indicator o rank that suggeststhe word “soldier”, or one who takes orders romhis “Oyabun” or boss. It’s a tting name or a knielike the Kobun®, which was eectively designed tobe “a good soldier”.

In prole it closely resembles our Master Tanto,but it sports a thinner blade, and that supports itsmain unction; to be a light weight boot knie.

Like our Tantos, it eatures the Tanto styled reinorced point. This contrasts sharply with most bootknives on the market today which are notorious ortheir paper thin points which are easily broken orbent. we have continually been rening our designs, discarding eatures that didn’t perorm aswell as we would have liked and enhancing those that did. These blades, and the wealth o experience that has gone into their manuacture, have paid o handsomely or Cold Steelas they have generated quite a ollowing among law enorcement and military personnelaround the world. This is because they oer “big knie” cutting and pierci ng potential ina very compact, easily portable size and, unlike a revolver or semi automatic pistol, theynever break, malunction, or run out o ammunition.

Designed by Lynn C. Thompson, our Sae Maker ® push knies are, without doubt, the nest commercially made push knives in the world. The blade, shat, and “T” shapedtang are all drop orged rom one piece o Japanese AUS 8A Stainless Steel. This process,though costly, eliminates any unwanted sharp edges or suraces that would irritate thehand or ngers when the knie is clasped in a closed st, and it pro-duces a better knie, since the subsequent vacuum heat treatment andsub zero quench renders the blades virtually unbreakable.

Well made blades deserve equally well-made grips. A lot o time andenergy went into the production o our ‘T’ shaped handles. Made o shock absorbing Kraton® they totally encapsulate the tang and parto the shat so they can be comortably and securely grasped in the st with the blade jutting out between the ngers and used to deliverabsolutely devastating punching and slashing blows.

been celebrated or centuries, not only or its elegant linesand simple beauty, but also or the technique and skill thatwent into its construction.

Most swords oered today are interpretive copies o antiquitie s rom eudal Japan. They were made or warrior’so small stature who seldom rose above ve and a hal eet.As skillully designed as these swords are, they may not beperectly suited or the twenty rst century warrior, who ben-eted rom contemporary advances in childhood nutrition andhealthcare and grew up to be a substantially taller, stronger,and more athletic version o his historical counterpart.

As a way o compensating or this size disparity, Cold Steelhas created the Dragonfy Series. These swords eature thick-er, wider and heavier blades, which mirror our Emperor Seriesin respect to heat treatment, polish, quality o urnishings,and attention to detail, but with a ew new departures.

giM SWord There are two basic types o straight

bladed swords used in China. One is airlylong and heavy known as the Wu Jian or“Martial Sword”. The other is substantiall ylighter and called a Wen Jian or “Scholar’sSword” and was primarily carried or per-sonal sel deense.

Ater studying books and video tapes onthe history and use o both weapons, wedecided to make our own battle worthy Gim

(Wu Jian) or serious collectors and practitionerso Chinese Martial Arts.

The blade o our Gim is made out o 1055 car-bon steel and measures 30" long by 1 1/4" wide.For cutting and slashing, both edges are quitesharp and they terminate in a strong, useulpoint o stabbing. The traditionally styled guardand pommel are cast out o thick sturdy brassand t snugly on a stout Rosewood handle that

is both highly decorative as well as unctional. TheGim Sword comes with an excellent wood scabbardwith brass throat, chape and sword rings, so that itcan be worn suspended rom the belt or slung overthe shoulder.

The ancient Chinese Sword Breakerhad a rectangular (occasionally hollow ground) cross section with sharp cornersmaking it possible or it to ocus a blowwith maximum impact. Such a blow could,at the very least, beat an opponent’s bladeaside or so ar “out o line” that recoveryin time to mount a deense was virtuallyimpossible. At the most, it could live up toits name and could break, bend or disable conventional swords and many other weaponswith a single blow! In either scenario, one is let powerless to avoid the Sword Breaker’s

imposingly erocious point. Luckily, there were ew who encountered this powerhouse in battle,as its girth and het meant it required a warrioro substantial strength and agility to wield itproperly. But, in the hands o a physically able,and skilled warrior, it was the scourge o hand-to-hand combat.

We at Cold Steel drew inspiration or ourdesign rom an original antique Sword Breaker wewere privileged to handle and study in China. Ourhandle is made o heavy, dense Rosewood witha futed cross section that aords a good grip.It eatures beautiully cast nickel-silver ttingsthroughout, rom the decoratively detailed

circular guard to the very stout 5 lobbed pommelthat eectively counter balances the weight o theblade and makes it easier to wield.

Thirty inches long and beautiully orged outo 1050 high carbon steel, our Sword Breaker hasa striking rectangular cross section and hollow ground “fats”, and comes compete with a Rosewoodscabbard that eatures nickel-silver urniture tomatch the grip. It’s built or the extremes o asmashing, hammering ghting style, with a pointthat is acute enough to pierce with little eort, yettough enough to perorate even the thickest metalarmor. It’s a bona de wrecking machine!

The watchul Chinese lion moti is cast innickel-sliver with almost sculptural detail onthe heavy guard and pommels. This provides acompelling contrast to the elegant jade green

color o the cord wrapped handles and matchingrosewood scabbards that are covered in highlypolished samé (ray skin) that’s dyed to matchthe handles.

The most attention grabbing eature,however, are the blades themselves. Forged byhand and expertly tempered rom our nestDamascus steel, their distinctively subtle swirlpattern bespeaks the elegant beauty o necratsmanship combined with the incomparablestrength o Damascus.

jade Lion giM: The Lion Gim is a civiliansel-deense Wen Jian (Scholar’s Sword), with a littlemore panache than the practical versions (like ourown Gim Sword) that were made or the battleeld.

In our tests it severed and pierced 4" bamboo poleswith a single cut or thrust.

TaLWarFor over a century, most o the Western world has remained convinced that a point-oriented,thrusting sword is superior to an edge-oriented cutting sword. There are, however, a series o

books by D.A. Kinsley that cast a skeptical light on this running debate. Kinsley recounts numerousincidents (collected orm battleelds throughout the British Empire) where cutting swords provedequal, i not superior, to thrusting swords in deciding the outcome o a skirmish.

Our President, Lynn C. Thompson was encouraged by Mr. Kinsley’s ideas and ater considering allthe evidence decided to produce one o the best cutting swords ever devised: The Indian Talwar.

Taking a cue rom the most experienced Indian Swordsmen o the past, and the Pindari chie o old, Amir Khan, Lynn has combined a strongly curved British Light Cavalry blade with its distinctivehatchet point (wider near the tip than the orte) with a traditionally styled Indian hilt.

1852 PruSSian SaberIn the mid 1800’s the world’s armies were in a race to eld the most eective caval ry arms. The

debates raged regarding the merits o the lance over the saber or vice versa. Additionally therewere urther disagreements, with some avoring the point oriented weapon and others the edge.

The Prussian response was to equip their exalted cavalry with a saber that tried to strike aperect balance. Roll orged rom high carbon steel with a spring temper, it oered a slightlycurved blade with a pipe back (spine) that ran down its length to reinorce the spear point. It hada remarkably eective, pierced basket guard and a sharkskin wrapped grip. It was a light, handysaber that cut eciently and was diabolical in the thrust because o the added stiness o its pipeback cross section.

Our version, like many o our swords, is rooted in the experiences acquired by our President,

1904 auSTrian Saber The 1904 Austrian Cavalry Saber was designed by the Inspector General o the Cavalry and,

ater undergoing a number o minor revisions, was ocially adopted or use in 1908. It was issuedthroughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was well received by troopers and ocers alike orseveral reasons.

Chiefy, it oered a slightly curved blade with a pipe back and strong point that was ground thinenough at the edge to cut well in the mêlée while remaining sti and strong enough to thrust within the charge. Also, it had a low prole and an asymmetrically shaped, body-hugging, guard whoseshell was pierced by 27 holes which reduced weight and improved balance. This uniquely shapedhal basket guard gave excellent protection to the thumb, ngers, wrist, and orearm without theawkward “bulk” associated with other saber guards o the day.

1908 briTiSH CaVaLry SaberWhat makes the ideal cavalry saber? In the charge you need a narrow, sti blade with a sharp

point to impale your enemies. In the mêlée, on an immobile horse, you need a wide, curved, semifexible blade or cutting and slashing.

The British pondered this dilemma and in 1908, settled on a saber that avored the thrust. It hada narrow 35" long blade, a thick cross section and a sharp point.

To protect the hand, wrist, and orearm, it had a superb bowl shaped guard and a grip that auto-matically brought the point “in line” or the perect thrust. It was easy to carry too, as its scabbardhad two rings or suspending it rom the saddle or attaching it to a belt or baldric. It was issuedthroughout the British Empire and it is still used, with minor changes, even today.

CiViLian Saber The cavalry saber reached an incomparable level o popularity during the Napoleonic wars. An ecient weapon o war

with somewhat heroic overtones, it was used by ocers on oot as well as troopers mounted on horseback.It had one drawback. For civilian use, ormal, or ceremonial occasions, it was a bit cumbersome, even awkward, as even

the lightest models were too heavy and long or practicality. Additionally, the multiple bar hilt, which eectively protectedone’s hand rom an opposing blade, would occasionally catch, snag, or hook on objects it touched in passing.

The solution was to scale the military saber down to about the size and weight o a small sword and replace the hilt witha spring loaded olding mechanism equipped with a single knuckle bow.

This modication allowed the civilian saber to avoid snags and be worn much closer to the body on the lighter belts andbaldrics avored or civilian and military dress attire. It turned out to be a very eective weapon as well. Worn or sel-deense, or as a sign o authority, it shortly became a common military dress accessory, even to this day.

Now Cold Steel would like to oer you our interpretation o the civilian or military dress saber. The hilt eatures a highlydetailed British lion moti and comes complete with a matching olding guard that locks to the scabbard. For contrast, the grip is made o rich black leather and bound in highly polished brass wire.

Complementing the hilt is an equally rich yet sturdy scabbard. Made o thick black leather and heavily reinorced witha polished brass chape, throat, and hanging rings, it’s elegant enough or the most ormal occasions yet stout enough toendure hard wear and last or generations.

But you’ve got to draw the blade rom the scabbard to ully appreciate the genius o our Civilian Saber. Hand orgedout o 1050 high carbon steel with a hard spring temper, it sports a narrow, modestly curved 32" blade that terminates ina wickedly eective point. Primarily thought o as a thrusting weapon, our Civilian Saber can deliver a surprisingly deepcut due to its careully hand honed edge. It’s stout enough to deend against much larger weapons, yet light enough to be enced rom the ngers and wrist like a small sword. It can outmaneuver more ponderous blades while remaining ready todeliver a telling blow or lightning quick thrust.

SHaMSHir The Shamshir originated in Persia. Its strongly curved blade was enduringly popular and absolutely ideal or delivering

a devastating cutting stroke. And, contrary to popular belie, it was very eective at delivering rising, descending andhooking style thrusts!

Typically, the curved Shamshir blade had a narrow cross section and a sharp point. It had a simple brass or steel cross-bar hilt and an equally straightorward handle made rom wood or animal horn that terminated in a distinctively bulbouspommel. This pommel was oset slig htly to help the hand resist centriug al orce when making a hard cutting stroke.

Our version o this historic saber replicates the original as closely as possible. The only modications were to substitutea modern Carbon steel or the blade and to use black aux bualo horn or the handle. Even the scabbard is a close copy o the original. It’s made o thick, black leather (so it won’t dull the blade) and reinorced by a brass throat and chape, andcomes complete with dual suspension rings.

1796 LigHT CaVaLry Saber This saber was widely used by the British and their Prussian allies under General Blucher in the Battle o Waterloo. The

blade’s prole was derived rom the erocious Indian Talwar and was reviled by the French who strongly protested its usedue to the horribly destructive wound s it inficted. In act, this saber was so success ul as a cutting weapon that the Ger-man Cavalry continued to use it right up to the beginning o the Twentieth century!

I you want a combat quality saber that will pass the British Proo Test and is ully capable o shearing o arms and evenlegs with a single blow, this is a must have! It comes ully sharpened with your choic e o a wood and leather scabbard withsteel mounts and ttings, or an all metal scabbard.

1830 naPoLeon SaberNapoleon’s cavalry was the bane o the European battleeld. While his horses were second string, his swords were

absolutely rst rate. They were manuactured in a state o the art actory dedicated to producing the nest edged weaponso the day.

The medium weight saber we are oering here po ssesses excellent cutting and slashing capabili ties yet still remainsuseul or a thrust.

In appearance, it very closely resembles the U.S. 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, but in actuality is a ar more eective anddurable weapon. The moderately curved blade is orged out o 1055 Carbon Steel and eatures a long, wide uller and avery sharp, practical point.

The grip is equally well made. It’s wrapped in black leather and strongly protected by a stout, brass three bar hilt. Thewhole package comes with a heavy duty polished steel scabbard with dual rings so it can be easily attached to your baldricor sword belt.

u.S. 1860 HeaVy CaVaLry SaberAt the outbreak o the American Civil War, there were two types o sabers issued to the Federal Cavalry: “light” and

“heavy”. The light version was popular, but the heavy model, dubbed the “Old Wrist Breaker” was the one worth owning,as it was a superior weapon. Its 36" blade oered big reach advantages over most sabers, and its substantial weight gaveit the leverage to easily crush bones and sever limbs or even a head with a single blow. The brass guard had three bars toprotect the hand and the grip was wire bound leather and capped with a sturdy pommel. In its double ringed, steel scab-bard, it could be easily attached to a saddle or to a belt.

Ater examining and handling a number o original 1860 Heavy Cavalry Sabers, we decided to make our own reproductionwith a ew improvements. Our blade is made rom 1055 carbon steel with a hard spring temper and will pass the BritishProo Test.

have known a simple truth or ages... i youwant to become reasonably good at wieldinga ghting implement, you should endeavorto learn the best ghting techniques, ootwork, and the basic stances. However i you want to be a master at it you will haveto eventually start training with a “liveweapon”.

I, or example, your ultimate goal isto wield a razor sharp sword saely andeectively, you need to train with a swordthat approximates the size, eel and het o a live blade, yet minimizes the possibil-ity o causing grievous, permanent, orlie-threatening injury to yoursel or yourtraining partner.

This concept was implemented by theancient Romans, who used dull woodenswords to train their Gladiators and sol-diers. And Japanese Samurai used a woodentraining sword that was called a Bokken.It’s an elegant solution to a vexing problem

and eective enough to still be used today. The only problem is that a wooden trainingweapon can rot, crack, chip or splinter andeventually become useless.

Cold Steel’s solution to these dilem-mas was to design a line o syntheticsubstitutes, thatare low in price andimpervious to theelements. The ColdSteel line o TrainingWeapons are madeo the heaviest grade polypropyleneavailable and closely duplicate their realcounterparts in length, size and eel. Whilethey’re not quite as rigid as wood, they havethe winning advantages o being virtuallyunbreakable, remarkably sti and cutresistant.

While we heartily approve o our Armed Forces wearingdress swords and sabers, we thought it was a shame that onlyunsharpened, poorly tempered wall hangers made o weak stain-less steel are all that’s available.

That’s why we decided to make our own truly battle worthyreproductions. They’re aithul in every detail to governmentspecications; they oer highly polished blades, appropriateetching and quality hilts and scabbards.

The only real changes we have made are to drastically im-prove their perormance as weapons by orging them rom 1050Carbon Steel and properly heat treating them to a tough springtemper beore sharpening.

In the case o the Marine Corps Ocer’s Saber, we havechanged the hilt to solid mirror polished brass (not easily worn gold plate) and improved the attachment o the tang to the hilt soit could better withstand the rigors o sword to sword combat.

SMaLL SWord The advantage o the sword point over the edge became evident by the end

o the 16th century. The Rapi er, with its long elegantly thin prole, which em-phasized its point, became the popular choice in civilian sel-deense. It was,however, an unwieldy weapon, especially when it was used in narrow, crowdedstreets and alleyways. Eventually, by the end o the 17th century, a more sophis-ticated, shorter and lighter version o the Rapier emerged, the Small Sword.

Its primary advantage was its sti, lightweight blade which was orged in atriangular cross section. The hilt (compared to the Rapier’s) was simple andsmartly unctional, consisting o no more than an elliptical plate, or two shellsand a knuckle guard.

Our version duplicates the original model’s best eatures, but uses modernmaterials like 1055 carbon steel, heat treated to a tough spring temper. The hilt eatures two shells with unctional nger loops and a light, but exceptionally strong, knuckle guard.

The Small Sword comes complete with a very attractive leather scabbard that eatures an intricately decoratedthroat and chape.

According to most historians the Rapier rst appeared on the sword scene inthe late 14th century and held sway in most o Europe until the late 16th centuryexcept in Spain where it endured clear into the 18th century. The reason or itslong reign as the civilian weapon o choice or sel-deense and dueling can be

tied to its two major advantages.First its long, slim, double edged blade was ideal or delivering point ori-

ented blows at a great distance while still being able to deliver a stinging cut.And secondly, its continually evolving hilt o rings, bars, quillons, shells, andeventually, an intricately chiseled cup oered excellent protection (especiallynow that the armored gauntlet had been abandoned) and shed, caught ordefected blows at the sword hand and orearm with great aplomb.

Sadly, while never proven ineective or obsolete, the rapier eventually succumbed to the dictates o ashion and gaveway to the emerging small sword.

Happily Cold Steel has chosen to revive the Rapier with our own interpretation designed by Dave Baker. The long,narrow blade is ully sharpened and beautiully polished with a single wide uller at the orte to assure perect balance. The hilt also refects the best in cratsmanship and materials ashioned rom stainless steel eaturing a classic ribbedshell and multiple bars, quillons and knuckle bow or unparalleled hard protection.

The grip itsel is made o wood covered with rich black ray skin and decorative wire and terminates in a heavy ribbedpommel that serves as a counter balance to our Rapier’s long blade.

CoMPanion Parrying daggerDesigned to complement our Ribbed Shell Swept Hilt Rapier, our Parrying Dagger oers a long, double edged blade

with a sti, diamond cross secti on and is ully sharpened, which makes it ideal or deliveri ng a lethal thrust. In additi onto that, it also sports twin, upturned quillons that are expertly angled to catch, trap, and immobilize an opponent’sblade. The handle o our dagger is styled to match the corresponding ly larger Rapier with its simil ar wood, ray skin andwire grip, and heavy ribbed pommel.

CoLiCHeMarde and dagger

The Colichemarde emerged on the sword scene in the late 1600’s duringthe decline o the Rapier and the rise o the small sword. Its long suit wasits uniquely shaped blade that was extra wide at the orte then stepped downor narrowed or the rest o its length beore ending in a wicked point. Theadvantage o this conguration was it allowed the sword to be used to parryor oppose even the heaviest weapons without breaking, yet remain light andsupple enough to take ull advantage o its lightning quick point.

Our president Lynn C. Thompson has long been an admirer o the Colichemardedue to its great versatility in attack or deense so we enlisted the aid o our good riend Dave Baker, and made our own modern interpretation.

True to orm, our blade mirrors the original design concepts with an extralong and wide orte that abruptly tapers down to an acute and deadly point. The hilt eatures a decorative, yet highly unctional, double shell guard, complete with nger loops and knuckle bow, while the grip is completely wire wrappedand capped with a matching pummel.

Additionally, we have also taken the liberty o creating a matching dagger with a sti, beautiully ground and polishedblade, double quillons, and wire wrapped handle.

iTaLian Long SWord The era o the long sword spanned almost three centuries (approximately 1350 to 1650). This, undoubtedly, was because it really

worked! It eatured a distinctiv e cruciorm hilt and a long, double edged blade and was equally adept at opposing both light and heavilyarmored oes. You see, its extra long blade oered the reach and leverage or powerul stabbing, cuttin g and chopping strokes whileits long cross guard and heavy pommel were useul or hooking , striking and smashing. When heavy plate armor was encountered,blows with the edge were marginally eective and were oten abandoned in avor o a “Hal-Swording” technique; where one hand grips the hilt and the other the blade to better direct the point in powerul jabs, and to more accurately thrust at the small gaps and joints present in a suit o armor.

Having read S.M. Stirling’s “Change” series o science ction novels about a world that loses 600 years o technological evolutionovernight (an event called “The Change”) at least a dozen times each, has let our President Lynn C. Thompson quite taken with themany virtues o the Long Sword and inspired him to make a Cold Steel variation.

Modeled on the Italian concept o sword design, the blade and balance slightly avorsthrusting attacks, however, its cutting edges are astonishingly eective too and can deliversome down right erocious blows. Additionally, its simple cruciorm hilt is also all businesswith a long upturned cross guard, leather-over-wood grip, and a counter balancing sh tailpommel. Fast as a rog’s tongue the Italian Sword is deadly in a ght and built li ke a tank.

iTaLian Long SWord daggerSince our Italian Long Sword is light and well balanced enough to use in one hand we thought

we’d oer a companion dagger to take the place o a shield, targe, or buckler. Scaled downin size but almost identical in appearance, its sharply tapered, double edged blade slightly avors attacks with the point over the edge and is sti and strong enough to parry any sword.

ViKing SWord The Viking sword o the 9th and 10th centuries eatured a long wide blade with a broad central uller and two keen edges. The pre-

erred stroke was a hard slash or chopping blow, so the point was airly rounded yet acute enough to be useul or thrusting. A simple guard with orward curving quillons was oten utilized and combined with a utilitarian wooden handle that was covered with leather,

bone, or even cast in brass.But, what really made the Viking Sword so distinctively recognizable rom its contemporaries was its heavy 5 lobed pommel usedto balance the long blade.

Our sword has eatures in common with its historical counterpar t. It has a double edged blade, hand orged out o Carbon steel andthen polished to a brilliant lustre. The wooden handle is covered in leather and is supported by a simple, elegant guard at one end anda 5 lobed pommel at the other. Both guard and pommel eature Celtic knot embellishments.

To house the keen double edge blade, the Viking Sword comes with a wood scabbard covered in black leather and reinorced with ahighly polished steel chape and throat.

norMan SWord The Norman lust or battle and ravenous desire or land and treasure can, like their amous sword be undoubtedly traced to their

Viking oreathers who wrenched their homeland in northwestern France rom the hands o Charles the Simple in the Treaty o Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 AD.

Never satised with their lot, it wasn’t long beore they once again took up their broad,double-edged swords and set sail across the English Channel to conquer Britain most amously, at the battle o Hastings in 1066 AD.

Now Cold Steel is pleased to oer you our battle ready version o this amous sword.Like the originals we have studied, and the trainers our President Lynn C Thompson sparswith, it oers a long wide blade with ully sharpened edges and a very useul point.

To insure it’s light enough to be easily wielded with one hand we have also added a singlebroad uller in the center o the blade that serves to reduce weight, improve balance andadd the stiness needed to withstand heavy blows.

The Kukri, with its markedly downward curved blade, has long been identied with the Gurkha War-riors o Nepal, erocious mercenaries who have who have wielded this blade or over 150 years in theservice o the British Empire.

The Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri was inspired by Cold Steel President, Lynn C. Thompson’s close associa-tion with Dr. Maung Gyi, chie instructor o the American Bando Association, and a renowned martialartist with wide-ranging knowledge and skills. Under Dr. Gyi’s tutelage, Lynn gained insight into the ull potential o the Kukri and learned it was not just a chopping weapon but a piercing, slashing, andsmashing weapon as well. Smashing techniques al low the Kukri to unction as a hammer or mallet orto deliver non-lethal blows in a sel-deense role. In almost every respect, the Recon Scout® is simply a 7 1/2 inch Trail Master® Bowie (see below). It oers the same steel,heat treatment, blade thickness, blade shape, and handle.

Unlike other combat knives, the Recon Scout’s® broad clip point is highly resistant to bending or breaking. It’s ideal or longrange cutting and slashing. Additionally, the blade is equipped with a slightly concave alse edge that measures approximately3 1/2" long.

Like the Trail Master®, the Recon Scout® has a slight curve along the entire length o the blade. This curve allows the bladeto be used in a draw cut as well as a chopping stroke. Plus, the extra curve near the tip provides plenty o “belly” or emergency eld dressing and skinni ng. The Recon Scout comes with a tough Cordura sheath.

The Trail Master® is the most knie or the money ever commercially built! In terms o sharpness, edge holding and strength,it will out perorm, by a wide margin, any actory made knie we know o and 99% o all hand orged knives as well!

The broad clip point o the blade is extremely resistant to bending or breaking because it is slightly wider and considerablythicker than most Bowie knives on the market. It is, however, very sharp and oers phenomenal penetration. Additionally, theblade back is equipped with a slightly concave alse edge that measures approximately three and a hal inches long.

The Trail Master® balances approximately 3/4" in ront o the guard or a slightly blade-heavy eel that’s ideal or heavychopping and slashing strokes. Plus, the edge has been honed by hand, then given a high speed bu until it is truly razor sharpand nished with a beautiul rolled edge.

There are many unortunate people who have endured the terror o a violent assault. The luckier ones that survived these crimes areoten changed orever. There remains, long ater the incident has passed, a paralyzing loss o condence, a circumspect mistrust o strangers, and a thorough oreboding about the world in general. Those who have never suered a lie-threatening assault dread the possibility o it happening to ourselves or our loved ones. The mindnumbing idea o being unable or insuciently prepared to deend one’s sel is too alarming to consider.

It’s unortunate as well that we cannot always count on assistance rom an already overburdened police orce. Law enorcement agen-cies aren’t equipped to respond to every call, no matter how desperate, and oten by the time they are called it’s too late or them to domuch more than assess the scene and call an ambulance.

There were over 1,382,000 violent crimes committed in 2008, and with the general loss o economic prosperity we’ve had recently, thatnumber is surely going to continue to rise. The statistics rom the FBIUniorm Crime Reporting Program paint a grim picture o the worldwe live in today:

• One murder occurs every 32 minutes

• One forcible rape happens every 5.9 minutes

• One robbery transpires every 1.18 minutes

vised club in the absence o suitable ammunition or a bayonet. It’s also true that an 8-10 lb. rife, grasped by its long barrel and swung with both hands hits like a reight train and, i it doesn’tbreak, will crush bones like dry twigs and pulp fesh into jelly.

American Indians in the early sixteenth century observed these acts and wasted no time in ashioning their own gunstock war clubs. These were made o specially chosen straight grainhard woods like Maple, Ash, Oak, Hickory or Hornbeam and weighed rom two to three pounds. They hit with remarkable orce and proved to be extremely lethal weapons as their hitting powerwas oten enhanced by the addition o a short lance point or one or more knie blades. In act,the Gunstock war club became so popular it soon migrated West to the Great Plains and the

Pacic coast where it endured as a weapon into the 1880’s and as a ceremonial and danceweapon to this very day.

While there are a ascinating variety o historical examples we could have reproduced, ourswas custom designed by blade smith Rich McDonald. He incorporated all the best eatures romour avorite clubs including the ridged center line, a short lance point, and the classic “Fawn’sFoot” handle.

To avoid the risk o cross grain breakage, we have abandoned the traditional hardwoods in avor o Polypropylene. As you may know, this material is highly resistant to shock and is virtu-ally unbreakable making it particularly suitable or use in this weapon. And as an added bonus,this material is highly resistant to the elements and won’t warp, rot, shrink crack or splinterthe way wood does.

For those interested in re-enacting various periods o our rontier history, we have given ourweapon a very realistic wood grain nish. This means you can easily customize your club with“cut outs”, brass studs, tacks, eathers, horse hair alls or the paint o your choice.

authorities believe it was rst invented in Malaysia where it migratedthrough the Malaysian and Indonesian archipelago’s nding its way to thePhilippines and as ar north as Japan. The blowgun, however, was not justa southeastern weapon; it also suraced in the western hemisphere in the jungles o south and Central America, moving as ar north as the southeast-ern United States.

Blowguns were originally invented to serve as a hunting weapon. Theywere used to bag small animals and birds, with small stones or hardened claypellets being used or ammunition. Andrew Demko designed the Ram Sae ™ lock to work intandem with the mono block handle. It eatures a unique, sel adjusting ram that moves orward as the knie is opened and

wedges itsel tightly between the tang cut away we call the“shel” and the “U” shaped “roo” o the handle. It’s poweredby a strong compression spring that urges the ram orwardand makes or an incredibly strong lock up. Positive pressureon the lock generated by heavy cutting or chopping strokes isdistributed through the blade, then the blade tang shoulder and nally directly into the mono block handle that acts like a giantunbreakable stop pin. Negative pressure rom sticking, diggingor prying with the point is directed in a dierent directionthrough the blade to the blade tang shel and then to the ramwhich is squeezed between the shel and the “U” shaped roo o the handle. Negative pressure easily deeats the vast majorityo lock mechanisms. The only way the Ram Sae ™ lock can beovercome is i the blade breaks or i the pivot pin is sheared o. Two situations that are highly improbable.

steel. Drop orging is, without doubt, the best method o manuacture or any impact weapon, particular ly one with a cutting edge. Duringthe orging process a metal ingot is heated almost white hot and then ormed into shape in a series o progressive dies. The large steeldies are xed to enormous compressed air hammers. Each die ham-mers the hot metal into a gradually more nished shape. The steel is

kneaded and compressed into a completely homogenous mass making the grain structure uniorm and minimizing gas pockets or other imperec-tions that can ruin the construction o a hand orged hawk. This is whymost good axes, hatchets, and hammers are drop orged.

These hawks are dierentially heat treated. This means that the cut-ting edge and hammer ace is ully hardened, while the balance is let

The Samburu spear breaks down intothree components: The rst is the spearhead itsel, permanently welded to a 3/8"thick steel shat. Second is the counterbalancing butt spike also known as the shoe. This is used as an alternative point or prac-tice throwing, preserving the actual spearblade itsel or more serious work. Thirdis the black, hardwood handle with a doubletaper connecting the head and shoe.

Our Samburu spear comes unassembled or ease o transportation. All you have todo is t the blade and butt spike tightly tothe handle and attach them with the pro-vided retaining screws.

the preerred spear o the RomanLegionnaire. Primarily this was be-cause o its extreme eectiveness.It was ashioned in two parts; a longiron shat with an integral point, anda sturdy wood handle attached by asimple rivet. It was usually carried inpairs and thrown in coordinated volleysat close range in a tactical attempt toimpede and/or break up charging inantryby either killing them outright, or strikingtheir shields, creating a tangled steel andwood mess, that eectively made theirshields worthless as deensive weapons.

Ater many years o experience inmanuacturing spears, Cold Steel is nowin a position to oer you a modern inter-pretation o the Ancient Roman Pilum.It’s made in two parts, so it’s easy to takedown and reassemble. The Zulus are perhaps the ercest, mostcombative tribe in all South Arica. In the early1800’s the Zulu King, Shaka, subjugated thevast area o land between the Phongoloand Mzimkhulu rivers and laid the oun-dations or the Zulu Nation. Then in 1879the Zulus handed the British one o themost humiliating deeats in history at thebattle o Isandlwana, when they annihilatedan entire column o 1200 Englishmen (whowere supported by artillery and cavalry), anddid it with little more than cowhide shields andtheir Assegais, or short stabbing spears. Evento this day, a Zulu tribesman is not somebodyto be trifed with lightly.

The thing that distinguishes the Zulu peoplemost is their ondness or using a Knob Kerrie,or walking stick. Our President, Lynn C. Thomp-son, who regularly hunts in South Arica, hasamassed an impressive collection o thesehandmade sticks. Most o them are made rom indigenous Arican hardwoods like WildOlive, Pink Ivory, and Red Bush Willow, and aretopped with a distinctive ball or knob.

Adapted or the western marketplace,

our Arican Walking Stick eatures the bestparts o traditional Zulu Kerries; like an un-dulating shat, and the traditional geodesicball grip. However, instead o using a costlyexotic hardwood, we’ve made ours out o blackPolypropylene. This means that, in addition tobeing virtually unbreakable, it’s also impervi-ous to the elements. It will never rot, warp,crack, splinter, swell, shrink, mildew or ade,and it’s ready or all the wear and tear you, andthe world, can dish out.

Although its primary mission is to be a walk-ing stick to aid one’s balance when crossinguneven, slippery, wet or rough terrain, it canalso serve as a pointer, lever, or probe. It alsomakes a ormidable tool or sel-deense in anemergency.

The Blackthorn bush is ound throughout Ireland and theBritish Isles. It has been prized or centuries as amaterial or premium walking sticks. The originalBlackthorn sticks were 2 to 4 oot long Irish shil-lelaghs (the national weapon o rural Ireland). Inexpert hands the shillelagh was so earsome thatduring the nal occupation o Ireland, the Englishoutlawed it. To get around the law, the Irishturned the shillelagh into a 3-oot walking stick. The English didn’t want to appear unreasonable byoutlawing walking sticks too, so the Irish kept theirmodied shillelaghs and the world gained a beautiul and unctional walking stick known simply as theBlackthorn.

Cold Steel made the eort to obtain and sellauthentic Blackthorn sticks over teen years ago,but the venture turned out to be disappointing, andnot because the sticks didn’t sell well. It was becauseBlackthorn is dicult to come by and, since it’s grown and not manuactured, it is somewhat incon-sistent in quality.

Cold Steel’s recent orays into injected moldedpolypropylene products has yielded some impressiveresults and now we have produced a new polypropyl-ene Blackthorn that has all o the advantages o real

1776 when Congress compelled all Marines to wear a thick, high leather collar (known inthe vernacular o the day as a “stock”).
