MAKING CHANGES

THE JOURNEY TO SUCCESSI have come to that point in my life where I feel I am making personal friends with the doctor, I seem to be there so often, and my husband and I often say that we need to go to bed half an hour earlier just to take the medication we need before bedtime.

Joking apart, when your health begins to suffer you do begin to look at your lifestyle, your eating habits and the exercise you do, or rather don’t do. The first time that doctor looks at you and says, ‘well it’s your age’. A shock wave runs through your body and panic sets in, will things only go one way from now on. As I sat in the waiting room one more time I picked up a leaflet that was entitles MAKING CHANGES, THE JOURNEY TO SUCCESS. The article spoke about honestly assessing the things we do that create an unhealthy lifestyle, such as eating badly, drinking and smoking too much and having an inactive life. The more I read of this article, the more I could connect it not only to my physical life but also my spiritual one.

As I sit down to start this article, vicarages up and down the country smell of burnt palm crosses, in preparation for the Ash Wednesday service, a service which literally marks the beginning of Lent, a period of time, 40 days where followers of Christ get to do a bit of a health check on their spiritual life, and ask the question is there anything that is unhealthy and needs addressing, anything that I carry that needs forgiveness anything that I need to put right before it begins to affect my spiritual and often physical well-being, and if you think that body and soul aren’t connected just think about how anger or stress affects the way we see the world, the way we see each other and the way we see God.

By the time you read this article Ash Wednesday will have gone and Easter will have arrived, but Lent is what makes Easter a major Christian festival because for 40 days and nights we have reflected upon our lives in prayers, cleared away any cobwebs of bad behaviour and unhealthy attitudes and that should help us to literally spring into our Easter festivities and celebrations.

In a way, Lent is a time when we are really looking at ourselves in order that we might change things within us so that we live a healthier faithstyle – to look at the way we live and behave and the things we do or don’t do that make us better people to live with or be a friend to or be a good neighbour to. The tough part of Lent is not identifying the things we need to change, the tough part is making the changes and then sticking to them – after all our bad habits can and do become second nature to us and some bad habits dare I say we even enjoy!

Some of us might be using this Lent to try to make some changes, like only buying Fair-trade produce or becoming vegetarian or committing a set time to support a certain charity. Others may be trying to fast or pray more in order to listen to God and God’s direction in their lives. For some simply giving up chocolate or alcohol is a big enough challenge to be getting on with. The point is that Lent is a time not to complete the changes we need to make in our lives, that seems to me more about a short, sharp ‘done and dusted’ approach to our lives over in 40 days and a sigh of relief that we managed it, only to return the next day to our old familiar life, with all the stuff included we worked so hard to leave behind during lent. Lent is not a time of ticking things off as completed, Lent is a time of thinking and reflecting upon the things I need to change and to make a start changing them; it is a time to take stock and to take time out to plan some small changes as well as the big ones and give some thought to what might trip us up and stop us from succeeding at our goal, not just for the next 40 days but over the next year and on into the future.

Easter may be close at hand and just maybe you are thinking about taking Lent seriously in 2021! but what about a mini Lent, maybe a week where you reflect upon your life, your priorities, your beliefs and think of just one thing you wished you didn’t do and one way you could change it and in doing so create a change in you.

At the end of Lent comes Easter a time of celebration and great joy as we use symbols of new life to remember the power of the Cross and that Jesus’ death meant life eternally. So let us remember that letting our old habits die will produce new life in abundance for us, and for those around us because new life, liberated and transformed by reflection, saying sorry to God and receiving the new life. His offer is infectious to those around us and who knows what that may produce.

HAVE A POWERFUL LENT, WHAT’S LEFT OF IT AND AN EASTER SEASON FULL OF GOOD HEALTH IN BODY AND IN SOUL.

Rev’d Marg

*******************************LADIES CIRCLE

It is hard to believe that one of the oldest diseases, first mentioned in Biblical times, is still causing so much misery today. The stigma associated with leprosy has always been bad and continues to cause many problems for whole families. Leprosy is a mildly infectious disease associated with poverty. Every two minutes somewhere in the world, someone is diagnosed with leprosy but if treated, it is totally curable.

David and Ann Harris gave us a presentation about the important work of the Leprosy Mission through the work of the dedicated medical staff at the Christian Leprosy Hospital in Myanmar, the country formerly known as Burma. This recently opened hospital, cost £330,000 and treats both physical and mental conditions. Dr Saw, one of the heroes of this hospital, has been known to walk for two days to see a patient in his own home, who needed urgent treatment for leprosy. We were pleased to support the work of this deserving mission and thank David and Ann for their interesting and informative presentation.

My thanks to everyone who brought in a wide selection of tinned and dried foods which we

were able to take to the Wolverhampton Food Bank.

‘Pass along the bus, please!’ is Margaret Smallman’s talk on Tuesday April 7th. We meet, as usual, in the Parish Rooms at 8pm and would be happy for you to join us.

They had travelled together, gathering round them a group of people that Jesus could rely on, who totally understood what he was doing and why. They thought the group was loyal and each trusted everyone else, until that fateful Passover when they had tried to persuade Jesus not to go into Jerusalem, saying it was too dangerous, but knowing that, if he went they would go with him. Even when the twelve closest to Jesus gathered together in that upper room they did not know what was to follow, that one of their number, Judas, would betray him with a kiss for thirty pieces of silver, that Jesus would go peacefully when the Roman soldiers met them in the garden, and that at least one of them would deny knowing him, so preserving their own safety. After all, as the captain of the Roman soldiers said, they couldn’t round up everyone with a Galilean accent.

It was so crowded in the city, even more so than the average Passover, and Matthew explained that he hadn’t been able to get near to Jesus on the route to Calvary. He saw him fall and be helped to carry on and he reassured Mary that he remained dignified through it all, just as if he knew that it all arranged by God, his father. Jesus spoke to those who were crucified with him and, at the end, as the curtain in the great temple of the city was rent in two and the sky went black, he breathed his last. Later it was with great love that his body was removed, and he was lain in the grave and a great stone rolled across the entrance because the Romans were frightened that the body would be stolen.

Matthew told Mary much about the occasions when Jesus spent time with his friends after his death and resurrection, about the fishing on the lake and the barbeque on the beach, and he couldn’t explain to her how Jesus could be the same man and yet different. After Jesus’s ascension all his friends had gone their separate ways, each emboldened by what they had seen and learnt, and determined to make up for their betrayal of him by sharing his good news throughout the land and even some of them went abroad and introduced Jesus to people who’d never heard of him before.

Before going on his way Matthew was assured by Mary that he had really put her mind at

A story for EasterIt was many years since the tragic death of Jesus, and his mother, Mary, had still not got over it. Her mind kept going back to the way he’d died, as she thought of it, crucified with a brigand and a thief for company, and even worse, by the Romans, who had no right to be in their country, at the behest of the Jewish leaders who were afraid of his growing influence among the common people. She then went on to reflect on his conception and birth. She did this all on herown as her husband Joseph had become distant from her in his old age. Time was that their age difference had not made any difference in their relationship but then he became ill, and rather than dwelling on Jesus’s lack of interest in taking over the carpentry business, which had been in the family for generations, he was pleased that two of Jesus’s brothers had become very accomplished at the skills which he taught them and another of the family looked after the business side of things. They were now known in Nazareth as the carpenters rather than the family of that man who was crucified and most of the family were pleased about this.

One day a smart looking, man who said his name was Matthew, called to see Mary. He introduced himself as one of Jesus’s closest friends and he helped her to see that his death was not the tragedy that she thought but rather a triumph. Matthew reminded Mary that Jesus rose again and lived with his friends for forty days before ascending to heaven to be with his father who had instigated the birth in the first place. Mary told him the story of that mysterious conception, then the journey to Bethlehem. Oh how uncomfortable it had been on that donkey, but she couldn’t have walked it, she was so close to the due birth date. It was a long time since she’d had the chance to share that story with anyone as it was something Joseph and the rest of the family wanted to forget about.

Matthew shared his story with her, and Mary was thrilled to be able to sit and hear about Jesus from someone who’d known him after he left her, telling her simply that he was ‘going to complete his father’s work.’ Matthew had known Jesus since his baptism by John in the Jordan.

Saluting Free Trade

This month (Feb) we can celebrate twodecades of the Fairtrade movement, foundedback in 1995. Recent research showed that 78per cent of the UK public now recognise theFairtrade Mark, which stands for the world’slargest and most recognised fair-trade system. Its aim is to secure a better deal for farmers and workers.

Based in Bonn, Germany, it sets internationalstandards, organises support for producersaround the world and promotes trade justiceinternationally. The work of building a marketfor fair-trade products is carried out by national

Sites for Travellers

There was concern regarding the DistrictCouncil’s Site Allocations proposal for theprovision of a total of 33 travellers’ pitches bythe year 2028. Cllr Ewart was of the view thatthis target far exceeded the requirement. CllrVal Chapman had drafted Bilbrook’s objectionto the proposed site in Lane Green Road.

Watery Lane Development

The 26 November planning meeting wasinformed of a public consultation on the plansbeing drawn up by Richborough Estates for theproposed Core Strategy residentialdevelopment adjacent to Watery Lane [adevelopment comprising approximately 150new homes plus recreational facilities]. Therewould be a public exhibition at the ParishRooms on 2 December. A dedicatedconsultation website had also been set up atwww.waterylanecodsall.co.uk giving access toinformation and a response form for theduration of the consultation period 24November to 23 December. [Although theconsultation period has ended, the website isstill accessible at the time of writing in mid-January].

The good thing about commuting to work

Next time you are standing in a crowded traincarriage or bus on your way to work, or evencycling or walking there in the rain, considerthis, you are better off than those who aredriving. Hard to believe? A recent study hasfound that people who make a regularcommute that involves some sort of physicalactivityare in better mental shape, sleepbetter, and are happier than those who drive towork.

As one researcher at the University of EastAnglia explained: “You might think that thingslike disruption to services or crowds ofcommuters might have been a cause ofconsiderable stress. But as buses or trainsalso give people time to relax, read, socialise, and there is usually an associated walk to thebus stop or railway station, it appears to cheerpeople up.” Another associated study hasfound that people who give up the car and usebus or train to get to work, lose weight.

Food intolerance

Do you believe that you are intolerant tocertain foods? It seems that more than one infive of us could be avoiding certain foodsbecause we have become convinced that weare allergic or intolerant towards them.A surveyfor the Food and Drink InnovationNetwork found that dairy and gluten are themost common types of food which we give up.This has enormous implications: up to a thirdof all households could by now have had toadapt to having a member of their family eitherunable or unwilling to eat certain food. This inturn has spawned a phenomenal growth in the industry which supplies us with foods free fromgluten, lactose, nuts, or other ingredients.

Good fruit

When you finish this story, you will want to eatsome fruit. It seems that eating just one or twopieces of fruit a day can cut the risk of a heartattack or stroke by up to 40 per cent. A recentstudy by Oxford University has found thatpeople who eat fruit daily have a far lower rateof heart disease, and a lower rate of the twomain types of stroke. And the more oftenpeople ate fruit, the more the risk fell. Another recent study, at Washington State University, has found that an apple a day can also helpkeep obesity away, as it makes people feelfuller for longer.

GAVIN WILLIAMSON, M.P.

What a busy start to the year it has been! I hope you have all had a wonderful half-term break.

There has been plenty of activities going on in and around Codsall but I just wanted to update residents on issues that I am trying to resolve. Several trees have been removed off the corner of Wolverhampton Road and Histons Hill within the last few days, prompting calls for the trees to be replaced. The plan to cut down the trees are to pave the way for an extension to council property as well as extra car parking spaces on council grounds. The decision to cut down the trees, has caused frustration with residents and has led to disgruntled members of the community to voice their concerns. It is extremely disappointing to see the sheer volume of trees removed by the council, and no guarantee as it stands of them being replaced. Many people take great pride in trees being so commonplace in South Staffordshire and I would like to see the District Council pledge to replant twice as many trees as soon as possible elsewhere within Codsall. In other but better news, I recently met with representatives of Staffordshire University who are involved with developing the roll-out of 5G across Staffordshire. I would be thrilled to see the whole of Staffordshire receive 5G broadband. It’s essential that we deliver the best connectivity across our region for businesses, hospitals and households and to unleash new investment and opportunities in South Staffordshire.I am also delighted to say that one of my pledges ahead of the 2019 General Election was demanding more police for South Staffordshire, and I am happy to see that the Government have announced that decade-high funding is being invested in the police, allowing more police officers to be recruited and present in South Staffordshire. As always, please do not hesitate to get in

touch if you have any queries or issues you would like to raise with me. I can be reached on email at [email protected], or you can phone my office on 01902 846616.

CODSALL VILLAGE HALL

As the Arts Festival draws to a close in early April and Codsall village life resumes its normal rhythm, here at the Village Hall we can look forward to more fundraising events.

Our first table Top sale of the year takes place on Sunday 5th April. Entrance for buyers is £1 and doors open at 11.00. The sale will end at approximately 2.00. If you are keen to hire a table, but afraid you may be too late, it’s worth contacting us. There may be a cancellation which has freed up a last minute table. If you are on the hunt for a bargain, then come along and browse the varied stalls selling goods from home furnishings, to clothes, toys and much more. However, be warned, the best bargains go quickly! Refreshments are on sale and parking spaces are plentiful and free.

Another popular event which will help get you out of the house on a Friday afternoon is our regular Bingo, which takes place on the 3rd Friday of the month. The next is on Friday 17th April, from 1.30 till 3.00, in the Pavilion. Entrance is £2 to include tea and biscuits. You pay as you go, so bring a friend or two and try your luck!

Alternatively, if you enjoy playing cards and want to try something new, contact the Whist Club which meets every Monday afternoon from 1.30 (except Bank Holidays). Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, lessons can be arranged. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities and you’d be made very welcome.

There are many other clubs and societies that meet at the hall. They include art, Codsall history, RSPB, drama, gardening, flower arranging, dance, yoga, and more! Pop into the hall and pick up a What’s On leaflet for more details. Visitors are welcome at many groups or you may need to contact someone from the group or society. Contact details can be found on the Codsall Village Hall website. We are also on Facebook.

The management Committee at the Hall works hard to update the facilities and to ensure we provide an attractive and well run venue for local people to visit and hire. Work is currently being

done to improve and illuminate our entrance. The new signage will also publicise the fact that we are the home of Codsall Dramatic Society and also Codsall Cricket Club.

So, if you are planning an important get together, party, or other family gathering, come and have a look. Our staff are always happy to show you around our different rooms. Please telephone or email first if possible. We benefit from a large, free, private car park and have disabled, ramped access to the building. There are also disabled toilets in 2 areas.

CODSALL COMMUNITY GROUPSupporting the green spaces of our parishWe held a Skittles and Fish Supper Night on Saturday 7th March at Bilbrook Village Hall. This event was ticket only and was sold out the week before, so we anticipated another fun evening.

Theresa Dorrance will conduct our next stroll in the countryside in Springtime on Sunday April 5th when hopefully the fields and byways will have dried out. The walk will be for about 4 to 5 miles. We will meet on the Co-op Car park at 1.00pm.

We continue to plan the Grand 2020 Summer Fair, this year the entrance fee for adults will be £2 and children come along for free. We are looking for entertainments and for stalls to add to the list that we already have, which includes The Dog Show and the dog agility team, contributions from the Fairground, Live Music, various food outlets, demos of martial arts and dancing, plus a mini sports day [Tug of War Egg & spoon races – no cheating please!]

If you have a suitable stall in mind or an entertainment you feel would add to the proceedings, please contact Megan Barrow on her mobile 07702 310939 she will be pleased to provide information about the Show on Sunday July 5th and take your details. On the subject of the Fair, we would like to appeal to all of you who are able to volunteer to become marshals. This may involve helping with setting up all the tents and gazebos in the morning

Page 36: CODSALL PARISH MAGAZINE - WordPress.com

and then dismantling it all at the end of the day. Help is always needed in different categories, so please contact Shane Jenkinson on his mobile 07939226656 to find out how to join the CCG and help us to make The Fair and our Community even better.

The signs are still good for The Fun Run in September this year. More information will become available soon. We will be organising another Walk in August and certainly there will be a Quiz in the Autumn.

Our A.G.M. will be held on the Monday 27th April at The Firs 7.45 pm. All are welcome to come along and meet the group.

Please keep an eye out for posters and banners around the villages advertising all activities or find us on Facebook ~ (codsallcommunitygroup) and here in the Parish Magazine.

Bishop Michael’s pastoral letter

At the time of writing, it is not clear how far the Coronavirus will spread, nor how seriously it will impact upon our lives. Undoubtedly, it presents us with a serious challenge, in terms both of public health and of the ways in which we relate to one another. However, it is much less deadly than the plagues which affected our country in past centuries, most famously the Great Plague of 1655.

At that time, Eyam in Derbyshire lay within the Diocese of Lichfield. That beautiful village played a famously heroic part in combatting the spread of the plague, which had been unwittingly introduced to the community through infested samples of cloth brought from London by a travelling tailor. Led by their vicar William Mompesson, the villagers took the selfless decision to ’self isolate’ for more than a year, avoiding all contact with neighbouring villages, their food supplies left at and collected from the parish boundaries. The cost in human lives was heavy, but the result of containment

was entirely successful.

Mompesson worked in close collaboration with one of his predecessors and potential rivals, the Nonconformist minister Thomas Stanley, who had been ejected from his living for his Puritan beliefs. In a display of ecumenical unity utterly remarkable for its time, the two clergy sustained the morale, strengthened the will, and re-established the unity of the community through their ministry, gathering their people together in open air services.

Eyam today is a very moving place, with no sites more evocative than its burying places, including the graveyard with the table tomb of William Mompesson’s wife Catherine, who died towards the end of the outbreak. It is deservedly a place popular with visitors, and forms the far end of the Peak Pilgrimage Trail which begins in Ilam, still in our diocese in the Staffordshire Peak.

But this is not a site of historical interest only. Eyam is a striking example of the church’s calling to bring unity in a society faced with forces which could pull it apart. Faced with the mortal peril of the plague, it would have been easy for the villagers of Eyam to divide and scatter; but thanks to the Christian message of faith, hope and love at the heart of their community, they stayed together. We in our time face challenges which could pull us apart - whether those be the threat of pandemic, the political divisions created and exposed in the long arguments over Brexit, the growing contrasts in wealth and health our society, or whatever. But as then, so now, our churches are at the heart of our local communities with a message of hope grounded in the reality of what God has done in raising Jesus Christ from the dead. This Easter, it is my hope and prayer that, like the Christians of Eyam, we can do our part in bringing together a divided society.

Cowslip or Cow Slop?

The name cowslip is believed to be a mispronunciation of cow slop, so named because the flowers are traditionally found near cow pats in pastures! A widespread plant of grassland, not to be confused with primrose which is more of a woodland plant. Cowslip can grow in many soils but really thrives in limestone and chalk grassland. It is an important nectar source for insects including bees, beetles and butterflies as it flowers early and can carpet an area where conditions are suitable. Look out for the yellow brimstone butterfly, which is on the wing early in the year, this may be feeding on cowslip flowers.

Like many wildflowers, cowslip has been part of the herbalists’ collection for centuries. It has a sedative quality so is used to treat sleep problems whilst the citrusy flavoured flowers can help with coughs. Cowslip flowers were also used to flavour wine and can be found in traditional Spanish recipes.

Also known as St Peter’s Keys or Keys of Heaven, cowslips were believed to have grown where St Peter dropped the Key to Earth. You may have cowslips in your churchyard grassland, if so try and leave the areas where it occurs uncut until the flowers have finished and set seed. Cowslip does not grow high so perhaps you could set your mower blade at 10cm so that the leaves are not shredded by subsequent mows.

All the best
