News & Notes COASTAL CAROLINAS HEALTH ALLIANCE
CEO Update we enjoy the opportunity to bring together so many of our community stakeholders for
education and networking.
The CCHIE team is hard at work with new data contributor integrations and piloting the DataMart project. We look forward to sharing updates with you as these initiatives
continue to progress.
For Coastal Carolinas Health Alliance (CCHA), our new non-acute membership tier continues to add members. For twenty-five years, CCHA membership was exclusively hospitals, and last summer our Board of Directors approved a non-acute membership category to
2017 has been off to a great start! The team has been busy with leading our various programs and project teams. We’re
also looking forward to several new initiatives ahead as we
enter into the summer months.
Coastal Connect Health I n f o r m a t i o n E x c h a n g e (CCHIE) hosted its 2017 Annual Town Hall Meeting and had a great turnout. We truly appreciate everyone who attended as well as our event sponsor, HappyOrNot. We h e a r d t w o d e t a i l e d presentations about key topics for healthcare IT: MACRA and CMS Compliance. This is always a fun event to host as
e n h a n c e r e g i o n a l collaboration. Please see Barb’s article on Page 2 to learn more about our new non
-acute members.
Last but certainly not least, our Mobi le Simulat ion Program (MSP) continues to drive higher training utilization at our member hospitals. We’re excited to announce that the MSP has a new website, where we plan to share updates and market our training capabilities. The team recently added a new patient simulator, Senior HAL, which expands our current training offerings and available
scenarios.
Ongoing strategic discussions have
included offering CCHA Mobile
Simulation Program training to non-
acute members as well as how to
support these members with project
teams similar to the ones we offer our
hospital members. There will be
opportunities for these new members to
join those current teams where they
complement the ongoing activities of
the team (i.e. Physician Recruitment).
Many of the new non-acute members
are already participating in Coastal
Connect HIE, so this is a logical
extension of our offerings and value to
them.
We look forward to providing updates
as this membership grows! If there are
questions or prospects for this
membership please contact me at
Though still in its early stages of
development, CCHA’s new non-
acute membership tier is
continuing to generate interest
and growth. To date, non-acute
membership has been offered to
eight healthcare organizations, and four
have accepted. In the December issue of
News & Notes we reported that
Wilmington Health and Cape Fear Clinic
were our first two members; we’re excited
to announce that MedNorth Health Center
and Lower Cape Fear Hospice have
joined as well. Our plan is to have a
minimum of twelve non-acute members by
the end of the year.
Approved last summer by our Board of
Directors, the new non-acute category
includes all non-acute providers in our
region including: skilled nursing,
rehabilitation, home health, hospice,
physician practices (specialty and
general), and other clinical providers that
support delivery of health care in our
region. Staff has been working with our
current hospital members to identify key
players in their service area. We have
identified thirty potential members, to
whom we will extend an invitation for
membership.
We are concurrently developing new
CCHA group purchasing contracts for non
-acute members. These contracts will
focus on areas that are of greatest value
to this particular group. Our master
agreement with Intalere will be a primary
offering, which will give new members
access to over 1,500 non-acute contracts
in their portfolio. Several members have
already experienced savings within their
first few months of CCHA membership
with more to come!
Growth Continues for New CCHA Non-Acute Membership Tier
Coastal Connect HIE Data Mart Enhances Population Health Analysis
stored in one place allows providers to
aggregate and analyze the information for
a fuller picture of health on a community
or even regional level. Ideally, a DataMart
can help providers answer several key
questions about community health, such
as “Where are my patients or members
seeking care?” “What are the current and
historical characteristics of the patient
population?” or even “Are we providing
Over the past couple months,
Coastal Connect HIE staff
members have begun providing
demonstrations of the new
DataMart project as well as
connecting our first participants.
We continue to produce sample data and
evaluate the table structure, which is at
the core of the DataMart. The table
structure organizes information around
the patient and their encounter. We look
forward to additional integrity checks as
we begin to focus on electronic measures
and the capabilities of the normalized
data to cover the mandated requirements.
Our DataMart project aims to support
population health analysis and initiatives
by serving as a single, patient-centric data
store point for clinical data and clinical
documents from separate databases
across the network. Having the data
the correct follow-up to our patients in a
timely manner?” A DataMart is
consolidated, complete, clean, and
connected.
CCHIE’s DataMart will organize provider
access to data for over five million
patients across the region. We will help
our connected hospitals and providers
use the data to report on the required
measures and metrics for their practice.
Tables, like those pictured here based on patients’ ages and diagnoses, can be made
available through the Data Mart through data aggregation across multiple sources.
NHRMC to deliver electronically into
their electronic health records.
In April, the health department will begin pushing care documents to the HIE, which will allow labor and delivery staff at NHRMC to access care documents in real-time, thereby eliminating the current
workflow of faxing documents.
CCHIE is excited to support this public health work effort that will improve care coordination across our communities, and Karon and I look forward to the
upcoming CureMD event.
Coastal Connect HIE staff have been asked to give a presentation on their integration project with Pender County Health Department’s electronic health record vendor, CureMD,
at the CureMD annual client conference.
Karon Casey, IT Support Lead, and I will attend the conference as co-presenters. Our talk will focus on a scope of work that will support real-time exchange between the HIE and the health department for maternity patients that deliver at New Hanover Regional
Medical Center (NHRMC) in Wilmington.
Pender County Health Department is already live with results delivery from the HIE, which allows results from
helps to support transition of care
among participants.
Also in April, the Pender County Health
Department will begin pushing provider
notes to the HIE. (Please see Patty’s
article below for more information about
this initiative)
We are also excited to announce that
EmergeOrtho will become an HIE data
contributor in late May.
As you can see, the CCHIE is staying
busy working throughout the region.
Coas ta l Connec t Hea l th
Information Exchange (CCHIE)
hosted over fifty attendees at its
2017 Annual Town Hall Meeting.
Those attendees represented
CCHIE-connected hospitals and
community providers across this region.
They joined us at the Country Club of
Landfall in Wilmington for updates on a
variety of timely topics and for networking
with other CCHIE members.
We had two guest speakers join us, too.
Mary McCaskill, Health IT Manager for NC
AHEC, spoke on “Navigating MACRA,”
and Dr. Andres (Andy) Exposito, Medical
Director of Physician Advisor Services at
EdiPhy Advisors, gave a talk on
“Reducing Claims Liability and Enhancing
CMS Compliance.”
Yvonne Hughes, our CEO, and Blair Kraft,
our Director of IT, rounded out the day
with updates about CCHIE’s growth and
DataMart Initiative. Yvonne shared
information about connecting community
providers and the functionality within the
HIE that supports transitions of care,
including the Community Health Record
and ADT (Admission, Discharge, and
Transfer) notifications. This segued to an
overview of the DataMart from Blair. He
summarized how a DataMart will
aggregate patient data from across a
variety of platforms into a single, patient-
centric store point. From there, healthcare
providers can access the data for
longitudinal analysis and population health
initiatives.
We sincerely appreciate all who attended
and made this a spectacular event.
CCHIE looks forward to hosting this event
next year when we’ll have new successes
and milestones to share with our
stakeholders. Also, we’d like to say a
special thank you to our fantastic event
sponsor, HappyOrNot!
Coastal Connect HIE is gearing
up for several upcoming
practice integrations. With
March Madness in full swing,
our team created the Data
Contributors bracket shown
above. Here’s a look ahead:
Coming in April, Coastal Connect HIE
participants will be able to query and
retrieve Continuity Care Documents
(CCDs) from UNC Healthcare and
Mission Health for acute and
ambulatory patients. This added value
