Welcome to Co-Cathedral of

St. John the Evangelist

Our parishioners, the parish staff and I, as rector, hope that your visit to our church will be a prayerful time while at the Mayo Clinic or while you are visiting our city for any other reason. We encourage you to consider Co-Cathedral of the St. John the Evangelist as your church away from home. If we may serve you with any of your needs please do not hesitate to contact us at the Parish Center. The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Community is committed to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ as we partner with the city and our neighbor, the Mayo Clinic. If you have recently moved to our city and desire to join the parish community, please find a form on our web page and register as a member. Together we pray that the Holy Spirit will lead us in being a welcoming Catholic community.

Fr. Jerry Mahon

Rector

Welcome to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST

Greetings to all our companions on the journey of Advent: During my homily last weekend, I mentioned the contrast with Lent and the call for repentance as we often focus our “penitential” practices and disciplines on Lent. However, there is a clear call to consider forms of discipline in Advent as well. The Church invites us to wear purple and there is not the Gloria during the weekend liturgy, and I raise this distinction to enable us to be alert and watching for the Presence of Christ. In the midst of our distractions and numerous preoccupations, we have an Advent call to pay attention, to be looking for the signs of God. This adventure opens the journey to be surprised as we discover where Jesus shows up!! We have a longing for the Savior of the world and hope is arising for your coming, Lord Jesus. Last weekend we were challenged to “Be Watchful --- Watch”!!! If you are following the devotional companion booklet, you are being invited to prepare as the readings open this path with John the Baptist and one of the songs on the CD is: “Prepare Him Room”. Also, the author poses some questions and one is: “What are some fears or attachments that may be cluttering your heart and reducing the space available for God’s grace?” I listen to many people speak about their fears with the Pandemic, fears about losing employment, fears about what is happening to their children during this time and the list is endless. We all know the best starting point is to name our fears and then enter into the places where we feel lost. Preparations for Christmas need to be full of joy and excitement in contrast to burdens that overwhelm us and clutter our vision. Listen to John the Baptist who appeared in the desert proclaiming “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins”. We might ask the Spirit to show us an area of our life where we need to change, that the Spirit might allow us to be open to grace and love. Conversion, a change of heart as we discover some darkness, is a lifelong journey and we know this in our heads. At the same time, it is a very long journey to move from my thinking to a real surprise of my heart being opened and available to the way in which God is calling me/us to conversion again and again. We are masters at fooling ourselves and we manipulate others to aid our blindness with no awareness of the depth of our longing. The former Cardinal Ratzinger offered some challenges in reflecting on change with St. Augustine and John Henry Newman: “Augustine’s actual experience was a different one. He had to learn that being a Christian is always a difficult journey with all its heights and depths. Conversion is always development, and precisely in this manner it is more intimate to us than we are to ourselves.” Augustine invites us to do the work of following Christ and recognizing the development year by year. Ratzinger continues with St. John Henry Newman: “In the idea of ‘development’, Newman had written his own experience of a never finished conversion and interpreted for us, not only the way of Christian doctrine, but that of the Christian life. The characteristic of the great Doctor of the Church, it seems to me, is that he teaches not only through his thought and speech but also by his life, because within him, thought and life are interpenetrated and defined. If this is so, then Newman belongs to the great

teachers of the Church, because he both touches our hearts and enlightens our thinking.” While our learning, reading and formulating doctrine and dogmas is important and people like Newman was gifted in this way it is clear that is only part of what is needed. We are summoned to recognize the need for conversion is the roadway of a whole lifetime. Nothing is gained forever, and we ask for a way of being that joins the humility of John the Baptist in looking to Christ and being ready for a surprise. Advent blessings, Father Jerry Mahon Rector

PRAYING THROUGH ADVENT WITH THE ADVENT WREATH Jesus is the light of the world and as we grow closer to Him we are filled with more of His light. Each week, we light a new candle slowly losing more and more of the darkness as we draw closer to the coming of Christ at Christmas. Join us in praying around your Advent wreath each week.

Second Sunday of Advent – December 6 Leader: Light two purple candles.

Once again, as you first light the same purple candle as last week you can sing the song from last week. Then, as you light a second purple candle, you can sing the same melody and add a verse with the word love: Light one candle for love, one bright candle for love, Christ brings light to everyone, He comes, He comes.

All: Sign of the Cross + Leader: Father in heaven, set our hearts ablaze to follow in the steps of John the Baptist. May we bring light and love to all we meet, that the darkness of sin and fear may be overcome. In Christ's name, we ask this. All: Amen. +

SPECIAL COLLECTION RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Help our elders. In good times and bad, senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have dedicated themselves to service and acts of mercy. Today, they pray for an aching world. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left their religious communities without enough retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please be generous.

STEWARDSHIP PLEDGE REMINDER Your 2021 Stewardship Pledge form is due December 21st. If you have already submitted your pledge, thank you! Your support is greatly appreciated. If this is still on your “to do” list, please pick up a pledge form in the Parish Office or find one on https://sj.org/contribute/ today. We are sincerely grateful for your financial support. STOCK DONATIONS When you are considering a stock donation to the Co-Cathedral of St. John, please let us know as the documentation we receive in most cases doesn’t include the name of the donor. SEEDS OF WISDOM STORIES Meet Seme Malish. He is a 16 year old primary six student. He has decided to sit for the Secondary School Entrance Exam in March 2021. Seme is a very smart boy and has most often been tested by his teachers and found capable to work at the primary seven level perfectly. At the moment, he performs better than most of the students in class. He is quite intelligent in all subject areas, but he loves mathematics and science. His parents say that when he is at home, Seme gathers his siblings together, encourages them to study hard and frequently corrects them if they misbehave. Seme loves to go to church and when in the camp, he loves to participate in church activities/programs. When Seme finishes school, he wants to become a medical doctor. Thank you Seme for sharing your love of church, mathematics, science and family with us! This second week of Advent as you light the candle representing 'love' in your Advent wreath, help us remember Seme in prayer.

SAINT NICHOLAS Saint Nicholas was a Christian bishop who helped the needy. After his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. Saint Nicholas was born circa 280 in Patara, Lycia, an area that is part of present-day Turkey. He lost both of his parents as a young man and reportedly used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. A devout Christian, he later served as bishop of Myra, a city that is now called Demre. Over the years, stories of his miracles and work for the poor spread to other parts of the world. He became known as the protector of children and sailors and was associated with gift-giving. The Dutch continued to celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas, December 6. It was a common practice for children to put out their shoes the night before. In the morning, they would discover the gifts that Saint Nicholas had left there for them. Dutch immigrants brought the legend of

Saint Nicholas, known to them as Sint Nikolaas or by his nickname, Sinterklaas, to America in the 1700s. Saint Nicholas went through many transformations in America: Sinterklaas became Santa Claus, and instead of giving gifts on December 6, he became a part of the Christmas holiday. In the 1820 poem "An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore, he is described as a jolly, heavy man who comes down the chimney to leave presents for deserving children and drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. The cartoonist Thomas Nast added to the Saint Nicholas legend with an 1881 drawing of Santa as wearing a red suit with white fur trim. Once a kind, charitable bishop, Saint Nicholas had become the Santa Claus we know today.

PRAYER TO END A PANDEMIC

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of

the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our

suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us,

through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our

petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger,

O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
