A Prayer for the Cathedral Parish during
the Nomination process ...
Holy and eternal God,
You have called each of us to love you
and you have empowered us with gifts
with which we can serve Christ
in the world.
We pray with thanksgiving
for the faithful ministry of laity, clergy,
Deans and Bishops in this congregation
through the years.
We come to you in anticipation of the
appointment of a new Dean
for this Parish and Cathedral Church
in assurance and trust
that you know the needs
of this parish and community.
We ask that your Holy Spirit
would stir the hearts and minds of priests,
that they would place themselves
before Bishop Andrew
for discernment as Dean.
We ask you to bless Bishop Andrew and
the Board of Nomination
with your gift of discernment
as they interview candidates.
Together may they see in each candidate
the gifts you have given them and find the
one priest who you have called to be Dean.
We are your people O Lord,
called to love you,
called to follow Jesus.
Empower us with the gifts that we need
as a whole parish community.
Sustain us with your grace and love
that we may know our calling to follow you
and recognise one another
as fellow disciples on the way.
We ask these things in the name of
Jesus Christ. Amen.

PATRONAL FESTIVAL Today we celebrate the
Feast Day of St John the Evangelist
The church’s tradition that the fourth
evangelist was the apostle John cannot
be conclusively disproved, but it is safer
to deduce what we can about the evan-
gelist from the Gospel itself.
The “disciple whom Jesus loved” may
have been a witness to certain events of
the passion, but is presented as the ide-
al of oneness with Christ.
The actual author of the Gospel seems
to represent a Christian community
whose Jewish ties have been severed;
a community bound together by the re-
ality of Jesus Christ, their whole life
constituted and controlled by their be-
lieving in him.
On 1st February 1863 the first Anglican
church in Napier was consecrated by
the Rt Rev’d Dr Charles Abraham, Bish-
op of Wellington, and named St John
the Evangelist.
The consecration of the current build-
ing Cathedral of St John the Evange-
list was held on the 8th
October 1967,
led by Archbishop Norman Lesser.
We will hold 50th
anniversary celebra-
tions over the weekend of Friday 6th
,
Saturday 7th
, and Sunday 8th
October
2017 - a full programme of events is
currently being planned and will in-
clude a dinner at Ormlie Lodge on the
Saturday evening, and a Choral Eucha-
rist at 10am on Sunday. Mark the dates
in your diaries now!
