AN EVENING WITH AUTHOR NICOLE KEAR, “NOW I SEE YOU”

CLIFTON PARK – The Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library and the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library are co-sponsoring an Evening with Author Nicole Kear on Wed., May 20 at 7pm at the library. This event continues the Friends’ Two Towns-One Book Committee’s 2015 Book of the Year’s theme: Dispelling the Myths of Blindness. At nineteen, Nicole Kear gets a life-changing diagnosis. She is going blind with retinitis pigmentosa, and has about a decade before she will be legally blind. Instead of making preparations, Kear de-cides to make the most of the vision she has left. She joins circus school, tears through boyfriends, travels the world, and through all these hi-jinx, she keeps her vision loss a secret. When Nicole becomes a mother, just a few years shy of her vi-sion’s expiration date, she wants to relish every moment with her kids. And, as her world grows blurred, one thing becomes clear: no matter how hard she fights, she won’t win the bat-tle. But if she shares her secret, and comes to terms with the loss, she can still win her happy ending. Told with humor, the author’s book, Now I See You, is an uplifting story about re-fusing to cower at life’s curveballs, about the power of love to triumph over fear. And, at its core, it’s a story about ac-

ceptance: facing the truths that just won’t go away, and facing yourself, broken parts and all. This event is free and open to the public. Registra-tion is REQUIRED to attend. To register visit www.cphli-brary.org then Calendar of Events or call the Library at 371-8622. Books will be available for purchase at the program by The Open Door Bookstore. A handout of lo-cal resources and services for those with vision impair-ment will be available. Check the TTOB website www.t w o t o w n s o n e b o o k . o r g and Friends website www.friendsofcphlibrary.org for updates.

DID YOU KNOW? A flat roof is more prone to leakage than other roofs, so home-owners may need to routinely inspect their flat roofs for any areas of water penetration. Another way to prevent leaks is to install gutter systems correctly. Gutters should not be hung completely level, but angled toward the roof’s downspouts and drains. This angle will better facilitate water flow.

DID YOU KNOW? Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon transform into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several windows, a door or recessed lighting

in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their energy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can lead to

feelings of sluggishness, which can compromise workout routines. In addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unnecessary items that will only be a distractions during workouts. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mirror, which can help men and women focus on their movements and ensure they are performing exercises correctly. Homeowners building a home gym also should consider finding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on elliptical ma-chines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeown-ers should connect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to find space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a workout.

HOW TO SPOT AN UNHEALTHY TREEPerhaps because they can live for so many years, trees have a way of falling down homeowners’ landscaping priority lists. Trees also tend to be big and strong, so it’s no surprise that they often are overlooked in favor or other areas of a lawn and garden that don’t seem so strong in the face of Mother Nature.

But trees are susceptible to damage and disease, and home-owners who learn to recognize symptoms of such problems can prevent them from escalating and reduce the risk that the trees will cause damage to their properties. The following are just some of the ways homeowners can determine if their trees are unhealthy. Homeowners who suspect they have a tree that poses a safety risk should contact a professional tree service for an immediate inspection and steer clear of the tree until an inspection has been performed.

• Check around the base of the tree. The base of a tree may offer some telltale signs that the tree is unhealthy. Soil that is cracked or raised at the base of the tree may be indicative of a tree that has started to uproot. If you recognize any cracking or if the soil is raised, look at the tree to see if it is leaning. If

the soil is cracked or raised because it is uprooting, then the tree might have already started to lean in the opposite direc-tion of the cracking or raised soil.

• Examine for fungus. The growth of fungus on the tree trunk or close to it may be a sign that the tree is rotting or decay-

ing. Fungal growth, such as a sudden population of mushrooms, around the base of the tree is another sign of decay. If the wood behind fungal growth crum-bles easily, then home-

owners should call a professional tree service, as the fungal problem on the tree has likely already been festering for quite some time.

• Look for cavities on the trunk. Cracks and cavities on a tree may not be an emergency, but especially deep cracks and cavities may be indica-tive of a structural problem. Multiple cracks and cavities also serve as red flags.

• Look for dead wood. It may sound simple, but dead wood poses a threat to the tree and anyone who hap-pens to spend time in its vicinity. Dead wood snaps easily, and falling dead wood can harm anyone unlucky enough to be beneath the

tree when the dead wood snaps. Dead wood branches won’t bend in the wind, and such branches frequently fall off of trees when strong gusts of wind come along. Dead branches either won’t have leaves or the leaves will be brown (dead pine branches will have brown needles).

• Weak connections. Unhealthy trees often have weak con-nections between their branches and their trunks. If branch-es don’t appear to be strongly connected to the tree bark, call a tree service to determine a solution. The tree might not be on its way out, but you may have to take steps to strengthen the connections so branches are not at risk of falling.

Unhealthy trees can pose a significant safety hazard on a property. Homeowners who learn to recognize the signs of unhealthy trees can do something to prevent dying trees from damaging their homes.

Unhealthy trees may need to be removed from a property before they cause significant damage.

10 WAYS TO HELP BEES AND

BUTTERFLIES THRIVE(NAPS)—Here’s news that’s created a buzz. Three-quar-ters of the world’s flowering plants and food crops rely on pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies to help them reproduce.

Unfortunately, bee popula-tions are being threatened by a range of issues such as colony collapse disorder, pesticides, mites, disease and climate change. Butter-fly populations are also at risk.

The good news is that gar-deners can help restore bal-ance by creating habitats that encourage pollinators to thrive.

Bees and butterflies need places to live and breed in, and food to eat. The plants that provide this food also need pollinators to help them reproduce, so planting gardens that are friendly to bees and butterflies is a win-win situation.

Pollination occurs naturally as small creatures forage for food, carrying pollen from plant to plant as they go. That is why it’s important to offer them a “buffet” of at-tractive flowers throughout the seasons, and to have sufficient natural habitats so that they don’t have to travel far to find what they need.

Here are 10 easy ways to help:

1) BEE friendly to bees! Hon-eybees are not aggressive; they sting only as a defense mechanism.

2) Plant trees, shrubs and flowering plants to increase food and shelter for bees and butterflies.

3) Create a seasonal buffet for pollinators by planting perennial flowers with a mix of colors, shapes and scents in containers, window boxes and plant beds.

4) Choose perennials with simple, single rather than double flowers to make nec-tar and pollen more acces-sible to bees and butterflies.

5) Cut and use garden flow-ers for bouquets to encour-

age re-blooming and to pro-long the foraging window for pollinators.

6) Use beautiful native plants such as echinacea, co-reopsis, sunflowers and but-terfly milkweed for at least 75 percent of your garden.

7) Water, weed and fertilize soil appropriately to create a healthy garden that mini-mizes pests and diseases.

8) Provide clean water for in-sects in shallow bowls, bird-baths and ponds, or let fresh water drip over stones.

9) Imperfection is OK! Bees and butterflies may dam-age leaves and flowers while breeding and feeding. Cre-ate areas of natural habi-tat with old stumps, fallen branches and tall grass for nesting.

10) Help convert small par-cels of land into community gardens and green spaces to create closely linked areas for bees and butterflies to visit.

Burpee offers a wide range of seeds and plants that are attractive to bees and but-terflies. All of Burpee’s seeds are Non-GMO.

POWER TOOL SAFETY TIPSPower tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement projects. Professional contrac-tors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost pri-ority when using power tools. Here’s how:

• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use.

• Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition.

• Use the right tool for the job.

• Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or gog-gles.

• Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to protect hands.

• Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud power tools.

• Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials.

• Always check that wires are kept away from blades.

• Maintain a tight grip on a tool.

• Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance.

• Pay attention when working with any power tool.

• Only use attachments specifically recommended for the power tools and ensure proper installation.

• Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.

• Routinely inspect tools for damage.

• Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.

BREAK GROUND WITH THE RIGHT TOOLSThe right tools for the job can be the difference between an interminable landscaping project and one that goes smooth-ly and efficiently. Aspiring landscapers probably have a few shovels and rakes hanging in their garages and sheds for ba-sic landscaping work. But while such tools are effective for certain projects, when it comes to churning soil for garden beds or digging holes for outdoor structures, additional tools come in handy. It may be well worth a trip to a nearby home center to purchase or rent one of these tools ideal for break-ing ground.

Rototiller

A rototiller, sometimes called just a “tiller,” is a powered gar-den tool designed to loosen soil prior to planting. A rototiller also can help aerate soil during the growing season. Because they reduce the need for manual spade digging or hoeing, tillers can be useful landscaping tools, particularly for home-owners who want to work efficiently.

Rototillers will break through tough soil and any plant roots. They come in a variety of sizes, and it’s best to match the tool to the size of the job. Many homeowners can get by with smaller, less powerful models, especially if the tiller is only necessary at the beginning of planting season. Professional landscapers or those with large swatches of property may benefit from larger models.

Auger

Augers, both mechanical and manual, are essentially large drill bits that help move materials from one lo-cation to another. Augers are typically used to cut holes in landscapes, and they are good for post-hole drilling, which is part of the process of installing deck footings, fencing posts or other struc-tures. Augers come in a vari-ety of sizes, and homeown-ers can choose how much power they prefer. Augers can be heavy and cumber-some, and many do-it-your-selfers will find that one-person augers are more than adequate for their projects.

Augers dig deep holes, so it is always smart to have the property surveyed prior to use. This way pipes, gas lines, buried electrical lines, and any other obstructions are clearly identified prior to drilling.

Cultivator

Cultivators are similar to tillers in that they loosen soil. Cul-tivators are effective during the growth period of plants, when they can be used to aerate the soil and remove weeds. Cultivators come in hand-held versions and push models,

and some are even mo-torized. Cultivators get close to plants to remove weeds without disturb-ing the plant. They also are used to stir in com-post or fertilizer.

While many people think cultivators and tillers are the same, that is not the case. The former is less powerful and will mix the soil or stir up the top layer, while the latter can break up moderately hard ground and loosen firm soil.

When using any tools around the garden, wear the proper protection. This includes devices to protect hearing when power tools are in use as well as gloves and safety goggles. Tillers, augers and cultivators have the potential to toss soil and rocks into the air, so make sure others keep their distance while work is in progress.

Proper tools can churn up soil in a short amount of time to make landscaping projects that much easier.

GARDENING POINTERS FOR NOVICESPeople have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for culti-vating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows

homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gar-deners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manage-able and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucum-bers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experi-ment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening cen-ter for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

NOVENAPRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. R.M.R.

GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR HOUSE TO HELP FINANCE YOUR RETIREMENT

(NewsUSA) - Have you forgotten something in figuring where you're going to retire to?

Let's see, you've researched which states tax Social Securi-ty income (only 14, including Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, North Dakota and Vermont).

And you've even consulted the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming).

But here's a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a new report from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in retirement -- what are you doing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help finance your retirement dreams?

"As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there's small margin for error," the New York Times' coverage of the report noted.

Here's some tips for pre-paring what's likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers:

* Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they're your memories. And painful as it may be, it's time to accept that not everyone ap-preciates having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the '69 Mets.

"Buyers shouldn't be distracted from imagining them-selves living in your space," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associ-ate with Sotheby's in Montclair, New Jersey.

* Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Espe-cially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall be-tween the kitchen and an adjoining room just because An-gie's List says creating the feel of more space is "one of the hottest trends in home remodeling."

Well who's to say it'll still be hot in six months or a year?

* Think "curb appeal." There's a reason roof replacement consistently makes Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report, and is up 11.2 percent this year over even last year: A roof is the first thing potential buyers notice -- even

from down the street -- and you've already lost the sale if yours looks like hell.

"It's a huge turn-off," says O'Neill, "and makes people predisposed to find even more things they don't like." For the look of luxury at very affordable prices, check out the Value

Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (www.gaf.com), North America's largest roofing manufac-turer.

* Fix major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with a sputter-ing boiler?

Enough said.

WARNING SIGNS A TIRE IS ABOUT

TO GO FLAT Few drivers will be fortu-nate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one fl at tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient fl ats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out.

But as inconvenient or dan-gerous as fl ats or blowouts can be, they also can be pre-vented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a fl at or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such un-fortunate developments can inspect their tires for the fol-lowing signs.

• Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes

for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.

• Worn tread: Even driv-ers who know little about cars can typically recog-nize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure can employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head up-right. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ fi rst president, then you need to replace

the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.

• Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manu-facturer-recommended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force engines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a car’s fuel effi ciency.

• Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of ex-cessive vibration. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.

• Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physi-cal damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a fl at tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.

Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconve-

Routinely checking tire pressure and infl ating underinfl ated tires is one way drivers can reduce their risk of fl at tires and blowouts.

nient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should rou-tinely inspect their tires for indicators that a fl at or blowout is likely to occur.

DID YOU KNOW? Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can af-fect how prospective buy-ers view their automobiles. For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer war-ranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. That may make a vehicle less at-tractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking

price of the vehicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, in-cluding new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their pr-eowned vehicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to sell-ing their vehicles and show-case the service records to prospective buyers. If not, sellers should be flexible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know that sig-nificant maintenance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.

DID YOU KNOW?Insuring multiple vehicles and/or drivers on an auto insurance policy may prove cheaper than having each of those drivers and vehicles in-sured separately on multiple policies. That’s because insur-ers typically offer bulk rates to policy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/

or drivers on a single policy. But such discounts typically adhere to guidelines that dic-tate eligibility. For example, if the head of a family wants to insure his or her children on the same auto insurance pol-icy he or she has, then those children typically must list their parents’ home as their legal residence. Blood rela-tions also may influence eligi-bility for multiple driver poli-cy discounts. In general, only blood relatives or relatives by marriage can benefit from multiple driver discounts. However, non-related motor-ists who jointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.

Hello, I`m Chloe, a dark tortie gal with big yellow eyes. My front feet have been declawed, so I must be an indoor cat. The shelter is a bit overwhelming for me, so you may find me sleeping under my blankets. If you talk to me I`ll be out for some

petting. I am sweet and like attention. I do have a problem, though: I`m scared to death of noisy little kids. That is why my family brought me to the shelter.

They now have two noisy little ones, and all I could do was hide; I never wanted to come out. Now I am looking for a family where things are quieter so I can be

part of the team again.

Hi, I’m Noah. I just graduated top of my class from the STAR Partnership program at the Albany County Jail. The STAR Program is a partnership with the Albany Co Jail where inmates taught me to sit, come, look, stay and walk nicely

on leash. They were so sad that I graduated and wanted to keep me there forever! I am such a wonderful, loving boy and I’m looking for a home without other

animals so that I can be your shining star! Come and meet me today. I am now all ready for my new loving, forever family!

Frankie

Last of the Litter

Frankie is a sweet and gentle terrier mix about 2-3 years old. He was in a shelter

down south and was going to be euthanized when we stepped forward to save him.

He is a gentle soul who obviously misses his home. Now all we can do is help him find

another to fill the empty space he has in his life. Frankie has had all shots, heartworm

tested, vet checked and more.
