WATERCOLORIST KATE HARTLEY EXHIBITON atNCARTs Second Floor Gallery Spring Exhibits

NorthCountryARTS looks forward to presenting the watercolorsof Kate Hartley at the Glens Falls City Hall's Second Floor Galleryfrom May 4-29, with a reception on May 21, 5-7 pm. The Galleryis located upstairs at 42 Ridge Street in Glens Falls, NYNorth River artist Kate Hartley is best known for her pear paint-ings and for the stained glass mural she designed and createdfor North Creekʼs retaining wall. Kate is inspired by natural, or-ganic form and by the interplay of shadow and light. Once shesaw a pear sitting on a windowsill and it reminded her of peopledancing. The image led her to create the painting “SometimesWhen Iʼm Alone I Dance”. She continued to see human gesturesand various interactions in the organic form and texture of pears. She interprets them as people, but they can still be enjoyed aspear still lifes. Kateʼs watercolors have won many awards andare exhibited at the Furchgotte Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne,VT. & the Sorelle Gallery in Saratoga Springs, NY.In 2010 Kate designed an Adirondack mosaic scene created in

stone and stained glass on 180 ft. of a blank, cement retainingwall in North Creek. Van Goghʼs style of painting was the majorinfluence on this mosaic. The design illustrates typical Adiron-dack activities, rafting, fishing, and skiing among others. Creatingthe mosaic was a community endeavor with over 300 people in-volved. Local students formed fish, leaves, skiers and other fig-ures out of glass pieces the size of coins. Many adults alsocontributed. The mosaic now stands out brightly in the middle ofMain Street.

Did you know?A flat roof is more prone toleakage than other roofs,so homeowners may needto routinely inspect their flatroofs for any areas of waterpenetration. Another way toprevent leaks is to installgutter systems correctly.Gutters should not be hungcompletely level, but an-gled toward the roofʼsdownspouts and drains. This angle will better facili-tate water flow.

Did you know? Biosolids are an organic amendment available to garden-ers. According to the United States Environmental Protec-tion Agency, biosolids are carefully treated and monitoredresiduals formed at sewage treatment facilities. They maybe recycled into fertilizers to stimulate plant growth.Biosolids may help reduce the need for chemical fertiliz-ers. Biosolids can be safe to use, but homeowners shouldbe cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levelsand salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have beentreated to reduce the bacterial content and are approvedfor use in production agriculture. Home gardeners maywant to avoid biosolids in vegetable gardens because ofthe potential for heavy metal content seeping into the pro-duce.

TIPS TO HELP YOU SELL YOUR HOUSE

(NAPSI)—If youʼre considering putting your home on the marketin the coming months, there are a few tips you should follow.

House sales generally peak around June and July, with manyfamilies beginning their home search in the spring, in hopes ofsettling into their new home in time for the next school year.

Itʼs wise to work with a Realtor. According to a survey from theNational Association of Realtors, 88 percent of recent home-sellers used an agent. A Realtor can provide expert advice andcounsel on the selling process, including listing your house onthe Multiple Listing Service (MLS), marketing it to prospectivebuyers and accepting offers and negotiating on your behalf. Tofind a Realtor nearby, go to www.realtor.com/realestateagents.

Know your neighborhood when setting your asking price. Real-tors have real insights in the markets where they do business. ARealtor is your best source for accurate, up-to-date informationand comparable properties to help you determine a competitivelisting price for your home. He or she will give you an idea of howlong homes are staying on the market and at what price theyʼreselling. While itʼs important to get the best possible deal for yourhome, a Realtor will help you understand the importance of pric-ing your house appropriately. Overpricing your home could leadto it staying on the market too long—compelling you to compro-mise on the asking price or terms.

Decide on how to market your home. Given the mass amountsof information available today to consumers, the days of just plac-ing an ad in your local newspaper and putting a “For Sale” signin front of your yard are over. A Realtor® can place your listingon the MLS and work with you to decide other ways to marketyour home. Marketing your listing on a popular real estate web-site such as www.realtor.com will ensure your listing is generatingthe most eyeballs from interested buyers.

If youʼre looking to sell your home as quickly and easily as pos-sible, you could use the real insights youʼll get having a Realtorhelp you through the process of finding interested buyers andeventually closing the deal.

WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, DONʼT IGNORE IT

(NAPSI)—Donʼt take this lightly: One of the most vital signals of an improperly functioning vehicleis the check engine light and, when illuminated, it alerts the driver to a variety of existing potentialproblems. Nevertheless, vehicle checkups during car care events throughout the country revealthat the check engine light is on in nearly one out of 10 vehicles.

Some common malfunctions that can cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faultyoxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If the light flashes, the condition ismore critical and must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may include cat-alytic converter damage.

“When the check engine light comes on, it means that a vehicle system such as the ignition, fuelinjection or emission control is not operating properly, even if the vehicle appears to be runningnormally,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, the source for the “Be CarCare Aware” campaign promoting regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair.

“A glowing check engine light doesnʼt mean you have to immediately pull the car to the side of theroad, but it does mean you should get the car checked out as soon as possible. Ignoring the warninglight could result in costly repairs. At the very least, the light could alert you to an engine problemthat is negatively impacting fuel economy,” he added.

When scheduling service, make sure the automotive shop that examines your vehicle has profes-sional technicians who are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair. The technician willconnect your vehicleʼs computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will indicate why the lightwas activated.

At the same time, the technician can analyze idle speed, throttle response, engine temperature, fuel system pressure, manifold vacuum, exhaust emission levels and many other key indicators.Once the problem is fixed, the carʼs computer is reset to initiate its release process. The technicianshould then be able to tell you what needs to be done and discuss potential warranty coverage andfurther testing, if necessary.Learn MoreFor a free “Car Care Guide” or for further information, visit www.carcare.org.
