SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIRWe had a great time at our annual Book Fair! Thanks to all who helped… I really appreciated all the

help I had at set up day. We had very little time but were up and running by the time the doors opened at 4PM.

We were able to fill some wish list items for our classroom teachers and we also donated books to our school library. Along with those books we were able to pull books for our DEAR program that the PTA does each year at Cleveland. The DEAR program stands for “Drop Everything And Read”! In the spring each student at Cleveland is able to pick out a FREE book to keep. The kids look forward to this each year.

Once again our custodial staff and cafeteria staff pitched in like always and helped make our Book Fair a big suc-cess. Thanks to those family and friends that took part in the “READ-n-FEED” on Friday. It meant a lot that you showed your support for our PTA Scholastic Book Fair.

The following people need to be thanked for helping me out this year. I hope I do not forget any one!!!

SCHOOLS NOW COUNT THE HOURSYou may have seen the recent story on the CRCSD website regarding how the majority of Iowa

schools are now counting the school year in hours rather than days. The change took effect July 1, 2014 and we are now required to provide 1,080 hours of instruction to our students.

Unfortunately parents and students sometimes experience barriers that interfere with receiving those precious hours of instruction. The staff at Cleveland keep a close eye on those barriers and consistently communicate with families who may be experiencing those barriers. A student may be ill, have an appointment, there may be a death in the family or some other barrier that prevents a child from attending school. When this happens communication with the school is critical. Please contact us at 558-2466 if your child will be absent or tardy to school.

This month I will be doing my part to communicate with families when I send attendance letters to families whose children have missed 4 or more days or have been tardy 10 or more times this school year. If you receive one of these letters please feel free to contact me to discuss your child’s attendance and if necessary make a plan for future success in consistent and on-time attendance.

Beginning this month the PBIS Team (Chris Lafrenz, AJ Maiers, Halli Sanford-Ryan, Mindy Suthers, Kellie Landon, Sha Hall, Amber Hansen, and Denise Pape) will provide school wide behavioral data here in the PBIS Corner.

PRIDE postcards are earned when a student goes above and beyond following our PRIDE agreements.

Blue tickets are earned by students when they are showing Cleveland PRIDE. The tickets help teachers and other staff members acknowledge kids for doing the right thing.

Office Referrals are earned when student behaviors are too disruptive to the learning environment for them to remain in the classroom.

N Referrals are a tool teachers use to document student behaviors that do not require office intervention.

PTA CHILDCARE VOLUNTEERS

A big “Thank you” to Maddie and Ashley Davidson for providing childcare for the November PTA meeting and Akira and Jolene So-renson for providing the December childcare!

SETTING GOALSThe month of Janu-

ary is often a month where you hear a lot of people who are setting some personal goals for themselves. Goal setting is a natural part of our daily lives here at Cleveland Elementary as well. In the classrooms you will see and hear students setting both personal goals as well as them working with the class to set classroom goals. This is an important part of learning and our school improvement plan includes this work. When kids know the purpose of their work and have the success criteria clearly stated on how to reach their goals, they tend to learn at higher rates. Don’t forget to ask them about some of the goals they have been setting for themselves!

Special DietsIf your student has a special diet form on file from a previous year

and something has changed, please contact the

Food and Nutrition Office at 558-2305.

BREAKFAST DATE WITH DADThanks to everyone who participated in the Breakfast Date with Dad PTA event held on November

7th in our Cleveland Cafeteria. We had one of our highest turnouts for this event! Students and their guests enjoyed fresh fruit, granola bars and mini muffins as well as great conversation and a chance to meet other members of the Cleveland Community. Door prizes were given to some lucky students. We hope to see you all next year!

As always, this event does not happen without volunteers. THANK YOU to Kristin Boies, Shari Harwood, Angela Breemeersch, Nicole Foster and Al Lauderdale. A special thank you to the Cleve-land PTA for funding this great event. Your time and efforts are much appreciated!
