Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

players and dinked the ball goal bound but it rebounded off the crossbar and back into play much to the disappointment of the fans and players alike. The Owls were in desperate need of a goal but it didn’t seem like it was on the cards as Cooper missed a header from 5 yards out and then Debnam, in a similar move missed from 8 yards out at the back post in the next attack.

However, the homes fans were up on their feet in the 41st minute as Cooper volleyed the ball past the Carlton keeper from the edge of the area following a Robertson cross.

The half ended a few minutes later but not after the visitors had a long-range effort on goal saved by Steer. The Owls knew though that the second half would be tough due to Carlton’s resilience.

The second half started like the first, with a flurry of chances for the Owls. Firstly, Danny Grant tried his luck from 35 yards, in search of his first goal for the Owls, but it was blocked as it looked like it was hitting the target. Secondly, Debnam fired narrowly high and wide following a Danny Grant lofted pass into the channel.

Then, in the 53rd minute Matthew Coleman headed against the crossbar and from the rebound Louis Gant hooked his shot over the bar.

At the other end, Carlton were struggling in front of goal since the break but created a chance in the 57th minute when Ogede-Uzokwe found himself ahead of the last line of defence with the ball and only had Steer to beat. As he bared down on goal and Steer sprinting out to narrow the angle he decided to chip the keeper but he put it wide of the mark with the goal at his mercy.

The Owls had to soak up a bit of pressure from the visitors in the moments following this. However, the Owls broke quickly forward and there were shouts for a penalty as Debnam was clattered to the ground but the referee waved away all the appeals.

Following that, a corner was delivered in from the left hand side and McFarland out

leapt his marker but his bullet header was cleared off the line much to his disappointment.McFarland was in the thick of the action some minutes later as he was beaten to the ball by Ogede-Uzokwe, but as he was about to pull the trigger McFarland made a last ditch tackle. A scramble then ensued with the ball pinging around the pitch but after two further shots on goal were blocked and eventually it was ushered out for a goal kick.

Danny Grant did well linking up with Robertson but shot narrowly over the bar in the 72nd minute as the Owls searched for an equaliser. However, Carlton still pushed forward and looked dangerous on the break with Ogede-Uzokwe going close once more.

Leading scorer Cooper looked to add to his tally with just 14 minutes left but his shot went wide of the mark from a tight angle. Then Robertson tried from a similar position, but this resulted in the same outcome. As the clock ticked down the Owls made three substitutions bringing on Jack Richardson, Nicholas Goodwin and Nathan Emson in replace of Jack Debnam, Matthew Coleman and Louis Grant.

The change of personnel had an immediate impact as the Owls equalised with just four minutes of the 90 remaining. Cooper nodded on a long pass into Robertsons path who raced clear and poked the ball home was the despairing keeper.

Further chances fell to both sides as the clocked ticked over into injury time. Firstly, Cooper shot straight at the keeper from close in then Danny Grant was heroic as he cleared off the line as Hooten nipped in in front of Steer and with the goal gaping his shot was cleared inches in front of the line.

A f a n t a s t i c f l o w i n g m o v e deep into injury time nearly saw a winner for the O w l s a s Robertson’s cross was a toes length away from Cooper as he slid in but missed the ball.

Just 45 seconds later though, the ball was in the back of Carlton’s net a n d Ro b e r t s o n w a s peeling away celebrating l i ke a l i t t l e boy a t Christmas. The ball fell to the youngster inside the

box and he cooly slammed it home with virtually the last kick of the game sending the homes fans into ecstasy in scenes similar to the previous rounds FA Cup clash.

The actual last kick of the game fell to Carlton’s Martin Ball who volleyed just inches over the bar from just outside the area. The final whistle was then blown and scenes of jubilation all around the ground was evident.

THE CONTENTS

Brody Robertson’s brace in the final few minutes of this afternoons FA Cup clash with Carlton Town saw Cleethorpes Town into the next round 3-2. Carlton raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Junior Ogede-Uzokwe. The Owls pulled a goal back thanks to prolific striker Marc Cooper just before the break but the Owls then left it late once again. Robertson scored the equaliser with just four minutes left then deep into injury time, he scored the winner with nearly the last kick of the game. Another great afternoons entertainment for the Owls fans in this seasons FA Cup.

The Owls were much changed from their 3-2 NCEL League Cup midweek win over Penistone Church. The Owls only notable missing compadres were Luke Mascall and Richard Peck who where both unavailable.

The Owls started the game well and nearly had the ball in the back of the net after just two minutes. Jack Debnam forced his way past two Carlton players and laid it off into Cooper’s path but he could only steer his shot wide of the mark. The pressure kept mounting as the Owls pushed forward. Robertson’s run was just not quick enough from a Lee McFarland long ball as he would have been through on goal just 60 seconds later.

With just six minutes gone, the home side had a second clear cut chance and it was Cooper again who it fell to but once again he shot wide of the keepers left hand post.

The fluid play kept coming and when Louis Grant, Cooper and Lawrence Heward all

linked well together in close-knit quarters it looked like the Owls would stroll to victory with the amount of chances that were been created.Chances kept on coming for the Owls as in the 10th minute Robertson played in Louis Grant but he could only blast over the bar from 10 yards. Just 30 seconds later, both Robertson and Louis Grant were involved again but this time it was Robertson who missed from close range however it would not of counted as Louis Grant had fouled the keeper in the build-up.

At the other end, Carlton finally mustered a chance when Aaron Hooton shot on target but Damian Steer had no issues stopping the mid-range shot. The Millers were on the up as they then took the lead.

Ogede-Uzokwe managed to work space just outside the area and curl a shot past Steer totally against the run of play.

Just three minutes later, Carlton should have extended their lead but Ogede-Uzokwe shot straight at Steer making the save routine. The Owls, in the 14th minute should have equalised as Cooper was racing through on goal but he could only toe-poke his effort straight at Luke Cook in the Carlton goal.

Then Ryan Hastie did well on the wing for Carlton against his marker, Heward. He crossed to Ogedi-Uzokwe but his tame shot at the near post was easily collected by Steer.Jack Debnam then tried his luck from 20 yards out after winning the ball back from his opponent but it was rather a tame effort.Just 30 seconds later, Cooper was played in on goal and as he went around the goalkeeper, he was fouled resulting in a penalty kick and a yellow card for Cook. Debnam took the responsibility on his shoulders but he scuffed his shot and it went well wide of the target from 12 yards out.

This did not put the Owls off though as they pushed forward. Cooper rose above his marker and flicked a header on into the path of Robertson but the youngster could only steer his shot wide of the mark.

With the half hour mark reached, the Owls should of fallen further behind as Steer had to scramble backwards to tip a long cross onto the woodwork and behind for a corner.

From the corner, McFarland had to react smartly as the ball was played in low and was goal-bound but he sorted his feet out well and cleared off the line. This was in vein though as just three minutes later, Ogedi-Uzokwe had his second of the game as he volleyed home from 10 yards out.

Nearly from the restart, Alex Flett nearly scored as he danced his way past four Carlton

On Wednesday night we

Worksop Town. The game

was a tight game affair with

all three of the goals we

conceded been avoidable.

But at two one down with

twenty minutes to go we

changed formation and

went for it leaving us a

little open at the back.

Todays opponents, North

Ferriby United are a top top

side who could easily be

playing Conference football

this season after being

unlucky in the Playoffs last

season.

We are massive under dogs

being some 60 places below

them but you never know

it's the FA Cup. We just

need to be at the top of our

game come Saturday.

Wednesday n i ght and

looked good, but he is not

after not playing a lot of

times, like the strike for his

We hope everyone gets

The Owls continued pressing and shortly before the break Mason was brought down in the area with captain D a l e P r a t t c a l m l y slotting home from the spot.

The Owls kept probing for a 3rd to try kill the

2014/15 Lincs League: Away win at Louth in Match one in the Supplementary Cup

Cleethorpes AKP recorded another win against Louth Town reserves having previously beaten them in the league this time in the cup group stages.

Cleethorpes goals all came from Nathan Emson who scored a hat trick in a 3 - 2 win. Emson having also hit the upright in the game could of scored more but the player himself will be pleased to get 90 minutes as he presses for a recall to the first teams starting lineup

The side saw under 18’s player Sam Willett step in and play in goal. Usually a defender he has done well for the under 18’s in goal, and he earned the chance to play in goal for the development side as injuries to Keal and Bailey forced the change.

The scoreline should of been greater, though a return to winning ways for the side will boost their confidence.

Their is no game for the side next week after the Lincolnshire league have allowed a blank weekend to allow the players to attend the first teams FA Cup 2nd round qualifying game against North Ferriby United.

VISITING TEAM

Although football had been played in the village from the turn of the century, North Ferriby United were not formally formed until 1934.  They first took part in the local East Riding Church League and in 1938 won the Division One title.

After the Second World War the club were admitted to the East Riding Amateur League.  The immediate post-war years proved to be very successful with the highlight being an appearance in the final qualifying round of the F.A. Amateur Cup during the 1949/50 campaign.

In 1969 North Ferriby joined Division Two of the Yorkshire League and the following season they captured the championship and also lifted the East Riding Senior Cup.  1975 saw them win the Yorkshire League Cup defeating Lincoln United 2-0 and twelve months later they finished runners up to Emley in Division One. The 1970s were a positive period for the club and saw them win the East Riding Senior Cup three times.

The 1980/81 season was indeed a momentous one.  They reached the lofty heights of the F.A. Cup Third Qualifying Round, losing away to Boston United.

1996/97 saw the villagers achieve the ambition of every English Club with an appearance at Wembley Stadium.  A 3-1 aggregate victory over Guisborough Town in the semi-final saw them through to the F.A. Carlsberg Vase Final on Saturday 19th May 1997. A 3-0 defeat by Whitby Town only partially marred their great day and their name is now proudly entered in the record books.

The next two seasons saw Ferriby only a whisker away from promotion to the Unibond League, but in the 1999/2000 millennium season they won the Northern Counties East League Championship and achieved their long term goal of promotion.

The first season in the Unibond League was a satisfactory start at that level with a respectable 13th place finish.

Season 2001/02 saw the club's progression continue with an 11th place finish.  The campaign finished on another high as the club retained the East Riding Senior Cup for a sixth year in succession, thus equalling the all-time record held by Hull City in a period which straddled the Second World War.

The following season saw more progress, gaining a place in the promotion play-offs via a fourth place finish.  Although the promotion push floundered on a tense evening at Radcliffe, that disappointment was assuaged by the club taking the outright record from Hull City with a seventh successive East Riding Senior Cup triumph.

The 70th Anniversary Season 2004/05 proved to be one of the most rewarding in the club's history as the villagers clinched the Unibond League First Division Championship on the final day of the season at Mossley.  The side led the division from early October and never relinquished their grip on top spot.

Season 2005/06 saw the club at the highest level in their history as they entered the Unibond Premier Division and led the table from the off until March.  Despite missing out on automatic promotion, the club came close to joining Champions Blyth Spartans in the Conference North as they secured a place in the promotion play-offs thanks to a fifth place finish.  They defeated third placed Frickley Athletic away from home before losing the final by the odd goal in three at Farsley Celtic after extra time.

VISITING TEAM

North Ferriby successfully defended the East Riding Senior Cup in season 2007/08 with a 4-1 victory over Hall Road Rangers and again in 2008/09, overcoming Bridlington Town 3-1.

The club enjoyed a superb season in 2009/10, finishing 4th in the Unibond Premier Division, their highest ever position. Dreams of promotion to the Blue Square North were shattered however, when the villages went down 2-1 to Boston United in the play-off semi final. But silverware was forthcoming when the East Riding Senior Cup was retained following a 3-2 victory over Bridlington Town at the KC Stadium.

2010-11 saw the surprise and unexpected departure of manager Neil Allison who emigrated with his family to Australia. The Club had no hesitation in appointing his assistant John Anderson to the manager's role and he went on to lead The Villagers to a second successive play-off semi final, only to be denied 0-2 at Colwyn Bay. But Hall Road Rangers were beaten in the final of the East Riding Senior Cup as Ferriby retained the cup 3-1 in the KC Stadium.

A poor start to the 2011-12 season saw the resignation of John Anderson.    The current managerial team of Billy Heath and Mark

Carroll was appointed in October 2011 following the resignation of John Anderson. Heath and Carroll turned round the team's performances and the side eventually finished ninth on the Evostik Premier division.  The Club won its first cup at this level, beating Rushall 4-1 in the Doodson Sport League Cup.

The 2012-13 season was the most successful in the Club's history. The side completed the League and Cup double and won the East Riding Senior Cup.  Coincidentally, the side  emulated the  2004-05 performance  of leading  the table from early October to the end of the season. The team also equalled a long-standing Premier Division record by winning 16 away games. Ferriby became only the third team to retain the League Cup and the fifth to complete the NPL Title and Cup double.

The Villagers inaugural season in Conference North was truly remarkable. Having finished runners up, missing out on promotion on the last day, they also enjoyed excellent runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy before ultimately signing off with another Senior Cup victory.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WE'RE TRYING TO SOLVE?Cleethorpes Town F.C. were unfortunately the victims of a crime last week, we have had our goal posts stolen and are looking to the community to help us in funding of our attempts to purchase new Goal posts for the club and repair previous damages caused by the vandalism to our dugouts and perimeter fences.WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT THIS PROJECT?The club know how important its games are to the community and we need to get this problem addressed as soon as possible to avoid possible postponements to future games due to the lack of goal posts at our disposable.HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?The whole amount of money raised will go into the buying of the new goal posts, fences and dugouts surrounding our pitch.WHEN WILL WE SEE THE DIFFERENCE?The supporters will see an immediate difference as the goal posts, fencing required and dugouts will be purchased as soon as the adequate funding has been achieved for each.

“... it was a learning curve in terms of training methods, preparing for games and deal ing with a higher level of player...”

FACT FILE:

Dave, how did you get into management? Have you got any coaching badges? No coaching badges, I enjoy managing players, creating a structure and the man-to-man management side of the role more than coaching.  I became player-manager at Grimsby Borough reserves following the resignation of the current manager, was great fun and a learning experience (especially trying to manage Matty Powell!!!), I managed to stabilise the team, bring in some new, young players and improve performances and league position so a successful time that gave me a taste for management

Did you used to play, and what level did you play at and what position? I played at North East Counties div 1 level as a centre half, the majority of my playing days was lincs league an extra yard of pace would have helped!

How was the transition between playing and managing? Quite natural really, I enjoy the responsibility and challenge.

You were joint managers with the reserve side during the 2012-13 campaign, did you enjoy this and what did you get out of it?We (Matty and I) came to the club to progress and develop as managers/coaches, to work at a club that was professional, well-structured and geared for success.  We quickly identified the quality, young players we had worked with who we wanted to bring to the club. Players who had the potential to improve and progress through to the 1st team, that was a key part of our job.  We finished 4th, played some great, attacking football but didn’t quite realise the potential we had.  If we had carried on for another season we would have been targeting the league title as a realistic goal, but we are extremely proud to see the likes of Lee McFarland, Jack Richardson, Brody Robertson and Reece Newell progress from our reserve side into 1st team players, that is the true measure of success for any reserve team to feed the 1st team with talent.

Was there a big change between the reserve and 1st team?Yes, in terms of professionalism. As reserve team managers we set our own high standards, did the best we could with the resources we had available in terms of preparing for games and creating a successful environment for the players, this proved a good grounding for the step up to the 1st team.  But it was a learning curve in terms of training methods, preparing for games and dealing with a higher level of player and being able to help improve them. The lads have been great and we would like to feel we have brought some decent banter to the 1st team set-up, something that was maybe lacking in previous seasons, its important the lads enjoy what they are doing in order to perform at their best.

How is working with Marcus? Does he let you express yourself and ideas?Marcus is a top manager, the lads, staff and all involved with the club have the upmost respect for him and rightly so. Going from manager to assistant took some adjustment, but the gaffer involves us in squad and team selection and brings us in where he feels it is right to add value to the messages he is getting across in team talks and during training.

Why do you think we was so successful last season? We have good players, they won the league. We just ensured they were supported and encouraged to go realise their potential on the pitch.  The quality and depth of our squad was another massive factor.

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you went through? It is a massive achievement, the players take huge credit for what they achieved.  When you put the time and effort into something and get the rewards it’s an unbelievable feeling of pride and that is the key emotion, we are so proud of our achievement and of the players for delivering this for the club. Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is? He knows what to say at the right time, reads the game really well and explains what he wants from the players.  The gaffer is just simply the best man for the job, the only man who could have delivered the success last season.  He manages with honesty and the players respect that, but they also know not to cross him!

What are you thoughts on the season so far? Excitement, its great to be in a new league and to test our players.  We know little about the league and the teams involved, so we see this season as a learning curve to provide a platform from which to keep building.

What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion? Let’s play some great football, improve as a team, see our players develop and see where that gets us.

Lastly, tell us about your favourite game you've managed so far for the Owls?Well, we’ll ignore the Morpeth Town game where me and Matty oversaw a 5-1 loss shall we! So I would say Shirebrook away, the gaffer put his faith in me and Matty that night to get a result as he couldn’t make the game.  Shirebrook are always tough, especially in a mid-week away game so we were delighted to come away with a narrow win by the odd-goal.  A result that kept our momentum and gave us great belief for challenges ahead.
