Career Summary: I've served 2 terms as Med Staff president. I was President of the Illinois Surgical Society and Program Chair twice for the Illinois Chapter of the ACS. The most unexpected was being named one of the "40 for 40" in celebration of the Med School's 40th anniversary. Memorable moments and activities in medical school: All the fun we had in Carbondale. The dorm was an amazing experience. Most interesting/remarkable thing(s) I’ve done since medical school: 8 days backpacking in Alaska with Mark Schmelzel.

Memorable moments and activities in medical school: My clearest memory is of the dorm in Carbondale, meeting everyone that first summer and

remembering the wonderful friendships we made.

Most interesting/remarkable thing(s) I’ve done since medical school: Raising a mentally ill daughter and learning to cope with schools, counselor, psychologists, residential

programs, all while working.

Wonderful experience every day – no PTSD from med school to deal with, unlike many other colleagues,

thus gives a more secure footing for all that comes later.

Currently I read, write, paint and do wildlife illustration with an occasional round of golf and forays in the plains of South Dakota chasing pheasants. Career Summary: I guess I am proud that I essentially became triply boarded (general urology, pediatric urology and a member of the the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, there were no boards for solid organ transplant in 1989). I spent 26 years at the Marshfield Clinic providing tertiary surgical care in a rural setting and count many of my former patients as close friends. Memorable moments and activities in medical school: I think that it started a true understanding of the concept of camaraderie that persisted through my residency, fellowship and throughout my practice. Things always were more tolerable, less threatening, easier to learn and funnier while being part of a team. I retired 3 and a half years ago and I don't miss being in the operating room, clinic and definitely don't miss call! I do miss my team and that whole interaction. I learned that as an MSI. Most interesting/remarkable thing(s) I’ve done since medical school: I kept focusing on different areas throughout my career. I started as a transplant surgeon, switched to principally doing urologic oncology and finally ended my career as a pediatric urologist (even obtained my board certification at age 54). In the process of these changes, Gail and I remained head over heels in love, raising 2 great kids, 4 dogs and making many wonderful friends along the way. I would not change anything about my life or career. There have been no regrets! Top reason(s) I’m glad I graduated from SIU SOM:

There was an underlying mantra at SIU-Med that we were different. We didn't have grades, no AOA

chapter (then), we were in a 3 year program, we were primary practice focused (not all of us followed

that path obviously) etc., etc. As a result I never took myself too seriously. I took what I did and how I

did it extremely seriously but myself, not so much. I also got to meet Steve Curry!

Memorable moments and activities in medical school: Pulling all-nighters studying for multiple module exams in Carbondale Most interesting/remarkable thing(s) I’ve done since medical school: Got married, raised 3 kids, have made 5 mission trips to Peru, didn't get sued until 6 months before I retired Top reason(s) I’m glad I graduated from SIU SOM:

We were much more well rounded individuals than those from other medical school that I have

encountered.
