Students will understand how the events of the CivilWar shaped the late nineteenth century and how those
events continue to affect the world today.
Unit Summary:
What kinds of activities, projects, formative and summative assessments will students
be involved in?
This unit is for a fifth grade social studies classroom. I have just finished a unit onslavery and the Underground Railroad. We are now progressing into the events of the
Civil War. I will discuss the causes and effects of the war, influential individuals whobecame famous for their contributions to the war or surrounding cultural issues,
famous battles that took place and how they impacted history, important legislationthat arose from the war, and the modern day effects the war has on U.S. society. I willengage the students in a timeline activity, the acting out of a play, an autobiography
as a famous Civil War contributor, and several others. I will use quizzes, diary entries,and exit cards as formative assessments. Students will complete a summative
assessment at the end of the unit that requires them to distinguish the most importantevents and individuals of the Civil War and how those events and individuals have
influenced modern day society.
