Fire restoration is also about to get underway using the dry ice removal technique. This specialized technique minimizes the damage to the remaining wood. Engineering and Architectural drawings are being finalized for tender. A second tender contract will include the works required to accommodate the future programming needs for the eventual use of the historical train station buildings. Second Go Train Stop An extensive public consultation process was completed resulting in key recommendations for the site. These recommendations will guide future redevelopment of the site and ensure that the end product is a signature development that will maintain the historic train station buildings in public ownership through their protection and restoration and allow people to come together and gather at the waterfront. It will provide areas of various retail consumer services, cultural programming events and an opportunity to utilize the public transit system close to Barrie’s City’s Centre at the future Barrie Waterfront Go Train Stop. The consulting firm of R.J. Burnside and Associates Limited was awarded the tender for the design and construction of the second Barrie GO transit train station development. GO anticipates construction to begin in September 2010, with train service to be fully operational by the Spring of 2011. Exciting Commercial/Retail Development City Council has approved the retention of the historic Allandale Train Station Buildings in public ownership, including a no development zone in front of the buildings providing a panoramic view of the Kempenfelt lakeshore. CGC Group is preparing Concept Redevelopment Plans for the lands to be submitted for staff review and Council endorsement before moving forward with negotiations, agreements and final designs. Council has also passed a motion requesting that staff in the Infrastructure, Development and Culture Division be requested to move forward with negotiations with the Correct Group of Companies (CGC) for the development of the Allandale Station lands (excluding the Allandale Train Station Building and GO Transit Platform) and report back to General Committee. The coming months will also see a job-fair in Barrie that will ultimately bring 500 or more new jobs for subcontractors, suppliers, operators and tenants who will be an integral part of the construction, development and final uses of the project. At the end of it all, when the dusty construction is complete and the ribbon is cut, the Allandale Station lands will again become the iconic symbol on Barrie’s Waterfront that it once was in the early 1900’s.
