A Message from Fr. Chris—

The Reality of the Resurrection By Pope Benedict XVI

Indeed, the apostolic preaching with all its boldness and passion would be unthinkable unless the witnesses had experienced a real encounter, coming to them from outside, with something entirely new and unforeseen, namely, the self-revelation and verbal communication of the risen Christ. Only a real event of a radically new quality could possibly have given rise to the apostolic preaching, which cannot be explained on the basis of speculations or inner, mystical experiences. In all its boldness and originality, it draws life from the impact of an event that no one had invented, an event that surpassed all that could be imagined. . . All of us are constantly inclined to ask the question that Saint Jude Thaddeus put to Jesus during the Last Supper: Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world? (Jn 14:22) Why, indeed did you not forcefully resist your enemies who brought you to the cross? - we might well ask. Why did you not show them with incontrovertible power that you are the living one, the Lord of life and death? Why did you reveal yourself only to a small flock of disciples, upon whose testimony we must now rely? The question applies not only to the Resurrection, but to the whole manner of God’s revelation in the world. Why only to Abraham and not to the mighty of the world? Why only to Israel and not irrefutable to all the peoples of the earth? It is part of the mystery of God that he acts so gently, that he only gradually builds up his history within the great history of mankind; that he becomes man and so can be overlooked by his contemporaries and by the decisive forces within history; that he suffers and dies and that, having risen again, he chooses to come to mankind only through the faith of the disciples to whom he reveals himself; that he continues to knock gently at the doors of our hearts and slowly opens our eyes if we open our doors to him. And yet—is not this the truly divine way? Not to overwhelm with external power, but to give freedom, to offer and elicit love. And if we really think about it, is it not what seems so small that is truly great? Does not a ray of light issue from Jesus, growing brighter across the centuries, that could not come from any mere man and through which the light of God truly shines into the world? Could the apostolic preaching have found faith and built up a worldwide community unless the power of truth had been at work within it? . . . He is alive. Let us entrust ourselves to him, knowing that we are on the right path. With Thomas, let us place our hands into Jesus’ pierced side and confess: My Lord and my God! (John 20:28)

His Holiness Benedict XVI reigned as pope from 2005 to 2013

Congregation of Sisters of Merciful Jesus

Thus, to fittingly observe Divine Mercy Sunday in a solemn way, we should-

1. Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter 2. Sincerely repent all of our sins 3. Place our complete trust in Jesus 4. Go to Confession, preferable before that Sunday 5. Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast 6. Venerate the Image of the Divine Mercy (To venerate a sacred image or statue simply means

to perform some act or make a gesture of deep religious respect toward it, because of the person whom it represents—in this case, our Most Merciful Savior.

7. Be Merciful to others, through our actions, words, and prayers on their behalf

Prayer of consecration of your Family to Divine Mercy O Merciful Jesus, You showed us Your infinite compassionate love by exhausting the very last drop of blood and water from Your body. From this day forward, with full confidence, we entrust our families to Your Divine Mercy. We abandon our past, our present and our future. We place into Your wounds all our wounds which are caused by lack of love, forgiveness, understanding and trust. Jesus, expel Satan and all evil from our families, free us from the consequence of sin and protect us from further harm. Heal our wounds. May our families learn to venerate your Divine Image that they will never perish but experience Your loving mercy. Jesus, we trust in You! Amen

AND DON’T FORGET - The most special grace promised by our Lord for Mercy Sunday is nothing less than the equivalent of a complete renewal of baptismal grace in the soul: “complete forgiveness (remission) of sins and punishment.” Such a measure of grace can only be received otherwise through baptism itself, or through making a sacramental confession as an act of perfect contrition for sin, out of pure love for God.

I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy (1109).

Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (300).

Blessed Feast of Divine Mercy to All!

Proper Preparation for the Feast of Divine Mercy!

Going to Confession is not the only way we should prepare ourselves for Divine Mercy Sunday. As Cardinal Francis Macharski, then Archbishop of Cracow, Poland, explains in a 1985 pastoral letter, we are not simply

called to ask for God’s mercy with trust. We are also called to be merciful: Our own merciful attitude is likewise a preparation. Without deeds of mercy, our devotion would not be real. For Christ does not only

reveal the mercy of God, but at the same time He places before people the demand that they conduct themselves in life with love and mercy. Pope John Paul II states that this requirement constitutes the very

heart of the Gospel ethos (Rich in Mercy, 3) — it is the commandment of love and the promise: ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy’ (Mt 5:7). Let it be a mercy that is forgiving and true, and universal,

with good words, deeds, and prayer for others!

Our Lord’s words to St. Faustina about this requirement to be merciful are very strong and leave no room for misinterpretation: Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but

there must also be acts of mercy. … I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must

not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it (742).

The gifts, graces, and mercies of the Red Door are innumerable! Every day countless blessings can be experienced in the

ministry both through the people we have the privilege to serve as well as through the generous volunteers who come to serve them. Such is the case with a wonderful mother and son team who volunteer on a weekly basis...Terri and Patrick Fitzgerald. Every week, Terri and Patrick arrive at the Red Door first thing in the morning with smiles, lots of joy, and a bag full of home-made cookies… delicious cookies made with love for our Red Door guests. Please read Terri's reflection on their experience as volunteers, and what's more, their experience of our Lord's infinite and unconditional Divine Mercy: My son Patrick and I began volunteering at the Red Door last September. Patrick lives with autism. Although he is happy and loving, his communication skills are limited and for his own safety he requires constant supervision. Yet my husband and I wanted Patrick to do something where he is productive and appreciated and the Red Door seemed like a nice opportunity. Patrick and I were welcomed with open arms by Heidi and the rest of the staff. Patrick’s pleasant demeanor and incredible work ethic has been appreciated by everyone. I also knew that by serving the less fortunate, Patrick could be the conduit of God’s mercy that the Divine Mercy challenges us to be. What surprised me was how that same mercy was reflected back to Patrick through the individuals whom the Red Door serves. These people, often so marginalized, are delighted to have the opportunity to shower Patrick with a

certain kindness and mercy that can only come from our Heavenly Father. It’s no wonder that Patrick’s favorite day of the week is his “Red Door Day.”

Friends of St. Benedict the Moor School, Our students have been preparing their hearts for Easter this Lent. During Holy Week, our students led and participated in a Stations of the Cross reflection. Students in Señorita Pendleton’s Spanish classes also learned Easter vocabulary words in Spanish and discussed Holy Week traditions celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. Holy Week is called “La Semana Santa” in Spain. Catholic religious brotherhoods in Spain perform penance processions on the streets of almost every Spanish city and town during this sacred time. We hope you’ve had a blessed Lent and a wonderful Easter! Your Principal, Lauren Rudy

A Meditation on Divine Mercy By Blessed Columba Marmion

It is not our perfection which is to dazzle God, Who is surrounded by myriads of angels. No, it is our misery, our wretchedness avowed which draws down His Mercy. All God’s dealings with us are a consequence of His Mercy (Mercy is Goodness touched by the sight of misery). And that is why the great Saint Paul says, let others go to God leaning on the perfection of their life, but “for me, I take glory in my infirmities that my strength may be Christ’s virtue.”

If you could only once understand that you are never dearer to God, never glorify Him more than when in the full realization of your misery and unworthiness, you gaze at His infinite goodness and cast yourself on His bosom, believing in faith that His Mercy is infinitely greater than your misery.

Saint Paul tells us that God has done all in laudem et gloriam gratiae suae, “for the praise and glory of His grace.” Now the triumph of His grace is when it raises up the miserable and impure and renders them worthy of Divine union… He is a spouse infinitely rich and powerful, and when He chooses a poor little child like you to be His bride His joy is to enrich her poverty, and clothe her with His own beauty.

FIRST COMMUNION SUNDAY

SAINT BENEDICT THE MOOR

Most Pittsburghers have been getting ready for Sunday, May 5th by stretching their legs, running long distances, and loading up on carbs. But at St Benedict the Moor, we have had eight children gearing up for Sunday, May 5th by reading Sacred Scripture, learning the teachings of the Catholic Church, attending Mass, and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. While most of Pittsburgh will either be at home enjoying their Sunday coffee, running vast distances through our city streets, or cheering on the 40,000+ marathon runners, St Benedict the Moor will be gathering as always to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and support our children who are receiving our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament for the very first time! The Marathon comes and goes each year with much pomp and celebration. It is a very exciting day and a great gift to our city! But for our children who will be receiving their first Holy Communion, they will be receiving the greatest gift of their lives when at last they eat the bread from heaven which gives life to the world! Let us make every effort to come out in support of them! Having said that, it is not easy to get to St Benedict the Moor on Marathon Sunday. It requires much planning ahead. This is why we have included the map above with the marathon route outlined in black and the many routes that you can take to get to St Benedict the Moor in red. A larger map is also available for you in the St Benedict the Moor bulletin. The key is getting to Centre Ave. You can do so from Liberty Bridge (Northbound), Blvd of the Allies (traveling West via Crosstown Blvd), 376 Westbound, 279 Southbound (Veterans Bridge), 28 Southbound (Veterans Bridge), and from Bigelow Blvd (if you live inside the Marathon route). We hope to see everyone on Sunday, May 5th at St Benedict the Moor for First Communion Sunday!
