CINEMA SURVEY Results Analysis

WHY HAVE I MADE A CINEMA SURVEY?

The reason I have made a cinema survey is to find out more about my target audience in order to produce a film and trailer that is most suited to them. In order to do this I need to know about what interests them, what bores them, what they want to see and what they don’t want to see. I can do this through finding out about what they usually watch and why they like it. Therefore, my survey will hopefully enable me to make more/easier decisions in relation to planning and producing the trailer as I have a deeper understanding towards my target audience.

WHAT GENDER ARE YOU?

From this screenshot that I have put on the right, you can see that 51 people have answered my first survey about cinemas and that majority of people who took the survey were female.

This is ok, because although we are hoping that our film and trailer will intrigue both sexes to come and see it, we are primarily basing our target audience on females as the theme of romance and drama is more stereotypically suited towards them.

HOW OLD ARE YOU?

People who answered my survey were primarily between the ages of 16 and 20 as 35 of the 50 people who answered where in that category. Although this means that the survey is primarily based on 5 similar ages, that is a big portion of the age group we’re targeting.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

This question isn’t as important as other questions in this survey as it is less relevant. However, it does have a certain amount of importance as it shows the variety of people, with different income, who go to the cinema and what sort of things they watch. From these results; it suggests that even people who are less likely to have any income or very small, such as ‘students’ and ‘unemployed’ people, still go to the cinema as well as people with higher incomes such as a ‘teachers’ and people involved in ‘health care’. This means we are able to widen our target audience without worrying as much about whether or not they can afford to see the film or if only certain ‘classes’ of people like certain genres.

It is clear from the excel screenshot of the grid I made that 30 out of the 50 people (60%) who took the survey were students, which is due to peers from school doing the survey to help my coursework, as well as the fact that most people I am friends with on Facebook (which is where I advertised my survey) are students.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO THE CINEMA?

I have added this question to the survey in order to find out about what cinemas people go to most; and from the excel grid I made, you can clearly see that the most popular is ‘Empire’, ‘Odeon’, ‘Cineworld’ and ‘Vue’, with ‘Palace’ close behind.

This shows that although many people (majority in this case) go to big cinemas such as Odeon, Cineworld and Empire, nearly the same amount go to small, independent, town cinemas such as Palace cinema. This then means that although it may be seen that you will only get the most cinema views by screening in big chain cinemas, small more independent cinemas can also get the views; meaning we could screen our film in smaller cinemas which may fit better due to the mental issues and social realism links to our film.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO TO THE CINEMA?

This graph show that majority of people who answered my survey, tend to go to the cinema once every other month. This could be due to anything; money, location or merely not seeing anything advertised that they want to see.

Yet, although the higher bars on the graph are the less frequent visits to the cinema, there are a few people who go to the cinema on very regular bases of at least once a month.

I have asked this question as it might help determine how long to keep the film showing in the cinema or when the film would be released to make sure as many people could see it as possible. For example a half term, where more people, such as students, would have time to see it.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO TO THE CINEMA?

Above shows the exact amount of people who have ticked what answers. The highest box ticked was the ‘once every other month’ box, with 15 people ticking that.On the right are the answers that were added to the ‘other’ box, showing what other people have put. Many of these answers showed that they only went ‘once a year’ or ‘when a really good film was out’. The second answer that came up more than once is more vague so harder to analyse as it depends on peoples personal taste, which will be explored more throughout the other questions.

WHO DO YOU GO TO THE CINEMA WITH?

This question is important to know how far to widen the target audience.

From this graph you can see that most people who answered my survey tend to go with friends (41 out of 51) or family (34 out of 51). It is less common for people to go by themselves which is clear from the graph below as only 1 person said they did.

From this data we can see that our film needs to be a film which people would want to go and see and experience with their friends while also being able to make it as family friendly as possible. However, due to the issues that could be raised in our film such as mental illness and death we still have to be careful, more likely rating it as a 12A in cinemas.

DO YOU WATCH TRAILERS IN THE CINEMA, IF YES, WHY?

As this was a fill in box question, there is no graphs, so instead I have taken the majority answer which is ‘yes’ and made an excel grid showing the ‘if yes, why?’ sections of the answer.

Before even analysing the data, the fact that all bar 3 people answered yes, shows that when advertising our film, that we should screen our trailers in the cinemas before other films while people are waiting to watch a film.

31 out of 51 people answered because it informs you about what films are about to be released, while 11 people stated that they only watched them because they have to.

Only 3 people answered no to this question.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU SAW IN THE CINEMA?

This question has been asked to show the most popular genres that are being watched at the moment in the cinema.

On the left I have made a excel grid of the most common films that were named while answering this question as many films were named just once.

The film that came up the most is the newly screening film Legend which is a British Crime Thriller, which was the most recently watched film in the cinema for 5 people. While 4 people, had seen the new British Comedy Bad Education: The Movie.

Like Legend, other action thrillers were mentioned such as The Scorch Trials, in the same way other comedies such as Ted 2 and Paper Towns (which is also classed as a drama) was mentioned.

Another common genre was animation (Minions and Inside Out).

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING GENRES HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE CINEMA? (IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS)

This question very much links to the question asked just before as it is finding out about the most common genres watched in the recent past.

From this you can automatically see that the less popular film genres are western, documentary, historical, horror, mystery, war, with sport and western being the worst, with no views from the last 6 months.

The most common film genres viewed in the cinema over the past 6 months are comedies (33), actions (23), romances (20), drama (17).

Page 13: Cinema survey

This graph is useful as it shows that romances and dramas are some of the more popular genres to watch in the cinema, which is clearly useful as our film is hopefully going to fit under the drama/romance genre.

AND FINALLY TO SUMMARIES WHAT I HAVE LEARNT THROUGH THIS SURVEY

• My target audience will primarily be females as they tend to watch and enjoy dramas/romances more than males.• The target audience will be primarily between ages 16-25 however it will still be made to fit people as young as 12 and also older than 25. But due to the survey being answered by 16-20 year olds more than any other age, I have a better understanding of that age than any others, no only because of the information provided by the survey but also because I myself fit into that age category. • Make the film as appealing to family and friend grouping as possible, which is easier to do with the drama/romance genre.
