PASTOR’S PEN

often demonstrated principle of life. This, of

course, is not to say that trouble automatically

brings out our best. I am saying that if we have

within us anything approaching the spirit of Christ,

we can make trouble bring out our best. Trouble

by itself is neutral. It can do almost anything to a

person. It can make him bitter and resentful; it can

make him hard and cruel; it can plunge his life into

despair and wreck his faith on the rocks of futility.

But trouble does that only to people who let it

do that.

It is nonsense to call an unruffled life the ideal. If

our vocabulary did not have in it words like

trouble, adversity, calamity and grief, then, our

vocabulary by no possibility could have in it words

like courage, fortitude, patience and sacrifice. He

who knows no struggle will know no strength; he

who faces no calamity will need no courage.

Mystery though it is, those traits of character

that we most admire are found in greatest

abundance in those lives with a strong mixture of

adversity. Are you faced with a tough situation

today? If not today, you will be tomorrow, or

some tomorrow. Then listen to Jesus, “Stand erect, lift up your head!” Live triumphantly in

troubled times because your redemption will be

nearer than you know.

One of the most common attitudes in life is a

negative reaction to trouble. It is almost

universally believed that ease and comfort

constitute the ideal life. Conversely, trouble is

viewed as an intruder to be avoided at almost any

cost. And when it cannot be avoided, then, at

best, it must be endured. But the Scriptures

confront us with a totally different attitude toward

adversity. In our Gospel reading for today,

Jesus speaks of a troubled time, a time of natural

calamity and international turmoil. Then,

concerning that time, Jesus admonishes this

reaction: “Straighten your backs and lift up your heads because your redemption is drawing near.”

Trouble is so much a part of life. Given the

options, most of us would choose to spend our

days in ease and comfort; but few, if any are

allowed to exercise that option. The evolving

circumstances of life so often dictate otherwise.

We don’t get to live it on the basis of a first

choice. Trouble comes and builds banners and

dictates detours; and the critical issue becomes

our ability to handle disappointment and cope

creatively with problems. The person who is

not prepared to face trouble is not prepared to

face life.

The adverse element of life can be very painful

and tragic. Jesus understood that life can be and

often is a fearful proposition. He knew the

meaning of trouble because He experienced it

Himself. To be misunderstood was His daily fare.

He knew, not only the wrath of His enemies, but

the disloyalty of His friends. His death on the cross

was not something staged like a divinely directed

passion play. It was the very real agony of a very

real man. So, Jesus knew firsthand the pain, the

sorrow, the tragedy of trouble.

Conceding the point that trouble can be tragic, we

must also recognize that trouble can be useful. I

know that is easier to say than it is to practice, but

it is nonetheless true. Jesus said, “When you find yourself in the very midst of trouble, straighten your back and lift up your head because your redemption is drawing near.” Resent it and

resist it though we will, there is something

redemptive about trouble. This is a well-known,

FORTY HOURS DEVOTION

ADVENT: OUR PARISH’S FORTY HOURS

We hope that our previous articles about the 40 Hours Devotion have enkindled in each of you a desire to

grow spiritually and participate in some aspect of Epiphany Church’s 40 Hours Devotion.

Following the opening Mass on December 9 at 6:00 PM, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all day and

night in the main church. The Blessed Sacrament cannot be left unattended when it is exposed. We are

counting on our parishioners to devote an hour of adoration during the 40 hours of exposition. We have

sign-up sheets at all entrances for you to promise an hour of your time.

The specific way that Jesus asks you to love him in return is to spend one quiet hour with him in the Blessed

Sacrament. We hope that you will not only commit to one hour of adoration, but that you will also attend

many other events planned for the 40 hours - including the Holy Mass of Exposition on December 9 at 6:00

PM and the closing Ceremony, December 11 at 7:30 PM. A detailed schedule of events is included on the back

of the bulletin.

SIX REASONS FOR WANTING TO SPEND ONE HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

1. He is really there! “I myself am the living bread come down from heaven.” (Jn 6:35)

2. Day and night Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament because of His infinite love for you!

“Behold I will be with you always even to the end of the world,” because “I have loved you with an

everlasting love, and constant is my affection for you.” (Mt 28:20; Jer 31:3)

3. The specific way that Jesus asks you to love him in return is to spend one quiet hour with him in the

Blessed Sacrament. “Where your treasure is, there is your heart....” “Could you not watch one

hour with me?” (Mt 6:21; 26:40)

4. When you look upon the Sacred Host, you look upon Jesus, the Son of God. “Indeed, this is the will of

my Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life. Him

I will raise up on the last day.” (Jn 6:40)

5. Each moment that you spend in His Eucharistic Presence will increase his divine life within you and

deepen your personal relationship and friendship with him. “I have come that you may have life,

and have it more abundantly.” “I am the vine and you are the branches. Whoever remains in me

and I in him shall bear much fruit because without me, you can do nothing.” (Jn 15:5)

6. Each hour you spend with Jesus will deepen his divine peace in your heart. “Come to me all of you

who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you...” “Cast all of your anxieties upon

the one who cares for you...” “My Peace is My Gift to you.” (Mt 11:28; Pt 5:7; Jn 14:17)

WHILE YOU ARE WAITING

Four-year-old Johnnie kept looking at the window waiting for his Mother to arrive. She had been called away to be with her own mother who was gravely ill. But today his Mother would be coming home. His Aunt Betty kept telling him .... “It won’t be long now. Her plane has landed and she will be home soon.” Aunt Betty knew how much he missed his Mother as his Dad has been killed in Iraq while serving his country.

Aunt Betty looked out the window .... “A cab is coming. Johnnie, your mom is home.”

“I want to go out. I want to go out,” Johnnie screamed.

When he opened the front door, his mother was just getting out of the cab. He ran like a deer and flew into his Mother‘s arms, and for a moment they were frozen in time. The wait was over. Mom was home.

The intense love Johnnie and his Mother experienced is the same love you and I should have as we patiently wait for the birth of Jesus. It’s December and today is the first Sunday of Advent. Jesus will soon be here. That’s what Advent is all about.... waiting for Jesus to arrive. Let your faith and your love keep you focused on the true meaning of Christmas. Prepare well through prayer, join the daily Mass, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or whatever you want to do so that on Christmas morning like Johnnie you can shout “Jesus is here.... Jesus is here.”

While you are waiting patiently for Jesus to come why not talk to His Mother. There is no person on earth who is more respected and loved than a good mother. In fact, on Saturday, you have a wonderful opportunity to talk to Mary and celebrate Her Feast of Immaculate Conception. It should be no surprise to anyone that the Mother of God was conceived without sin and She remained sinless throughout Her life. So, go to Her on Saturday, and ask Her how best you should prepare for the coming of Jesus.

Johnnie had Aunt Betty as he waited for his mother... Go to Mary the Mother of God and she will guide you .... “While You Are Waiting” for the coming of Jesus.

Advent focuses our attention in the coming of

Christ. We live between two comings of Christ - his first coming in humility and weakness at Bethlehem and his second coming in majesty and power at the end of time. Saint Paul says that with each passing year “our salvation is nearer

than when we first believed.” Let us reflect for a moment on how much we need the Lord’s salvation in our lives and in the world. First reading (Jeremiah 33:14-26). The profit assures the people that God will send the

promised one, the Messiah.

Second reading (1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2). Paul prays that the Lord may deepen the love that the Thessalonians have for each other, and thus prepare them for the second coming of Christ.

Gospel (Luke 21:25-28,34-36). In language borrowed from the Old Testament, Luke describes the second coming of Christ. Christians should prepare for it with confidence, vigilance and prayer.

While the Forty Hours Devotion nurtures the love of the faithful for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, three special dimensions have also surrounded this devotion: the protection from evil and temptation; reparation for our own sins and for the poor souls in Purgatory; and deliverance from political, material or spiritual calamities. Here the faithful implore our Lord to pour forth His abundant graces not only for themselves, but their neighbors, not only for their own personal needs, but for those of the world.

The Blessed Sacrament cannot be left unattended when it is exposed. We are counting on our parishioners to devote an hour of adoration.
