No dijeron
III Sunday of Easter –Year of Mark - April 15, 2018
Reflection on Luke 24:35-48
Early morning on Easter Sunday, when the women go to the
tomb and find the stone rolled away they are at first baffled.
When the two men in dazzling clothes appear, they are terri-
fied. But then, prompted by the messengers, they remember
how Jesus had foretold his death and resurrection. They have
travelled the infinite distance from death to life in the space of
an early Sunday morning.
Now the disciples of Jesus had a huge problem. They had seen
him die cruelly on Good Friday. But now they are told by
Mary Magdalene and the other women, that Jesus’ body is
not to be found in the tomb - but were met by angels who told
them ‘why do you seek the living among the dead ?’
People coming back from the dead was not an everyday ex-
perience. So why on earth should they believe these women.
Luke tells us that the message of the women seemed to them
as idle talk, and they did not believe them.
Chapter 24 of Luke's gospel narrates 3 resurrection stories - all
in the time frame of a single day – Easter Sunday. The first
one is the women at the empty tomb. The next relates how 2
travelers meet the Risen Jesus incognito on the road to Em-
maus and invite him into their home. As their guest breaks
bread they recognize him. That’s the point where we begin
our gospel lesson today - the disciples recognizing Jesus at
Emaus.
The 3rd story tells of how Jesus finally appears to the eleven.
But his arrival is met with a more complex response. In a mar-
velous phrase Luke captures their heady confusion – ‘they still
disbelieved for joy, and wondered’. It's as if the morning has
not yet broken.
Initially they had the only rational reaction they could come up
with and thought he was a ghost. They didn't immediately say
‘oh yes, we believe in the resurrection of Jesus and here he is
to prove it', because they were not at that stage, people who
believed that Jesus was raised from the dead.
St Luke lays it on thick by saying that Jesus ate broiled fish in
front of them. People who believe they have seen ghosts make
no such claims.
If you read all the gospels with their different accounts of res-
urrection appearances, the one common factor is that the peo-
ple, who knew Jesus best and knew he'd been crucified,
needed a lot of convincing that he has now risen from the
dead.
It was only after the joy and disbelief had taken hold of them
that Jesus opened their minds to understand the scriptures. He
conducts a Bible study, there and then. It had all been hidden
before. That is what makes the resurrection stories all the more
likely and true.
Then Jesus gives the disciples the mandate to preach repen-
tance for forgiveness of sins, in his name. Those disciples who heard the risen Christ charge them to go out and proclaim,
‘repentance for the forgiveness of sins’, knew that they them-
selves had been the first beneficiaries of the message they
were to proclaim. Their past sins had been wiped away. Now
they had to announce the same possibilities to others.
