COLLECTIONS FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 22 Offertory $19,025| Online $3,594| Total $22,619

Dear friends at St. Elizabeth’s, Over the past month or so, God has gradually revealed to us through the scrip-tures the wonderful gift of His son. First, Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would become the mother of God and bear a son who will be called Jesus. Then Joseph, who was planning on divorcing Mary, was also visited by an angel and was told that the child Mary was carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit. After Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, the angels an-nounced the Good News to the shepherds who were keeping the night watch over their flocks. Last week was the Feast of the Epiphany when the wise kings from the East followed the star that lead them to the newborn King of the Jews. This week, as Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River, we hear God’s voice from the heavens revealing that Jesus is the Messiah, His be-loved Son with whom He is well pleased. Although the Baptism of the Lord closes out the Christmas season, the love story between God and his people continues. Jesus did not need to be baptized because He was without sin. But He chose to be baptized so that He could walk with all of us who have been baptized and are committed to a life of repentance and a turning away from sin. Allowing Himself to be baptized was an act of love and solidarity with humanity. Jesus’s bap-tism in the Jordan reminds us that He is Emmanuel - “God with us.” By becoming one of us, He goes all in. He understands our joys and our sorrows, and He walks with us during the trials and tribulations of life. One of the great joys of my own diaconal ministry is preparing couples for the baptism of their babies and in presiding over the baptismal rite. Last year, Fr. Stephen, Fr. Vincent, Fr. Carlos, and I welcomed 106 new souls into the Catholic Church and the community of faith here at St. Elizabeth’s Church and the beginning of their spiritual journey through the sacrament of baptism. Isn’t that amazing!! Today, on the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, many of those who had their babies baptized in 2019 will return to St. Elizabeth’s for a special blessing at the 10:30 am or 12 noon Mass. Jesus’s baptism marked the beginning of His public ministry. For you and me and the babies at St. Elizabeth’s, Baptism marks the beginning of our lives as Catholic Christians. Each of us, through our baptism, becomes God’s beloved sons and daughters, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. This means that Jesus’s mission be-comes our mission as well. The same Spirit that descended upon Jesus at the Jordan is also with us as we strive to live the Gospel in lives of love and service to God and our neighbor. Many of you, like me, were baptized as infants and have no recollection of our baptism. But just like we cele-brate our birthday’s every year, we should also celebrate our baptism. Although this feast commemorating the Baptism of the Lord closes out the Christmas season, it is not an ending. Rather, it marks a new beginning. It recalls the beginning of Christ’s public ministry, and the start of his journey to the cross and his passion, death and resurrection. It also causes us to pause and reflect on our own spiritual journey and our life in Christ. Our baptism gives us great hope for eternal life and that we too will rise with Christ on the last day. This is cause for great celebration!! Today, as we observe the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, let us celebrate our own baptism and may we hear God’s voice in our hearts saying WE are HIS beloved son’s and daughter’s in whom HE is well pleased.

Peace and blessings for the New Year!

Deacon Andy
