Over Memorial Day I spent a couple of days with Cardi-nal Dolan at his retreat house. We had mass on Monday morning in his private chapel and, instead of a formal homily (since there were just three of us at the mass) we discussed together the readings from the day. Cardinal Dolan commented on the first reading from Acts 19:1-8. It is the story of St. Paul going to Ephesus to one of the new Christian communities. Paul asks these new disciples, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you be-came believers?". They answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." To this, the Car-dinal made a fascinating point: Paul knew that believing in Christ may be enough for our salvation, but God wants much more for us than just salvation. He wants us to live life in abundance and this is what the Spirit brings. Life in abundance.... do you have that? This weekend we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation--the reception of the Holy Spirit--of fifty young men and women from our parish. Their prepara-tion included a day-long retreat put on by our High School Youth Group ("Rooted"). The goal of this retreat was to prepare them to receive the Holy Spirit. Just like St. Paul, we reminded these young people that it's not enough to "believe" the Catholic faith. We need to live it, and the only way we can do that is through receiving the power of the Spirit. God's work in our soul is always a combination of his grace and our "yes". Have all of us said "yes" to the graces that he has given to us? If you aren't yet experi-encing "life in abundance", maybe it's time to ask the Holy Spirit to come into your life in a more powerful way. All you have to do is say, with great faith, "Come, Holy Spirit, kindle in me the fire of your love".

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD

SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT

Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. Dio ha conferito al suo popolo una grande autorità stabilendo che la salvezza fosse concessa agli uomini per mezzo della Chiesa! Ma questa autorità, per essere conforme al senso della Pentecoste, deve sempre essere esercitata con misericordiae con gioia, che sono le caratteristiche di Cristo, che ha sofferto ed è risorto, e che esulta

La semana pasada oímos que después de la Ascensión, los discípulos, María y otros seguidores del Señor se retiraron al piso alto donde perseveraron unánimes en la oración. Esta semana escuchamos que, mientras estaban en oración allí, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos. La promesa de Jesús, luego de su Resurrección que el Evangelio de hoy relata, se cumple: el poder del Espíritu Santo viene sobre los seguidores de Jesús. San Pablo nos dice que a todos nosotros, de alguna manera, se nos dan los dones del Espíritu Santo, dones que se pueden usar para anunciar la Buena Nueva. Hoy es una de las más grandes fiestas de la Iglesia. Llevemos con nosotros el estribillo del salmo responsorial: “¡Envía tu Espíritu, Señor, y repuebla la faz de la tierra!” (Salmo 104:30). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

El día 9 de junio del año 1597, falleció el jesuita José de Anchieta proveniente de las Islas Canarias, España. Este santo “apóstol de Brasil” fue beatificado en 1980 gracias a sus grandes esfuerzos humanitarios, literarios y evangeli-zadores en Brasil. Llegó a Brasil en 1553 donde aprendió Tupí, el idioma de los nativos. Enseñaba a los indígenas, evangelizándolos con la doctrina cristiana y educándolos en historia, filosofía y medicina. Eventualmente fundó el colegio jesuita de São Paulo de Piratininga donde tuvo la audacia de educar, junto a los hijos de los nativos, los hijos de los portugueses. Para este esfuerzo escribió muchos libros y manuales, cosa que le mereció ser el primer escri-tor en Brasil. Además de ser un escritor prolífico, este misionero dedicó su vida a predicar el Evangelio en Brasil, país que cruzó a pie, fundando pueblos y escuelas para los indíge-nas cristianos. Estos le llamaban el “santo volador” por la velocidad con que caminaba. Su celo por el Evangelio lo motivaba a seguir caminando. Como dice el profeta Isaías: “Que hermosos son los pies del que trae buena nuevas” (Isaías 52:7).
