Cottey Partnership: My Power of One This past Wednesday, January 13, Cottey College was the first stop on the national tour of My power of one where owner Sue Vicory announced a partnership with Cottey. From the campus, Vicory headed out on a 12-month

journey around the continental United States to promote her brand and create a film featuring 12 Acts of Kindness.

As a partner, Cottey College will receive $5 from every Empower T-shirt sold through My Power of One.

The money is designated for Cottey’s Serenbetz Institute for Women’s Leadership, Social Responsibility, and Global

Awareness.

The My Power of One project was born out of Vicory’s first film, Homelessness and the Power of One, which

debuted in 2005. That film raised over $200,000 for homeless shelters while winning several awards. From that, Vicory

spent nine months in two urban high schools creating community-based projects with students. She created food and

coat drives at her family business engaging other local businesses to join in.

Vicory’s goal for the tour is to record 12 interviews that will be included in her next film, tentatively titled

Heartbeat. Along with those interviews, she hopes to initiate 12 acts of kindness and have a total of 12 partners in her

endeavor. Cottey College is one of four current partners.

According to the website, My Power of One is a privately held apparel company with the single intent of

recognizing those that make a difference in the lives of others. My Power of One can be looked at as a social statement

that has charitable underpinnings. It is a new business model created to support what is called “circular giving.” Each

item purchased will allow for gifting to a community based organization. At year end, My Power of One will help to

fund organizations within each of these five categories: Children, the Arts, Education, Environment and Animals.

Vicory, a native of Nevada, Missouri, serves on the Serenbetz Institute National Advisory Council, and currently

resides with her husband Jay on a farm outside Mound City, Kansas.

For more information on My Power of One, to order an Empower T-shirt, or to follow Vicory and her husband

Jay on their tour, visit www.mypowerofone.com.

Wellness activity Enrollment

Last week’s health and nutrition tip indicated that nutrition plays the biggest role in your efforts to lose weight. So a first step to try was EaTing SLoWLY, making your meal last for 20-30 minutes? How did it go? Try again this week and see if you can meet the 20 minutes at a greater number of meals!

Here are a few facts about fast food:

1. Fast food items may actually have detrimental effects on the human mind. With such fatty contents and high sugar levels it disrupts the flow of blood to the brain.

2. Thousands of drink dispensers in fast food restaurants have traces of fecal bacteria. In low doses this bacteria won’t kill you, but do you want to consume bacteria?!

3. Many fast food chains overload their sodas with high fructose corn syrup that stretches out your stomach lining and attacks your vital organs.

4. To cut back on costs, many fast food chains use egg substitute, “premium egg blend,” which has glycerin. Glycerin is used in….shaving foam and soap. Yum!

5. Until recently Subway’s bread contained azodicarbonamide, a substance used to create yoga mats. Hungry, anyone?

HERE iS THE CHaLLEngE: Go for two weeks without any fast food and see how much better you feel.
